Manga Pulse 494: Cancelled

Let’s see how many mangas do we have? Let us count them out. Slowly so we don’t lose our place. One manga. Ah, ha, ha, ha! Two, two, mangas? Ah, ha, bah, glargghhh! Drowning in irony jokes. Just one second. Kackkk! OK, I think I hacked it all up. Yes, we have two mangas as usual for your approval. Or not. We’re not your dad. Tim has World Piece, an OEL from Viz. Lucas is a basketball player and, may god forgive me for saying it, a Canadian. There’s a local school building that disappeared and his mother is an archaeologist inspecting the site. No one is really that concerned … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 494: Cancelled"

Popcorn Pulse 198: All Things Now

Oscar season has come and gone and left us with little to talk about. That’s because we don’t care about the awards because we’re not professionals. At least that’s our excuse. Still, one film dared us to talk about it with all the sappy reunion stories leaking like yogurt out of that hooker we paid in two thousand seven. We have Everything Everywhere All at Once[2022]. It’s a film featuring “multiverses” in the same way other science fiction films softer than cottage cheese in the Phoenix sun contain “science”. It’s a framing device exploring nihilism by using magic universe jumping fake-nology. At least there are some fun performances and it’s … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 198: All Things Now"

Manga Pulse 493: Embarrassed Bro

How many language can mangas come in? That depends on how you slice it. If you’re being a bit of a pedant and talking about the source, it’s probably Japanese only. Otherwise you’d call it by the local name like manhwa or manhua. If you’re talking about translations from the source, then however many languages you can translate into. Here we are, solving problems and answering questions. Tim has Rojiura Brothers. We start off with Tetsu who is in love with the mangas about delinquents. Specifically the kind of guys who wear their school uniform loose and get into fights on the street over honor while respecting each other. Popcorn Pulse 197: Quiet Rain

With Weltall’s impending trip to the land of the rising sun which illuminates the tentacle porn, we figured a movie about Japan would be just right. It’s from the eighties if that helps and isn’t a comedy. It’s also not weekend at Bernie’s though that’s been requested over seven hundred times. We figure that’s an outlier from a rabid Terry Kiser fan. If you’re reading this, Gerald, we’ll get to it if and when we choose. We have Black Rain(1989). Directed by Ridley Scott, starring Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. Douglas and Garcia play detectives who arrest a member of the Yakuza and escort him back to Japan. He escapes … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 197: Quiet Rain"

Manga Pulse 492: Inu Bak

We’re just going to cut to the chase and say we have a couple of manga. Normally, we’d hem and haw a bit before getting to the point. Perhaps we’d even hee and haw a bit. Pour moonshine then get a little tipsy before following the point off a cliff. Oh my, there seems to be a Mason jar with a spirituous liquid nearby. Tim has a request in My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog. We start off with a dork waking up in a dogs body. The Mangaka tries to play coy and hide this from us and the main moron doesn’t figure it out until the end of the … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 492: Inu Bak"

Script 2 Script 33: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

We want to break things up with an adaptation from comics with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. We’d both seen the movie in the theaters and found it enjoyable. So when we heard a lot of the fans of the comics were annoyed by the depiction, we added it to our list. Britain needs to assemble a nineteenth century collection of superheroes drawn from public domain fiction. We agree that the comics are better thought out and the characters are a bit deeper. But we can’t help but like the movie for being fun. Script 2 Script 32: Jaws

Do we need to introduce this movie? The grand pappy of the summer tent pole film. The movie that made Spielberg a household name and helped launch a shift in the way movies were made. We bring a discussion of Jaws. If you read the book, you went into the movie wondering where the dicussion of small town politics was. Or maybe you missed the affair between Mrs Brody and Hooper. All of this chaff is separated from the wheat in the movie and makes the film superior. We also start a new tradition in this episode where we have a drink for the occasion. The Modified Sharkbite 1 oz of … Continue reading "Script 2 Script 32: Jaws"

Script 2 Script 31: The Last Unicorn

It’s been a bit since we did a request. What will we choose using our incredible randomization process? The Last Unicorn. The book was written in the late sixties and has a lot of elements of a classic fairy tale. Having somewhat vague magic, ancient kings, curses, and romance. The movie cuts quite a bit, including the rather important harpy tits dangling all about. It was made in the early eighties and it’s usually noted as being animated by Topcraft. A number of members of Topcraft would break out to found Studio Ghibli. Our opinion is that the book tops the movie. While beautifully animated, there’s a lot of critical … Continue reading "Script 2 Script 31: The Last Unicorn"

Popcorn Pulse 196: Supa Burnt

We broke down and inserted another coin to enable two player mode. That’s right, we went and dual reviewed the Double Dungeons Dragon movie. Or maybe we just went and saw The Super Mario Bros Movie[2023]. In spite of all the internet whinging that Chris Prat was voicing Mario which was surely a sign of how the west has fallen and millions must die. What can we really say about it? It’s an Illumination movie that doesn’t induce suicide. Prat does fine as Mario. Ana Taylor-joy does OK as Peach. Seth Rogen is there and should probably not. There’s a lot of references to the game and pop songs. The … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 196: Supa Burnt"

Manga Pulse 491: Mango Climax

Welcome to another episode of Mango Pulse where we consume and rate the world’s favorite fruit. We recently tackled the controversy of Kent mangoes and the low score received by Randy’s Fruit Stand. We stick by our opinion that they’re a little biased because they get ready access to the host’s orchard of Tommy Atkins, a notoriously finicky but rewarding variety. Stepping aside from controversy, today we’ll be diving into the Kesar variety. Excuse me? What do you mean “Manga” not “Mango?” What the hell kind of fruit is a Manga? Well, never mind then. Hey there everyone, have you ever just felt so good? Like really so good? Like that the sun could go nova and wipe all life off the face of the earth and leave only the smolderiest of craters where only politicians and cans of RC cola survive and you just feel great anyway? It may or may not be because we found an errant package of cocaine recovered from a southern state after making a pilgrimage to visit the inspiration of our movie. Yes, we have Cocaine Bear[2023]. Popcorn Pulse 194: Toxic Faith

Captain, I’m getting readings of life from the planet below. Looks like it’s some sort of movie based society. They appear to consume a type of grass seed which has been heated until the moisture inside escapes. This is then given a fine coating of a churned animal fat, derived from their local cattle. It also appears as though this is consumed in ritual fashion while watching movie of any quality. First up, we have Faith Based[2020]. The setup is two layabouts realized Christian movies can make a lot of money. A straight forward premise would be about them scamming a mega-church or maybe a single church. Bubble trouble? Prepare for muggle and make is subtle. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but we’ve already used the Team Rocket speech in an intro as well as quoting the witches from Macbeth. Popcorn Pulse 193: Mash Potatoes

You know what makes a movie work? Like really, really work? Is it well directed acting? A strong sense of shot composition or perhaps lighting? No, you film school snob. What makes a movie good is having a long dead pan voice over which lays out the setup and premise. Lucky for use there’s a great movie in Red Planet[2000].
