Popcorn Pulse 213: Dekotora
Two guys and ten movies. No, it’s not us talking yet more James Bond. Though that will be coming. We’ve got something a little special for everyone. By that we mean we’re doing a movie that wasn’t in either of our wheelhouse and probably hasn’t been covered by a whole host of people before. We have Truck Rascals(1975). The first of what would become a series of ten films, this heralds Japan’s cultural obsession with trucking as well. Oh and those ten films were made within five years. Because once they found a well to tap, it was time to drain it dry. The first one though is a bit … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 213: Dekotora"

Manga Pulse 506: Blame Tim
A whole other week arrives. Along with all the chill and snow of a new year. In spite of this we rouse the dogs and lash them to the sled. All so we can make our long and arduous journey to the manga store. From which we will review two manga. Will they be found fresh or are they molding like those mangosteens no one ate? Tim starts us off with Amai Seikatsu. Shinosuke is a guy who works in the warehouse of a lingerie company. He’s so obsessed with lingerie he can tell what a woman is wearing under her clothes. Popcorn Pulse 212: Ass Sun
Hey there folks. Water your horse and giddy on up. Put on your boots and check the local wanted posters. We’ve got a Western on deck this week because we wanted to mix it up. Not as well as your counter top appliance with a wire beater. Maybe like a hand held mixer with a paddle beater. We have Red Sun(1971). A Charles Bronson movie set in the old west where the Japanese have sent some diplomats including a couple of samurai. Bronson robs the train they’re on. Bronson’s underling steals a sword from the diplomats, kills one of them, and betrays Bronson. Left for dead, Bronson teams up with … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 212: Ass Sun"

And then in the reviews Joseph reincarnates into the body of a recently murdered boy, and Andrew keeps accidentally bumping into the love of his life who believes all things are fated.
Manga Pulse 505: Night Bully
Line up folks. It’s episode five hundred and five. Which is always a bit awkward to type out. We were once told that the and in number was for describing decimal points. Yet it feels natural to write it out like that. Then when we go and check style guides and they say that it’s better to use numerals for larger numbers because writing it out wastes space. Screw you, style guides, we have near infinite space thanks to the digital revolution. Tim has The Bully In-Charge. A manwha where there’s a school full of bullies. Based on the manwha we’ve reviewed, this is something of endemic in Korea. The … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 505: Night Bully"

Popcorn Pulse 211: Aims Long
More Bond for the Bond god. We’ve got a whole crate of Gold Bond medicated powder. Because all these movies are old and old people like talc. Plus it’s got gold right in the name so it’s almost related. We start off with our boy Sean in Goldfinger(1964). This is the movie where all the elements come together. If you’ve never seen a Bond movie, you’re aware of this through sheer cultural osmosis. This is when we have the laser aimed at bisecting a British agent and a heavy set man obsessed with gold. Many gadgets and Q make a full appearance along with one of the least subtle Bond … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 211: Aims Long"

Popcorn Pulse 210: Bames Jond
We’ve gone and done it again. Forgone the usual schedule to stay on the topic of our favorite British secret service agents. No, not Christopher Lee. Though maybe he should enter the equation some time. And he will make an appearance in this little deviation we’re enjoying. Until then, we start with From Russia With Love(1963). Anchoring the whole shebang is our man, Connery. The second Bond movie has found its feet even if they’re a bit unsteady. Some of the elements we’ve come to associate with the double O man crop up. Gadgets in the form of ordinary items that have a defensive use. Blofeld is heard but not … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 210: Bames Jond"

Popcorn Pulse 209: James Bond
We’ve talked about it for quite some time. Teased and hinted at doing something a little unorthodox from the norm. So we’ve broken down and gone and done it. We’ve leaned into the universe of James Bond. Helped by the fact it’s all free on a certain streaming service we don’t advertise for free. We have to start with the first of course. Dr No(1962), while not the first novel, was the first adaptation. Perhaps because JFK was a bit of a fan of the book. Sean Connery’s first outing as Bond has him hanging around tropical islands. They’re hunting for a guy with robot hands and a penchant for … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 209: James Bond"

Script 2 Script 34: Dune
It’s time to get dried out from all the aquatic themed books we’ve done. What better place than Arrakis, Dune, desert planet. The Frank Herbert novel is getting another adaptation soon-ish. It’s a classic space opera where one family attempts to trap another on a hostile world to be exterminated. The mix of Muad’dib and the spice of the planet allows Paul to survive and thrive. Being a scifi novel, there’s a lot of backstory that Lynch wasn’t really able to fit in. How much of it was due to studio meddling versus Lynch clearly wanting to do something else with the material is hard to suss out. The Drink: … Continue reading "Script 2 Script 34: Dune"

Manga Pulse 504: Chou Bachi
Alright. We’ve got two sample bottles of scotch and two mangas. No funny business or running gags. No diversionary little anecdotes that are about as pointless as a marble. Perhaps a little bit of rambling that goes nowhere like a road to an abandoned farm which has antiques you can steal. They’re haunted as a matter of course. Have a priest’s number on hand before you go barn looting. Tim has Choujin X. A physical copy he bought from a bookstore even and remembered to bring to the show! The year is late nineties and there are superhumans that popped up after a global incident. They have all sorts of … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 504: Chou Bachi"

Popcorn Pulse 208: Three Vampires Outside Renfield
It’s October, as we recorded this anyways. And we needed something that fitted within the spirit of the season. That spirit is whiskey and it’s a perennial favorite of ours. That spirit guided us towards our patron saint, senor Nicolas Cage. We’re pretty sure he was knighted in Spain so he can be called senor as a title. That’s right, we have Renfield[2023]. It’s modern day and we join Renfield trying to get along and help the master, Lord Dracula. He’s feeling a bit abused as Dracula beats him around a bit. He also hurts Renfield so ol’ Renny wants out. He then starts hanging around Awkwafina which is out … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 208: Three Vampires Outside Renfield"

Manga Pulse 503: Fire Kaiser
Hello, we’re Manga Pulse and we thank you for choosing us today. We have a lovely set of specials right now. A very seasonal word salad made from only the worst quality slang and confusion. Peppered with silliness brought on by anything mentioned within the news. Braised with whatever alcohol was on sale. This is all paired with a tasty set of reviews on only the freshest of manga, left to sit on the warehouse dock through the weekend. Tim has Fire Force. This takes place in a world where there are fire demons randomly popping out of people and burning everyone around them. In response, there are dedicated fire … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 503: Fire Kaiser"

Popcorn Pulse 207: Terminally Firm
We need some sort of inspiration for a film choice. We’ve drawn from novel adaptations. Foreign films. Ok, let’s see if we can find a movie based on a hentai. We’ll just turn to the old fashioned internet oracle. And that was darn fast. Though this is less hentai and more ecchi. Fuck it, we ball. We’ve got Kite[2014]. India Eisley is a girl who murders people. Samuael Jackson is sort of her handler. He gives her a drug called Amp after she finishes a job. Though it screws with memory. Which makes things difficult as she’s trying to find out who killed her dad. Lucky for her she starts … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 207: Terminally Firm"

Manga Pulse 502: Ash Buster
We don’t always review manga but when we do, we do. And sometimes we do only one. But we’re pretty sure that hasn’t happened a whole lot. Unless it does and then we don’t care. But we also don’t want to be badgered by anyone if we’re wrong. Tim has Beet the Vandel Buster. Beet, named after his father’s favorite crop to grow because this is a fantasy universe originating from The Office. Dwight’s long lost grandson fights Vandel’s which are demons. There’s power levels and spiritual powers. Also there’s a guild and a dollar store knock off of Sauske. It’s not as bad as all that might seem to … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 502: Ash Buster"

And finally in the reviews Joseph can use Amazon Prime in another world, and Andrew attempts to explain the romantic pairings of 9 individuals.
Popcorn Pulse 206: Outlaw Heat
There was a time when the buddy comedy could be found in many theaters. You couldn’t throw a cheap quarter pounder without hitting a movie poster where some cop was teamed up with some other unorthodox character. We used to be a real country, darn it. We take a visit back to those halcyon days where we knew who was the bad guys(it was the French). We have Red Heat(1988). It’s a team up between a Chicago cop and a Soviet Cop. Jim Belushi plays the Chicago man and Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the Soviet. And yes, his unmistakable Austrian accent shines through the Russian he learned for the role. Tim … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 206: Outlaw Heat"

Manga Pulse 501: Pony Cock
Would you look inside this barrel? There’s barely anything in there. It’s like we’re scraping out the bottom. Yeah, it seems we’re getting wood leavings when we run our scraper over it. I suppose we’ll have to order another hogs head of manga straight from the land of the rising sun. Until then, we’ll wash off these two and do a review. We have some manga adaptations of eighties properties. Tim has My Little Pony The Manga. Which is based on the modern show and not the eighties but the show was a reboot so it counts. It’s drawn in the four koma style but has full chapters. Each one … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 501: Pony Cock"

Popcorn Pulse 205: Arthur’s Phallus
Ok, look. You see that sword over there? Yeah, the one stuck in that rock? Go over there and give it a little tug and come right back for your free meat pie. Now, you’ll see some guys put on a whole show. They’ll flail and flop around, maybe grunt or yell while they’re doing it. They crowd laughs but I’m not throwing in anything else just because you get them riled up. Got it, little Arthur? So we have King Arthur[2004]. You probably don’t remember this movie. Bruckheimer’s production company was riding high on the success of some mid Atlantic movie about shipping boats. So they naturally did a … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 205: Arthur’s Phallus"

Finally in the reviews Joseph loses his job despite being integral so he finds a big tittied hometown girl to settle down with, and Andrew has to take his father's place in battling aliens from OUTER SPAAAACE!
Manga Pulse 500
We have something of a big show today. Being as it is the large sized five-hundo we have many things to talk about. Plus Weltall put in a bunch of effort in hunting down clips and bits from our other episodes. Ok, he at least grabbed some stuff he could find off the top of his head. However, that counts as effort in our book. We’re basically the Howard Hughes of manga podcasts. The Hughes that designed good planes and raced steam cars not the one who was afraid of leaving his apartment. Tim has The Eminence in Shadow. Our protag is a japanese high school student. He’s always dreamed … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 500"

Popcorn Pulse 204: Santa’s Covenant
It’s early September and we’re talking about movies. So that means we had to pick something fitting. Naturally this means we grabbed a Christmas movie from last year with Violent Night[2022]. Which stars the sheriff from Stranger Things. Sure he has a name but that’s how he’s stuck in our heads since he first appeared. He plays the Santa who’s going around on his yearly duty. He’s a bit jaded, gets drunk, and passes out in the home of one of those he’s dropping gifts off in. He is awakened by them being attacked by a mercenary team robbing the family. So Saint Nick has to put down thieves who … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 204: Santa’s Covenant"

Manga Pulse 499: Alcoholic Lesbians
Looks like we’re lining up for a long drive. We’ve settled on a driving club. A number five; five or maybe six. A very nice medium range club with an excellent driving force that’s a little dated. Certainly not the choice of some of the top players but very popular among the amateurs hitting the links. Tim hasn’t gotten his on the green so all Weltall has to do is avoid the sand trap and he’ll be within the his strength, the short game. Weltall has My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness. This is one of those autobiographical mangas written by a mangaka who doesn’t seem to have done anything else. … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 499: Alcoholic Lesbians"

Episode 816: Jobless Rent-a-Pastor
High-low! It's Andrew (just me) with a (mostly) solo episode of Anime Pulse. This week we got best original animes, a potential light at the end of the tunnel for one delayed show and some chunky cool new mechas. Then on the gatai segment Joseph goes to Isekai Fantasy school with a lovable Saint while Andrew makes the worst rental of his life (no refunds). P.s I also get pretty drunk by the end but I have edited out the long pauses for an improved experience...
Manga Pulse 498: Inside a Sandwich
We are like cardboard. Not because we are now made with up to thirty percent less material than previously. Because we are two flat sheets sandwiching corrugated paper. Also, we don’t stand up well in the rain. But that’s more because we’re from drier climes where water falling from the sky is of the devil unless it’s frozen. That’s a completely useless way of telling you that we have two manga again. Tim has a revisit of Kekkaishi. This time it’s an omnibus covering the first three volumes. A little recap is there are two families which banish evil spirits. They guard a magical place which happens to be underneath … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 498: Inside a Sandwich"
