On Principle-4-Challenges of Jewish Education with Rabbi Moshe Abramowitz
The incredibly unique period of isolation during the Corona Pandemic calls for a special emphasis in our educational efforts on counselling students in this tense time.Rabbi Kivelevitz's guest,Rabbi Moshe Abramowitz is particularly well suited for the task of advising the community.Rabbi Abramowitz, with close to forty years experience in professional counselling, served as the Director of Pastoral careat Barnabas Health Center and Pallative Care and Hospice for 22 years. He also served as a US Military Chaplain for 23 years, including a four year stint at the West Point Military Academy.Besides these counselling positions,he was at the forefront of educational issues in the Jewish world,as the Executive Director of the Kushner Elementary and High School in Livingston,New Jersey and remains deeply involved in educational issues. The Rabbis discuss how to discover which students need counselling and how those conversations can take place.Rabbi Abramowitz pivots on the parents role, and describes how in many cases a party not as close can bring the most comfort to the person in distress. The teachers task in earmarking which students are ripe for extra mediation is commented on,especially when the child is not physically there for the instructor to pick up on visual cues. They then broaden the scope to many adults who have an ongoing relationship with a therapist, who now have to redefine the terms of engagement-to newly stricken individuals who are finding it particularly difficult to reach out to a stranger when beset by the terror of the pandemic.Rabbi Abramowitz references Rav Shachter's Psak of considering the mental state of shut-ins at home and in institutions in terms of finding inventive Halachic alternatives for them to find help in the form of professional human contact. Rischa Daraiisa-13-Passionate responses to issues in the Jewish Community
Rabbis Yosef Gavriel Bechhofer and Avraham Kivelevitz devote themselves in this episode to positive outgrowths for the Jewish world post the Corona Virus lockdown. They discuss how future weddings will be planned with much less expense and pressure,as well as the realization of how vital the computer and internet is in educating the broadest swath of students.Rabbi Bechhofer comments on the positive aspects of Davening at home even on Shabbas, and Rabbi Kivelevitz invoking the famous epistle of the Vilna Gaon envisions a different type of Shul attendance and experience post Corona. The pair suggest how seemingly non relevant studies can actually provide direct antidotes to the crisis,by planting in one's mind poetic but accurate parallels to the situation we are engulfed in.Rabbi Bechhofer shares elements of a monograph he is writing on Rabbinic responses to the Spanish Flu while Rabbi Kivelevitz interprets a passage from the recent Daf Yomi dealing with starting a fire before Shabbas in a way that provides a road map for achdus specifically through the enforced isolation. Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. One on One with Charlie Harary-Episode 6-Grasping the Monkey Bars
Charlie Harary internationally known investor, strategic adviser and professor and motivational speaker sits down with Rabbi Kivelevitz to discuss the interface of Jewish values in the greater western World. The Rabbi asks Charlie for a Hashkafah approach as the severity of Covid -19 increases dangerously throughout the United States.Charlie argues for tabling any desire to construct a rationale for God's plan and to fall back on Emunah Peshutah.Rabbi Kivelevitz suggests the angst and confusion rampant in these times parallels what world Jewry was struggling with in the years of the Holocaust, and suggests that discerning the redemptive force and Davening for a Messianic culmination might be in order. When mentioning Rav Akiva Eiger's injunction to retain a very positive upbeat sensibility during times of rampant illness, the Rabbi asks Charlie if .carving out substantial time for lighter matters is in order. They still get in a few sports references, like the 1951 Giants Pennant Run,and Tom Brady signing with the Bucs. Please leave us a review or comment at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Rav Duvie Weiss on the Special Kedusha of Rosh Chodesh Nissan
Rabbi Weiss gives over a video conference Shiur in honor of Rosh Chodesh Nissan and exhorts his community to generate within themselves pangs for the Moshiach during the bitter period of Corona seclusion. As a way to accentuate the special significance of Rosh Chodesh Nissan-he dissects a Halachic debate as to whether the directive to add Yaaleh Veyavo in the Rosh Chodesh Tefillos means that neglecting mentioning the passage obviates one's whole Tefillah. He indicates a direct connection between Rabbeinu Yehuda Baal HaTosfos and Rabbeinu Yonah's debate in the sugya in Brachos 26 to the machlokes Imrei Emes and The Koshogklover in Rav Aryeh Fromer's Tshuvos.Rav Duvie concludes the talk with an important Yesod from Rav Tzadok Ha Kohen that highlights the great potential we can mine on this Rosh Chodesh" Lachem".Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Rav Binny's Biurei HaParsha-Episode 3-Vayikra-The true meaning of Sacrifice
Rabbi Binny Freedman is a highly engaging and inspirational educator who has a gift for synthesizing difficult, sophisticated material in a way that inspires both the novice and the scholar. His proficiency in applying classic Jewish concepts to contemporary life in a personal and meaningful way has made him a sought after speaker throughout North America and around the world. This Shiur was given in the Yeshiva Orayta, where Rabbi Freedman serves as Rosh Yeshiva last year. The Rabbi tackles head on what the reason for Korbonos might be.He quotes from the Moreh Nevuchim, and details the Ramban's criticism of the Rambam,He adds to the difficulty in understanding Maimonides based on Rambam's own words in Mishneh Torah which suggest an eternal unmatched significance for Korbonos that seems to have nothing to do with weaning a people off paganism.Using stirring stories from the heroic defenders of Ammunition Hill during the Six Day War,and etymological insight from Rav Bik of Gush Etzion, with a dash of Chassidishe Machshavah-Rav Binny brings the concept of Korbonos down into multiple layers of relevance to the modern listener. We thank the Orayta Yeshivah for the use of this material-Check out more Shiurim and information on their websitehttps://www.orayta.org/Please leave us a review or comment at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. The Deeper End of the Parsha-Episode 3-Vayikra-Rosh Chodesh Nissan
Rabbi Kalman Worch fearlessly attempts to explain to his listeners many of the deepest cryptic passages in our literature.Speaking about the first word in Vayikra, and why the last letter is written in a diminutive way, he treats the class to a number of mystical interpretations stretching from the Zohar through the Megalah Amukos to Rav Menachem Nochum of Tchernobyl and Rav Yitzchak Eisik Yehuda Yechiel Safrin and the Ben Ish Chai. Each of them explore the different levels and methods God reveals knowledge to his creatures. You will be able to comprehend the relationship our tradition has made between Rebbi Akiva and Moshe in a way that highlights each's greatness and dovetails with the significance of the dawning of Chodesh Nissan and how these days reverberate with untapped holiness. We thank the Illinois Center for Jewish Studies for the use of this materialPlease leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Shabbas Bytes by Rabbi Kalman Worch-Amirah LaNachri
Rabbi Worch-Co host of theChavrusaand acclaimed translator of theBnei Yessaschardelivers clearly presented Hilchos Shabbas with very practical directives and applications.Rabbi Worch sets forth the four primary reasons for not allowing a non Jew to perform Malacha for you on Shabbas. He delineates how each reason would only cover specific cases, and how all three are necessary.Along with the opinions alluded to in the Talmud and the Rambam, the Rabbi introduces listeners to the Drasha of the Mechiltawhich indicates that this is in fact a Torah prohibition. In this brief overview one can grasp the fundamental basics that allow this topic to be understood clearly. We thank the Illinois Center for Jewish Studies for the use of this materialPlease leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Rischa Daraiisa-12-Passionate responses to issues in the Jewish Community
Rabbis Bechhofer and Kivelevitz discuss the Heter given by a Rabbi in Maryland for women to use an inflatable tub for going to the Mikvah. They explore the argument for finding Halachic leniencies for women who are fearful of using the public Mikvah due to the current pandemic. They invoke Rabbi Dovid Miller's attempts to bring to early 20th Century America an easier Mikvah option, and discuss whether similar approaches can be adopted for today.Rabbi Bechhofer makes a case for abstinence in Simcha, and reminds us of how American Jews conducted themselves during the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.Praises are handed out for Rabbi Dov Linzer's statements, and Rabbi Bechhofer reads the important address of Rav Gershon Eliezer Schaeffel to his congregants.Rabbi Kivelevitz chides Rabbi Bechhofer to adopt a more compassionate tone towards his antagonists in this angst fraught time, and sees in this period of quarantine the chance for connecting anew sans the old doctrinarian baggage. Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Zera Shimshon-Seeds of Holiness Episode 3-Primordial Suffering and Contemporary Salvation
Rabbi Kalman Worch leads the Shiur through the beautiful passages of this classic work of the Italian scholarRabbi Shimshon Chaim ben Rabbi Nachman Michal Nachmani, who passed away in 1779 .Rav Shimshon explains why the Maggid chooses verses in Devorim to expound when their meaning is so straightforward. His answer leads you through Kabbalistic traditions that see the Jewish people as Uber Souls who have been in the world since the time before the Mabul and been part of the generations of depravity and rebelliousness from the Tower of Bavel through Sodom. This gives the key to understanding why we had to suffer particular ways in Mitzrayim.Rabbi Worch then takes his listeners through the author's take on Vehee Sheamdah- in a way that clarifies what our rescue and redemption is dependent on and what is the key to avoiding our demise at the hands of our enemiesRabbi Shimshon Chaim had only one child, a son, who died at a young age. Rabbi Shimshon Chaim decided to dedicate his 'Sefarim' to the memory of this child who had no continuity of a family. Hence the name "Zera Shimshon" In the introduction to his work,he . That promises that anyone that takes upon himself to learn from his writing, will be granted"children, praise, health, 'Parnasa', wealth, honor".We thank the Illinois Center for Jewish Studies for the use of this materialPlease leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. A recording of the reunion of Rabbis Kivelevitz and Worch done before a large audience of the Illinois Center of Jewish Studies in Skokie Illinois in July 2017.
