Amen.” The church in Thessalonica was also concerned over this same question; what happens after we die? Paul is going to offer further instruction related to the resurrection and how it impacts our lives today. Through our text in the book of John, we dive deeper into the statement, “I believe in Jesus Christ, his Son, our Lord. Our current culture preaches worship of self, “you do you” or “live your truth,” elevating ourselves over everything else. With messages like this pressuring us all over our day to day lives, we often question (intentionally or unintentionally), why should I worship God and no other? How would you define wealth? There are many different ways for us to calculate true financial wealth. To each person, it may look different. Truth is, we covet. We always long for a little bit more than what we have. It’s easy for people to make an idol of money and wealth. This love of money, and the accumulation of wealth, has caused temptation within the human heart since currency began being used - including Christians! The Apostle Paul addresses this issue head-on, calling God’s people to view money differently than the world and gives us multiple charges to avoid the temptation and to seek something far greater, true life! In regard to money & a fulfill Christian life, let’s answer the question; what does it look like to finish well? One of the things I’ve noticed over the last few years with all that has happened in the world is that so many people don’t like authority. Whether it’s in the workplace, the church, politics, or some other place, so many struggle with submitting to God given authority in their lives. Can you relate? In the book, 1 Timothy, we also see it is also the same case for some of the Ephesian believers. In part 8 of our series, Church: Why Bother?, together we learn about the beautiful design God created for YOU and His church. In the book, 1 Timothy, the apostle Paul writes about worship gatherers, qualifications for leaders, dealing with teaching doctrine, and how the church should honor their pastors. If pastors follow the instructions from Paul to Timothy, then they will be leading in a manner that is glorifying to God. If pastors are serving or ruling in a way that is glorying to God, then they are truly a gift to the church. The last few years have been disorienting at times for many as we have watched Christian “celebrities” and pastors announce that they were no longer Christians or become disqualified for ministry due to moral failings and sinful leadership practices. It has left many of us shocked, disheartened, and searching to understand what has led to all of this. Many may have seen them as role models, but now they have fallen off that pedestal. If their faith didn’t make it, how can mine? How do we watch our life and doctrine so it stays strong in every season? With each generation, we grow more and more untrusting of leadership, and honestly, for good reason. How often do we see in the headlines about a CEO, political leader, or a pastor of a large church removed from leadership due to their inappropriate use of power for their own self desires? Too often. Due to the constant bombardment of poor and harmful leaders, many have grown to distrust all church leadership. But God created the church to be lead, so what is the moral standard for those who are put in positions of leadership? In the book of 1 Timothy, Paul is addressing the issue of qualifications for those in leadership. Scripture lays out how not just anybody can be allowed to lead in the church. There are biblical pre-requisites, primarily relating to character and a proven track record of faithfulness. If you were to ask the people around you to describe you, how do you think they would respond? Would they describe you by your career, that you are funny or helpful, or possibly by your hobbies? Many people from different areas of your life may describe you in different ways based on how they know you. But, above all else would you be known for? Earthly traits or by your Christ-likeness? Today’s society continues to grow more and more individualistic. Be unique. Do it yourself. You can do anything! The disposition of individualism is that a person speaks or acts exclusively for himself with no consideration or reference to other people. This mentally has slowly crept its way into church culture as well. That is not the nature and tone we find in God’s Word. The reality is that the forces of our individualistic culture have deeply influenced the way we pray, and even what we pray about. Despite culture today, what does scripture say about what and how should the church pray? In 2021, a polling organization published a report revealed that over the last 6 decades the percentage of American adults who belong to a local church dropped from 70% to 49%. We can often fill our Sundays with errands, sports games, and kid’s activities—putting church and its people on the back burner. But what if we told you God has a beautiful design for the church that very much includes YOU? The book of 1 Timothy speaks to these truths. Christmas traditions are great! But how many of us have found ourselves at some point in a holiday season carrying on “the tradition,” but the reality is very different? Traditions sometimes can cause us to focus on the “joy” of Christmas while ignoring the harder or more painful parts of the season. This only makes the season harder and more challenging. We’re told, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year,” but what do we do when it doesn’t feel like it? Have you ever felt trapped in a situation? You feel like you are so far gone, or the circumstances are irredeemable. While in those moments of desperation or possibly years of trials, how often do we try to just solve all our problems on our own? We try to muster up all our strength, just to feel exhausted and back at the bottom. And possibly, how often do we even acknowledge our need to be saved? It shows a weakness which is not popular in our culture today. However, it is only through salvation that we truly can find freedom! In scripture, Matthew takes great care to help us see how Jesus’ birth fulfilled the promises of God by bringing deliverance to God’s people back then and today. What’s the greatest Christmas gift you’ve ever received? Was it an Xbox, a vacation, or a red rider BB gun like in The Christmas Story? When I think back on the greatest Christmas gifts I’ve received, what made them great was not what they were or how much they cost but who they were connected to or came from. What made them great was the person I received them from rather than the possession itself. Relationship changed everything! We continue our Christmas series, Fulfilled: His Promise Kept. Our Longing Met., where we will discover how Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises to us. As we look at our section of the Christmas story today, we find a similar reality, examining Jesus’s birth when the Wisemen come to find Jesus born in Bethlehem. Everywhere we turn, it seems someone or something is promising to finally give us the satisfaction, happiness, and peace we long for. Yet from advertisements to political campaigns, these promises – and the empty places within us – remain unfilled. Throughout His Word, God makes promises, too – the kind that connect with our deepest needs, longings, and desires. But in today’s day and age we can’t help but wonder, will He actually keep them? We want to pursue the things that will ultimately make us happy. But how often do we try to find happiness in fleeting “things” of this world? While happiness can fade, we find that joy is steadfast! In light of all these conversations, we ask, where does the path towards true joy take us? Navigating our way through life is not always easy. The right decision isn’t always clear. More thanone option can seem like a good choice. But God cares about the direction of our lives, and heoffers guidance through the power of his Holy Spirit. Who are some people in your life who arefacing difficult decisions, believers and unbelievers alike? How could you reach out to offer a wordof encouragement and to pray for them?

The reward for giving and praying and fasting is found in the giving and praying and fasting. Fasting and prayingand giving allow us to experience more of Him. And He is everything. Our reward is the intimacy forged in prayerfulconversation with the One who stitched us and knows us and sits enthroned within us and over us.In The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote: “If there is no element of self-denial in our lives, if we give freerein to the desires of the flesh (taking care of course to keep within the limits of what seems permissible to the world),we shall find it hard to train for the service of Christ. When the flesh is satisfied it is hard to pray with cheerfulness or todevote oneself to a life of service which calls for much self-renunciation.”This week you and I are going to see a need that we can meet — someone we can pray for, someone we can serve,some opportunity to be generous, some opportunity to live out our faith — and we are going to have an opportunity topractice being “in His Majesty’s Secret Service.” Try doing something to meet a need without telling anyone about howyou did it. Now, I’ll never find out if you did it or not, so this is on the honor system. But decide this morning to makeit your goal this week to serve someone without gaining any recognition or praise in return. Then consider the holymoments that are before you in your daily walk with Christ. Would not a season of self-denial help you to focus onwhat God is trying to say?

That’s because one of the primary ways that the curse of sin shows up is in your family relationships—with your parents, your siblings, your spouse, your in-laws, your children, and all the rest of the people you see at a family reunion. The good news is that just like God used the broken families in Genesis to unleash blessings on the whole world, he can do the same in your family. In this seven week series we’re going to see how Jesus can renew, refresh, and restore our broken families.

our family is probably a bit dysfunctional. So are ours. In fact, if you open the first book of the Bible, Genesis, you see all kinds of dysfunctional families. That’s because one of the primary ways that the curse of sin shows up is in your family relationships—with your parents, your siblings, your spouse, your in-laws, your children, and all the rest of the people you see at a family reunion. The good news is that just like God used the broken families in Genesis to unleash blessings on the whole world, he can do the same in your family.
