Climbing the Ladder with Traci Miller
Amazing! I had the chance to speak with Traci Miller this week on my podcast, Women Influencers. She is the Senior VP of Corporate Communications at Miller Construction, where she started in 1993 as the office manager. She also gives motivational talks and serves on the executive committee of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance Board of Directors, the boards of Commercial Industrial Association of South Florida (CIASF), Rebuilding Together Broward County, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, and on the United Way of Broward’s Women United Leadership Council, in addition to several other boards.We discussed how her father and uncle founded Miller Construction, and how she ended up working there out of necessity after going through a divorce with two young children. Emotional Brain Training with Dr. Mellin
Wow! I had the chance to speak with Dr. Laurel Mellin, PhD this week on Women Influencers and we had a great discussion about the neuroscience behind joy. Dr. Mellin is a health psychologist who founded and developed emotional brain training. She is an associate clinical professor of family and community medicine and pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Mellin has authored papers on the science and efficacy of EBT and is a New York Times bestselling author of four books on the method.We discussed how she grew up with both parents and had a normal life until she finished her undergraduate at UC Berkeley in just 3 years, married her childhood sweetheart at 21, and had a baby at 23. Unfortunately, the baby passed away and Dr. Mellin was scarred from surgery as a result and was given the news that she would not be able to have more children. Since her plans on being a mother of 4 children and enjoying married life were interrupted, she went to graduate school in nutrition and after a while decided to invest all her time in trying to cure obesity. 6 months into her new job as a professor at UC San Francisco, she became pregnant. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies & Communications from Florida Atlantic University and Master of Science degree in International Real Estate from Florida International University in 2015. Alongside her robust credentials, she is also a licensed Florida Real Estate Instructor and owns the Florida Real Estate School, Robin Bird Real Estate Institute.We discussed how she grew up with both her parents, shopping around Miami with her mom and having fun enjoying sports with her father. Creating Systems with Ral West
I had the chance to speak with Ral West this week on Women Influencers. She is the founder of Ral West, Livin’ the Dream, a service company dedicated to teaching Entrepreneurs how to create smooth running businesses so they can overcome overwhelm, accomplish more success with less stress, and live the life they deserve.We discussed how she grew up in a family involved in Alaska Tourism, which earned her father the nickname “Mr. Alaska.” After moving to Anchorage, she opened her first business which was a marketing consulting firm specializing in tourism. After setting up shop in an executive suit, she met the boy across the hall that would eventually become her husband. After a while they decided to focus on her husband’s business, Hawaiian Vacations, and began chartering wide body jets to carry Alaskans to Hawaii, as the existing air service was a bit variable. Andrea Simon: Anthropology and Business
I had the pleasure of speaking with Andi Simon this week on Women Influencers. Andi is the founder of Simon Associates Management Consultants LLC (SAMC), which she founded in 2002 to apply anthropology’s methods, tools, and theory to businesses in need of change. We discussed how she was being trained to take over the family retail business when she went off to college at Penn State and discovered Anthropology by chance. After completing her undergraduate work at Columbia, she went right into a doctoral program. She studied how people change, particularly immigrants modifying and adapting their cultures into the cultures of their new countries. Then, while being perfectly content being a professor, she was introduced by her husband Andy to a whole bunch of folks at Citibank who asked her to come on board and help them change.That kick started her career as a consultant, which has been her focus for 22 years and counting. I spoke with Janet Perez Eckles this week on the Women Influencers podcast. She isan author, international speaker, radio host, and founder of JC Empowerment ministries. We spoke about how she overcame losing her sight to Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 30 and became a powerhouse of motivation.We discussed her family’s immigration to the U.S. from Bolivia to get away from the revolutions and adversity when Janet was only 12. During her last year of college she met her first husband and they went on to have 3 children. Unfortunately, when her boys were 3, 5, and 7, Janet’s eyesight began to worsen until she was left totally blind. This week on Women Influencers, I spoke with Denise Berry. She owns and manages Luciano Equity and Co-founded Medical Industries of the Americas after having served a 400 day deployment to Iraq as a U.S. Army Combat Medic.We discussed the challenges she faced in her childhood and early adulthood, having been raised in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California with her brother by their Father who is disabled. Moving into the Unfamiliar: Monica Cataluña Shand, CCIM
This week on Women Influencers, I spoke with Monica Cataluña Shand. She opened her own company, KoRes, in 2007 and serves as Broker and Developer. She is also the President-Elect (‘24-’25) of CCIM in the Fort Lauderdale/Broward district.We discussed how she was born and raised in Puerto Rico and how, around the time Monica was graduating High School, her mom told her that the family was moving to the United States. Tiffany Curry: Staying in the Game
In this week’s episode of Women Influencers, I spoke with Tiffany Curry, the first woman to own a Berkshire Hathaway Franchise in Houston, which is also the first 100% Black owned Berkshire Hathaway in the world. She was named Woman of the Year at the 2017 Global Power Tour.We discussed how she grew up in Houston with her two siblings and their two cousins, under the guidance of her hardworking parents. She shared how her Grandfather was a self-made Entrepreneur who made sure that, although he was there to help if needed, his family worked to earn their own way. This taught Tiffany the value of hard work from a young age, and led her to attend Texas Southern University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), where her mother worked for 30 years.While Tiffany was in her undergraduate studies, she met another student who was pursuing her Real Estate License and Tiffany decided she wanted to do that, too. Advocacy: How Robin Webb Has Helped Women Break the Glass Ceiling
This week, for the first time, I invited a man to join the Women Influencers in Business & CRE Podcast. It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with one of my Mentors, Robin Webb, who has been a staunch advocate for Women in Commercial Real Estate. We discussed how he grew up poor between Georgia and Florida, left home at just 14 years old, and worked his way through High School and College. After finding an opportunity to work in the sales side of the Hotel business, Robin remained in the Hospitality industry for 13 years running 28 hotels across the Southeastern US. Perseverance: The Story of Lezlie Tram Le
Lezlie Tram Le’s family escaped Vietnam by boat then lived in a Malaysian refugee camp for 7 years. She felt like she spent her childhood years in jail, despite having committed no crime. Around the time she turned 13, United Nations forces invaded the camp and forced the refugees out with tear gas and bullets. Despite being shot during this incident, Lezlie feels what was most important is that through this trauma she learned how to keep moving forward no matter what.Lezlie’s family was allowed to immigrate into the U.S. when she was 17. Although she was not fully an adult, yet, she was tasked with being a provider, translator, and caregiver for her family. She quit college to assist her mom with running her salon. This experience launched her into a career as an entrepreneur, and eventually led her to become the Founder and CEO of her own Commercial Real Estate company.
