Ep 171Episode 171 - How can new shooters take high score in class over and over again? It's not magic, it's a process.
I want to share a really cool story on how in the last 5 classes, 3 were won by the newest or the student with the least experience. We have a top gun hat awarded in each class. This goes to the highest scoring shooter. I wanted to reflect on my thoughts on how this is possible, as it has been something I have been thinking heavily about over the last couple weeks. From the trenches. Now and then I want to add a segment for small business owners or for those running them on some tips, tricks and simply a tilt of the hat out of respect and wonder on how any exist at all. It's not easy, so we want to share some encouragement and some food for thoughts from time to time. In this episode, we want to keep encouraging you to stand back up and get back into the fight. We announced that in 2024 we will only be offering 13 classes with 5 students in each. So 65 seats will be available and are looking forward to having you all here in 2024. For those that can't attend our in person class, our online courses in moving forward with over 16 hours of content and growing. Ep 170Episode 170 - Building your custom rifle part II, triggers.
The trigger is not to fire the weapon, it is to keep it from firing until you are ready to shoot. People always have this concept backwards and that is where the danger lies. The importance of a trigger when it comes to your safety and that of others with you should never be underestimated. People think a quality trigger is a smooth clean break. To me that is a good shooting trigger. A good quality trigger will keep that firing pin from falling an any and all conditions included being dropped or slammed hard against an object while falling. It is your last line of defense when an incident happens that could result in the trigger releasing the firing pin in a lesser quality or under scrutinized product. We also are excited to announce our new Armorers Certification Course. Whether for MIl, LEO, Gun Shop or personal use. We want to offer you a great class to learn how to build and maintain a world class weapon using a world class weapon system. Armorers Certification Course. Ep 169Episode 169 - Building your custom rifle part I, the action.
In this episode we discuss the difference between price and cost. When you are looking to build your custom rifle, the action gets a back seat to caliber and stock. But in the grand scheme of things, can cost you the most as far as the quality of your final project and the enjoyment you will get out of it. They look the same, but they are not all equal. The biggest problem to most is they don't know how to evaluate what they are really getting for there hard earned money. We want to share with you our thoughts and why we choose Bat Machine Co. Ep 167Episode 167 - The difference between hosting and running an event. Safety is alway priority #1.
So with a sad heart we left king of the Mountain. We never really explained why, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to talk a little about the added levels of responsibilities and the positions you get put in when having to make decisions when others are depending on you. So if you even plan in running an event, we have some pointers for you and things to careful with when others are involved. More importantly the difference between hosting and running an event. It takes your responsibilities at a whole new level. We are excited that the new range is almost complete and two new events (Practical Tactical Shooters Challenge) are scheduled. Ep 166Episode 166 - Preparing for a match/hunt and the dangers of doing it too close to a match or hunt.
In this episode we go over a great listener Q and A about training for new shooters and the dangers of doing it too close to the start of the match or hunt. So we had a great customer call in getting ready for his first match. He is getting ready and bam, panic sets in that something is wrong. This is not the first call I have received like this and for new shooters there is some sound advice that applies for not just match preparation but for hunting preparation as well. I want to share with you my advice for this subject that I have given many times. For new shooters it will help you get the match and start it with your head in a great place. we also cover our new dates for 2024 for all of our shooting schools. With the new range almost ready, 2024 is going to be a great new chapter for our shooting school. Ep 165Episode 165 - Is a rifle chamber a verb or a noun?
One nagging question is whether or not a rifle chamber is a verb or a noun. Can you change one to the other? The funny part is, the rifle is made up of tangible working components. All of them are a noun except (unitl now) the rifle chamber. The chamber was a service, a job, something you had done. Don't believe me? Walk into a gun store and ask to buy just a rifle chamber and see just what funny looks you get. The ACE system finishes or completes the rifle into a true all-component status. The chamber is now a stand alone working part of the rifle, a tangible usable and reusable part separate of the barrel. We don't thow away an action when the barrel is shot out, nor the stock. That would be crazy. But, we throw away what could be one of the most important parts of the rifle, the chamber. As it was, up until now, was simply a service provided to the barrel. In the future, picking the chamber as a selected part is now a reality. Buying a good one and using it over and over again has finally came to fruition. The only service that a builder or gunsmith provided that you could not complete the rifle without them, was the chamber. That is no longer the case! The future of a true component based rifle system is here, with each and every part a stand alone entity with the ablity to be changed, swapped or re-used at the owner's will or discretion. You no longer need to rely on the service of a third- pary machinist or shop. Welcome the new ACE System Kit Rifles! Coming soon in 2024! Stay tuned! Ep 164EP164 - Making the case both for and against the .308
In this epsidode, Jamie and Richard talk about the .308. Is it still relevant as a modern, capable cartridge. They diiscuss both the pros and cons on why someone would choose, or not choose...making a case for both sides of the arguument. One thing I would like to point out. Jamie and Richard both have decades of experience with the .308 for almost all purposes possible including as a match rifle, hunting rifle and varmint rifle. So, this is not just an opinion of someone's thoughts on the caliber, but real world advice from extensive experience with it in the field. Ep 163EP 163 - Reloading, you can't get there from here!
In reloading, there are many mindsets and techniques, many of which can lead you down a path of heartache, confusion, pain, suffering, sorrow and yes even death. Many reloaders obsess over things they have read or secret formulas they have heard of, thinking that this is the secret they have been waiting for. This new process will most certainly make them the best shooter in the world. Now on to the truth. Many of the things you read, hear and see being peddled by forums or influencers is not just hog wash, but many times just flat out stupid and dangerous and puts not only yourself in harms way, but selfishly putting others in harms way as well. A young man called to ask some questions, over a 30 minute conversation, the conclusion was made "you cannot get there from here". You have gone down the wrong road so far, that getting from A to B, or from dangerous to safe is no longer possible. With all good intentions, the advice was to shoot factory ammo until he could buy all new components and with a reloading manual start from scratch following the instructions step by step. It is my belief that if more new reloaders would follow this simple advice, they would make better, safer and easier to find loads than they ever thought possible. And, in the end, making it a win / win for everyone, including the person shooting next to you whose life is possibly in your hands. Ep 162Episode 162 - "From the Trenches" business segment and the case for the 7PRC.
In the episode we discuss a micro segment that will be up and coming in future shows we call "From the Trenches". A business segment where we talk shop, interview business owners and offer real world advice from being in the trenches as a start up 17 years ago. The challenges, struggles, choices and efforts needed to start, run and grow a small business in the US today. We also announce a new class for new shooters as an introduction to long range shooting. Thanks to a great conversation with one of our Alumni and how they got hooked in the art of long range shooting. We decided we need to really set back and look at a way to introduce to new shooters, not only the art of what we do, but the enjoyment that can be had doing it. Lastly, making the case for the 7PRC. From a call to the podcast. A conversation on not just the PRC, but on calibers, choices and the differance between the power of marketing and a caliber having staying power. How do you choose the best when every year we are sold the "New Best" or "Must Have" caliber? Ep 161Episode 161 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 8. Caliber selection.
In this episode, we dive into our top three choices for caliber selection for new shooters for both hunting and long range competition. We take into consideration that in a lot of cases we are talking to new or newer shooters that are often overwhelmed with information that can be good, bad or even opinions, based on no experience in the subject in which they are offering advice. Usually with no bad intentions, but repeating what they have heard or read from others that is sometimes accepted as the gospel truth. We try to give this advice as if you are our friend, setting across the table and asking us for our honest unbiased opinion. We share not just our selection, but how we made our choices and the criteria we used. We hope this helps you with some alternative choices with caliber selection for getting into this type of shooting. We know you will enjoy every day at the range. Ep 160Episode 160 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 7. Our choice for a factory rifle.
In this episode we continue on our series and share with you our picks if we had to choose a factory rifle. Not only do we share our choices but we also share the guidlines and parameters that helped guide our selections. If you want to get into long range shooting and want or need to start with a factory rifle, this podcast is a great listen on some food for thought while making your selection. Ep 159Episode 159 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 6. Factory or custom.
In part 6 of our series, we dive into factory or custom rifle. Please note we said "or" and for good reason. You can always argue the points of how a custom rifle is better or why you should go custom. But for us, or for us talking with new shooters, it's not a versus argument but an "or" decision on which would be a better fit for you starting out. One could always argue a Tesla is a better car, but for who. For someone new to driving, someone on a budjet or a college kid delivering pizza? Having the best is not always the right choice and certainly not an argument to be had with new shooters or those wanting to give it a try. The cost of getting into long range shooting itself is enough of a deterent when it coomes to the equipment needed besides the rifle. Then, factor in someone demanding it can only be done with the best and we will lose most new shooters. We want the conversation to be factory or custom. We want to talk a little on how we would approach the decision and what questions to ask yourself. We want you to get started in the best way possible for you. Here are some things we took into consideration and what we have learned as we grew in our passion for the art of long range or precision shooting. Ep 158Episode 158 - Interview with Matt Rinella of the Hunt Quietly podcast.
I was introduced to Matt Rinella by a customer and with that, grew into a conversation about hunting and the industry, in general. Matt is a passionate outdoorsman who with the best intentions is trying to bring to light the damage that social media, TV, advertisers, influencers and even investors are doing to our industry. It was a great interview and a subject that is well worth a listen. https://huntquietly.org/ Online Long Range Shooting School. https://www.wolfprecision.net/online-long-range-shooting-school.html Patron Support. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=29426128&fan_landing=true&view_as=public We would also like to thank our sponsors of the show. Ep 157Episode 157 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 4. bits and bobs.
The last part to this series is called "bits and bobs". All the little things you will need besides the rifle and optics to get started in learning and mastering the art of marksmanship or fundamentals. I think in this case, less but better is always a good approach. Don't fall into or become a victim of G.A.S. "gear acquisition syndrome". Here, staying true to our craft and using simple everyday tools or items you would take to a field match or a hunt is gear. Learn the fundamentals, not the gear. Take full advantage of all your gear as you grow, but don't learn to rely on it to make the shot or to be a great marksman. This is the list of things you need, pure and simple. Ep 156Episode 156 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 4. hits for clicks and expectations.
So we interrupt this program to bring you a special announcement...not everything you see or read is true, real or even possible by us mere mortals. We were speaking with Matt Rinella, of the Hunt Quietly Podcast, and could not believe how parallel our two worlds of hunting and shooting align, from advertising, Facebook, YouTube, Influencers and yes even "Jack Asses" like the movie, but only with rifles and shooting. These "Jack Asses" hurt our image as marksman and professionals and put these ridiculous clips up for all to watch and think that their "edited" abilities are the normal that you must live up to. Or they sell you equipment with such lines and professional influencers that the snake oil salesman would be proud. We need to set the bar on what a true marksman is and how they should truly gauge themselves as they grow. We need people to put up content that is true, unbiased, untainted by corporate greed and with professionalism and safety at its core. So all those on the outside watching want to learn more about or be a part of this positive and professional image. We need to stop glorifying and "following" those whose stupid stunts and plain stupidity, by accident or intent, are there only to draw millions of clicks and money in their pockets. These stunts make our sport and industry look like the cast of "Jack Ass" found a new area to produce content in and portray us all in that light. Hits for clicks or stunts for followers with firearms and shooting is bad for our industry, our sport and sets a poor example to our youth and the outside world watching. Hunt Quietly is a good example for our shooting and hunting world to follow if we want this sport and industry to be seen in a positive light. Ep 155Episode 155 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 3. Optics and the 2x rule.
We have talked about this is in the past...our industry selling out to cheaper labor and products overseas and bringing them here to our market for high profits. Don't fall victam to this scam. Ask the questions and do your research. Our fathers and grandfathers have said, you should spend 2 to 3 times the cost of the rifle on your optics. They were right then for the same reason they are right now. This age-old wisdom is not just timeless but more true now than ever. Combine that with the marketing and branding power of today's corperations and you can follow that rule and still wind up with a $500 scope made in China or the Phillippines. The only difference is, you paid $2000.00 for it not realizing that you bought a scope that was made overseas for $250 to $500. Wow! Start asking the questoins and when you are searching for quality, don't be fooled, suckered or shamed by corperate America and it's greed (insert chinese businesses and partners). Ep 154Episode 154 - So you want to get into long range shooting, part 2. Never compromise on quality.
In part II of our series, we were going to discuss rifle stocks. The truth is your approach should be a wholistic. If you want to enjoy yourself at the range and grow as a marksman, simply do not compromise when it comes to quality in any part or piece of your rifle. It matters and it matters a lot. The difference between a great day at the range and a bad day is the gear you make the decision on purchasing. A lot of rifles and manufacturers make compromises on the products they make and sell for many reasons. Price, ease of manufacturing or even in an effort to make more profit. In the end, it all means the same, they compromised for you and got paid to do so. At our Long Range Shooting School, we see it all the time. Three times this year already, two of which where with 5K plus rifles. So just spending more isn't the answer either. Do you homework, ask the questions and follow you instinct. In accuracy it all matters, every single component. Ep 153Episode 153 - So you want to get into long range shooting series, part 1.
In this episode we want to start the conversation by going over all the things we have learned and seen here at the school when people try to get started into learning or wanting to enjoy the art of long range shooting. We want to share with you all the good, bad and ugly that happens with the decisions people make when selecting equipment. So we want to go over all the things you should think about and give you some advice on each so you can make the best educated decision possible. In the end, we want you to enjoy this sport, but too ofter the decisions made while selecting equipment to get started leads down a path of frustration and ultimately leading some to just give up. Ep 152Episode 152 - You can't fix stupid, but it seams to be on sale everywhere.
With just finishing up a class and having years of trying to sort out semi custom and home built rifles on the firing line. I am finally ready to give my opinion as to when you should go custom. I am also here to point out pretty bluntly, that although I find most people to have good intentions, you know the saying on the road to hell being paved with them. Over the years I have been put in harms way many times. Part of it came with the job. But now, it seems that the rifles being home built or sold as pre-fits have come main stream and I need to put a shout out here. I have seen so many situations arise from the unexpected customer of these sellers and builders. Some so dangerouse that it makes me think twice whenever I am out with a group of unknown shooters. Having seen everything from unfinished chambers, unspinning barrels, suppressors explode, suppressors shot off and in several occasions catching problems just in time to prevent a catastrophy. I hope you enjoy this one and I hope it gives you some ideas on what you can get yourself into when it comes to home built or pre-fit customs. It might save you time, money or even your life. Ep 151Episode 151 - The "drop in" chassis and stocks...the good, bad and ugly truth on why bedding is often necessary!
In the custom rifle world, we deal with this issue all the time..."drop in" or "drop fit" stocks and chassis. Too often the marketing powers that be decide to use the term "drop fit," saying that you just bolt it in and your rifle will shoot better and fit without a problem. However, there is a huge difference between fitting, fitting well and fitting perfectly. This can play out with not just accuracy and repeatability issues, but can lead to eventual damage to your rifle. Don't fall victim to this word play. If you want to get the best from your rifle with this type of upgrade, have it fitted or at the very least checked to make sure you have enough of the right contact. If it does not, than you should have it bedded by a professional. We also want to invite a couple of listeners to the show to share their stories of their hunt or match experiences in a series we are calling "preparing for the hunt" and "preparing for the match." Please email us your stories, both the good the bad, to our email address at [email protected] for your chance to be chosen to come on the air and be part of the show. In this podcast, we finish up our series with talking about 4DOF and the good, bad and ugly of it. We also dive into some tips and tricks to help you get your rifle up and running and keep it up and running. Getting true D.O.P.E. for your rifle is by far one of the most important things you can do to become a better marksman. Ep 149Episode 149 - Getting good D.O.P.E. for your rifle part 4, fixing a manual click chart.
I say this often, there are many matches in the past where I have placed or won but was not the best shooter there. What pushed me to the top at several events was knowing and having confidence in my D.O.P.E. at distance. You can do everything right fundamentally, and if you're D.O.P.E. is off, it will mean a miss or at least a less than perfect shot. You cannot runaway or hide from this issue. It exist and you have to iron it out for your individual rifle. This will keep more shots on target and leave you with a little better sense of confidence in yourself and your equipment. Ep 148Episode 148 - Getting good D.O.P.E. for your rifle part 3, the B.C. trap.
In this podcast we go over the B.C. trap that most shooters fall into. When we are calculating our D.O.P.E. for our rifle, we use this number as if it is the gospel truth. The problem, it is more of a guideline than a fact. Your rifle barrel can deform and transform you bullet as it passes through the bore. This changes the B.C. from rifle to rifle like a fingerprint. If you want to learn how to get great D.O.P.E. for your rifle, you need to be aware of this problem and in later episodes how we try to fix it. There are several things we are going to cover while diving into this subject with one being the issue with the curvature of the rifle bore. I said that right, the rifle bore. You're rifling inside your barrel is curved and although most don't talk about it, most don't even know about it. It has several issues with a rifles accuracy while trying to build, but for shooters, it causes issues with trying to figure out how to get good working D.O.P.E. for your rifle. Here is a couple videos to show you just how common this is and how some try to fix it, including bending the barrel to straighten out the inside. Amazing to watch and jaw dropping to think that is so bad that it has to be bent back out after the barrel has been made. Below are a couple YouTube videos posted by others showing the process. Ep 145Episode 145 - Business decisions and strategies we all have to make when making big purchases and growing.
We talk about getting dope and hard copies of it at the end of this podcast. But this is just as much a business podcast as it is a shooting podcast. Many of you have traveled with us through the years as a business and are business owners or persons of responsibilities yourselves. We all have to make the arduous and gut wrenching decisions on money and equipment purchases. I wanted to share with your our thought processes and decision making processes that we have to go through just like everyone else. Maybe by sharing our approach, we can help or give some ideas that you might find useful in the future in your decision making processes. We hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look on making some of the biggest purchasing decisions of our lives. Ep 144Episode 144 - The Fundamentals of marksmanship part 5. Shoot!
Jamie and Richard dive into the last part of this mini series with some final thoughts and advice, one of which is you have to get out and shoot! Knowledge and wisdom are not the same. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. If you want to become a better shooter, you have to grow beyond the studies and research. In the end, you have to commit to getting to the range (with a plan) and spending quality time on the rifle squezing the trigger. This is where you will master the craft and will go from good to great. Ep 143Episode 143 - A new chapter. Having and keeping faith while overcoming obstacles in business.
We just closed on the biggest project we have ever undertaken and this was not on purpose or planned. Things happen in business as in life that at first glance look like bad luck, bad news or an insurmountable obstacle that has just landed in your path. At 52, this still catches me off guard and can shake you to your core. But these things that at first glance appear to be a negative, are often the things you needed to challenge you and force you outside your comfort zone to grow and stretch is ways you never before thought possible. That is what happened to us a week before Christmas 2022. After being given just 4 months to move and close our business from it's current location, to be candid, the drive home felt like the walls closing in. But this time with decades of these obstacles being put in my path and eventually overcome, I kept faith. I put my boots on and went to work trying to find a new location. Weeks went by with not a remotely close candidate for a building that would fill our needs, but still we kept looking and trying. This past Thursday, on February the 23rd, just two short months to the day of this devastating news, we are now owners of our own manufacturing facility along with two new world class machines being delivered shortly. A building so perfect for all we do, that we could not have drawn it out any better from scratch. Not to mention, it is 1 mile from our home and up until January, we didn't even know it existed. I want to share with you our story and to encourage all small businesses out there to keep the faith and keep moving forward. To look at obstacles not as hurdles you cannot get over, but as challenges that are put there to make you grow, stretch and mold you into the owner that must you become to handle the future that is ahead of you. This has played out many times in my life and to this day, I often find myself looking up at the mountain way up high and wondering, is that even possible? Only to find myself weeks, months or years later on the other side. Keep the faith and know that these obstacles would not be put there if you were not ready to face them and know that what may seem impossible at first glance, are put there to take you to the next level. Ep 142Episode 142 - Listener submitted questions and the importance of a barrel cooler.
Thank for the great submitted questions by our listeners. In this podcast, we cover left hand shooters converting from learning to shoot right hand, left eye domonance, shooting with both eyes open and driving the rifle. We also go over the importance of barrel coolers especially if you shoot suppressed. Ep 141Episode 141 - The Fundamentals of marksmanship part 4. Group therapy!
In this podcast, we go over the concept of groups and the importance of how we look at them and use them. If you truly want to know where you are at in your ability to shoot accurately with consistancy, then you have to shoot some groups and, in doing so, you have to take an honest big picture approach. This allows you to have a true baseline on where you are at now, and a way you will measure your progress moving forward. Don't fall victim to skewing the numbers for bragging rights. Know where you are and work to get to where you truly want to be as a marksman. We are giving away a free Wolf Precision Log Book 02/15/2023. Ep 140Episode 140 - The Fundamentals of marksmanship part 3. The importance of keeping a shooters log book.
Continuing on our fundamentals series, we discuss the importance of keeping a shooters log book. Besides your rifle, this it the next most important thing in your kit. Learn to use it correctly and you will grow better and more effeciantly with your rifle. You will also learn all of its quirks, habits and track changes you made over the years. Most shooters don't have one and even less use them properly. Step out and above your competition or just take your shooting abilities and skills to the next level by learning to properly keep and use a log book. Ep 139Episode 139 - The Fundamentals of marksmanship part 2. Also, equipment selection when build the best matters.
In this episode we take on a listener question on "what is drving the rifle?". There are many truths to learning to shoot a rifle well. This concept of drving the rifle has more to it than meets the eye. We also dive into machining and equipment. Why is it that those that are touting to be the best always settle for barely aceptable or less than ideal equipment. If just good enough is ok when it comes to selecting the machines that makes your high dollar rifle, what does that say about the company and how that probably applies to all the other choices they make. Its sort of back handed when you say your the best, say you build the best, but when it comes to the equipment you choose, you don't buy the best. This is what seperates those that talk the talk and those that walk the walk. It is not cheap, easy or even for the faint of heart. If your companies true beliefs are you build the best, shouldn't your equipemnt you choose speak in volume and reflect it. Don't look behnd the curtain too far, as many in the industry say one thing on the sales floor, but won't put your money where there mouth is when it comes to investing in the best equipment for the job. Instead, the money goes into the pocket and your rifle is made on the cheapest equipement they can get by with. Ep 138Episode 138 - Fundamentals of marksmanship part II, seeing is not believing.
In this episode we tackle what I think is the biggest misconception to precision shooting and it is how we are looking at it all wrong. No pun intended, but seeing is not believing. Most people think marksmanship or hitting a target is simply or mostly vision. Line the target up with the reticle and you hit everytime. To be honost that process is the easiest to do and has the smallest effect while trying to go from good to great. Change how you look at marksmanship, becouse most if it does not require your sight. Ep 136Episode 136 - The Fundamentals of marksmanship part 1.
A mission with goals and a plan, it all starts here. If I can share with you what has made the best use of my time in training and somthing that has propelled me and my shooting forward through the years, this is it. To lead off this series we cannot skip the importance of this often overlooked subject. Work a plan or plan to fail. I always say, good luck tends to hang around people that set goals and work a plan. We would also like to share a link for a family in need. Steve Prosch has worked at Bat Machine for years and has come down with cancer and is taking treatment out of state that his insurance will not cover. Ep 135Episode 135 - Preparing for the range and the difference having a purpose will make. Also, happy new year from all of us here at Wolf Precision.
In this episode we talk about preparing for the range to train and having a purpose or goal. This is the first in a series in which we are going to dive into the fundamentals of marksmanship. This episode is from a customer that had stopped by this week who had watched and was a big fan of a video we produced called "All Hogs go to Heaven" part 1. And it reminded me on how making that video changed how we trained and how we have approached training ever since. Having a purpase, reason or goal really makes all the difference. So when you go to the range next time, go with a purpose in mind and train for a goal. We also want to wish all of you a Happy New Year from all of us here at Wolf Precision. EP 134 - Safety part II. Safety, first aid, wilderness survival gear, tips and training we took with Angel Trauma Solutions.
In this podcast, we continue on with more safety talk. This time, on how we approach training and things we should be thinking about when it comes to spending our time in the great outdoors. From match shooting to hunting, what we do can be dangerous and we accept that risk. But what about the little things we don't think about or take into consideration? From first aid kits, communications, strategies and training we should take to prepare ourselves in case the worst happens or a situation turns from an incident to life threatening. These things happen and situations can change in an instant. The gear you take, the training you attended and the safety precations built into your approach to being part of the outdoors can mean the difference between you making it home or on the list of the missing who too often are found deceased. We attended a class at Angel Trauma Solutions and it really awakened the realization that we should be doing more of this type of training and was a good reminder to always train and prepare as if your life or someone you love depends on it. The number one preventable death in America is from blood loss traumas and in some cases you may have less that two minutes to save a life. Thank you, Rick, for a great class and looking forward to having you on for an interview. Ep 133Episode 133 - Hearing and hearing protection, a must listen while you still can.
In this episode we take on a listener submitted question on hearing and hearing protection. What you hear may shock you. From what decibel ratings are, mean and what little protection some products actually provide. Even though you think you are doing the right thing, you probably are still destroying you hearing one shot at a time. Like me, I thought I was protected and was I wrong. Take heed and take notes, this is a really important topic to tackle. We also talk about our new rifle build kits. Would you install you own trigger to save nearly $1000 dollars on your next custom rifle? We think so. Ep 132Episode 132 - Caliber selection and coming up with a rating system on how they compare for hunting, especially for big game.
The top ten Elk Catridges. This video on YouTube has gotten our attention on the pitch and strike when it comes to forcing the belief you must use big hard hitting magnums as acceptable minimum caliber for Elk. There is so much wrong with those statements, mostly due to marketing, writers and the quest to have the biggest baddest caliber on the block. Too many times, new shooters and hunters get exposed to the "experts" and buy all in on the concept that a poor shot with a big magnum will still kill the animal. Not only it this not true, but the followers of this madness will all but ensure a bad shot as most new or young shooters cannot shoot them well. They will not enjoy shooting it, they will not practice as much because of it. And in a lot of cases will not go out and "waste" a lot of ammo training because of the $100 or more per box price. You can accomplish more than you think will small and sometimes really small calibers. You will learn to shoot! You will practice because you will be having fun doing it. And when the time comes "shot placement and bullet selection" will put the trophy on the wall. Don't fall for the "expert" writters opintions so easily. Take it all with a grain of salt. They are the car salesmen of the gun industry. They are beholden to and subservient. Don't believe me? I challenge you to go through your last 20 magazines and find one critical/bad review of any rifle. And don't think for a minute they are all expert marksmen or woodsmen at that too. We are working on a series of YouTube videos to balance the scales and to give you another point of view from people who love to shoot first and take the importance of marksmanship and one's abilities to shoot certain calibers well as a choice that should not be taken lightly. In this episode, we cover a variety of topics including the movers class that we just finished, chassis for hunting, trigger failures and optics. The safety conversation on the potential for extremely dangerous trigger failures are worth the listen alone. One topic that I really think is worth a listen, too, is how to break in a scope and get it ready for repeatable long term use. We hope you enjoy the podcast as Richard joins us for another great episode.
Ep 128Episode 128 - Rifle brass shortage coming along with some thoughts and concepts when dealing and thinking about the wind.
Just when you thought we where out of the woods, here we go again. Just a friendly PSA on the rifle brass shortage that may be coming. If you need or may be in need of brass, we recommend buying what you need now. In this episode, we also talk about and dive into the wind, its concepts and how you should aproach it. Ep 127Episode 127 - Drive the rifle and shoot, new online long range shooting school.
Let's talk about shooting, marksmanship and having confidence to drive the rifle. Knowing you can shoot and hit without technology when it's needed and when it counts the most. We also talk about having lists, pre-flight. Things you should be doing to prepare for the range before you go, things to do at the range and what you do when you get home. Having a list of things you check both before and after can save you a lot of grief when preparing for a hunt, match or range trip. I love pilots for this very reason. They have a checklist for everything, including pre-flight which I think is the most important. Lastly, we are excited to announce our new online long range shooting school course is live along with a new 2 day live fire event for those who attend. Ep 126Episode 126 - Introduction and Interview with Richard Jones along with some shooting, history and upcoming episodes.
We would like to introduce Richard Jones, a great long time friend and now team member here at Wolf Precision. We go way back in shooting together and really had some great experiences shooting and even traveling to matches and events. We talk about his history and background that brought him to America. What got him started in wanting to learn the art of long range shooting and even some future topics. If you came to our schools in 2022 you may have met Richard already. If you call in you may talk with him on the phone. He is a great asset and help to us here and really, you couldn't ask for a more knowledgeable person to teach at the school and talk custom rifles on the phone when wanting to place an order. Ep 125Episode 125 - Bedding, Cerakote and Barreled Actions!
In this episode we talk about bedding, cerakote and barreled actions. We just returned from our trip to Redstone Arsenal, AL and Ft. Benning, GA. Bedding is a topic that came up and barreled action requests are common here at the shop. They both go hand in hand and with a new chassis in the shop being bedded as we speak, this was the right time to answer why we do not offer or sell just barreled actions. We have to see the rifle through to the very end if you are to have the success and accuracy you are expecting from it! Ep 124Episode 124 - Q & A on carbon vs steel and the difference between creativity and Innovation.
In this episode we take a question from Casey on carbon Vs steel barrels. We also dive into a little business on the difference between innovation and creativity. I hope to encourage you to try to put some of your ideas to the test and make or invent that product or widget. Write that song, code or book. Too many times, the best inventions never see the light of day, simply because the creativity part was realized but never acted on to bring it to a realization. It is the greatest feeling in the world and i want to encourage everyone to so that they may experience it too. It will make your heart and soul smile if you do, so do it.
Ep 123Ep123 - Why the ACE is so important to bring rifles to a higher level of accuracy consistently.
When we talk about the future of rifles, not just custom, you get a choice of two out of three options...quick, good (quality) and cheap. But you can only choose two. You want quality and you want it now, it's not going to be cheap. You want quality and cheap, it's not going to be quick. You want cheap and fast, its probably not going to be good good. The major problem isn't that the perfect rifle can't be made by the highest quality gunsmith on his very best day and using the very best techniques. The problem is that the process is slow and not repeatable as scale. Because you are limited by that gunsmiths time and the quality of skill he apples that day. If he speeds up, the quality goes down. It he is tired, the quality suffers. If he can make the perfect rifle on Monday, does he have the physical and mental stamina to maintain that ultra high level of detail to attention for the rest of the week and every rifle he continues to build that week? Or does he tire, lose a little focus or just stop caring as much, maybe in an effort to just finish? The ACE isn't the only way to build the perfect rifle, it is the only way to build the perfect rifle at scale. Achieving the same level of accuracy as the best gunsmith in the world on his very best day in a way that is production sustainable. Our mission in creating the ACE was not in trying to find a way to make the perfect rifle, our mission was trying to find a way to make the perfect rifle every single time without relying on an individuals skill or abilities that day. Which is where the ACE was born and the problem solved. As we move forward in the future, you can have the best, you can have it now and you can have it at a better price, every time with every rifle.
Ep 122Episode 122 - Part 5: The four pillars of marksmanship.
In this episode we discuss the final key to consistency when shooting and that is a mental checklist. The table top that sets on top the other 4 pillars and ties them all together. When put together giving you a sturdy platform to start growing to become a more consistent and accurate shooter.
