Modern Strangers is among that elite camp. With catchy melodies and an infectious energy, they create a sound that feels as if it comes from another era" - Mountain Xpress (09/09/2017) “ There isn’t enough pop music in Asheville, but Modern Strangers are helping to change that” - Ashvegas (Caleb Calhoun 3/22/2018) “You Guys are a gnarly party band!!” (Quinn Powers 06/02/2019) Modern Strangers is an Asheville-based band playing high-energy, toe-tapping, and melodic rock music! A 4-piece combo of journeymen musicians, they take their varied influences and form them into a JanglePop juggernaut with a mountain twist. Hard to pin down their sound, they've heard comparisons from The Beatles to The Pixies to early REM to Elvis Costello to The Kinks. Catchy songs, vocal harmonies and just the right amount of edge make these guys a fun night whether they're playing originals or quirky covers.

The couple met in college while obtaining their Master’s degrees in music. In 2015, the two formed the band, Swamp Rabbit Railroad, playing numerous shows across the Southeast, including the Savannah Folk Music Society, Isis Music Hall in Asheville, WDVX Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, an opening for Gabe Dixon at The Spinning Jenny, and an opening for Davina and the Vagabonds at The Grey Eagle. In 2017, Swamp Rabbit Railroad released a studio album, Down by the Riverside, a unique collection of spiritual folk songs recorded in a historic church in Upstate South Carolina and produced by Nashville artist/producer, Akil Thompson (Little Big Town, Jonny Lang, Kelly Clarkson). The album is currently available on most major listening platforms. Songs of the Folk combines high-level musical training with a natural sense of American roots music, creating a characteristic style that is both sophisticated and authentic, innovative and familiar. Their songs are for and about people in all walks of life, appealing to both the common listener and the connoisseur alike. Songs of the Folk is currently recording selections of their original songs with producer, Mike Horner of Sideways Audio. Debut singles “The Man in the Arcade,” “The Ballad of Maddie Rice,” and “Aloysius Beam” have been released with several more singles coming out throughout 2020. “‘Is there a more aptly named musical act than Songs of the Folk? Their music recalls the beginnings of folk. Not early America, not Celtic troubadours, but the beginnings of music itself, when song was a tool to tell stories. When you hear a Songs of the Folk selection, you will be impressed with the harmonies and the instrumental skill, but what will stick with you are the stories. You kind of get the idea they are building a world, and you’re hearing the first scenes in something larger. They sing about someone in their community and you can’t help but picture the whole town, and the next song seems to exist in that same town. You look forward to the next tune like you do the next chapter of a book. One you don’t want to put down.” -WNC Original Music Podcast

The object of imagination and rumor until 2014’s release, “Bewitchcatchered”, Witchcatcher’s songs sound homemade because they are. Familiar while awkward, his songs are indie rock inspired and hook infused. And if you aren’t careful, you might just find yourself singing a song, if only you can decipher the words. That’s ok, Witchcatcher would be happy if you made up your own.

Surrounded by a musical family, she began singing and performing when she was very young. Hope first got turned onto the idea of writing her own music when she received a guitar at age 17. She attended Carson-Newman University and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in classical voice. It was there that her true flair for songwriting developed. Hope’s drive to perform her original works was launched after winning a songwriters contest in college in 2007. She eventually moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she began introducing her angelic vocals and folky lyrics into the music scene. Hope quickly began to rise as an Asheville favorite. In 2012, her debut single “Hanging In The Balance” made international radio play. She was recognized in regional publications such as the Herald-Journal, The Mountain Xpress, and The Daily Times. She appeared on WNC television, and began touring all over the Southeast USA. In 2014, in an effort to expand her acoustic sound, she teamed up with NJ born cellist and Asheville transplant Jamie Leigh Bennett to create a dynamic guitar/cello blend of original sound. In 2016, 2017 & 2018, she consecutively snagged both best “Singer-Songwriter” and best “Acoustic/Folk Band” titles in Western North Carolina though community votes. Together, their combined fusion of her silky vocals and Jamie Leigh’s deep, rich cello lines has made for a listening experience quite unlike any other. Hope’s “in your face” style of ballad writing, as well as the duo’s reputation for playing fresh versions of songs that span through the decades has made them popular amongst a wide range of age groups. Hope continued to wow audiences and stretch the musical boundaries by switching from soulful ballads to high-energy blues with ease. Her 6 original song EP, entitled “Say What You Will” released on February 6th, 2015 to a sold out show at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall in Asheville, NC. Her third song on the album titled “A Fisherman’s Life” was awarded “best song” in WNC in 2016. Each song on the record offered a diverse style and hook worthy of its subject matter, but all were linked with Hope’s angelic voice, catchy beats, and poignant imagery. The album was one that fans of folk music and singer-songwriters had been waiting for since Hope first began mesmerizing her audiences, and was the perfect exhibition of her extraordinary talent. Riding on the wings of the success of 2015’s album, Hope jumped back in the studio to record a larger project titled “Where the Soil & the Stars Meet”, which released on October 31st, 2016. As a strong follow up to her previous release, Hope’s album—her first LP—was as eclectic and as unpredictable of a musical journey as those who fell in love with her debut might have expected. Song after song, Hope defied convention, leading her audience by the hand through honest reflections of true love, a broken heart left devastated, a chance meeting with strangers, to the celebration of a long life well-lived. Constantly blending genres, the very essence of Hope’s trademark style constantly remains: Her lyrical quality of capturing the simplest of life’s moments and rendering them profound reflections on the emotions that unite us all. A haunting and always evolving collection of ballads, “Where the Soil and Stars Meet” peered into the soul of an artist whose fingers remain firmly on the pulse of the curious odyssey in which we all find ourselves. At the conclusion of 2017 (and just in time for the season), Hope released her latest project “And the Lights Will Shine” – a 6-song collection of holiday tunes. Reflective of her usual folk flair, the EP was well received by all. As expressed by Bill Kopp from the Mountain Xpress: “With ‘And the Lights Will Shine,’ folk/Americana artist Hope Griffin bravely takes on a clutch of holiday classics (adding an original of her own) and creates a fine, distinctive record in the process.” Since then, Hope has far from slowed down. In 2018, she toured nationally in the the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest regions and released her latest single “Carousel”, a hauntingly bea

The Asheville, NC resident currently plays with Schooner, Better Twin, & Emily Easterly in addition to writing and performing under his own name. Carpenter has released two under-the-radar-but-stellar solo albums, Full Flight, in 2011, and Prey Tells, in 2017. Carpenter’s aesthetic lends itself to Big Star’s memorable hooks with the wry, eviscerating wit of Andy Partridge. Catchy, cerebral, and a little pugnacious. "… traces back through songsmiths Tobin Sprout and Matthew Sweet to Robyn Hitchcock and Ray Davies - nostalgia obsessives unafraid to dress their melancholy in pop trappings." -John Schacht, Independent Weekly (NC)

They are affectionately called Chatter and Chitter on their mother’s popular Appalachian blog Blind Pig & the Acorn. The girls enjoyed a musical influence literally from their arrival home from the hospital. Jerry Wilson, their grandfather, who they call Pap, was a musical legend in their neck of the woods. Jerry performed for many years as part of The Wilson Brothers. The duo performed gospel music in the polished high harmonies of the classic brother duet style. They performed at churches, festivals, homecomings, and benefits throughout the south. Over the years they won many awards including the 1998 North Carolina Heritage Award. They were also featured in publications such as “The Old-Time Herald”. The girls often tell the story of laying in their bedroom floor with ears pressed tightly to the floor to hear the sounds of music flowing up from the basement as Pap and his band practiced. Katie says “Mama would make us go to bed but as soon as the lights were out we’d sneak from the covers, lay in the floor, and let the music lull us to sleep.” The Pressley Girls began singing in church with other children and gradually began to sing alone with Pap accompanying them on guitar. At about the same time, Corie and Katie joined the John C. Campbell Folk School Clogging Team. Staying with the JCCFS Cloggers for over seven years, the girls then joined up with the Kudzu Kickers Clogging Team. Becoming proficient in the traditional Appalachian Dance Style seemed to help solidify the girls rhythm for music. The family band evolved into Pap, Paul (Pap’s youngest son and the girls’ uncle), Tipper (Pap’s only daughter and the girls’ mother), Ben and Mark (sons of Pap’s oldest son Steve and cousins of the girls’), and Corie and Katie. In the beginning, the twins could hardly be tied down to sing a song or two with the group before they ran off to play. But as time passed, each girl picked up her own instrument and learned the art of singing harmony from Pap and Paul. These days, The Pressley Girls, Paul, and Tipper are making the music they were raised on and ensuring the tradition of Appalachian music is continued.

As a writer, her songs tend toward the confessional or autobiographical, the type we most often hear accompanied by an acoustic guitar. But O’Shea’s husky, low-toned moan is buoyed instead by her skeletal banjo playing.” -The Greenville Journal Known best for her hauntingly poignant lyricism and masterful vocal play, Kathryn has been featured by Sofar Sounds, WPVM Radio, WNC Original Music Podcast, and more. Last fall, she opened for the internationally renowned Los Angeles-based artist Terra Naomi at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta, then moved home shortly after and placed 2nd overall in the 11th annual Brown Bag Songwriter’s Competition at The Asheville Music Hall. Kathryn is currently recording her debut studio EP with M.G. O'Shea, a talented audio engineer who just so happens to be her big brother. Last summer, the two worked together to produce Kathryn's debut single, “Snow." Immersive Atlanta premiered the track wrote the following: "The moment Kathryn O’Shea’s enormous voice slips into the jaunty bustle of ‘Snow,’ you’ll surely wonder what record label she’s gunning for. With a timbre as dynamic as Florence Welsh, the singer/songwriter strips back the sentimental mush from falling snow to tell a clever tale about getting holed in for the winter; even in just four minutes, she fleshes out a character who wrestles with more than just frozen desire.”

Frizsell has been a musician and songwriter for the majority of his life, in his own solo endeavors and as a leading member of local North Carolina bands. Born in Asheville, NC, Jesse grew up learning and playing his favorite tunes by classic artists, from AC/DC to George Strait. By the age of 16, he was playing in various local bands, contributing as a guitarist, singer, songwriter and arrangement. Frizsell has performed at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam both with his band and more recently as a solo artist. He has also opened for acts such as Bret Michaels (of Poison), Blackberry Smoke, Framing Hanley and shared the stage with Kevin Kinney (of Drivin’ N Cryin’) as well as Justin Biltonen (of 3 Doors Down). More recently, Jesse writes songs for the heartbroken, the working man and those ready and willing to unwind after a long day. Songs like “Beer In The Shower” strike a chord amongst a wide audience, a combination of good hearted humor and desperation, a song to laugh to keep from crying. He participates actively in the local Asheville music scene and regionally in the Southeast. You can find him most weekends playing as a member of The Western Carolina Writers, Solo, playing songs from his latest album or with his bluegrass trio, Jesse Frizsell and the Riffers. Jesse has released a two song EP, “A Couple of Songs for Drinking”,in 2018 and a full length album “Rose Gold Renegades”, in 2019, both available for streaming or download on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify.

In 2018, she toured nationally in the the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest regions and released her latest single “Carousel”

Couple the abilities and in the moment spirit of a jam-band with a punk rock fierceness and energy, and you’ll get a show that will have familiar songs but with a twist that offers a listener something only in that moment. 2018 in particular brought the band many new opportunities traveling to previously untapped regions to connect to new fans, especially after the release of our latest and most eclectic album, Family Dynamo. Last year the band toured up and down the East Coast from Florida to New York, electrifying and magnetizing fans and new folks alike with the live show and new record. Some notable venues along that trip include The Grey Eagle, 1904 Music Hall, Visulite Theatre, Brookfield Place, The Pour House, Barter Theatre, Floyd Fest, and the Purple Fiddle. 2019 has already taken the band to new heights and places. The band wrapped up a month long “Winter Out West Tour” in February with a sold out show in Steamboat Springs (Old Town Pub), and many other highly successful and impactful shows in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Idaho. Building on the success of that winter tour the band took to the van again for the follow up Summer Out West Tour. The summer tour took them to many of the same places as the winter tour, but with new stops in Helena, MT and Jonesboro, AK. Consistent studio recordings, year round touring, earnest songwriting & sharing show bills with such greats as Sonny Landreth, Blind Boys of Alabama, Drivin N Cryin, Ghost Light, Eric Gales, Big Daddy Love and Bettye Lavette has made Andrew Scotchie & the River Rats one of the industry’s fastest growing Rock n Roll bands, and WNC’s best Rock band 5 years running. Rolling Stone’s Garret Woodward gave mention to the band in his coverage of Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam stating that the band is “starting to make a name for themselves on the national scene”. Current Lineup Andrew Scotchie: Guitars/Lead Vocals Keith Harry: Bass/Backup Vocals Eliza Hill: Drums

At a young age she picked up the guitar. Along with that, Xaris also discovered a deep love and connection for Folk and Old Time music. She loved how the old songs had life of their own and had been telling the same stories for generations. Xaris still feels the same way. Relaying these old songs to audiences during her shows makes her feel like she’s doing something bigger than herself. On June eighth, two-thousand-ninteen, at nineteen years old, she released an album of Old Time songs titled “Under The Willow”. Under The Willow was recored in Bristol, Virginia with Bigtone Records. Right out of highschool she started traveling the country solo; just a girl and her guitar. Playing listening rooms, living rooms, and festivals, Xaris has captured the people of small town America’s ears with her melodious, high toned voice. She has been compared to Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, and Joan Baez but has a whole other side of sound all her own. Xaris also writes her own songs. She’s played many songwriters festivals, since the age of twelve and has been featured at the 50th Anniversary Eddie’s Attic Songwriters Shootout in Decatur, Georgia. Now living in Pittsburg, Kansas, Xaris is working on releasing her first full length album of original music in 2020.

He began by making his friends to watch him perform to records of his dad’s band, Four Saints. He progressed by playing the trumpet in various school bands, singing in the choir, and performing in musicals. In his 20’s, Stephen was inspired by his brother, Scot Evans, who was the bassist/vocalist in the regionally successful band, Floating Men, from Nashville, TN. Stephen started his own rock band, Mean Season, in the late 80’s where he began honing his songwriting skills on the guitar. After a few years of local success and radio play in Tallahassee, FL, the band moved to Atlanta, GA to increase their success. Unfortunately, the band broke up, and left Stephen to try his hand at performing solo around Atlanta. Soon the jammed highways of the big city drove him to the beautiful mountain town of Asheville, NC in 1996, where he quickly began soaking in the creative influence of his amazing surroundings. After many years of vacillating between being a professional musician and building a nest in Asheville, Stephen has focused on his love for creating and performing music. In June of 2015, Stephen released his debut LP, “Something to Bleed”, with his band, the True Grits. The record received local and national praise for its passion and creativity. The band members are Brian Shoemaker (bass/electric guitar) Sam Hess (drums) and Woodstock (mandolin). The latest EP release, “Under the Bridge” came out in 2017 to positive reception and local radio play as well. The Krickets are a female Americana group from the gulf coast who's music is what Paste Magazine calls a "a truly stunning, one-of-a-kind sound." With a specialty in swamp harmony, the group's genre-bending songwriting has allowed them to play for diverse audiences from listening rooms to official performances at SXSW. Their title track of their most 2018 album, Redbird, was just named Alt Country Song of the Year at the 2019 Independent Music Awards.

Many familiar tones and tropes can be found here, but they are shaped into an idiosyncratic, emotive language. Through the course of one song, one could hear a folk cadence over driving new wave rhythm or an old school country pedal steel over grungy anthemic gang vocals. These elements, however, never feel disjunctive due to the careful construction and lyrical integrity of each song. The person at the helm of this vision, Jacob Darden, has been writing, recording and leading bands (Israel Darling, Echo Courts) for many years, but Ameriglow has always been the ultimate repository of his most-distilled and heartfelt creative output. Despite its singer-songwriter origins, however, Ameriglow is equally a band that gives an expansively transcendent quality to the songs; from tremors to seismic upheavals. https://ameriglow.band https://open.spotify.com/artist/12z02Ty4eKzdrG6azgni7h NEW SINGLES https://ameriglow.bandcamp.com/track/dismantle https://ameriglow.bandcamp.com/track/whiskey-riot-rifle-2 https://ameriglow.bandcamp.com/track/jellyfish https://ameriglow.bandcamp.com/track/sad-design SOCIAL LINKS https://instagram.com/ameriglow https://twitter.com/ameriglowband https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDVGMI3IN8rU0IjVWtuE35w NOTABLE PRESS http://indiemusic.co/2015/05/27/a-heavy-heaven-for-robby/ http://triad-city-beat.com/portrait-of-an-artist-as-a-guitar-autodidact/ http://yesweekly.com/article-permalink-18569.html VIDEO http://youtu.be/leiHx70Y2WU http://youtu.be/GlraHNzU8uE https://vimeo.com/171153589

From an early age he showed an interest in language and an affinity for writing. At age 16 he got his first guitar but didn’t play his first live show until 15 years later. When asked what took so long, he simply says, “I wasn’t ready.” This theme of taking time to get things right becomes apparent when you hear his music. His thoughtful and often poetic lyrics stick with you long after the song ends. Josh Gray’s sound is a mixture of the folk, blues, country, rock, and bluegrass that first inspired him to pick up a guitar. He’s a storyteller at heart with common themes being love, loss, and social justice. John Dennis, a 28 year old Freeburg, IL native, moved to Nashville, TN in 2010 to pursue his unique place among the music there. Though his songs resonate with the influence of many of folk's greats--namely Dylan, Simon and Springsteen--his unique vocals, clever Midwestern-driven imagery, and 21st century socially commentative lyrics earn him his own distinct voice. In 2013 he was discovered by Dr. Bryan Clark of Rainfeather Records--a successful musician and producer in his own right. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Jason Erie has spent over ten years fronting multiple bands with numerous stints on the road. After five years fronting NY-based rock band Waking Up East, Jason decided to take a break from music altogether. In 2016, after a four-year hiatus, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, newborn son, and his well-worn notebook, brimming with new material ready to be heard. Northern Americana at its core, with explosions of unhinged emotion, Jason Erie’s sound paints a grimly beautiful picture of suburbanite America in decay. Reminiscent of early Springsteen, his music shines a redemptive light on the shadowed characters living in every corner of the country. With songs composed in a marriage of structure and chaos, Jason Erie mashes Americana storytelling with the punk-rock edge he grew up on. What results is his truly unique style.
