More About Elliot Laniado: Elliot started his window treatment career as a man with a van with samples and today has a storefront in downtown Red Bank, NJ, a fleet of three vehicles, employing 12 people. His first approach was asking people to give him a chance, and he wouldn’t accept no for an answer. He always found a way. Today, he is living his dream to “Work with good people, work with nice people, and run an honest business.” A turning point in his business happened in 1997 when Elliot became a Window Treatment Consultant through WCAA. This move helped him step into the world of drapery. Since then, Elliot became the ASID Finance Director for two years, gave classes to ASID designers on “How to avoid drapery nightmares” and, even today, continues to teach the Brookdale design program “The History of Window Treatments.” Elliot is a member of Exciting Windows! Since 2006. Elliot has fulfilled his lifelong dream of being a first responder through his volunteer EMT work. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Nadine. They have three married children and ten grandchildren. Today With Joe Gebara: My guest today, Joe Gebara, owner of J. Edison Interiors Inc., was diagnosed with stage four Lynch Syndrome and given one year to live. Joe and I are on the board of the WCAA and as a member of the board, his cancer journey was pretty public. After turning to the book, The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino Joe was inspired to travel the country and educate people on Og’s philosophies of prioritizing the important things in life. Of Lebanese descent, Joseph was born in Haiti while his family worked there and migrated to Miami, FL when he was 2 years old. Raised in Miami, Joseph would routinely find himself at the family flooring and fabric store. He grew up in the window treatment industry and learned how to manufacture and install blinds, shades and draperies. Joseph studied education and for a brief period taught students with disabilities in Miami-Dade County. The freedom and income opportunities in the window coverings industries drew him from the classroom and he was back measuring, installing and assisting his clients with project management. He was one of the first certified Hunter Douglas installers in Florida. He continues to grow his business, J. Edison Interiors, Inc. along with his son, Noah. When not assisting his clients with their window covering needs Joseph can be found volunteering with his local school district advocating for low income and disabled students. He has served on numerous boards and has traveled the country speaking about the importance of finding balance between work and family. In 2016, Joseph was invited to speak at the White House. Joseph is also a polyglot, fluent in English, Spanish, French and Haitian Creole. He is currently learning Portuguese. Today Georgiana Schwandt joins us to discuss how she chose window treatments as her “retirement career” and all the challenges she has faced in the window treatment business. More About Georgiana Schwandt: As a midwest farmer’s daughter, Georgi grew up in a small farming community in central Illinois, surrounded by family and friends. This upbringing taught her the value of faith, family, education, and a strong work ethic. After graduating from the University of Illinois, she began her educational career. For 28 years, Georgi was a high school educator, with her last role as a high school principal in a large school in Madison, WI. She also worked as an associate professor for ten years, helping teachers to become school administrators. Teaching, learning, and helping others was her primary focus. While working as an educator, Georgi and her husband owned and managed a vacation rental business, Schwandt Properties. This business is still thriving in 2022. After 28 years in high school, she decided it was time for the next chapter. Instead of retiring, Georgi restructured. After considering a couple of other possibilities, she had not found the best option. When having lunch with a friend who made and sold window treatments, her friend suggested, “You should do what I do.” Georgi responded, “I think you’re right.” Incredible Windows was founded in 2006 as a shop-at-home business. Georgi and her small team have helped thousands of home and small business owners in the greater Madison, WI, area find the best window treatments for their homes and offices based on their needs, budget, and style. One of the best parts of the business is the friends and acquaintances Georgi has met during the past 16 years. Developing solid systems and processes, working with the best people and products, helping others, and being willing to continue learning are qualities and attributes that have contributed to the success of Incredible Windows.
