We've made it to SG1 season 10 and it's time to see what the Ori's plans are with Flesh and Blood. Now, in general we don't remember a lot about season 10 so this is going to be a fun "rewatch" for us. Did everyone make it out alive after the explosive season 9 finale? Where are the ori going? What's with Vala's daughter? Seeing the flashbacks of how everyone survived was really great but also not so much because everyone else is dead. One of the coolest things, though, is Sam's rescue by Mitchell and Kvasir as they scoop her up with the Odyssey docking bay. So awesome! We do like this as a season premiere and a sort of reset of the status quo back to how things were with the goa'uld. And now we actually have a singular Bad Guy to focus on now. This week, we do something a little different before we jump into Stargate SG1 season 10. We venture back in time to watch the 2003 Michael Shanks classic, Sumuru. It's 900 years in the future, women rule the world, and men are used for slave labor, procreation, and sacrifices to the giant snake god. This movie is not as bad as it could have been. The general premise is quite interesting but it kind of falls apart in the details. There are some decent moments, but, as Rachael explains, it feels like someone's college thesis project. The CGI is terrible. What's with the giant snake? That's not necessary. The acting is pretty decent, though. For what they had to work with… Given all that, is it worth watching? The Lanteans team up with the wraith in Allies to put Beckett's retrovirus to the test. Of course, things proceed exactly as expected. The beginning of this episode introduces a concept we hadn't though of before: does Atlantis drift around the ocean at all or is it big enough that it's mostly stationary? Can they use the star drive to move it around like a ship? The wraith's plan is truly fascinating. Is it a good idea? Should they be doing this? It does seem like there are parts of this that weren't really thought through. And in the end it was all a ruse because the wraith just wanted to find Earth! Will they get there? It's our FIVE YEAR anniversary, and we've reached the finale of SG1 Season 9 with Camelot. Luckily, they did get renewed for season 10; otherwise, that would have been one hell of a cliffhanger. This is a fun episode with some really great guest stars. Of course, the kids know where the forbidden place is because kids always know where that stuff is. We did enjoy the running gag of the team getting beamed away every time they tried to convince the locals that magic doesn't exist. They really needed to do it one more time, though. Three is the magic comedy number. The final space battle is really impressive. And seeing Sam just floating in space as she watches the destruction is very evocative. We're very glad Inferno did not end on a cliffhanger of who was going to live and who was going to die. While this episode is a complete story, the set-up it gives us for next week is very interesting. Why would you turn off alarms on very advanced technology if you had no idea what they were for? Alarms don't just go off for no reason. Usually… Also, it would have been really interesting if the Daedalus had discovered that there was, in fact, a whole other civilization on the other side of the planet that they couldn't save. Rachael and Kerri don't agree on the motivations behind Lycus continuing to insist that the Atlanteans are only using him and doing all of this to get their hands on his ship. What do you think? We finally find out what happened to Vala as we catch up with her in Crusade. This episode is really well done. Getting to see the other side of the story before the war starts is really interesting. Add in the threat of Russia taking back the Stargate and you have one fully stuffed episode calzone. We really like the relationship between Vala and Tomin and how she does genuinely seem to care for him. It's just really sad when you see how he changes due to the teachings of the Ori. This week's episode of Atlantis, Michael, brings up some interesting questions. Should Atlantis have even done this? Why did they make up a whole fake backstory that he could never remember because it didn't happen? Why did they do this on Atlantis? It is interesting to see our "good guys" doing something that is truly horrifying. But what repercussions should they have experienced because of what they've done? Even if they can transform these beings so they are no longer physically wraith, they are still psychologically wraith. How would that work? We also end with a classic email from Wagner explaining M-theory and lepton radiation as discussed in Arthur's Mantle. In Arthur's Mantle, there's some delightful callbacks and a melding of previous storylines that we really liked. It seems fairly obvious from the start that Sam and Mitchell have been transported somewhere, but the miniaturization idea is really fun! (And now we just want to watch Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.) But as much as we like Dr. Lee being used for comedic relief, it would help us understand why he's still there if he were actually right on occasion. We do find it a little odd that Daniel didn't clock onto Sam and Mitchell being transported somewhere else immediately after seeing the footage, seeing as that happens to them ALL THE TIME. The ending is also a little abrupt and a bit too silly, given the fact that an entire civilization, bar ONE PERSON, had just been slaughtered. Major Lorne and his team are presumed dead this week as Ladon Radim tries to overthrow Cowen in Coup d'Etat. Unfortunately, the team makes some bad decisions this week that they really shouldn't have and Ronon is just pissed off that he's not a wanted man! It's bugs, bugs, bugs as the Gamma Site is invaded in The Scourge. Overall, not one of our favorites. We're not fans of bug-related stories/episodes in general, and there are some plot holes that we have issues with concerning how the bugs move and interact with things. We're also confused about the whole thing where once the bugs eat, they die, but if they don't eat, they keep living. How exactly does that work? Although we are delighted to learn about the existence of the Gamma Site, where dangerous experiments with alien life forms can take place without endangering all life on Earth. It's another possession episode as Elizabeth and John are taken over by the last two survivors of a long-fought war in The Long Goodbye. Rachael was not a fan of this one. It's too similar to other recent episodes we've watched this season. We do both wish we had gotten some sort of backstory to Phebus and Thalen and why they're fighting this war and how they know each other. This episode does have a lot of unanswered questions that could have greatly improved the plot if they were explained. Stargates are being taken from all over the galaxy in an episode that should have been called Dude, Where's My Gate? But first, SG1 have to deal with highly addictive corn in Off the Grid. As many times as we've discussed the fashion of the goa'uld, does the SGC have a seamstress on staff? Where do they get the undercover outfits they wear when the need arises? Is the deal with the Kassa just that it's super tasty? Does it affect people in any other way? It seems like it doesn't. Which is kind of weird. Also, does it really start to rot after only 2 days? We really like how Beau Bridges and Maury Chaykin play against each other. The scenes between Landry and Nerus are some of the best in this episode. The set decorators do an excellent job of redressing the Atlantis set when the team finds one of its sister cities in The Tower. It was really fun seeing the set we're all familiar with dressed up in a different way and with furniture all over the place. The guest stars in this episode were really top notch. Otho and Tavius were both excellent in their roles (though we're really hoping the guy who plays Tavius is much nicer in real life). Rodney's chemistry with Baldric is also fantastic and we loved every scene between those two. Does anyone else want to just bite into a tomato? Is that a thing in real life or just on TV? Daniel and the SGC end up in a bit of a pickle when an old friend calls on them for help in Ethon. This is another episode where we finally revisit a place and bringing the Ori storyline into it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to do that more. It's also a rare episode where the team doesn't get the win. We do have a small diversion into Fun With The English Language as we discuss the meanings of buttload, a jiffy, and bunghole. It does seem a bit surprising no one considered the possibility of the satellite having some kind of shield given the plans they had were the very early stages of the weapon. Surely, something like that should be talked about. And once again, why is Daniel doing the political negotiating? If they knew that was part of the reason they were going to Tagalus, why didn't SG9 go with them? Can Rodney learn to rely on his friends when he gets trapped in a jumper slowly sinking to the bottom of the ocean in Grace Under Pressure? We have our good friend Evelyn back this week to find out. This is really such a great episode and it's hard to imagine anyone other than David doing this. We really learn a lot about Rodney and what kind of person he really is deep down. The version of Sam we get in this episode is really fun to see. Since it's not Sam and we love that Rodney KNOWS she's not real but still basically treats her like she is. How often do you guys talk to yourselves? We have some interesting answers to that question. And it's the return of Live Googling as Rachael decides to look into what things are 6000 feet tall! Mitchell reunites with an old friend and the Jaffa are in upheaval and an old enemy is behind it all this week in Stronghold. What exactly was Mitchell planning when he showed up at the hospital? Was he going to stay there until his friend was either cured or dead? For all our discussions on Goa'uld fashion, this outfit of Ba'al's might be one of our top favorites. But it does beg the question - is he now getting his clothes from Earth? We also really like the angle Ba'al is playing. It's not the usual "I just want galactic domination" motivation. The goa'uld are on Atlantis?! And they've planted a bomb?! Can the city be saved before it reaches Critical Mass? Or as Rachael calls it, Speed 3. There are some issues with the way Caldwell is behaving, given his role in this whole plot. Is it possible he wasn't the intended bad guy from the beginning? We do like the fact that he was probably a goa'uld THE WHOLE TIME! All the stuff with Teyla and Charan is really sweet and Rachael has a very lovely voice. As much as we love a good montage, it's usually to show a long passage of time, but this was only 30 minutes? Did we need a montage? Ripple Effect brings back some dearly departed characters, but there are also shenanigans afoot. And we did not see that twist coming. Once we find out that the whole universe jumping was planned, we're not sure it makes sense. It just seems to ask more questions than it answers. We love this episode. It's a lot of fun, but there were some missed opportunities. Who would you have brought back on an SG1 team just for a little cameo? Why wasn't the cast of Wormhole X-Treme one of the alternate SG1s? We did take a little issue with Landry refusing to allow time to find a solution to get all the stranded teams home. His SGC isn't under any immediate threat like some of the other worlds are. He couldn't give them 24 hours? Finally, buckle up folks, cos Wagner has chimed in on time dilation and the issues with Epiphany. In Epiphany, John is trapped in a time dilation bubble where time is passing much faster for him. Can the team save him before he dies of old age? This episode is not among our favorites. The script seems a little clunky in parts and the characters are not making the best choices. And Rodney wastes so much time telling people he doesn't have time to explain what's happening because that would waste time. What's with Teer's visions of John? This whole storyline just opens up way more questions that we're not sure we want answered. Don't get us started on the ending. All those people had to do was just stare up at the beast and that banished it? That's too much for us even by "Because TV!" standards. Colonel Mitchell becomes Collateral Damage when he's arrested for murder! And he's confessed! This episode sparks some thought-provoking conversations about memory and whether this process is something you would want to undergo. Rachael makes a really interesting point that a person knowing the memories are implanted but still believing they are their own knowledge is a weird disconnect. There's also the point of having the knowledge of how to do something versus actually doing it can be very different things. It is a little odd that an archaeologist and an alien Jaffa are the ones put in charge of looking over legal files. Even if they are alien documents, where's the lawyer? Major Davis? Someone? Also, how exactly does the memory device work? They seem to contradict themselves as they explain it when first analyzing Mitchell's memories to figure out if his memory of Reya's murder is false or not. As much as we really like this episode, at the end of it we're still left asking ourselves, "But how??" Will John and his team escape from the wraith? Will Rodney be able to get help in time? Find out as we discuss The Hive. Ford continues to be a petulant teenager, and we love it. Also, everyone does a really great job acting through the withdrawal of the wraith enzyme. The first time watching this episode, Kerri totally did not see the twist with Neera being a spy for the wraith coming. Rachael did. So, for once, Rachael is smarter than Kerri! Getting the wraith to start fighting themselves is truly interesting, and we can't wait to see how that will help Atlantis fight them in the future. Luckily, we didn't have to wait three months this time. Why are the Sodan not surprised to see Mitchell, considering they all think he's dead? Why is no one talking about that? And why do they only have one plan for getting blood from the Prior? It seems silly that all the world leaders from the International Committee show up in person at the SGC, which is Ground Zero for the current global pandemic. Why was Orlin not coming in to tell people the truth about the Ori not a part of the plan from the beginning? SG1 seems to be back to their old tricks of trying to convince people they've just met that they're the ones who know the truth. Although, Teal'c does finally make some good points to Gerak where he starts asking questions to try and get Gerak to really think about what the Priors/Ori have told him. Can non-corporeal beings travel between galaxies without ships? Have the Ancients and Ori really been completely isolated from each other all this time? John's team is kidnapped by an old friend this week in The Lost Boys. And coming soon to Netflix near you, The Found Boys starring Christopher Walken and Helena Bonham Carter, because, somehow, there is no movie or TV show called The Found Boys. So, we make one up. We kind of get why, but it's funny to think of Aiden just being a fully petulant teenager in this episode. The interesting thing is, though, no one denies that the enzyme can increase a person's physical abilities, but the big problem that no one is addressing is the effect this has on everyone's mental health. How did Ford's men hack the DHD so it would only dial the planet they wanted to go to? They couldn't fix the dart or do much of anything else, but they knew how to do that? And, once John has everyone scooped up in the dart beam, he has the upper hand. He doesn't have to go through with the mission. No one can do anything about it. Earth is under threat from the Prior Plague in The Fourth Horseman, Part 1. In addition, the storyline with Gerak pushing so hard for the Jaffa to officially follow Origin is quite interesting. As is pointed out several times, you can't legislate religious belief. It will be interesting to see how this fully plays out (cos we don't remember exactly). Rachael also has an interesting take on Orlin's appearance in this episode. Would the creepy parts of this have been less creepy if Orlin was played by a girl? SG1 finds a strange man in a stasis chamber this week in Prototype. And what do they do with this strange man? Bring him back to the SGC, of course! Daniel being the one to suggest not keeping Khalek alive is very interesting. Because if he's saying that, it should be a clue as to how dangerous Khalek truly is. But why does Khalek know who Daniel is? He shouldn't, since Anubis used his DNA (and therefore the genetic memory) from before he ascended. What exactly are the rules of ascension? Every time it gets brought up, they seem to change. Is it a spiritual thing or just a byproduct of evolution?
