We've made it to SG1 season 10 and it's time to see what the Ori's plans are with Flesh and Blood. Now, in general we don't remember a lot about season 10 so this is going to be a fun "rewatch" for us. Did everyone make it out alive after the explosive season 9 finale? Where are the ori going? What's with Vala's daughter? Seeing the flashbacks of how everyone survived was really great but also not so much because everyone else is dead. One of the coolest things, though, is Sam's rescue by Mitchell and Kvasir as they scoop her up with the Odyssey docking bay. So awesome! We do like this as a season premiere and a sort of reset of the status quo back to how things were with the goa'uld. And now we actually have a singular Bad Guy to focus on now. This week, we do something a little different before we jump into Stargate SG1 season 10. We venture back in time to watch the 2003 Michael Shanks classic, Sumuru. It's 900 years in the future, women rule the world, and men are used for slave labor, procreation, and sacrifices to the giant snake god. This movie is not as bad as it could have been. The general premise is quite interesting but it kind of falls apart in the details. There are some decent moments, but, as Rachael explains, it feels like someone's college thesis project. The CGI is terrible. What's with the giant snake? That's not necessary. The acting is pretty decent, though. For what they had to work with… Given all that, is it worth watching? The Lanteans team up with the wraith in Allies to put Beckett's retrovirus to the test. Of course, things proceed exactly as expected. The beginning of this episode introduces a concept we hadn't though of before: does Atlantis drift around the ocean at all or is it big enough that it's mostly stationary? Can they use the star drive to move it around like a ship? The wraith's plan is truly fascinating. Is it a good idea? Should they be doing this? It does seem like there are parts of this that weren't really thought through. And in the end it was all a ruse because the wraith just wanted to find Earth! Will they get there? It's our FIVE YEAR anniversary, and we've reached the finale of SG1 Season 9 with Camelot. Luckily, they did get renewed for season 10; otherwise, that would have been one hell of a cliffhanger. This is a fun episode with some really great guest stars. Of course, the kids know where the forbidden place is because kids always know where that stuff is. We did enjoy the running gag of the team getting beamed away every time they tried to convince the locals that magic doesn't exist. They really needed to do it one more time, though. Three is the magic comedy number. The final space battle is really impressive. And seeing Sam just floating in space as she watches the destruction is very evocative. We're very glad Inferno did not end on a cliffhanger of who was going to live and who was going to die. While this episode is a complete story, the set-up it gives us for next week is very interesting. Why would you turn off alarms on very advanced technology if you had no idea what they were for? Alarms don't just go off for no reason. Usually… Also, it would have been really interesting if the Daedalus had discovered that there was, in fact, a whole other civilization on the other side of the planet that they couldn't save. Rachael and Kerri don't agree on the motivations behind Lycus continuing to insist that the Atlanteans are only using him and doing all of this to get their hands on his ship. What do you think? We finally find out what happened to Vala as we catch up with her in Crusade. This episode is really well done. Getting to see the other side of the story before the war starts is really interesting. Add in the threat of Russia taking back the Stargate and you have one fully stuffed episode calzone. We really like the relationship between Vala and Tomin and how she does genuinely seem to care for him. It's just really sad when you see how he changes due to the teachings of the Ori. This week's episode of Atlantis, Michael, brings up some interesting questions. Should Atlantis have even done this? Why did they make up a whole fake backstory that he could never remember because it didn't happen? Why did they do this on Atlantis? It is interesting to see our "good guys" doing something that is truly horrifying. But what repercussions should they have experienced because of what they've done? Even if they can transform these beings so they are no longer physically wraith, they are still psychologically wraith. How would that work? We also end with a classic email from Wagner explaining M-theory and lepton radiation as discussed in Arthur's Mantle. In Arthur's Mantle, there's some delightful callbacks and a melding of previous storylines that we really liked. It seems fairly obvious from the start that Sam and Mitchell have been transported somewhere, but the miniaturization idea is really fun! (And now we just want to watch Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.) But as much as we like Dr. Lee being used for comedic relief, it would help us understand why he's still there if he were actually right on occasion. We do find it a little odd that Daniel didn't clock onto Sam and Mitchell being transported somewhere else immediately after seeing the footage, seeing as that happens to them ALL THE TIME. The ending is also a little abrupt and a bit too silly, given the fact that an entire civilization, bar ONE PERSON, had just been slaughtered. Major Lorne and his team are presumed dead this week as Ladon Radim tries to overthrow Cowen in Coup d'Etat. Unfortunately, the team makes some bad decisions this week that they really shouldn't have and Ronon is just pissed off that he's not a wanted man! It's bugs, bugs, bugs as the Gamma Site is invaded in The Scourge. Overall, not one of our favorites. We're not fans of bug-related stories/episodes in general, and there are some plot holes that we have issues with concerning how the bugs move and interact with things. We're also confused about the whole thing where once the bugs eat, they die, but if they don't eat, they keep living. How exactly does that work? Although we are delighted to learn about the existence of the Gamma Site, where dangerous experiments with alien life forms can take place without endangering all life on Earth. It's another possession episode as Elizabeth and John are taken over by the last two survivors of a long-fought war in The Long Goodbye. Rachael was not a fan of this one. It's too similar to other recent episodes we've watched this season. We do both wish we had gotten some sort of backstory to Phebus and Thalen and why they're fighting this war and how they know each other. This episode does have a lot of unanswered questions that could have greatly improved the plot if they were explained. Stargates are being taken from all over the galaxy in an episode that should have been called Dude, Where's My Gate? But first, SG1 have to deal with highly addictive corn in Off the Grid. As many times as we've discussed the fashion of the goa'uld, does the SGC have a seamstress on staff? Where do they get the undercover outfits they wear when the need arises? Is the deal with the Kassa just that it's super tasty? Does it affect people in any other way? It seems like it doesn't. Which is kind of weird. Also, does it really start to rot after only 2 days? We really like how Beau Bridges and Maury Chaykin play against each other. The scenes between Landry and Nerus are some of the best in this episode.
