Episode 70 - Primitive reflexes: The missing piece in child development with Paediatric Physiotherapist Jenn Evans

There’s a piece of the child development puzzle that almost no one is talking about, but it could be the key to understanding your child’s movement, attention, and even behaviour. They're called primitive reflexes – automatic, early-life movements that should integrate as a child grows.  But when they don’t? They can quietly affect everything from coordination to emotional regulation to how well your child focuses at school. In this episode, I’m joined by Paediatric Physiotherapist Jenn Evans, who is passionate about helping parents and caregivers understand these often-missed reflexes and their big role in brain development. We talk about what primitive reflexes are, why they’re so important, how modern life is impacting their integration, and what you can do if your child (or even you) still has them. If your child struggles with attention, sensory challenges, or coordination – or if you’ve just got that gut feeling that something developmental might be off – have a listen.  Jenn shares her journey into this work, how she assesses and supports children with retained reflexes, and the real transformations she’s seen. We also get into advice for parents and adults who suspect these reflexes might be affecting their lives.   Jenn and I chat about:  What primitive reflexes are and why they matter How modern lifestyles may be contributing to retained reflexes The impact of retained reflexes on conditions like ADHD, dyslexia, and sensory processing challenges Why our kids might be stuck in fight or flight  A simple fix for bed wetting  How to support our children with their learning and sports skills  How to identify if your child might still have retained reflexes Why it is important to integrate primitive reflexes    Jenn Evans is a registered physiotherapist with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, specializing in paediatrics and neurodevelopmental conditions. She holds a Master’s in Physiotherapy (with distinction) from Leeds Beckett University in the UK and is the founder of TheraBounce, a trampoline-based therapy program for individuals with disabilities.  With over five years of experience in a multidisciplinary paediatric clinic, Jenn has completed advanced training in areas like Dynamic Movement Intervention, developmental orthopaedics, and primitive reflex integration. Her energetic, hands-on approach is tailored to each child, and she offers paediatric physiotherapy at the Well Body Group in Bobcaygeon.   Episode Links: Connect with Jenn on Instagram Check out The Well Body Group and TheraBounce  Learn more about primitive reflexes from Harkla Come say hi to me on Instagram Books to Thrive in Motherhood: Dive into The Motherhood Reset, Nourished Mama, and Mama Let It Go to overcome burnout and become a healthy, energized mom.   Picky Eating Guide: Learn about common but lesser-known reasons kids are picky eaters and practical strategies to help children enjoy healthy foods. Episode 59 - What’s failing modern moms with Dr Maggie Wyss

In this episode, I talk with Dr Maggie Wyss, a researcher and global health expert who has spent years studying how women make decisions in pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. We talk about why modern motherhood often feels overwhelming, the crucial (but little-known) transition of matrescence, and why asking for help should be seen as strength – not weakness. Dr Maggie also shares what we can learn from our ancestors about raising children and how reconnecting with our intuition can help us make better decisions as mothers. Dr Maggie and I talk about:  The importance of context in decision making  Why modern day motherhood is so much harder than it has to be  The messy, transitional time of matrescence that no one is talking about  How motherhood changes us forever  Why the countercultural practice of creating community and accepting help is essential for mothers’ and their children’s wellbeing  Asking for support is an act of rebellion, not a sign of weakness  Why we must get reattuned with our intuition and why this is essential for making better decisions  What we can learn from our ancestors about mothering    Dr Maggie Wyss is a researcher, writer, and global health expert whose work centers on the social and systemic forces that shape motherhood. From East Africa to Switzerland, she has studied how mothers make decisions in the face of uncertainty, pressure, and power imbalances – research that has informed her work with organizations like UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank. Today, she writes about motherhood as a public issue, not just a personal journey – arguing that it deserves recognition, investment, and collective responsibility. Episode 45 - Have an optimal pregnancy and easeful birth with Osteopath Tessa Lang-Larson

I started getting osteopathy treatments in the early years of motherhood and it helped me so much. My body was rather misaligned and in pain after two pregnancies, carrying babies for hours every day and not taking proper care of myself. Osteopathy was one of the modalities that helped me so much on my journey back to prioritizing myself and having my health and energy back. I only wish I had known of osteopathy and its benefits before I had my children. I had no idea that it could have helped with having a more easeful birth and supported my baby and myself with the many common newborn challenges. How good is that? In the most recent episode of The Wild and Well Podcast, I chat with Osteopath Tessa Lang-Larson about how we can use osteopathy to our benefit during pregnancy, postpartum and beyond. Tessa and I chat about: What osteopathy is How osteopathy can support fertility The benefits of osteopathy for pregnancy and birth The importance of proper alignment for birth Doable strategies to support a more easeful birth Why early intervention is optimal but that it is never too late to make positive changes How we can help our children with their anxiety, emotional regulation, and postural development Tessa is a Manual Osteopathic Practitioner. She is a member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association. She graduated from the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy in 2021 and obtained her specialization in Infant Osteopathy in 2023. Tessa is a mom of three. She is also one of the founders of The Well Body Group in the Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. This centre offers a holistic approach to health and offers osteopathy, massage, pediatric physiotherapy, counselling and several other health modalities. Tessa’s interest in supporting women and their babies to have optimal health during pregnancy and postpartum began after birthing her first two children. Using osteopathy, Tessa helps moms with pregnancy-related issues such as aches and pains and proper pelvic alignment for an optimal birth. She also helps with many common issues for infants, including lactation and latching, tongue ties, colic and other digestive concerns, and sleep challenges. Episode 41 - Healing foods to eat postpartum

We prepare and think about birth a lot. Or at least I did.  But postpartum? Not so much.  It wasn’t until after I had both my children that I even heard of a postpartum doula. A birth doula sure, but postpartum – no.  Postpartum was a shocking reality slap. It was beautiful. It was messy. And it was the first time in my life that I craved more support on such a deep level.  Imagine how different our world would be if new mothers had extra support and delicious nourishing meals during those first few days, weeks and months after birth?  I know that my own matrescence journey would have been a little gentler with a little less nutrient depletion. How about yours?  Postpartum care and nourishment are so important. So, I asked Alicia Allison, a postpartum chef, postpartum doula and herbalist, to join me on the podcast to talk about how mothers can get more nourishment postpartum.  Alicia and I chat about:  Bringing celebration to postpartum food  How to build new postpartum traditions  Why a culture of care is what mothers need  Foods to eat when pregnant Healing foods postpartum  Why preconception is a great time to work on holistic health  The importance of agency in creating our postpartum experience  Herbs to support mothers postpartum  Not only is Alicia a postpartum chef, postpartum doula, and herbalist, but she is also a yoga teacher, lactation counsellor, somatic wellness practitioner. She is a pioneer and leader in postpartum nutrition. Over more than a decade of working as a postpartum chef and doula, Alicia has supported over 80 families during the fourth trimester. She created NOURISH, a program that educates and mentors home chefs and postpartum doulas to provide care to more families during those postpartum weeks and months.
