Episode 84: Kellie Syfan – Supporting Behavioral Changes
Kellie is a board certified behavior analyst. She is the founder of her own business, Applied Behavioral Happiness. At Applied Behavioral Happiness, Kellie and her team work with families to overcome challenging behavior through skill building programs and play. What I love about Kellie is that she approaches this with what will work with your kids, your family, your belief systems, your values. It’s not a one size fits all plan for how to handle behavior issues with your child. Some things that we talked about in this episode were how to change behavior without forcing change in your child, when tried and true advice doesn’t work, our triggers, your child’s triggers. I walked away with some tangible skills that I am going to walk away for my own family! Episode 83: Angela Douglas – Showing kids the way by doing
Angela Douglas is the Executive Director for Healthy New Albany which is an organization that promotes wellness in Ohio. They have toddler in nature programs, nourish cooking lessons, a food pantry, and five races throughout the year that help fund their programming. They also have a virtual kids marathon where you do 26 miles over an 8 week period. She started the food pantry in her garage when she was pregnant and had a 1.5 year old. It is really cool to hear how all of that evolved. She also served in the army for 4 years and in this episode she shares how that shaped how she views life everyday and feels a pull to make an impact in what she does. In this episode, we get to hear about finding ways to give our kids perspective, kids in sports and athletics and the importance of moving our bodies. Dr. Laurie Kramer is a licensed clinical psychologist and a professor of applied psychology at Northeastern University. She is the creator of More Fun with Sisters and Brothers program which is a program that teaches 4-8 year old children the key social and emotional competencies that research has shown are critical for fun, friendly, and low conflict sibling interaction. Episode 81: Bob Kennedy – An Olympian’s Mindset Parenting High-Achieving Athletes
Bob Kennedy is an American Distance Runner, who is now retired. He once held the American record in the 3,000 meters, 2 mile and the 5,000 meters. Bob ran for Indiana University and went on to run professionally for Nike, competing in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. Bob has a 5k PR of 12:58 and Nike has named two shoes after him. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Bob, when he was on the Board of Directors for Back on My Feet Indianapolis and then at Athletic Annex, a local run specialty store in Indianapolis. Bob is also the father of two kids. He has twins. His daughter is very involved with running and his son is a soccer player. One of the things that we focus on in this episode is how Bob approaches parenting his kids through the lens of someone who was a very successful athlete himself and what kinds of involvement he has in their athletic careers. Jenn Kautsch feels passionate about making safe spaces for women to have conversations about alcohol without judgment, labels or rules. She is a retired “grey area” drinker and in her mid-40s, she felt tired, stuck, and on autopilot and needed a change. She just turned 50 and is a new empty nester. She started a community called Sober Sis where she has helped over 20,000 women from all over the world. SoberSis is a like-minded community of women who are renegotiating their relationship with alcohol w/o labels, shame, judgment or rules. She has a 21 day reset challenge that she started because she wanted to share what she has learned and experienced firsthand. I have already learned so much from their Instagram page around the topic of video games and I feel a lot of relief because video games have been a bit of a struggle in our household and I know that I have not always reacted the way that I should. In this episode, Ash breaks down how to set up a structure and a routine so that your kids can have a healthy relationship with gaming. A lot of times, the problem isn’t the video game itself, it is the expectations around when it is time to play the video game and things like that.
