Shiny Object Syndrome: The Productivity Thief We All Battle (And How to Win)

Look, you know how it feels...like an itch under your skin. You're working on a project, making good progress, and then BAM! Someone swears by a new tool, or that side hustle concept your friend is gushing about suddenly appears to be far superior to what you're doing. The next thing you know, your perfectly set plans are accumulating dust as you spin your wheels with whatever dazzling object piques your interest. We have all been there. It's called shiny object syndrome (SOS), and it's more than just an annoyance; it's a stealthy saboteur of goals, desires, and, let's be honest, our mental health also. The allure of the new, the promise of the next big thing—it's powerful stuff! But, the reality is, SOS isn't about the item; it's about what we want that new thing to fix. Why Do Those Shiny Objects Have Us Hooked?Shiny Object Syndrome Fallout is More Than Just a DistractionHere's what nobody tells you about shiny object syndrome: it's not just about wasted time. Chasing every bright light wreaks havoc on more than your to-do list and here are four areas that get negatively impacted. How do You Fight Shiny Temptations, without Going Full-On Hermit? Let’s explore six anti-shiny object action plan items to help you consistently make progress on your goals, so you can have your ideal business and ideal life. Progress rarely moves in a straight line. Some days, you'll crush it; others, you'll stumble. But every small win over a distraction, every time you choose your long-term goals over a fleeting temptation, that's where the true growth happens. Be patient with yourself, and keep striving to master your focus, so you can enjoy having your ideal business and ideal life. How Olympians Set and Achieve Goals

Grace's alarm blared at 4:30 AM. Ugh. Most people were still sound asleep, when she dragged herself out of bed, pulled on her training gear, and headed out into the predawn chill. After two hours of grueling sprints in the rain later, she trudged home, exhausted and oddly exhilarated. As she ate breakfast, her mind wandered to the poster above her desk: the Olympic rings, a symbol she'd stared at almost every day for the past six years. Was it worth it? The missed parties, the aching muscles, the endless sacrifices? Of course, she told herself. To stand on that Olympic podium? Nothing in the world would compare. We may not all dream of Olympic gold, but there's something we can learn from athletes like Grace. The single-minded focus, the ability to break down daunting goals, and the resilience to bounce back from setbacks aren't superpowers reserved only for elite competitors. Whether you dream of running your first marathon, landing that big deal, or finally mastering a new language, how Olympians approach goals can help us tackle the challenges in our lives. Why Olympic-Level Goal Setting MattersSure, reaching the Olympics is a monumental feat for some. If that's not your ambition, the goal setting process is still transformative. You'll build discipline, discover hidden strengths, and perhaps even surprise yourself with your capabilities. So, what's your Everest? It's time to start climbing! The 9 Ten-Minute Daily Habits That Will Change Your Life

Ever feel like you don't have enough time to work on yourself to make those positive changes you crave? Well, what if I told you that it doesn't take hours? Did you know that studies show just 10 minutes of focused, intentional action daily can create significant shifts over time? Think about it – that's less time than you probably spend scrolling through social media! See, the secret to big changes isn't in crazy life overhauls. It's about those small, super-consistent habits that work their magic slowly but surely, like how a little seed turns into a giant, beautiful tree. Think of these 10-minute habits as planting those super-important life seeds. Let's dive into nine awesome and easy habits you can do each day for positive changes in your life. Don't let the search for grand transformations distract you from the power of tiny steps. We often get obsessed with the big picture of the end goal and feel paralyzed by the distance. Massive changes don't happen overnight. They result from those almost invisible daily improvements, the little actions strung together consistently over time. This concept applies to everything—health, relationships, careers. Imagine losing weight not with a drastic diet but with small, sustainable eating changes and 10 minutes of daily exercise. Or fixing a troubled relationship not with a single big gesture but with tiny acts of kindness and communication daily. That's the magic of these micro-habits—they're achievable, they're sneaky, and they add up in ways you wouldn't expect. How to Break the Cycle: 6 Stages for Changed Behavior and Achieved Goals

One of the most difficult challenges of sticking to your goals personally and professionally is changing your behavior. Goals like improving your health, reaching a milestone, or revising daily routines aren’t easy. In fact, studies show that our brains don’t like change, are wired for laziness, and have a limited capacity. Ouch! And we often fail because we don’t practice the correct steps. As with any process, there’s an order to follow. For example, when administering first aid, it’s vital to work sequentially. Before caring for an injured or ill person, you should obviously call for help. Then you check for breathing and a pulse to determine if CPR is needed. Next, if a wound is present, you must attempt to protect yourself from bloodborne pathogens before trying to stop the bleeding. Or let’s say you’re painting a room in your house. Obviously, you need to choose your paint color (will it be Arizona Dust? Blissful Blue? Soft Candlelight? Gallery Gray?) and purchase the proper amount. You should then prepare the area. You’ll likely move furniture, tape off the trim, and cover the floor with a drop cloth. After all, you wouldn’t want to open that fresh can of paint on an unprotected carpet! Putting in the time for preparation saves you a big headache (and extensive clean-up) later on. Likewise, there are steps to changing behavior in order to successfully reach your goals. Let’s take a closer look at what’s required. I’m the author of many books, including, Excuses Don’t Count; Results Rule, Live Life with No Regrets, No Excuses, The Guide to Stopping Procrastination, The Power of Visualization, My Gratitude Journal, the Work Life Balance Emergency Kit, and The Roadmap To Success with Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard, and more. How to Make Great Business Decisions by Thinking Fast and Slow

As a business owner, you’re constantly on the move. There are a million things that constantly need your attention and you’re making decisions left and right. Moving fast is just a way of life.Making quick decisions, however, is not necessarily the same as making good decisions. When you dive into cognitive psychology and economics, you’ll discover that there is an actual science behind the act of decision-making. The ideas of fast and slow thinking as two different modes of thought, were first described in Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking, Fast and Slow.According to Daniel, we have a two-system way of thinking: Thinking Fast (System 1) and Thinking Slow (System 2). Keep listening for more on how to recognize these systems within yourself, and how harnessing the power of each one can help improve the quality of the decisions that you make.Thinking Fast (System 1)An easy way to think of System 1 is that it is your gut reaction to experiences in your life. It is arguably the stronger of the two systems, and we tend to default to thinking fast, or reacting quickly, before moving on to a slower processing of events.Thinking Slow (System 2)System 2 is the slower, more thoughtful sibling to System 1.While System 1 is the younger sibling who screams “Let’s go!” and jumps off a roof into the pool because it seems fun, System 2 is the more responsible older sibling who takes time to assess the risks of jumping off of the roof and decides it’s probably better not to do it. Apply Fast and Slow Thinking to Your Business I’m the author of many books, including, Excuses Don’t Count; Results Rule, Live Life with No Regrets, No Excuses, The Guide to Stopping Procrastination, The Power of Visualization, My Gratitude Journal, the Work Life Balance Emergency Kit, and The Roadmap To Success with Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard, and more. 8 Common Behaviors of All Successful Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs are extremely driven and have a knack for getting what they want. Though they’re often under immense pressure and juggle multiple responsibilities, the best entrepreneurs seem to handle everything with grace while still coming out on top. So, what types of behaviors allow them to get ahead and win that we can implement? Let’s explore eight habits that successful entrepreneurs swear by. Whether you’re just beginning your entrepreneurial journey or find yourself questioning your next move, you can find inspiration and direction from these eight habits. Nearly half (42.6%) of entrepreneurs fear failure, despite evidence that business owners need to be comfortable with failure and learn from the experience. This fear of not succeeding is what’s detrimental to businesses, not the failure itself. The fear of failure is obviously bad for your business, so you need to quickly learn to overcome it. How an entrepreneur deals with failure impacts how their direct reports bounce back from them also.Want more proven business success tips and resources? Decode the "Mega Successful" Success Mindset That Sets Them Apart

We've all wondered: What makes those seemingly unstoppable entrepreneurs, innovators, and industry leaders tick? Is it luck, some inborn brilliance, or ruthless ambition? The truth is, while individual personalities vary, the "mega successful" often share specific thinking habits that fuel their extraordinary achievements. Let's break them down into five habits. Key Takeaway: You Can Train Your Brain for SuccessThink about it: You go to the gym to build muscle, right? Your mindset is the same. It takes work, but you absolutely can strengthen the habits that drive your success. Don't get discouraged if you don't feel like a "natural" visionary or fearless risk-taker right now. Start small! · Just One Thing Pick one of these five habits that feels the most challenging for you. Don't overwhelm yourself working to change everything at once. · Baby Steps Are PowerfulLet's say it's fear of failure. Your first step might be simply reframing a small setback as "data," instead of letting it derail you for days. · Track Your Wins Keep a "Success Journal." Even small mindset shifts deserve celebration. Seeing your progress reinforces the power of these changes. This isn't some overnight magic trick. However, with consistent, intentional practice, you'd be surprised how quickly your perspective, decisions, and ultimately, your results start to shift. You're training your brain for the big leagues!Go to https://www.accountabilitycoach.com to check out for yourself how I, as your Accountability Coach™, can help you get and stay focused on you highest payoff activities that put you in the highest probability position to achieve your professional and personal goals, so you can enjoy the kind of business and life you truly want and deserve. 8 Ideas for Getting Things Done…The Right Way

We all want more success and the fear of failure can often be the driving force of our actions. We work long hours, sacrifice personal time, and even sleep. We put our heart and soul into what we're trying to achieve, only to find that we're spinning our wheels. We think we're getting things done, because at the end of the day all of our Action List items are crossed out; but did we really get closer to achieving our goals? The fact is, most of us accomplish a whole list of things by the end of the day, but have little to show for it. Your success depends on what you are doing and the way you are getting things done. If you're not moving closer to your goal achievement, you are not getting things done the right way. The good news is - getting things done the right way requires only a simple shift in your actions. There are only two ways of getting things done; one way leads to your success, while the other keeps you in the same position you're in right now. There is no in between. Getting things done right comes down to taking actions that support your forward progress and success. If you feel like you've been spinning your wheels, you probably have been. You might be getting things done, but your actions have been sabotaging your success. You end up working twice as hard, only to stay in the same place. Getting things done the right way, can take you from spinning your wheels to; creating more time, expending less effort, reducing frustration, and moving you closer to your goals with every single action. This is possible because success relies on one principle: success takes successful actions. Let’s explore eight ideas to help you get things done… the right way. 20 Smart Answers for SMART Goal Setting

We have all heard about SMART goal setting. In days gone by, business leaders adopted a set of principles to sustain business growth and achieve goals. These principles were known as SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based. While many corporate giants now believe these principles to be somewhat archaic and not relevant in today’s dynamic, less structured business world, SMART goals can be expanded and revised to suitably fit our current business philosophies. Let’s break this down and delve into each one now. S is for “Specific”Creating specific goals is no less relevant today than it was 20 or more years ago.But let’s ramp it up by adding Stimulating, Systematic, Synergy, and Self-talk to the list of “S” words. M is for “Measurement”In the SMART goal principle, M is for “measureable”, but it can also stand for motivation, memorable, and meaningful.A is for “Achievable” Sure, setting achievable goals is a key factor in ensuring the success of your goal strategy, but what about Action Plan, Articulate, and Acknowledge? R is for “Relevant”Sure, keeping your goals relevant is a high priority, but so is Re-invention and Resolve. T is for “Time-Based” Goals consist of two basic components – the end result and the time it will take you to achieve that end result. So, creating time-based goals is a crucial factor. But so are words like Tactical and Thought-provoking.Go to https://www.accountabilitycoach.com to check out for yourself how I, as your Accountability Coach™, can help you get and stay focused on you highest payoff activities that put you in the highest probability position to achieve your professional and personal goals, so you can enjoy the kind of business and life you truly want and deserve. 4 Forms of Accountability You Need in Your Life to Accelerate Your Goal Achievement

Accountability is more than just a friend that calls you up occasionally to make sure you’re sticking to your weight loss goals. It’s also more than the occasional roundtable discussion with business colleagues checking in on how everyone in the group is doing in terms of hitting their quarterly financial goals. True, meaningful accountability serves to prop you up when you feel discouraged, and also propels you to heights you never thought possible. While there are many different types of accountability, both business and personal, these 4 types of accountability are ones you need to place in your life immediately.Ultimately, accountability is never just a one-time thing that applies to just a single area of our life. To find success, you need to be open to being challenged in all areas of your life. We can’t usually see our own blind spots – it takes trusted people in our lives to point them out to us and to provide us the support we need to work through those weak points intentionally.Want more proven business success tips and resources? To Procrastinate or Not to Procrastinate: The Entrepreneur’s Dilemma

There comes a time when you don’t feel like working anymore. It happens to everyone, you are certainly not an exception. Rather, it would be surprising if you haven’t felt that way about a task or project till now. As an entrepreneur, you would have worked hard to get your business to a level where it is successful and stable. Yet, procrastination can tempt you at any time. Particularly if it is a task you don’t like doing, there is a bigger chance you would be enticed towards procrastination. The general perception among businesspeople is that procrastination is bad. They expect their employees to be productive throughout, not wasting even a single minute while they are at work. However, there is a limit to how much work a person can do at once without getting bored or tired. If they have reached the tipping point, continuing to work beyond that time would actually lead to a drop in quality of performance and prove to be counterproductive. The million-dollar question is whether procrastination is always bad. So, how do you avoid falling in the trap? Let’s talk about 5 practical tips which will help you pass up procrastination, or at least procrastinate on less important activities. Don't let procrastination hold you back any longer. The Psychological Price That Entrepreneurs Pay for Success

It can be challenging to imagine that entrepreneurship comes with a psychological price considering how much the media glamorizes it. Most people only see the lavish and exciting lifestyles of high-profile entrepreneurs. That is why it is important to pay attention to the psychological price that entrepreneurs pay and work to avoid it.But this makes up a small percentage of the overall business owner population. Most entrepreneurs don't own private jets, and they don't party with well-known celebrities or live extravagantly. However, this doesn't mean that their life is all set out for them either. Just like other leaders, they also pay the psychological price of achieving their dreams and maintaining their success.Bradley Smith is the prime example of unequivocal business success behind which hid the fear of failure, stress-ridden anxiety, and the constant feeling of not being enough. Smith is the CEO of Rescue One Financial, a California-based financial service company that, on average, makes $32 million/year in sales. In 2008, Bradley Smith was working day and night, counseling nervous clients on getting out of debt. But while he gave them advice, Smith was drowning in debt himself.Smith had a steep beginning; working with a debt settlement company, maxing out his credit card, selling his very first and most expensive watch, and doing business with family by asking his dad for a $10,000 loan. Smith and his wife were living off of scraps, making the best of what they had, and sharing only a bottle of wine for dinner. He would wake up in the middle of the night with his mind racing, wondering, 'how can I ever turn this thing off?' Want more proven business success tips and resources? 4 Ways to Preserve Your Company Culture as You Scale Your Business

Your business is scaling, which is fantastic! It means that your business is successful and growing, as is your team. And it’s more important now than ever to preserve your company’s culture, or what made it so great in the first place. A symptom of rapid expansion can be feeling like the spirit of the company is not the same as it once was. With more people joining your team, they can have an impact on the overall culture of the company. More individual personalities means more voices, and the core set of values that you once established may be lost among the noise. Scaling your business doesn’t mean you need to choose between success and a strong company culture—in fact, if your culture is well-defined, many of your new hires will echo those values and uphold them as they help you grow your business. Let’s explore four ways to preserve your company culture as your team continues to grow and you scale your business. How much of your company culture you preserve as you scale depends on how much you care about it. Preserve your company culture as you scale by being an example of your company values, hiring to fit company culture, and adapting as the company grows while maintaining the core of who your business is. 4 Steps to Building Persistent Behavior and Get Even Better Results

Persistence is sort of like a ‘magic word’ when it comes to success. Persistence is basically the repetition or continuation of behavior, and it is an absolutely essential part of business. As a successful business owner, you no doubt have at least a pretty good idea of what it takes to be persistent, though it never hurts to revisit a subject that is very important. The whole idea of persistence revolves around the fact that motivation has a tendency to wax and wane a bit as time goes by. Persistence is a behavior that can be learned, and it is also a behavior which will render this troublesome waxing and waning of your motivation harmless in the long run, which is why it is so instrumental to expanding your current level of success. However, since persistence is an attribute of longevity, it can take some strength of mind and some psychological fortitude to really believe in it enough to make a commitment to practice it day after day. Now, we are going to discuss 4 steps to building persistent behavior. Following these steps will help you with the process of more consistently being a persistent person so you can experience even better results. Every day, remind yourself that persistence is an absolute necessity. Without it, any business will flounder and possibly even fail. If you find yourself lacking persistence, then keep taking each of these four steps, one at a time. Taking a proactive approach to solving this problem is by far the best way to deal with it, and these steps forward are a perfect way to get started! Use Time Blocks to Manage Your Schedule and Increase Your Success

Using calendar time blocks is one of the best ways to effectively manage your time. It's a skill that is often overlooked but is an essential key to a productive day (day after day). We'll explore different ways you can make this critical practice easier in your life and take some of the stress out of your schedule by breaking up tasks into manageable chunks. One of the benefits of using time blocks is that it gives you more control over your day. You can use it to prioritize what's important and get the most critical tasks done right away, or you can set up time blocks for things like checking email, social media, or other less pressing activities that take up a lot of time. It can also help you manage tasks when you have limited time to work on them. Remember - time blocks aren't set in stone! You'll notice that I've given you many different options for creating your time block schedule. That's because there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to managing your time effectively. How to Stay Motivated During a Time Block It can be hard to stay focused and motivated when you know you only have a limited amount of time to do something. One trick is to set your target for the time block and break your goals down into smaller steps. This way, you'll feel like you're constantly moving forward, rather than just staring at a long to-do list or a pile of work. How to Make the Most of Your Time Blocks When you plan your day, think about how long tasks will take you. Then, block off enough time to do them correctly. Avoid multitasking and using time blocks for more than one task at a time, as it can be stressful and cost you extra time in the long run. It can be tempting to say that a particular time block will work for all tasks, but it doesn't. Experiment with different lengths of time blocks and see how they affect you getting the work done. A longer time block might give you the chance to take a break from your work now and then, while a shorter one may help you stay even more focused. When deciding how to split your day, give yourself a small test run of each time block. If you need more time than scheduled, increase your blocks to the desired length in the future. Similarly, if you feel that tasks are taking less time than expected, reduce your time blocks. Your schedule should be flexible enUnlock a blueprint to creating and having your ideal business and ideal life by scheduling your free consultation with me today!
