Ep 14What's In Your Bag? Ep. 14 - Saroya Tinker

Saroya Tinker is a defender for the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation, but her journey to becoming one of the few black players in professional hockey is one of perseverance, determination, and mental toughness. We sat down with Saroya to discuss her introduction to the game of hockey from a child growing up in Canada, getting called the N word by a teammate at the age of 12, and becoming the first black player ever in the history of the Yale Men's or Women's Ice Hockey program. We discuss her journey dealing with an eating disorder that caused her to struggle with being body positive, and how that led her to painting as a healthy outlet to express her feelings on a canvas. Her perspective on mental health in this conversation was truly inspiring, and would be a lift to anyone struggling with body positivity, anxiety, or any other form of mental struggles that can arise throughout life. We also touch on her role in the film Black Ice, working alongside Nike and Uninterrupted on a plethora of projects, and how she's been able to brand herself off the ice as an athlete! All in all, this was a conversation with a true pioneer for black women in hockey, and someone who all of us can learn from, no matter what walk of life you're in, on how to uplift the next generation, while also loving yourself, no matter what society might throw at you along the way! What's In Your Bag? Ep. 12 -Trey Phills

"Use the game, don't let the game use you" Trey Phills exemplifies this phrase better than anybody I can think of. The Yale graduate turned tech startup founder, and content creator used the game of basketball, and a professional career that spanned through the G League, NBA Summer League, and overseas to propel himself into a position that not many athletes find themselves in at just 26 years old. Now recently retired from the game, we sat down with Trey to discuss what has allowed him to get to where he is today. Dealing with the loss of his father at a young age, having to carry the legacy of an NBA parent, and navigating the difficult space that is professional basketball while also running two businesses off the court. If you're somebody looking for a blueprint on how to maximize the game, and allow it to open doors you never thought possible, then congrats, you're in the right place! Ep 9What's In Your Bag? Ep. 9 - Kyle Allman Jr.

Kyle Allman Jr. (KJ) is a guard for Paris Basketball of the EuroCup and French Betclic elite league. He is undoubtedly one of the best guards in Europe, and after excelling this past summer with the Miami Heat summer league team, could be on the verge of an NBA opportunity very soon. But that wasn't always the case. After his senior year of high school, KJ had no division one offers, and had to pay his own way to California for an opportunity to prove that he belonged on the division one level. Needless to say, four years later, he left many wondering how it was possible that this kid from New York had flown so outrageously under the radar. KJ sat down with us to discuss his improbable journey from a Mid Major, to NBA Summer League and now becoming one of the leading scorers in the EuroCup, the second best professional basketball league across the Atlantic Ocean. However, KJ is more than just an athlete. Recently he's embarked on a journey documenting his life overseas living in Paris, through a Youtube series entitled, "Life is Good". Through just the first two months, the series has already amassed over twenty five thousand views, and is undoubtedly one of the best insights into the behind the scenes life of a professional athlete that you're going to find. We talk to KJ about his inspiration behind starting the Youtube series, his reaction to it's early success, as well as plans for the future! We cap it off with some Paris fashion talk, style tips, and some absolute GEMS on how to get over shooting slumps as a pro athlete. Ep 8What's In Your Bag? Ep. 8 - Justin Robinson

Justin Robinson breaks down the ins and outs of the business of the NBA when it comes to trying to make a roster. After stints with the Washington Wizards, Milwaukee Bucks, and a few other NBA franchises, Robinson speaks on the mental toll it takes on a player trying to stick around in the league, dealing with the pressures of non-guaranteed contracts, constant trips to the G League, and getting thrown into the rotation at any given time. It's a life that doesn't come with any glamour, but if done correctly, can still earn you a very good amount of money. We get into the financials of an NBA player trying to make a roster, and why guys often will elect to stay in the G League as opposed to going overseas, and we also pick Justin's brain on his decision to forego the G League this season, to play in the Australian NBL, one fo the fastest rising league's in the world. We end it with some fashion talk of course, including the ideology behind putting together a tunnel fit, not trying to overspend while getting fly, and whether or not players should have stylists. This interview was without a doubt one of the best conversations we've had, so get comfy, and buckle up, because this one is a treat! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
