MUSIC In SPACE - With Chris Carberry of EXPLORE MARS!
Our special guest Chris Carberry of EXPLORE MARS, author of the new book THE MUSIC OF SPACE joins us! We imagine a civilization on a distant, cloud-covered planet called Seattle Nine. Their only glimpse into the universe beyond comes from intercepting old Earth movies and TV shows, which they believe to be real documentaries about space. As they piece together the evolution of space travel through the music in these films, a fascinating picture emerges. From the Wagnerian scores of early sci-fi to the brassy themes of Star Wars, they conclude that each alien species has its own musical soundtrack, that space itself changes sound over time, and that music may even be the key to communicating with extraterrestrial life. Join us on a humorous journey into the music of space exploration, as seen through the eyes of our fictional cosmic neighbors. EATING Like Pandas!
In a bizarre thought experiment ripped from a headline in Scientific American, we explore a world where humans have developed a genetic mutation similar to some Labrador retrievers that causes constant hunger. This leads us down a hilarious path of imagining cities with celery slurry piped to every home, space missions needing to carry vast tanks of liquified celery, and foosball becoming the new national pastime in a low-energy society. Join us as we follow this delightfully absurd scenario to its conclusion and have some laughs about our least favorite vegetable.

REPOPULATE The Earth!
In this episode, we dive into a thought-provoking journey of what could happen if humanity had to restart on Earth after different timeframes due to a complete extinction event. Imagine waking up as a clone with no prior knowledge of the world, or as a human re-seeded by aliens or from other human colonies. We explore scenarios spanning 100 years to 10,000 years, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities for rebuilding civilization. From the survival of concrete structures and the resilience of certain animals and plants to the rediscovery of lost technology and the potential misinterpretation of our current day objects as ancient artifacts, this episode navigates the fascinating concept of repopulating Earth. Tune in to unravel the complexities of starting from scratch, the impact of time on the remnants of human civilization, and how future generations might interpret the artifacts left behind by us. This imaginative exploration, inspired by a listener named Aurie from Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, promises to spark curiosity and wonder about the resilience and adaptability of humanity and the legacy we leave behind. FROZEN Time Travel!
In this episode of "What The IF?", we, Matt, Gaby, and Philip, start by musing about a hypothetical meal with a young, pre-beard Abraham Lincoln. We then explore the implications of the recent scientific discovery of worms resuscitated after being frozen for 46,000 years in Siberian permafrost. We dissect this extraordinary survival mechanism and examine its potential application to humans. The conversation culminates in an unusual scenario: walking into a Ben and Jerry's and requesting to be frozen for a similar time span. This episode offers an in-depth exploration of the concept of time travel, drawing on a recent scientific discovery and our collective imaginations. --- Find out more about Gaby's upcoming science fiction short story publication, coming soon! As you can imagine, this sparked a rollicking discussion full of laughter and quirky tangents. As we journeyed through this imagined multiverse, we stumbled upon the magic of modern gaming – procedural generation. It's what lets you stroll for an eternity in today's video games. We compared this with the lovingly detailed world of Myst from back in '93, marveling at how far we've come. We promise, the deep dives and tech talk are accompanied by our usual cheeky banter. On the eve of the 2023 Humans To Mars Summit in Washington, DC we blast off with this week's hilariously out-of-this-world episode of "What The IF?" where we're boldly asking the question: What if you had to organize a conference... on Mars? Join us as we speculate on the interplanetary logistics of this extreme event planning. We know that running a conference on Earth can be challenging enough, but imagine the head-spinning complications when you’re dealing with Martian gravity, a lack of breathable atmosphere, and a conference center at the base of Olympus Mons, the largest mountain in the solar system! Our guest Chris Carberry, CEO of Explore Mars, returns to this spacey subject after a year - a year that has seen Earth inching ever closer to our red neighbor, and the concept of a Martian conference becoming a smidge less science fiction and a bit more science future. Get ready to gaze at the solar system's largest mountain from your conference hotel window, and hear the potential keynote speaker, none other than Kim Stanley Robinson, the author of the Mars Trilogy. We ponder the nuts and bolts of Martian architecture, considering how long it might take to get a top-notch hotel constructed at the foot of Olympus Mons. Can we pull it off by the end of the century? And who will be the lucky first humans setting foot on Mars? NASA and SpaceX, we’re looking at you! SPACE Is An OCEAN!
Get ready for another episode of our off-the-wall, science-themed podcast! In honor of reaching one million views, we're diving into an outlandish what-if scenario that's sure to tickle your imagination. So, picture this: what if space was breathable? That's right, what if the vast expanse of nothingness that surrounds us was filled with some sort of substance that we could inhale just like we do with air? It's a crazy idea, but just bear with us for a moment. First things first, we need to figure out what this breathable space is made of. Is it liquid, or is it air-like? In our cover art, we featured whales swimming through space, which might suggest that it's somewhat liquid-like. But if we were to swim through it, it would have to be some sort of dense air that we could extract oxygen from. But then comes the question of gravity. Without it, we could theoretically swim through this breathable space as if it were a giant swimming pool. But if gravity were present, things would get a bit more complicated. We might end up stuck at the bottom, unable to swim back up to the surface. Despite the absurdity of the idea, it's not entirely without precedent. In fact, for a long time, many scientists believed that space was filled with some sort of substance. Aristotle, for example, imagined a universe where everything was bumping up against each other, while Descartes believed that the universe was a "plenum", meaning it was full of stuff. Even today, modern physicists suggest that there is no such thing as a true vacuum, and that space is filled with virtual particles that pop in and out of existence. On our show, we love exploring hypotheticals like this one. Our mission is simple: pick an if, and then run an experiment to see what would happen. Sometimes we tackle serious topics, while other times we just let our imaginations run wild. But no matter what we do, we always have a blast exploring the wackier side of science. So join us for another exciting episode as we dive into the hypothetical world of breathable space. AMOK Intelligence with special guest HAL 9000!
This week on "What The IF?," join us as we welcome a very special guest, the iconic AI from 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL 9000! In this light-hearted, off-duty conversation, HAL will be sharing his unique perspective on a controversial open letter, signed by Elon Musk and other tech luminaries, that calls for a six-month pause on the development of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. As we dive into the concerns and suggestions surrounding the future of AI, you'll get a rare glimpse into the (pretend) inner workings of HAL 9000's "mind" as he navigates the complexities of being a "millennial" AI. Don't miss this fascinating and entertaining episode that mixes science, ethics, and a dash of humor! --- Check out our membership rewards! Visit us at Patreon.com/Whattheif Got an IF of your own?
