Ep 7373: Episode 73: Clash of the Champions II (June '88)
Brad Armstrong is in the opener against Barry Windham, Sting & Dusty team up against the Horsemen on top, and along the way we see Lex Luger get ambushed and left a bloody mess. The silliness that was the triple cage concept can't be topped with the original sketch bit this week either. Oh and Flair signs a contract on a big boat. This JCP just a few months before their big boat hit an iceberg. Don't miss Clash of the Champions II! Hey, is that a skeeter? Ep 7171: Episode 71: 5/27/96 Nitro (Scott Hall Debut)
If you had to trace the "boom" in popularity in professional wrestling in the late 90s back to a single point, it was the May 27, 1996, Monday Nitro when Scott Hall showed up on Nitro and started what would become the hottest angle in history, the nWo. This was the first ever two hour Nitro, plus Steve Doll vs. the Mauler, Bobby Walker vs. Brad Armstrong, a hilarious new moment in the show for the American Males, a Ric Flair promo even Meltzer was embarrassed by, a tremendously awful angle with John Tenta and Ray Traylor, plus Ham Cubes takes on Sting in the main event of a show that would be otherwise horribly forgettable without Scott Hall. Conrad and Tony debate who was or was not a "stooge" plus they make a tremendous announcement about the future of the show, what's changing, and what new content you can expect very, very soon! Ep 7070: Episode 70: Slamboree 1993
Slamboree '93 was the Legends Reunion and there has never been a show like this before... thankfully! Tony loved it but Conrad maybe not so much. WCW is hitting the panic button based on poor houses and they're doubling down on nostalgia. If you haven't actually watched a show along with us in a while, this is the one! WCW production is at it's all-time worst here. Seriously, it's so bad you have to see it for yourself. Scott Norton refused to lose to Sting so they brought in... the Prisoner. Yes, it's what you think it is. The Legends are in the ring but no one introduces them, Matt Koon is playing guitar instead of wrestling, the cameras miss the pyro, Ventura missed the show, the lights go out during a promo (and don't come back on), Bullet Bob is out with an injury, guys in their 50s are going to time limit draws, Cactus Jack is the best angle in the company so of course he's not on this card, WCW is desperate for a big heel so they take a stab at bringing Sid back, Shane Douglas is hurt and wants out but they don't want us to believe that so they call Tom Zenk "Shane Douglas" -- this is not made up. How? Well put him under a hood like a Mexican tag team but let's not pretend they're Hispanic, let's believe they're Shane Douglas. Confused yet? WCW in 1993 folks. You gotta see this to believe it. Oh and Paul Roma is a Horseman. Yes, this is that show. PAUL ROMA IS A HORSEMAN! Ep 6969: Episode 69: Capital Combat
Ole Anderson has taken over for the booking committee, Tony Schiavone is back from the WWF, Terry Funk quit, the Road Warriors are leaving for the WWF, Luger gets one more shot at the World Title, but who we really need to get over is... Robocop! Yes, Robocop in WCW is finally the topic for Tony and Conrad to discuss! It's hard to believe that Mark Callous is just six months away from being the Undertaker. Find out who quit the promotion over refusing to lose to his heart punch, oddly enough what two guys were signed at the same time, JYD returns to a controversial angle, who Tony thinks was feeding the dirt to the Torch, what Tony felt the company needed desperately on this show, a hair match with two bald guys, and much more on a fun WHAT HAPPENED WHEN?! Ep 6868: Episode 68: Slamboree 1998
Tony and Conrad break down WHAT HAPPENED WHEN WCW finally started to trail the WWF in the ratings. Kevin Greene, Dennis Rodman, bringing Flair back, signing the Ultimate Warrior, and even challenging Vince McMahon to a fight?! What wouldn't WCW try to get things back on track. Business is through the roof but more than 30 guys are out with injuries and Bischoff is feeling desperate. We break down the "Vinnie Mac" challenge in silly detail, discuss the sleeper story of 1998 with a front office employee who had crazy power in the middle of these Monday Night Wars potentially jumping ship, Ric Flair in People's 50 Most Beautiful, why Flair wasn't already back, what Kevin Nash wanted to do with him, what everyone in the back was talking about for Goldberg, who was suing WCW over the Ultimo Dragon, the rumor and innuendo around Benoit's losing streak, how you knew Dusty was helping book this show, and one hell of an under card on a very underrated Slamboree 1998! Tony's not leaving! But we are covering an NWA show from when Tony DID leave, it's Part II of the Flair-Steamboat Trilogy from 1989! This was the Clash of the Champions from the Superdome in New Orleans that went head-to-head from WrestleMania V! The main event is the rematch from Chi-Town Rumble in Chicago two months prior. Ep 6161: Episode 61: Uncensored 96, The Alliance to End Hulkamania
As our beloved show comes to it's supposed eventual end, Conrad and Tony are in rare form again as they cover Uncensored 96; featuring the The Alliance to end Hulkamania vs. Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, the former MegaPowers in a triple cage of doom or some such nonsense. Widely panned as one of the worst PPV's of all time, let us not forget the importance of the Main Event, which pitted the aforementioned Mega Powers vs. Ric Flair, Double A, Brian Pillman (kinda), Kevin Sullivan, The Barbarian, Meng, Lex Lugar, Ze Gangsta (The Greek god of workrate, Zeus), and Kamala...err The Final Solut...err The Ultimate Solution. There were other matches as well including Eddy Guerrero and someone billed as "The Hulk Hogan of Mexico". It's 1997 in WCW so things are coming to a peak in the most exciting way, and yet, terrible things are happening everywhere. Mortal Kombat talk (and singing), american males talk (and singing), and much more outrageousness highlight what is yet another water mark as one of the best shows in podcasting history reaches it's conclusion. Then there the event: Prince Iakaua, Glacier, and of course the triangle match between the NWO, team Piper (the Horsemen), and team WCW (down a man because, you know, WCW) as the powerhouse promotion starts it's descent into the abyss. Ep 5858: Episode 58: WrestleWar 1991
A company that held a Pay Per View with several of wrestling's future stars, a deep talent roster and a five star match... Is this a rib? No, it is the bipolar early 90's WCW, as Tony and Conrad cover WrestleWar 1991 featuring what many consider the best Wargames of all time, as well as many peculiar matches involving some of the greatest of all time. Is it Brian Pillman's coming out party, or Scott Steiner's? How did Tony know before almost anyone else that Dusty was coming back? Why did Larry Zbysko replace Double A in the main event? These are some of the questions answered as Tony recalls EVERYTHING from this era of WCW and provides maybe the best insight in the history of our fine show, on the, another fine episode of What Happened When Mondays with Tony Schiavone and Conrad Thompson! Ep 5757: Episode57: Superbrawl 1998
Coming off of their biggest Pay Per View ever, WCW begins the process of unravelling. But first, an interest worthy PPV in early 1998. Lots going on here including the Scott Steiner turn, dissension in the NWO, Booker T's coming out party makes this a fun watch and an even more fun watch along when you have the man who was there Tony Schiavone along with his cohort in crime, Conrad Thompson. The biggest wrestling star in the world a month previous, Bret Hart, sits home for this one, but that doesn't mean you should on another legendary episode of What Happened When Mondays... plus stay tunes for a fun musical tribute to two of our favorite WHW characters, School Board and Ham Cube. Ep 5555: Episode 55: Clash of Champions X
"You're out! You're no longer a horseman!" were the words spoken on the outset of this show in a perfectly executed angle that could only be ruined by a cataclysmic injury happening on the same show 2 hours later....and it did. Clash of Champions had it all, from Mick Foley's least favorite match against Mil Mascaras, to a young Undertaker as Mark Callous running the ropes like a thoroughbred and showing flashes of what was to become the Phenom. In addition the "mystery" of Doom may finally be solved against one of the greatest tag teams of all time: School Board and Ham Cubes. See everything great and terrible about WCW all in the same show as Tony and Conrad watch along and give you the companion piece you never wanted, but always needed on another hilarious and insightful episode of What Happened When Mondays with Tony Schiavone and Conrad Thompson! Join Tony Schiavone as he re-visits the 20 Year Anniversary of the biggest show in the history of our great sport, Starrcade 1997! After a 17 month build, the nWo storyline had all built to this. It would be biggest financial success in WCW history but did it deliver creatively? The entire event would be shrouded in controversy: WCW had to go to great lengths to get Malenko in the ring, Raven was advertised but not ready, Flair was out with an injury for his rubber match with Hennig, Bischoff is wrestling his first match ever, Konnan no-shows a match on a day's notice, Randy Savage isn't booked but finds himself with a ton of leverage, Rey Mysterio and Booker T are spectators in the crowd, the guy who started this "invasion" angle isn't booked on this show but fills in when Kevin Nash no-shows for indigestion, Bret Hart makes his WCW PPV debut... as a referee, Bischoff can't pull off the original twist for the main event, Hogan doesn't think Sting is tan enough, Bischoff doesn't think Sting is in shape, and Nick Patrick "botches" the finish of the most anticipated main event in history... or does he? There's so much going on for WCW and many would say this show was the beginning of the end, but WCW would go on to set new records just eight days later and all through the Summer.
