S3 Ep 180Hoani Macdonald- What a Lad

It's not often we get someone on who has literally died while playing but in this episode with one of the great lads Hoani Macdonald I do. To think Hoani was given a 1% chance of surviving that day, after having a heart attack in the middle of a game, is mind blowing! It certainly makes you realise how grateful we should be to be living and it certainly made me grateful to have the opportunity to go through the crazy journey that the man they call Hoon has had. It's always good to hear stories from the earlier Stag and Highlander days, as well as hearing about his time spent in Wales with Newport and in Melbourne with the Rebels. I also personally found it really interesting hearing about his transition from playing to coaching and how hard that was especially early on. There is plenty of good stuff in this one from all ages, if you do enjoy it please give it a share it is always much appreciated. S3 Ep 179Pablo Matera- What a Lad

Pablo Matera is one of the best loose forwards in the world, he is the very passionate captain of his country Argentina and most importantly one of the great lads in the game. It was an honour to get Pablo on What a lad and go through his incredible journey so far. He's been everywhere, he's done it all. From playing in the UK with the Leicester Tigers, France with Stade Francais, NZ with the Crusaders and of course Argentina with the Jaguares and the national side. That's not to mention the next move to Japan with the Honda heat. With all that comes plenty of experiences and plenty of great stories that Pablo shares throughout this episode. Ultimately at the end of the day this podcast is about giving the listeners an insight into what these legends are like off the field and there is just no way you can't love the guy after this episode. S1 Ep 178Papa Wharewera- What a Lad

I suppose I get a lot of guests on who go on to become All Blacks or get to where they strived to be, this episode with Papa Wharewera is a bit different. The extremely talented halfback who captained NZ schools had a successful career at his feet. However, what you'll hear in this episode is the other side of pro rugby, the injuries, the pressures of juggling work/life balance, the mental health battles, all of it. I crossed paths with Papa at the Hurricanes in 2012 and to hear how much he was struggling at the time was eye opening and goes to show, that you just never know who might be going through a tough period. From someone who has been through a lot it was awesome to hear Papa is such a good place after spending time on himself to get right. He's now in a position where he wants to help others through similar situations, such a lad. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share and if you want to get in touch with Papa send him a message on [email protected] or a DM on instagram. S3 Ep 177Dan Hawkins- What a Lad

The Picton prince, Dan Hawkins is a self acclaimed white battler but what he is really most known for is being one of the games great lads. Anyone who has had anything to do with Dan will know what a champion he is and are bound to have some good stories and memories. For those who don't know him well then you're in for a treat with this episode. After living on a boat growing up it's fair to say the life of Dan Hawkins has been an eventful one. He made his Tasman Mako debut as an 18 year old, after a standout club season, all while fighting a court case. There was a huge weight on the shoulders of the young man. Things didn't quite work out with Tasman but a move up to Northland turned out to be the best thing for him. His career took off playing for the Taniwha, where he has became and still is a crowd favourite. He's also spent time with the Melbourne Rebels and Mitsubishi Dyna Boars in Japan where has some good yarns from his time there. It's hard not to like Dan Hawkins, who is such a honest lad and is super grateful for everything that has come his way. If you enjoy this chat or know someone who will, please give it a share its very much appreciated. S3 Ep 175Ngani Laumape- Announcement

The great Ngani Laumape is back on What a Lad and this time we get to hear what is next for the most destructive ball carrier in the game. I love hearing about all the factors that come into play when players make their decision on their playing future. I know a lot of people were hoping on a return to NZ rugby and back playing for their respected franchise but when you hear the details it's easy to understand why Ngani has decided to head to Kobe in Japan. It's always good to have Ngani on and man who isn't shy to tell it how it is, back himself and more often than not delivers. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share, help What a Lad grow. S3 Ep 176Jona Nareki- What a Lad

As many of you will already know, Jona Nareki is a lad! A lad with plenty of good stories from his career to date and a personality that will have you laughing away listening to this one. Known as one of the most exciting backs in the country with his speed, footwork and deceptive strength, Jona has been deadly on the wing for Otago and the Highlanders over the past few season. Unfortunately last season he did his ACL so 9 months on the sideline is never easy as a first injury. However hearing the mindset that he took into his recovery, it's no coincidence that he has returned to the form he left off at. I really enjoyed this episode, lots of lols as he would say and it's cool to share the story of one of the real characters in the game. With the arrival of Pure Sport to NZ shores there is no better time to be joined by the Pure Sport Co-Founder and absolute lad Grayson Hart! Most of you will already know Graysons story from his appearance on What a Lad in Season 1, where he shared his awesome journey through footy and life after. In this one we dig a bit deeper into the business side of things and life after footy. Having turned an idea into UKs leading wellness brand it's pretty inspiring to hear how he's done it. Ep 172Dan Perrin- What a Lad

This week I’m joined by Tasman Mako co head coach and one of the best butchers going around Dan Perrin and he’s maddd! Nothing has come easy for the man known as Piggy, hard work and patience saw him eventually have a successful rugby career, which actually started as one of the original Mako men. He also spent some time at the Crusaders before an opportunity to move up to BOP and the Chiefs came along. It was life after footy which I found really interesting in this one. Working massive shifts to get his Mad Butcher off the ground, while juggling family commitments is not easy. Not to mention the time he has put into his coaching craft on top. Piggy’s work rate is super impressive an it’s awesome to see him now being the co head coach of Tasman. As you’ll hear, Dan is a champion lad who has even offered up a 20% discount at the mad butcher Nelson for what a lad listener, absolute lad. S3 Ep 171Pek Cowan- What a Lad

It's not often I get Australian Rugby legends on What a Lad, so this episode with Western Force and Wallaby legend Pek Cowan is a real treat. Pek has been playing professional rugby for the last 17 years and is about to throw the boots on for one last season with the Wellington Lions, at the tender age of 36. Any player who has been in the game for that long is bound to have plenty of good yarns and Pek does not disappoint here! There's some classic yarns in this one from his early days at the Force, to some interesting times that were had in Japan. There were some good stories on tour with the Wallabies and the Barbarians which always deliver. It was also cool to hear about Peks plan for life after rugby which is just around the corner. As you'll hear Pek is a champion lad and an awesome guest on the podcast. If you enjoy the episode please give it a share. Ep 169Scott Hamilton- What a Lad

After plenty of requests, it was awesome to get the great Scott Hamilton on What a Lad and I now know why he was so popular! Firstly his rugby journey from the CHBS 3rd XV to becoming an All Black is inspiring in itself. He has plenty of good yarns from his Canterbury and Crusaders days and his time spent over in the UK with Leicester. It was also incredibly powerful to hear about the struggles he had with his life after rugby transition, such a common issue for so many players. I loved the honesty Scott speaks with in this one. Of course there are also some classic yarns from some times had on the beers as well. So if you enjoy a good desiel yarn then you'll enjoy this one. And if you do enjoy this episode please give the episode a like and a share and if you're feeling very generous give the podcast a 5 star rating, it's much appreciated! S3 Ep 156John Schwalger- What a Lad

Those who know John Schwalger will know he is one of the genuine good guys of our game. Such a great lad who has plenty of good stories from his career and some tough moments he has had to overcome. Obviously John has now finished his playing days which saw him have a very successful rugby career. This saw him play for the Wellington Lions, the Hurricanes, Agen and of course the All Blacks. There were plenty of highlights from his playing days and plenty of good stories from along the way. Also it was cool to hear about his transition out of the game, what caused it and also how hard he found that whole process. John certainly tells it how it is and as you'll hear, John is a true lad. Back by popular demand we got all the lads back from the Super Rugby Preview shows to look into the International Test week in particular the All Blacks v Ireland test. S3 Ep 164Kendra Cocksedge- What a Lad

We've done it, we have finally got a female on the podcast and what a guest to start! Kendra Cocksedge is a legend of the womens game here in NZ and around the world. She has recently become the most capped Black Fern of all time and has won so many awards during her career. Some of these awards include, the 2015 best womens player in the world, the 2015 best womens player in NZ and of course the 2018 best player in NZ. Huge achievements. The cool thing about this episode was hearing how Kendra got in to rugby and fell in love with the game. She has 3 other siblings all sisters, including a twin. Yet ever since she picked up a rugby ball at the age of 3 she has been in to it! It was also cool to hear a bit behind the scenes in the Black Ferns camp as they start to prepare for the massive RWC which is here in NZ. Then we are in to the big one and you'll hear one of the great debates from Tom and Searley as to why their side is going to win on Saturday. We pick our LAD of the year winner and try to predict the new LADSEARL award winner (man of the match in the final) which will be presented at the game. S3 Ep 162Ben Smith- What a Lad

Ben Smith the self acclaimed 'white battler', who has gone on to be one the the greatest outside backs of this generation. For the Highlanders, he is right up there with the best to ever pull on the Jersey. Playing in Highlanders colours 153 times, which included Co-Captaining them to the 2015 Super Rugby title. He also played a huge part in the All Blacks success in the same year helping them to the RWC victory! Off the field the man they call Bender (not actually for his bender ability) is such a lad, so highly respected by his team mates and you can see why. I throughly enjoyed this episode and the exciting thing is he is not done yet so watch this space. S3 Ep 160Naitoa Ah Kuoi- What a Lad

There is lads and then there is Naitoa Ah Kuoi! Geez there were some laughs in this one, such a character and such a lad. After his recent post match interview went viral, I had soo many of requests to get this man on and I can tell you now that he does not disappoint. The proud Wellingtonian was a gifted teenager, where he captained NZ in AFL, he was a gun Water Polo player and so good at Rugby, that he made the Wellington College 1st XV at year 10! He chose the rugby path and has not looked back, having since played for the Wellington Lions, the Chiefs, the BOP steamers and of course the NZ Maoris. So many good yarns in this one but I'll let you hear them for yourself. Once you start this episode it's hard to stop as he's such an entertaining lad. S3 Ep 159Super Rugby Preview- Quarter Finals

Finals Footy is here! We've been pumped for this weekend for ages and now it's finally here! After last weekends disaster round on the picks, it's fair to say Searley and I make it up to you this week with all the information you need to pick the games correctly. We do start with last weeks games though and what a way for the 4 teams who have finished to exit. Huge wins from the Force, Rebels, Moana and an unbelievable effort from the Drua! Like I said, terrible for the picks but great for Super Rugby and what an awesome addition the Drua and Moana have been to the comp. We also go through all the quarter finals and share our insight into the knockout matches, highlight our key players and Searley even comes up trumps with some ticket discounts! A couple of days after sitting down with Ajeet for a What a Lad episode, he messaged me. He asked if he could come back on and open up about some of his mental health struggles he has had during his tennis career. Never an easy thing to topic to talk about but such an important one. Ajeet who started playing at the age of 3 has been committed to becoming the best tennis player he can be throughout his life. Now 23 years old and winning singles and doubles tournaments around the world, he looks to be on the brink of something pretty special. S3 Ep 153Dave Porecki- What a Lad

Dave Porecki is a perfect example of how far you can get when you commit to something and you're willing to make the sacrifices. It was awesome to catch up with Dave who has been consistently putting out world class performances for the Waratahs this season and has forced his way into the Australia squad. A man of routine who boarders on a suffering from serious OCD, Dave has worked hard for everything he has got. I think this is a great episode for anyone who is trying to make it in the game or anything to be fair. It was also very interesting to hear the comparison between rugby in the UK compared to Australia. Something Dave knows well after having played many years over there with Saracen and London Irish. I wouldn't say Dave is your typical rugby lad but geez he is a seriously good lad and I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. If you do enjoy it, please give it a share. S3 Ep 149James Evans- What a Lad

If you've ever wondered what being a punter in American Football is like then this is the episode for you! In this episode I'm joined by James Evans, the 20 year old from Auckland, who is making a name for himself playing College Football for the Indiana Hoosiers. The size of college football in America is mind blowing where they are playing in sold out stadiums of up to 100,000 crazy football fans. On the back of that sort of following comes the money involved with it. Hearing about the facilities and their budget and comparing it to rugby here in NZ, it's on a whole different level. And of course James' journey to becoming a College Football player is a very cool one. A NZ rugby player who just loved kicking the ball, one day thought how cool it would be to only have to kick. After a short time at the Pro Kick academy, he has now pushed on to the big stage and hoping to push on to the NFL. As you'll here, James is a champion lad and after hearing his story I'm very excited to follow his journey. S3 Ep 151Mark Telea- What a Lad

You all know Mark Telea as one of the most dangerous wingers in rugby. He has the footwork, fend, D and work rate to be one of the greats. There is no doubt he’ll be playing internationally at some point soon, for who is the question? However, what you won’t know much about is Mark Telea the lad. With his Samoan Mum and South African Dad the man they call Mamba has great genetics for rugby. What really stood out for me in this episode was his mindset, the belief in his own ability, the ability to overcome setbacks and willingness to share what he can to help others. I really enjoyed this one, Mamba is funny, inspiring and a seriously good lad. If you enjoy your this episode too, please give it a share. S1 Ep 150Super Rugby Preview- Round 12

Geez last week really threw a few spanners in the mixer after the all the Aussie teams impressed. Although it was bad for our tips it is awesome for the competition having really competitive games across the board. This week Searley and I, review all the games from last week and a few players who stood out. For this week, we do our best to find you some winners, highlight some key players and most importantly try to find you some value for the punt. Ep 148Craig Newby- What a Lad

Craig Newby was someone that I had been told by many as being a seriously good lad and after this episode I can see why! So many good yarns in this one from Craigs playing days, which did see him play for plenty of quality sides including, North Harbour, Otago, The Blues, The Highlanders, Leicester, the NZ 7s side and the All Blacks! While there are a few good stories from on the field, it's the off field antics that you are sure love. Craig has great memory and the stories were endless when it comes to court sessions and nights out. Now the skills coach for Ulster, it was also cool to hear how he attacked his life after rugby transition and shares some really good advice throughout the episode. This week we have Jackson Garden-Bachop join us as we preview Round 11 of Super Rugby, which should be a cracker. But first, we look back on last weeks Super Round, as we review all the games and players who stood out for the round. There are plenty of players really putting their hand up for a Black jersey. It was awesome to get in insight from Jacko into some differences between the NZ and Aussie teams and hear which players have impressed him this season. Ep 146Isaia Walker-Leawere- What a Lad

There are cruisy people in this world, then there is Izzy from Gizzy! There is not much that phases big Isaia Walker-Leawere and he is one of those guys who just always seems to be having a good time. It was awesome to catch up with a man who is one of NZs most promising locks, who has a real point of difference with this power game and incredible skill set. From growing up on the East Coast of NZ, it's easy to see where Izzy gets his laid back attitude from. It was also cool to hear about how he found the adjustment into professional rugby as a teenager playing for NZ schools, NZ 20s, Wellington Lions and training with the Hurricanes before 20. Now 25 Izzy is one of the Hurricanes most experienced forwards, he’s moved up to Hawkes Bay for the NPC and has been a consistent member of the Maori All Blacks. As you’ll hear, Izzy is such a lad, he loves a laugh and a good time and he shares some of those good times throughout this episode. S3 Ep 145Super Rugby Preview- Super Round

Super Round is here, such a cool concept and an awesome weekend for any rugby fan to get along to or park up on the couch and get some exciting games of Super Rugby in. Interesting round this week with the first cross over games so it'll be good to see where the Aussie form stacks up against the Kiwi teams. So to help Searley and I this week and stop us from being too biased we're joined by the man who knows more about Aussie rugby than anyone on the planet, Mitch Evans from rugby fixation. We preview all the games and highlight the players to look out for and to finish this week we even try to predict what the final table will look like as we approach the quarter finals. Very good insight in this one from a couple of code heads, look out for the What a Lad power plays coming out this weekend and if you enjoy the episode please give it a share. Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 144Jimmy Gopperth- What a Lad

Jimmy Gopperth has had an incredible 19 year rugby career, where he has made a name for himself on both sides of the world. His consistency and his ability to kick his goals in any situation, has made him widely regarded as one of the best NZ imports into the Premiership. However before he made the move overseas, he was responsible of running the cutter for the Wellington and Hurricanes backlines, full of legends of the game. Cullen, Umaga, Lomu just to name a few. He then had a short stint with North Harbour and the Blues before a contract over in the UK with Newcastle was offered and accepted. Jimmy adapted to the different style in the Premiership quicker than most as he became the top points scorer in his first year playing. After a short and enjoyable stint with Leinster, Jimmy has since been with Wasps for the last 7 years. The fact that Jimmy is still playing to the extremely high level that he is, as he quickly approaches 39 is a truely incredible effort. With another move around the corner it'll be no surprise to see him still domianting well into his 40s. As you'll hear in this episode, Jimmy is such a great lad who has plenty of stories and experiences that he shares throughout the podcast. There has been some great games of rugby lately and some juicy match ups again this weekend! We start off by reviewing all of last weeks games, including getting Goody's thoughts on the Hurricanes v Crusaders finish. We preview all of the games for this week including potentially the game of the season, the Crusaders vs the Blues. As always we chose a player each from each game to look out for and try to find you winners where we can. S3 Ep 142Simon Hickey- What a Lad

I've never heard anyone ever say anything bad about Simon Hickey as a person. He’s a genuine lad who has had a hell of a footy career to date! An age grade superstar who was playing for Auckland as a teenager, he had a very mature head on him for a kid. He proved that as he then went on to captain the NZ u20s, even starting ahead of the great Richie Mo'unga. He made the Blues side not long after and he even captained Auckland at the age of 20! He then left for France at only 21 years old and spent 5 years overseas playing for Bordeaux and Edinburgh in Scotland. Those years opened up his eyes around how the game can be played and has since returned to NZ, unfortunately with limited opportunities. In his first year with the Hurricanes he suffered a major knee injury, which meant he missed the whole year. However he has now joined the Crusaders where competition is stiff for that 10 jersey he is battling it out with his under 20 under study. As you'll hear in this episode Simon Hickey is an absolute champion, loves a beer, loves a good time and just a real genuine lad. In this episode we review last weeks games and picks, including some of the outrageous stats thrown out there by last weeks guest Jeremy Drake. We look ahead to this weeks round and get a good insight into the highlanders camp. We all share a player to look out for and discuss the What a Lad power plays for this week. S3 Ep 139Brett Cameron- What a Lad

At just 25 years old, Brett Cameron has had a truely unique career to date. He's won almost everything there is to win in NZ Rugby with Canterbury and the Crusaders. He's even achieved what every NZ player aspires to and has become an All Black. However, even with all that, there is still the feeling that we haven't seen the best of Brett Cameron just yet. Brett has obviously spent a large amount of that career behind the great Richie Mo'unga and in this episode he speaks about the challenges involved with that. He also speaks about what inspired his move up to the Manawatu Turbos where he had an outstanding Bunnings Cup. We talk about his All Black call up and what a surreal feeling that was and then the challenges that come with being named an All Black. Brett was someone who had been requested by many to come on the podcast and I now know why. He is a champion lad, who has plenty of good stories from along the way. S3 Ep 137Conor Gilsenan- What a Lad

Conor Gilsenan, the London Irish legend, the reality TV star and one of the biggest lads you'll meet joins me this week on What a Lad. Gilly is a man who has popped up in plenty of other episodes already and with his recent appearance on the UK hit reality TV show 'The Apprentice' now was the perfect time to get him on. However there is a lot more to this mans story than a few weeks on the Apprentice. He had an incredible rugby career which saw him play for all the Ireland age group sides. He then got selected into the Leinster academy where he trained alongside some of the greats of the game, before moving over to London Irish where he became a club legend on and off the field. He's also best mates with one of the best musicians on the planet, Nial Horan. So it was cool to hear a bit about the perks that come with having a mate like him. As you'll hear, Gilly is one of those guys who is always brings good energy no matter the situation. He also loves a laugh and a good time. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share. S3 Ep 136Tom Robinson- What a Lad

Tom Robinson is one of the real characters in NZ Rugby, so it was awesome to get him on What a Lad and hear some of his classic yarns! Big Tom has had a different pathway to the top to most these days, not playing NZ age group but after going on a serious bulking diet things started to happen pretty quickly. He became an instant legend at the Northland Taniwha and then was picked up by the Blues where his consistent performances saw him lead the side to 2021 Super Rugby Trans Tasman success. But what I loved about this episode is hearing how much fun this lad has off the field. Whether it's exploring new places in his yacht or van, or pranking his flatmates, everything he does just seems to be good fun. It was also cool to hear how he started his recently launched business, Zinc or Swim. a really cool natural zinc product. Go and check it out! However, the lad and on fire tipster, Searley from Searley talks Sport does and as always brings some great energy and insight. S3 Ep 134Stephen Donald- What a Lad

Stephen Donald has one of the greatest stories in sport. From a man who copped so much public criticism, he couldn’t even go to the supermarket without hiding his identity. To becoming literally the hero of a nation after kicking the penalty to win the 2011 RWC! The story has been told through the blockbuster movie, ‘The Kick’, which was all based around the famous call up to the All Blacks leading up to the RWC final. However what you’ll hear in this episode is the whole story before that event and how that one moment really did change his life. On top of the great story, the man known as Beaver, is also with out a doubt one of the best lads to have ever played the game! Such a champion with plenty of great yarns from his career. S3 Ep 132Richie Mo’unga- What a Lad

Richie Mo'unga is without a doubt one of the best players in the game and somehow even a better lad! It was awesome to get one of the greats on the Swysh What a Lad podcast and go through his journey. From a young kid who always believed he would get to where he is, I loved hearing the mindset that Richie has had on his way to the very top. After missing out on the NZ schools team, a set back he struggled with at the time. He now looks back at that miss selection, as a 5 time Super Rugby winner with the Crusaders and a key member in the All Blacks. I throughly enjoyed this episode, I think this could be an extremely helpful episode for any young player coming through. Richie Mo'unga is without a doubt a lad!
