S4 Ep 230Anton Lienert-Brown - What a Lad

Here it is, the last episode of season 4 and as always I love to finish the season with one of the all time lads and who better than the All Black and Chiefs legend Anton Lienert-Brown. Anton in my eyes has been someone who has been a real trailblazer for keeping things real, openly speaking about the highs and lows of his rugby journey. In this episode he goes in to detail about.. The recent Rugby World Cup and his feelings pre and post some of those special games How he went from being a Prop in year 9 to a CHBS 1st XV star in year 13 The influence Wayne Smith had on getting him up to Waikato and the Chiefs Playing his first professional game at just 18yo, against the Bulls, at Loftus and the emotions that came with a disappointing debut. His battle with aniexty leading up to becoming an All Black and what has helped him handle it. His All Black career and some memorable moments, And heaps more. Anton is a champion lad who has had an incredible journey, I'm sure you will enjoy this one and if you do please give it a share. Also thanks for tuning in to another season of What a Lad, grateful for all the support and really excited about whats ahead in season 5! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 229Kayla Ahki- One of the greats!

We always hear about the journey from an athletes point of view but never from the one behind the scenes doing all the hard work. However in this episode with Kayla Ahki we get the best of both. The former NZ 7s rugby super star was the best female player in the game in 2013 after switching from Netball not long before. She won World Series Circuits and even a Silver Medal at the Olympics, while her combination of speed and strength made her a genuine star of the game. Now this is the part as males we take for granted, the decision during your player career to become a parent. Kayla who is the wife of Tongan and Toulouse super star in his own right Pita Ahki, her decision for someone who’s at the top of the game to take time out to become a Mother and a supportive wife is really cool to hear. In this episode Kayla talks in detail about.. Growing up in a Rugby family ( Dad Charlie McAlister- Maori All Black, Brother Luke McAlister- All Black) Her pathway into the Mystics at a young age Why she decided to make the switch to 7s from Netball The challenges that came with becoming a Mum while still having the dream to be out there playing The challenges involved with the role of being the support for Pita through his rugby journey And heaps more. Kayla has done amazing things for the women’s game on and off the field and it was awesome to hear her journey. She’s full of good energy and has an incredible journey to share. I know you’ll enjoy this one. Be sure to check out Kaylas podcast life from the sidelines too link here Life from the Sidelines Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 228Paul Iffil- What a Lad

Gambling addictions are growing in society rapidly and even more so if professional sport. Disposable income, plenty of spare time and chasing that buzz you get from professional sports make pro athletes high risk. As you'll hear in this episode with one of the greats Paul Iffil, it was those things that had him lose around 2 Million pounds in his career. Paul was an English Football star playing in some of the biggest games against some of the biggest names. New Zealanders will know him more for his prolific goal scoring record with the Wellington Phoenix. Like all athletes Paul had his struggles with injuries, form and non selection but the biggest struggle for him throughout his career was his gambling. In this episode we go through some plenty including.. Why Paul's first pro Football contract worked out to be less than his academy contract. How a scratchy addiction as a teenager turned into a gambling addiction. How Paul ended up in NZ with the Wellington Phoenix. Plenty of incredible gambling stories with some of the amounts mind blowing. How his negative self talk held in back from becoming a English Premiership super star, How Paul managed to eventually break his gambling addiction a become 6 years clean, And heaps more! It's very rare to find someone willing to come on and talk about the dark side of a gambling addiction but super grateful to Paul for coming on and sharing so openly. If you know someone who needs to hear this one please forward it on to them and it might just make the difference. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 227Ged Robinson- Life after Rugby

The life after rugby transition has been a struggle for so many who have been through it and as you’ll hear in this episode with Ged Robinson, it doesn’t have to be that way. Our mindset around how we approach this next stage of our life needs to change and there are many pieces of absolute gold advice in here from Ged. The former professional rugby player who played for plenty of teams including Manawatu, Wellington, Hawkes Bay and Canterbury and in Super Rugby played for the Hurricanes, Rebels, Highlanders, Crusaders has plenty of good stories throughout his journey. However it's the life after rugby transition is where you will be inspired. What we go through in detail in this episode is.. How Ged went from the chubby hooker that the academy didn't want to becoming a Junior All Black. How what you learn in professional sport actually sets you up for an even bigger career after. The challenges you will face when you hit life after rugby so you can prepare for what's ahead. Plenty of tips for anyone approaching that next phase of their career, And much more. As you'll hear in this one, Ged is a natural story teller who is passionate about helping others through that next phase. A true lad who I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to. S4 Ep 226Corey Flynn- What a Lad

Corey Flynn is the definition of a lad! He's just one of those truely genuine good blokes who has had a rugby career take him on some journey. He's had some huge achievements like winning the Rugby World Cup but hearing what he had to go through to get that opportunity made it so much more special then the trophy. In this episode we got through plenty including, The tough decision to leave Southland to go to Canterbury and the Crusaders. Being named in the 2003 RWC squad out of no where (crazy story how he found out) A rough patch in his career much revolved around injuries and drinking How he got out of that rough patch to force his way back into the All Blacks His time in France and Scotland, Even playing heartland for Westcoast, and much much more. I'd had plenty of requests to get Flynny and after this conversation I now know why, he's so honest and open in this episode as well as sharing plenty of good stories from his time. I know you'll enjoy this one! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 225The RWC Final- Dance in France final Review

That’s it! The 2023 RWC is all over and man has that taken us on an emotional rollercoaster. So much to discuss in this last ever episode of the Dance in France review show. It’s been awesome having Searley and Jacob Atkins join me for the RWC to give their analysis and for this one last time they go hard. 7 out of the 8 knockout games came down to the last play! Again the final was no different, the All blacks playing a majority of the game with 14 men, South Africa playing with plenty of passion, winning collisions. Tension was high, drama was even higher. You’ll hear all our thoughts in the episode but incredibly proud of the All Blacks and their performance. We also talk the 3rd and 4th playoff game, how we think we can fix the TMO issue with our game, fantasy rugby wrap up and heaps more. I’ve really enjoyed bringing these episodes to you, hopefully in 4 years time we are even bigger and better! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 224Hugh Renton- Mental Health

Hugh Renton is one of the NZ rugbys hard men, he's tough, he's aggressive and he has a reckless regard for his body. He's also had to be very tough mentally with some of the challenges he has faced in his professional career to date. From being signed on a 3 year contract with the Hurricanes straight out of school with a non functional arm, to losing his Dad to suicide. Hugh has had plenty to deal with. The best thing from all that, is he has learnt so much about himself and the mind through his journey and is wanting to share what he's learnt to help other. He has always had an incredible work ethic and his desire to become better, learn more about the mind, means he has plenty of good advice to share. After releasing Shanes episode last week it's clear there is so much that needs to be done in this space so I hope that some of the tools Hugh shares are beneficial for you all. Hosted on Acast. S4 Ep 223RWC Dance in France- The Final

Here it is! We are at the pinnacle of the sport a Rugby World Cup final with 2 of the most dominant teams in the history of the sport going at it as the mighty All Blacks get set to take on the Springboks. What a way to finish which has been such an incredible World Cup. So many good games and I’m sure this weekend will be no different. As always on here, we are joined by two of the great rugby analysis in the form of Searley from Searley talks sport and Jacob Atkins as we review last weeks semi finals. Plenty to review in those 2 games with the All Blacks being far too good for Argentina and South Africa using their get out of jail free card on England. We obviously go through the final in an in depth review and try to predict what we can expect to see out there on Saturday night in France. Also touching on the Bronze playoff game . Also to finish we share our initial thoughts to announcement of the new RWC format and the new Nations Championship. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 222Shane Christie - What a Lad

Shane Christie is one of NZ's great lads! This is one of the the most honest, raw and engaging episodes I've ever done, as we talk about topics which are very close to home, like concussion in rugby and the incredibly sad passing of a good mate Billy Guyton. Many will know Shane as a Super Rugby winner with the Highlanders, or an NPC winner with Tasman as both a player and coach, or maybe even for his time with the NZ Maori All Blacks. However I think what every one loves about Shane Christie, is he always tells it how it is. That doesn't stop here either as he shares... - His unique pathway to becoming a professional rugby player, which included building and playing Club for 7 years! - The disappointing first season with the Crusaders. - His move to the Highlanders and how they found success in 2015. - How hard ending his career with concussion was - The post footy transition into coaching - The depth he has gone to to help recover from his concussion symptoms, and heaps more. I've been waiting a long time to get this man on and I am so happy he agreed to come on, he's a true lad! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 221RWC Dance in France- Semi Finals

Before we start talking Semi Finals, lets sit back and take in what was the best weekend of Rugby you will see! Some of the most entertaining, competitive and intense games you will see, topped of by an All Blacks v Ireland game for the ages. 37 phases deep playing for the win, it truely was edge of the seat stuff. France v South Africa was in the same boat for intensity and drama! While both Wales v Argentina and Fiji v England both went right down to the wire. There's been lots of complaining about the draw but with that weekend of rugby viewing I am not complaining. We do also look forward to the Semi Finals in this episode, both Searley and Jacob Atkins share their thoughts for the games after some in depth analysis. I also share made fantasy rugby update and a surprise tactic I'm going to run this week to try and catch the pack. So much in this one, if you enjoy it as always please give it a share Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 220Phill Jones- What a Lad

Phill Jones is one of the best shooters of a Basketball this country has ever seen. He scored thousands of goals in his 23 year career, which included at least 163 games for the Tall Blacks. The Reefton Kid had plenty to discuss in this one which includes.. Coaching his son Hayden who at 16 is already playing in the NBL (his daughters Maia and Ava are also very talented) Growing up in the small town of Reefton His pathway from Nelson College to the Nelson Giants Some crazy stories about playing basketball in Greece, Finland and Italy Playing for the Tall Blacks at tournament like the World Champs and the Olympics Playing against 'The Dream Team' and some of the best players in the world like Lebron James Scoring 105 points in one game! And heaps more. Phill is such a good lad who has had an incredible career, it was awesome getting an insight into the world of professional basketball. After hearing Phill talk it's clear to see how he managed to play at such a high level for so long, he's as competitive as they get. Really enjoyed this one and I know you will too. S4 Ep 219RWC Dance in France - Quarter Finals!

How good is this Rugby World Cup! You couldn't ask for a more even, hard to predict quarter final games than what we have here. 4 Northern Hemisphere teams taking on 4 Southern Hemisphere teams, with all 4 Northern Hemisphere teams going in as favourites for the first time ever. So much to talk about in this episode but before we look forward we must look back to the incredible week that has been with Portugal creating scenes winning their first ever RWC game. Ireland putting on an absolute clinic! France and the ABs way to good in their games and heaps more. Fantasy rugby has hit QF stages too so theres a few things to think about there and this is the toughest week for fantasy rugby yet. Seriously fizzed for this weekend of Rugby! Hosted on Acast. Ep 218Charlie Gubb- What a Lad

Charlie Gubb is one of my all time favourite Warriors, not just because of the way he played on the field (even though he was an absolute animal) but more importantly because of how big of a lad that he is off it. Gubby is the kind of team mate everyone loves to have in the team environment, loves a yarn, loves banter and just loves being around the lads. What I didn't realise before going into this podcast was the incredible journey Rugby League took him on! Some of the interesting points were.. How he made his own highlights package and posted it to all the NRL clubs to get his first opportunity, How he eventually worked his way into the Warriors and some classic stories from his time with them, Why he moved to the Raiders (another crazy story that) followed by a move to the UK, His battles with concussion and mental health, Why he walked out on his contract in the UK, and how he ended up starting up Wellingtons favourite porta loo company, Porta Kings. This is deadset one of the funniest episodes so far. I found myself laughing away through this episode at the time and then in the edit. At the end of this episode you'll realise why everyone regards the great Charlie Gubb as one of the all time great team mates. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 217RWC Dance in France Preview- Round 5

The last round of pool play is here and knockout rugby has come a week early for a few teams, which makes for a couple of mouth watering clashes to finish pool play. Jake the snake and I first look back at the week that was where we talk about the absolute clinic the All Blacks put on Italy as well as all the other match ups from last week. I review my fantasy rugby week and how Darcy Graham changed my week and I think it's an easy week for fantasy players this week with some real clear options to get maximum points this week. Then Searley and I talk through the games for this week, which includes a couple of beauts in the form of the Ireland v Scotland game and the Japan v Argentina game, with quarter finals on the line. It's also the last chance for teams to show us what they've got before leaving the tournament or heading into the quarter finals so a huge week ahead. Hosted on Acast. S4 Ep 216Brad Mika- What a Lad

Big Brad Mika was one of those guys I loved watching growing up, an absolute beast with the skill set of a back. Capped by the All Blacks just 3 times, after some outstanding years of Super Rugby, where he played for the Crusaders, Blues and the Hurricanes. He's now transitioned into Coaching where he has been coaching in Malaysia for the last 7 years. In this episode we go through.. Life and coaching in Malaysia Growing up doing every sport with his mum having to carry his passport Playing 1st 5 through most of his school days Debuting for Auckland at 18 and what the environment was like back then Being drafted by the Crusaders Making the All Blacks after one year of Super Rugby Moving around the different Super Rugby teams and comparing the cultures His tough time in France Struggling with knee issues And heaps more. It was awesome to get this humble legend on What a Lad because he is just that and I'm sure you will enjoy listening to this one. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 215RWC Dance in France Preview- Round 4 pool play

How good is the RWC, no game for the All Blacks but that didn’t stop the drame, Aussie gone, Dupont with a facial fracture, Ireland win the battle of the giants it was all go! Plenty to get through in this review with searley and snake. I Also review my fantasy week and give you my thoughts for this weekend. It is a tough week so plenty of thought needs to go into your team for this week. We then jump into the preview and some tricky match ups this weekend with a few split decisions from the panel and we even look a few weeks ahead to our predicted quarter finals. Those games are going to be incredible and extremely tough picking winners in all 4 of those games. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 214Sam Matavasi- What a Lad

Sam Matavasi is someone who certainly hasn't had the typical pathway to the top. In this episode we go through his incredible journey of being the young talent who's drinking and poor work ethic held him back from going professional out of school. To where he is now playing for Northampton in the English premiership and of course Fiji at this RWC. Other things we discuss in this episode are... The rise of Fiji at the Rugby World Cup An insight into the camp of everyones 2nd favourite team. Growing up in Cornwell with his 2 brother Josh and Joel. The devestating loss of his mother when aged 13 and how he eventually dealt with that. His decision to join the Navy How he ended up in this pro rugby career. His new Rum he has just launched with his brothers. And heaps more. S4 Ep 213RWC Dance in France Preview- Pool Play round 3

How good is the Rugby World Cup, huge wins from NZ, SA and Ireland. Fiji with a massive win in the context of the competition in one of the games of the tournament. England scoring tries. Last week had everything so the lads are all back on board to talk everything RWC both reviewing last week and previewing the week ahead. There are some very juicy match up this week with South Africa v Ireland the pick of them and surprisingly we all agree on the winner of that game and it might not be who you expect. Aus v Wales has a split decision here but that's a huge game for the pool and lots more good games to follow especially if you're playing fantasy rugby. There's some must buys this week for fantasy so tune in to the episode to find out who they are. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 212Phil Burleigh- What a Lad

Phil Burleigh is one of those lads you just can't not like. A top man who has had a very interesting career which has seen him have the highs of playing internationally for Scotland and the lows of battling through some tough injuries. However he has got through those and remarkably is still going strong today as he fast approaches 37. In this episode we go through plenty of good yarns which include... His current situation in Japan with Kyuden His pathway to professional rugby and why he had to leave Canterbury His Super Rugby time with the Chiefs and how he then became a Highlander which is a crazy yarn. Is time at the Highlanders and some funny yarns about Jamie Joseph His move to Edinburgh which lead to playing international rugby for Scotland And heaps more. Such an enjoyable episode this one, you'll understand by the end of it why so many people regard Phil as one of the great lads. If you enjoy this episode, there's 3 thing you can do for me to help. Ep 210Danny Cipriani- What a Lad

What an incredible journey Danny Cipriani has had on and off the field! On it he's one of the best ball players at the line we have seen, his understanding of the game is next level and has played some incredible rugby over his 18 year career. The biggest mystery is to why such a talent only ended with 16 caps for his country and something we discuss in detail throughout the episode. Off the field it's like a TV drama, so much has gone on it's hard to believe it's been his life. He's a man who seem's to have things come to him whether it's paparazi, women and off field incidents, it certainly has been an eventful journey. What Danny has been through and seeing him out the other side so content and in love is inspiring. I'm sure whatever opinion you had on Danny Cipriani before listening to this episode you'll finish it thinking what a lad he is. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Piri Weepu is a true NZ rugby legend, the instinctive halfback had a unique ability as a 9 and showed all his talents as he helped guided the All Blacks to the 2011 RWC when the nation started the 'Keep Calm Piri is on' movement. Cory Jane is widely regarded as one of the all time great wingers with a combination of his sharp footwork, deadly fend and ability under the high ball. S4 Ep 202Tj Va’a- What a Lad

TJ Va'a was a school boy star and one of the brightest prospects coming through NZ rugby. The reality of this sport is that not every gifted young player gets to have the careers that they all hope for and TJ certainly fits that category. He played for the Wellington Lions as a teenager and also made the Hurricanes wider squad and he was well on his way to becoming a household name. Unfortunately straight after school he went on a shocking run of injuries which lead him to retiring at the young age of 21! The challenges of the transition to life after rugby is incredibly tough even after a full career let alone it being taken away from you 3 years in while hardly getting a shot. TJ talks about all the battles he faced mentally with the situation he was in and shares so much good advice for anyone transitioning or struggling with mental health or injuries. I really enjoyed this episode, I think plenty will benefit from it so if you do enjoy it please give it a share. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 204Oliver Hoskins- What a Lad

In this episode you'll hear the brutal reality of professional sport, one minute Ollie Hoskins has 2 more years left on his significant London Irish contract, the next minute he has nothing! What makes it worse is that there are now 50 other players in the same boat, on top of the players from Wasps and Worcester meaning that negotiation power as a rugby player is incredibly low. That's not to mention the staff either, so the collapse of London Irish has been very tough times for all involve. However it was great to get an insight into how thar whole process went down from the most passionate London Irish man I know. It was also cool to go through his journey from growing up in Perth and going from being a massive Western Force fan to becoming a Western Force player. A converted loosie who was moved into prop shares his battles with becoming a frontrower and all the mental struggles he had to overcome to get to where he is today. Even how Ollie became a one cap Wallaby is a fascinating story in itself! So much in this episode to get your ears around and as you'll hear Ollie is an absolute lad! Hosted on Acast. S4 Ep 203Sione Havili Talitui- What a Lad

I'm super grateful to get Sione Havili Talitui on What a Lad this week, I know it's not easy to go on a podcast when English is your second language but I'm so glad Sione was brave enough to come on and share his story. It's a story that I think will inspire many young islanders to chase their dreams and gives valuable insight into what a transition from Tonga to NZ as a schoolboy is like. I know Sione as one of the toughest players in the game, he's not a big man but not many hit harder than the Tongan axe. I really enjoyed hearing how he grew up in Tonga after being adopted at birth, how he handled his move to NZ without speaking any english and how the pressure of being the 'Golden Boot' winner at school level may have held him back more than it help him. Sione has had a very successful career here in NZ winning 2 NPC titles and 4 Super Rugby title and about to head off to the RWC with Tonga. As you'll hear Sione is an absolute lad who is an inspiration for so many. If you enjoy this epsiode please give it a share. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 201Ryan Crotty - What a Lad

When I saw Ryan Crotty strolling down my street the other day I thought I need to get this Canterbury, Crusader and All Black legend on the podcast because he is one of the great lads! Fresh after returning from Japan after winning the Top League with Kubota, Crotts was straight back helping out at the Crusaders at training which basically sums up what a lad this man is. In this episode he goes through his pathway through the NZ ranks which saw him go from being the ball boy for Dan Carter to playing outside him in the space of a few years. Ryan talks about some of his tougher years battling with injuries in particular concussion and also missing out on selection for the 2015 RWC. There was also plenty of good times to reminisce on as well, winning 7 NPC title, 3 Super Rugby titles, 5 Rugby Championships and heaps more. As you will hear Ryan Crotty is one of those genuine good guys who has an awesome mindset towards life. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 200Jack Goodhue- What a Lad

For episode 200 I could not think of a better guest than the large chested All Black midfielder Jack Goodhue! It was so good to get him on What a Lad to share plenty of laughs and thoughts from his career to date. Jack the proud Northland boy has had a career many dream of. Winning NPC titles with Canterbury, winning 6 Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders and becoming an All Black all make for a great CV. Amongst all that success is also a fair amount of hard times as well, in particular dealing with long term knee injuries. It was awesome to hear how he managed to deal with these and some advice for anyone in a similar situation. He also talks about his beloved mullet, how one book changed his life and he even tells the story on why his testicles distracted him from is All Black call up. I'm sure you will all enjoy this episode and if you do remember to please give it a share. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 199Greig Laidlaw- What a Lad

When I think of Scotland Rugby I straight away think Greig Laidlaw, the absolute lad who has captained his country more than any other player. He's also someone who has had so many great experiences playing all around the world which included Edinburgh in Scotland, Gloucester in England, Clermont in France and the Shining Arcs in Japan. Over his career he was known as one of the best goal kickers in the game and ended up with the 2nd most point ever scored for Scotland. Having just retired from the game it's always cool to hear the story from the start all the way through and how he has gone straight into coaching next season in Japan. Full of good stories this one and although I had never actually meet Greig before it felt like I'd known him for years, such a lad! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 198Sevu Reece & George Bower- What Lads

What’s better than having one Crusader and All Black legend on the podcast? Thats right, having two of them and for this episode we have just that, with Sevu Reece and George Bower coming on together. Both Sevu and George have just had major knee surgery which will rule them out for the the year including the RWC. So disappointing for them and all that fans that we won’t get to see them on the biggest stage, however it was awesome to hear both of their mindsets and plans for the 9months recovery. Both men have incredibly cool stories on how they got to the All Black jumper too. Sevu who lived in Fiji until moving to Hamilton Boys on a rugby scholarship burst on to the scene with an incredible debut season with the Crusaders which saw him make his All Black debut the same year. While George battled away in the Taita College 2nd XV and played many years in the Dunedin Club scene before eventually getting his chance at Super Rugby winning the competition in his first season. I loved this episode, two great Fijian lads who have had incredible careers and plenty of good stories and advice for you to enjoy. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 197Paul Williams- What a Lad

If there is one job in rugby that is under appreciated it has to be the referee, such a tough job in such a complex game where the expectation is to always be right. This week I was lucky enough to have Paul Williams on What a Lad and Paul is in my opinion one of the best referees in the game. It's always good to get an insight into a different side of the game and hearing more about life as a referee is fascinating. I also think hearing Paul speak helps you realise that he is just a good lad who is making spilt second decisions to the best of his ability. I really enjoyed this episode and grateful to have Paul come on and share some valuable insight in to being a ref and some good yarns. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 196Stacey Waaka- What a Lad

Stacey Waaka is one of the biggest stars in the womens game, she has been a key member of the successful NZ womens 7's side as well as the Black Ferns! She has won gold medals at the Commonwealth games and the Olympics and has also won the RWC in both forms of the game. The journey of Stacey's rugby career has been over a period of time where the women's game has changed dramatically. Women's rugby is one of the fastest growing team sports in the world and after seeing the Black Ferns sell out Eden Park I am not surprised. Stacey is hugely admired around the world and she is such a good role model for any young athlete looking to make it in the game. I really enjoyed this one, awesome story, great energy and Stacey is just an all round good sort. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 195Codie Taylor- What a Lad

Codie Taylor is one of NZ rugbys great lads, a champion man on and off the field. He's also one of the best hookers in the modern era where his speed and skillset set him apart. Codie is someone who takes great care of his body, he has a rigorous training and recovery schedule which has certainly helped him avoid injuries throughout his 12 year career to date. However that doesn't mean its all smooth sailing, hearing him speak about how tough it can be under the spotlight when your form isn't where you'd like it to be was interesting. Codie has also launched his own recovery and performance drink called Eclipse, an unreal drink! That was cool to hear about how he got into running his own business and what he has learnt from that experience. I really enjoyed this one, Codie Taylor is one of the greats. S4 Ep 194Israel Dagg- What a Lad

Israel Dagg is one of the all time greats! At his peak the gifted fullback made rugby look easy, even in the All Black jersey in some of the biggest tests In his first ever podcast appearance, Izzy Dagg is incredibly open and honest about his journey through the good and the bad. He obviously had some amazing highs in the game such as winning Super Rugby with the Crusaders and the 2011 RWC at home. However like everyone he has had some real tough periods to get through too and the moment when he got caught going out before the RWC quarter final is certainly one. With his life after footy being a huge success for him becoming a Radio host with SENZ and TV star, it was surprising to hear how much he struggled once he rugby career had finished. So grateful to have Izzy come on and be so honest and vulnerable, he really is an absolute lad. Cheers to our mates at Speights for sponsoring this episode. Hosted on Acast. S4 Ep 193Tim Bateman- Life after Rugby

Life after rugby or life after professional sport is hard. As you would’ve heard in previous episodes with retired players, everyone handles it differently. The goal of this episode is to help prepare players better for that transition and who better to give advice than the legend Tim Bateman. Timmy has nailed his transition, he’s formed NZ’s largest wellbeing centre in @ostudio_nz, he’s written and released 2 top selling children’s books, he’s coaching the Crusaders development team, he’s a great father to his kids and husband to his wife and he is just a champion all round lad. However as you’ll hear, even Tim has struggled with life post footy but what he has done, is he has narrowed it down to 6 challenges. These challenges are what he believes are key to overcoming to nail the transition. Even thinking about and/or understanding some of these challenges, I think will help massively for when that time comes. This is a podcast I wish I could’ve done 5 years ago as some of Timmys theory’s are gold for anyone coming to the end. If you know someone who is coming to the end of their sporting career, sharing this episode with them could help them massively so please do so. Also thanks to our mates at speights for sponsoring this episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 192Eljiah Taylor- What a Lad

Elijah Taylor is a Rugby League legend here in NZ. He has played big roles for NRL sides including the Warriors, Panthers and Tigers, as well as playing internationally for the Kiwis. He is a man with the drive to succeed more than most and has put everything into his rugby league career, which is still going strong today. He is also a qualified pilot and a future rap star, a man of many talents! However, the bulk of this episode is about one of the craziest stories I've ever heard. During his career his manager stole over 400k from his bank account! I love how open and honest Elijah is in this episode, he's a seriously good lad who just wants no one else to be in the same position he got in to. If you enjoy this episode as much as I did please give it a share. And thanks to our mates at Speights for bringing you this episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep 191Michael Fatialofa- What a Lad

The Speights What a Lad podcast season 4 is under way and what a guest to start! Michael Fatialofa was one of the toughest players on the field I ever played with and he proved he was even tougher off it after a life changing tackle. While playing for Worcester, Michael Fatialofa was hit awkwardly in a tackle that caused him to be Paraliyzed from the neck down and told he will never walk again. From that moment his life completely changed and hearing the battle he has gone through the last 3 years left me feeling inspired, sad and proud of what he has been able to achieve. This episode is an awesome reminder to be truely grateful for everything you have in your life, as like in Michaels case it can literally be taken away from you over night. I'm so grateful for Fat's coming on What a Lad and speaking so openly about his journey, it is one of the most powerful and inspiring episodes yet! If you enjoy this episode please give it a share! Cheers to our mates at Speights for bringing you this episode, good on ya mate! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 190Tamati Ellison- What a Lad

Here it is, the last episode of Season 3 and there is no better way to finish what has been a massive season then with greatest lad of them all Tamati Ellison! The gifted singer, actor, rugby player, baby maker and coach has had some journey to date and there was so much to go through in this one. From his child acting days to his pathway into the All Blacks and so many good stories along the way. Tamati is widely regarded as one of the best lads you could meet and after listening to this episode I'm sure you will see why. I loved this conversation and enjoyed listening back to it even more. S3 Ep 189Noah Hotham- What a Lad

Noah Hotham is one of the most exciting young rugby talents on the planet and it was a pleasure to get him on the podcast and go through the first 19 years of the young mans life. The Tasman Mako and NZ u20 star has burst on to the NZ rugby scene in 2022 and has just signed a 3 year deal with the Crusaders. It's not often kids come straight out of school in the physical shape Noah did but after hearing about his time at Hamilton Boys it now all makes sense. Noah is fit, fast and strong and has an incredible ability to break open a game which was proven in this years Bunnings Cup scoring 7 tries himself. This young man has a massive future in the game and he is an absolute lad. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share, it'd be much appreciated. Ep 188Jamie O’Donnell- What a Lad

Breathing is something we do every minute of the day and it's crazy how many of us don't breathe correctly including myself. It's mind blowing to hear how beneficial changing the way you breathe can be for high performance sport or everyday life. So in this episode I catch up with the breath guru Jamie O'Donnell and talk all things breathing. This episode will definitely make you think about the way you breath and hopefully you pick up some tips on how you can breathe better and perform better or live a better lifestyle. I can't really do the episode justice by writing about it so give it a listen and if you enjoy it or know someone who would benefit in hearing it then please give it a share. Ep 187Colin Slade- What a Lad

After however many episodes I have done so far, it's clear that every single rugby career is full of up and downs. In Colin Slade's case, the highs were some of the biggest highs you can get in the game, kicking match winning conversions for the All Black and winning plenty of titles, including 2 RWCs. However when I think of players who had an unfair amount of injuries, Colin Slade would be right up there. Double digits surgeries, double digit concussions and even when he needed his body the most during the 2011 RWC he went down with a groin injury. Sladey has also experienced rugby all around the world and I felt like he summed up the differences between the different countries perfectly. He also shares plenty of good stories from along the way and some great advice mixed into this one too. As always if you enjoy this episode please give it a share. Ep 186Tony Lamborn- What a Lad

After the recent retirement of the great American International Tony Lamborn, I knew I just had to get him on and man he does not dissapoint! A man who has never been shy to tell it is, does exactly that in this episode with some unreal yarns. Having played for plenty of team's all over the world, Tony has plenty of unique experiences on and off the field. It was also really cool to hear him speak about some of the struggles he has faced and how he managed to get through the tough times. I'm sure after listening to this episode you'll have a good idea of what the man Tony Lamborn is like off the field. He is an absolute lad who loves a good time. Now Moo is one of my best mates and even I learnt heaps about him in this one and I even learnt heaps in general. From parenting advice to rugby and life advice, this episode has it all. Ep 184Matt Duffie- What a Lad

Our first ever dual code international has jumped on What a Lad in the form of one of the greats Matt Duffie! Matt who started off as a teenager with the Melbourne Storm playing with the big 4 Greg Inglis, Cam Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater! He then had the chance to represent the Kiwis before being hammered by injuries which eventually saw him switch codes. After a rough start in Super Rugby with the Blues and spending a lot of the season playing club. He worked hard, he learnt the game, he found his form, and went on to be one of the best outside backs in the country, which saw him named as an All Black. The Matt Duffie story like so many guys careers, is full of highs and lows but something he wouldn't change at all, shaping him into the lad he is today! Such a good episode this one and heaps of great insights and tips into becoming a professional rugby player or athlete. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share! Ep 183Ricky Riccitelli- What a Lad

What a guest Ricky Riccitelli was to get into the What a Lad studio for the last time, this man is a seriously good lad and there were plenty of laughs had in this episode. The South African born, Taranaki raised, front rower has had some career to date and at still only 27 has plenty more to give. He started his professional footy career with Hawkes Bay and the Hurricanes where he played a huge role as a young fella to win their first ever Super Rugby title in 2016. He has since moved home to Taranaki and moved up to the Blues for a new opportunity as he pushes to get back into the All Blacks frame. I know you are going to enjoy this one as there are some classic stories in it and when I'm laughing during my edit it's generally a sign that you'll be laughing too. Ep 182Shaun Stevenson- What a Lad

It was awesome to get Shaun 'Shooter' Stevenson on What a Lad, this time for a yarn and not a prank about a dodgy DVD store. Although it was good to hear his side of the story from that prank! Shooter has a lot going on at the moment, he is obviously coming off a massive season with North Harbour in the NPC, where he was one of the best players in the comp. He has since some how missed out on the All Black XV, so he shares his thoughts on that. He has also had a phone call from the great Wayne Bennet, who has shown interest in getting his services to the Dolphins in the NRL. So there is certainly plenty to talk about in this one! Shooter has also been playing professionally since just 18 years old and now 7 years on, he is playing better than ever. His series against Ireland for the NZ Maoris, proved that he was ready for international footy. He's also a champion lad, who has a very laidback style and plenty of yarns. S3 Ep 181Joe Royal- What a Lad

If you've played rugby in NZ in the last decade, it is highly likely you have either played with or against this great lad, Joe Royal. Joe has had a different career to many of the guests who have been on already, there were certainly no fast tracked contracts here. Joe spent 7 years battling away in the Auckland club rugby scene before deciding to take a risk and give it a crack with the BOP Steamers. A few things went his way and Joe got some good game time with BOP. He was even named in the NZ Maori side later that year! Believe it or not after Joes NPC debut he had to wait another 9 years before he eventually got a Super Rugby cap for Moana Pasifika at the age of 36. A crazy story which you'll have to listen to it to comprehend. Theres plenty of good yarns in this episode and the overlying message of perseverance which is inspiring.
