Former New Zealand middle and long-distance runner Rod Dixon was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the New Year 2026 Honours for services to athletics. Dixon is a four-time Olympian, winning the bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He won the New York City Marathon in 1983 making him the only athlete in history to have won the New York Marathon and medalled in the Olympic 1500m. Dixon joined Jason Pine to chat about his introduction into running, the 1972 Munich Olympics, and being recognised in the New Year 2026 Honours. The NZ Breakers are set to honour four-time ANBL champion Tom Abercrombie. They will retire the iconic number 10 singlet Abercrombie famously wore throughout his 429-game career. The Special Olympics National Summer Games have been in full swing this week in Christchurch.  Over 1200 athletes, 500 coaches, and 800 volunteers have descended on the city in one of the biggest sporting events of the year.  CEO Fran Scholey told Piney there’s been a buzz all week.  She says there’s been a lot of support and it’s been a great vibe.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The field for the Women’s ASB classic draw has been confirmed.  Kiwi Lulu Sun is among those playing, along with superstar Venus Williams.  Tournament director Nico Lamperin told Piney they’re extremely happy about the field they’ve managed to put together.   He says the draw is a good reflection of some established players, world famous names, as well as the younger generation.  “Venus is huge,” Lamperin says.  “She’s really the player that everybody wants to see.”  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Head coach Clark Laidlaw anticipates a seamless return to the Hurricanes for Jason Holland.  The 53-year-old, who led the team for four of his eight years with the Canes' prior to his role with the All Blacks, is back as an assistant for the 20-26 Super Rugby Pacific season.  Although it's a demotion since Holland was last with the club, Laidlaw believes pride won't be an issue with him or the other assistant coaches.  He told Piney Holland was excited and passionate about coming in to assist both him and Cooper, another assistant coach, with their roles.  “His passion for making players better and picking apart defences is obvious, so I don’t see any problems or issues with that.”   “We genuinely have loved having him in already this week.”  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

All Blacks winger Sevu Reece is off to France at the end of the next season.   The 28-year-old has signed on for three years with French club Perpignan, leaving the Crusaders after eight seasons with the side.  Reece has played 37 tests for New Zealand and is Super Rugby’s all-time leading try scorer with 66 tries.  He told Piney it makes him so proud and happy knowing that he’s given everything to all of the teams he’s been a part of.   “Hopefully I’ve made some of the fans proud.”  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Zealand have dished out a nine-wicket hiding to the West Indies in the second cricket test in Wellington.  After bowling the tourists out for 128 after lunch on day three, the Black Caps cantered to the meagre target of 56 before tea, walking off on 57 for one.  Jacob Duffy finished with figures of five for 38 —his second five-wicket bag in a three-test career— and six for the match.  Former Black Caps seam bowler and current selector, Gavin Larsen told Piney they always knew there was something special about Duffy.  He says it was just a matter of when the time emerged that he would grab his opportunity, and Duffy’s done that with both hands.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Earlier this week cricket fans were saddened to hear that legendary English batsman Robin Smith had passed away.  Smith played 62 tests between 1988 and 1966, and died in Peth Australia, at the age of 62.  Bryan Young, a former test batting opener for the Black Caps, had formed a friendship with Smith, and joined Piney to pay tribute.   LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The off-field wrangling over whether New Zealand adopts a franchise Twenty20 cricket model continues.  A group of fifteen former internationals signed an open letter raising concerns over the viability of NZ20, a privately backed T20 league.   Richard Petrie was one of these signatories who sees this idea as being detrimental to domestic cricket in New Zealand.    He told Piney they’re not opposed to a T20 competition per se, but rather a private organisation coming in and taking over the January window for profit making reasons.  Petrie says it would put New Zealand cricket in turmoil.   LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wellington Phoenix are looking to make history tonight by winning their first New Zealand derby match over Auckland FC at Mount Smart Stadium.   It's a ground without happy memories for the Phoenix, who suffered a 6-1 thumping to Auckland FC there in the final derby match of the 2025 season.
