Jason Pine: The White Ferns are in a risky position

In trying to improve the consistency of the White Ferns, where should we be focusing our attention? First and foremost, it seems to me that our domestic competition simply doesn't prepare our players for international cricket. There are a couple of sides that dominate domestic women's cricket, but the overall standard of the domestic comp is simply too far below international cricket. Scoring lots of runs and taking lots of wickets domestically isn't a good indicator as to whether a player is ready to contribute consistently at international level, because the gap is currently too big between the two. The best elite sporting structures also create competition for places in the national side. The realisation and crystal-clear knowledge that if you don't perform, there's someone waiting to take your place - and take their chance - simply doesn't exist right now. And that in no way says that players don't care because they know they can't get dropped, but it's a simple fact that competition for places increases performance. Bryan Stronach talked about addressing that - not only the Super Smash and Hallyburton-Johnstone Sheild - but the age-group comps and creating a bigger pool of talent. But the word he used most was time, it takes time. Unfortunately, in the instant gratification and results-driven business of elite sport, you're not always afforded that. The worst thing that can happen here is for apathy to set in, in the White Ferns fan-base, especially its discretionary one. Sports fans who will take interest and invest in a side they see is making progress, and is backed by an organisation with a constant search for improvement - my gut feel is that isn't how NZ sports fans feel about the White Ferns right now. They are very much on the fence about watching them or not. And there's only one thing worse than not performing and not progressing - and that is becoming irrelevant. Jason Pine: A solid start to the All Blacks' new regime

Which players yesterday put the most pressure on for places in the All Blacks side for the Rugby Championship? If we assume the side that played against England was the first-choice 23, who put their hand up highest yesterday for a place in the 23 for the next test against Argentina in Wellington in 3 weeks' time? I think anyone would say Billy Proctor did. He made a really, really good debut at centre, good running lines, nice hands under pressure, albeit against a Fijian side that didn't get up in his face like England did to Jordie Barrett and Rieko Ioane when they were here. One of the qualities of great centres is the ability to set up their outsides, the way Joe Stanley, Frank Bunce and Conrad Smith did. Again, Billy Proctor looks like the type of player who can do that, as well as break the line himself. He's an eyes-up player and a very quick decision-maker -so he's one. I'd say Cortez Ratima is making a pretty good case for inclusion in the 23. It sounds like TJ Perenara will be back for the Rugby Championship and Noah Hotham did well on debut yesterday too. Throw in Finlay Christie and there's a bit of a logjam building at halfback. One thing I'd love to see, maybe on the end of year tour, is the Cam Roigard / Cortez Ratima halfback double punch. But even before Roigard comes back, I think Cortez Ratima is ideally suited right now to the impact role off the All Blacks bench. The scrum was good yesterday, with an almost entirely different pack in action, the lineout was certainly better than the shambles at Eden Park and they conceded just one try against a side renowned for their attacking unpredictability and strike power. So, a lot of boxes were ticked. There is, of course, the caveat of how much we can take from a game against Fiji, who, while they've improved in recent years, didn't look anything like the same side that beat England and Australia last year. But you can only play what's in front of you, and the All Blacks did that. And finally- no cards, red or yellow, in the first three tests under Razor. Compare that to last year, with Sam Cane's red and Shannon Frizell's yellow in the World Cup final, Codie Taylor and Aaron Smith's yellows against Ireland in the quarter-final, Ethan de Groot's red against Namibia in pool play, Will Jordan's yellow against France in the opening game and Sam Cane's yellow and Scott Barrett's red in the warm-up match against South Africa. 5 yellow and three red cards in the last eight test of 2023, none so far this year. That's a sign of pretty good discipline under the new regime. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jason Pine: Top 8 is far from certain now

I saw Chanel Harris-Tavita afterwards and you could tell how devastated he was. Games aren't won or lost on missed kicks, Andrew Webster made that point afterwards. But the fact remains if he'd landed that last conversion from a pretty handy position, the scores would have been level, and this game might have taken a different path. The other kicks he missed were tricky. Kurt Capewell and Mitch Barnett both scoring out wide left, not ideal for a left-footed kicker. The Warriors now have 19 points from 18 games. They're 4 points outside the top 8 now, with 6 games still to play this weekend, so it could be 5 points outside the top six by the end of the weekend, and just seven rounds remaining. We're starting to get into the territory of talking about "mathematical chances" of making the top eight, which is never good. This was a team we were so optimistic about at the start of the season. After last season, and having arguably strengthened the squad, we were talking top four. That's not going to happen now. And top eight is far from certain, but still achievable. Let's look at the remaining games: Tigers at home Eels at home Absolutely must win those two Then, Dolphins away Sea Eagles away Bulldogs at home Sharks away And the bye to finish. Of those last 4 games, all against teams in the top 8 right now, you'd have to think the Warriors would need to win at least 2, and probably 3 of them This is getting really tough now. Jason Pine: Here's how the All Blacks escaped with a victory

A few thoughts on last night's test match- Beauden Barrett was just utterly terrific. That game changed when he came on, he sparked the All Blacks, he got them on the front foot, he set up Mark Telea's second try and pulled off a huge defensive play at the end. I saw a great tweet last night -"Is there a minimum number of minutes someone has to play to get Man of the Match? Asking for a Beauden" Look, Stephen Perofeta's had a good couple of outings, he hasn't done anything wrong, but he's not Beauden Barrett. Beauden will start the Rugby Championship at 15, nothing surer. The conundrum Scott Robertson will now face is what he does when Will Jordan's fit - a nice problem to have. Cortez Ratima had a good debut, he provided zip and zing off the bench. I reckon he's earned the right to start against Fiji next weekend. I also thought Fletcher Newell also made a big difference when he came on. The end to the game was a bit controversial, but correctly officiated. England were mauling from the lineout, the maul was successfully defended. Ollie Lawrence and Jamie George broke off that maul, but Lawrence was in front of George, who had the ball - and was therefore offside as the All Blacks tried to make a tackle He was obstructing the All Blacks. You can't create a new maul with a player in front of the ball carrier, it was the correct call. In any case, Jamie George didn't get the ball down, he was held up by Beauden Barrett What England were saying is that because there was still time to play, it should have been a line dropout, which would have given them the ball back. There are a few issues to address for the All Blacks. The lineout was shambolic in the first half, across the game, they lost 7 of their own throws through steals or pressure, it was a huge work-on for the All Blacks. Yes, Maro Itoje is a formidable opponent at lineout time - and had another brilliant game - but he's just one man in the lineout. The All Blacks can't let themselves become a team that's known for being vulnerable at lineout time. The kicking, in particular the box kicking - I don't mind it as a tactic, it's part of the game but it wasn't done effectively last night. There was often no energy in our chase and the kicks were a bit too long as well which didn't allow them to be contested. Basically, we're just giving the ball back. By contrast, all of England's box kicks were contested. England are a very good rugby team, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Maro Itoje is world class, Marcus Smith could well become that, Steve Borthwick seems like a genuinely good bloke and an excellent coach. And if we're honest with ourselves, England had the chance to win both of these test matches. Instead, the All Blacks escaped - and I think that's the right word - with two victories. Jason Pine: A few questions ahead of tonight's test

A few questions ahead of tonight's second AB's v England test: What would have been the biggest areas of focus for the AB's this week? Three things. One: The collision areas. England trumped us there last week. Two: Finding a way to combat England's rush defence. Cross-kicks are one way, but quicker, slicker ball is another. Three: Lineouts. Not good last week, both with connections and throwing. Codie Taylor and Asafo Aumua have big nights ahead. Will Damian McKenzie change his pre-kick routine after being timed out last weekend? I doubt it. Kickers are metronomic with the way they prepare for kicking. He'll also have a shot-clock on the big screen, which would have been very handy last weekend. How will Cortez Ratima go on debut? Good, I think. He's been a quality Super Rugby halfback for a while now and looks every inch a player who'll go well in black. He'd want to as well, with Noah Hotham also now in the mix and Cam Roigard on the improve, competition for the halfback spots is about to intensify. Will England break the Eden Park fortress? It feels unlikely. Something happens to the All Blacks and visiting teams on that patch of grass, how else can you explain the last 30 years? Only 6 of the current All Blacks 23 were even born when France scored the try from the end of the earth in 1994. It felt like England's chance was last weekend. So, who wins and by how many? All Blacks. And for me, more comfortably than the one-point victory that started Razor's reign in Dunedin. I've got them by 10 this time. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jason Pine: Notes on last night's All Blacks victory

This was a very good test match.I watched the Wallabies play Wales last night when I got back to my room, and the intensity, skill level and ferocity of the contest was nowhere near what we saw in Dunedin.England are a proper rugby side, one that came within a point of reaching the Rugby World Cup final, that beat Ireland in the Six Nations, and that very nearly beat the All Blacks in New Zealand last night for just the third time in their history, and the first time in 21 years. We knew what their strengths were -close, combative, one-off rugby with ball in hand, and a smothering defence designed to deny the All Blacks any space to weave their magic in midfield. That leaves gaps out wide and certainly Sevu Reece’s try came from the tactic designed to combat that, the cross-field kick. But England were also expansive when the occasion presented itself, way more than I expected them to be.I was so impressed with the general play of England first-five Marcus Smith, he’s a true triple-threat with ball in hand - he can kick, pass or run as the fancy takes him.The only blot on his copy book last night was his goal kicking, he left 8 points out there, and in a 1-point game, that is obviously not great. Maro Itoje was also excellent for England, a good try and a constant physicality around the field that caught the eye. Best on park for the All Blacks for me was Patrick Tuipulotu. It’s incredible to think he was in major doubt for this series, but his all-round play, accuracy in his core roles, ball carries, lineout takes and strong tackling was just excellent. The obvious talking point though is Damian McKenzie’s penalty attempt being timed out. The rule is that from the moment you signal your intent to take a kick at goal; you have 60 seconds for the kick to be taken.I think we’re probably all OK with the rule. It's designed to stop time wasting, especially late in the games. But surely there needs to be a shot clock on the big screen, a visual cue for the kicker and for us in the crowd.Every other sport that uses shot clocks of varying degrees- basketball with its 24 seconds to take a shot, tennis for serves, cricket for DRS reviews, anything where there is a time limit for something to happen - has a visual demonstration of that on the big screen at the venue. Why wasn’t there one there last night? There simply must be a visual indicator for the 60 seconds it's an absolute no-brainer. Don’t be surprised to see a shot clock on the screen at Eden Park next weekend. To give Damian McKenzie his due, he didn’t complain afterwards. He owned it, and said he has to make adjustments.I’ve watched it back and timed it, and the referee is bang on with his timing, from the moment he points to the posts to indicate the kick, it’s exactly 60 seconds before he blows again for the timed-out call. It took about 20 seconds to get the tee out, and Damian McKenzie doesn’t have the ball on the tee until 40 seconds. From there, he was also up against the clock, and so it proved.
