S7 Ep 210S7E210: Introducing Myself to Myself with Déjà Louve (Season 7 Finale)

E

"Bringing Queen City [Burlesque Festival] to life had a lot to do with wanting to apply what I had learned from being on the road. I volunteered at the Burlesque Hall of Fame for several years in a row as a tech assistant; I've volunteered at the Vancouver Burlesque Festival a few years in a row as well, and I've performed there; many of my friends are producers. It was really important to me to elevate what I was seeing, or what I wanted to bring to the table, and really offer exponential and incredible, sensational art for not only for [other burlesque performers] but obviously for the theater-goers. I want people to come to a burlesque show and realize this is art, that this is passion and it's an experience; and it's not just being at a bar and everyone being hammered and taking their clothes off; it can be that and that is its own thing, [but] that [theatre] environment is what I thrive on, that is what I love to create, to offer diversity and the talent." Burlesque artist Déjà Louve has been thrilling audiences in British Columbia for more than 9 years. She and Viktor Devonne talk about ancestry, languages, accent marks, and running one's own festival, The Queen City Burlesque Festival. S7 Ep 209S7E209: Attraction Repulsion with Red Rum

E

"When it comes to my work, I'm not going to make stuff that's so esoteric and so personal and emotional that no one can access it; that's not entertainment... I've tried doing pieces where I was very weird and abstract and it's not satisfying. It's very satisfying if you can get somebody hooked in, if you can challenge somebody's thoughts about what what burlesque is; I think that's great. But I really can't get down with 'Well this is my art and these are my feelings and I'm just going to explode all over the stage and you're just going to have to watch'' I just don't think that that's thoughtful. I think you have to be thoughtful about your audience if you're going to go in front of an audience." Red Rum is a shocking talent based in Chicago, known for burlesque recreations of some of horror's greatest hits (Hellraiser! The Thing! Star Wars! They Live! The Dark Crystal!) as well as ooky spooky original creations. This 2023 Siler Tusk Award winner for Monster Smash and Viktor talk taglines, makeup, sacred material, real life villains (her pantheon of Baddies) and what's 'too soon,' getting denied by Uber drivers, audience members doing the sign of the cross, what's actually scary, feeling sexy, and whether we'll ever see her on Dragula. S7 Ep 208S7E208: Creatively Falling Over w/ Ginger Snaps

E

"I love anything glam. I am very much that person who I wants to add glitter and rhinestones to absolutely everything I can. Even in my professional work, any time we're doing a show or they're like 'let's add some glitter' I'm like mu-ha-ha, you asked for it." Ginger Snaps is a glamourous circus person, spinning majestically in Austin, Texas! She and Viktor Devonne discuss America's Got Talent, IVF (content notice; fertility talk), being the inspirational chubby person, dexterity, reproductive rights, hypermobility disorder, and more about the french horn than this podcast usually gets into. S7 Ep 207S7E207: Pin-Up in Motion w/ Mika Romantic

E

"I guess I've always been like a champion for the misfits, those who just don't belong; whatever that is. And I hope that people who see our show will feel that they can do it too, that they can take chances, that they can be naked; they don't have to hate their bodies just because society tells them [to.]... I just want people to smile, to feel good." Mika Romantic from Lehigh Valley, PA shares her story with Viktor, from the beginning of doing glove reveal classes for housewives to now running her own production company. We go in on topics like the Pussycat Dolls, her first act with the New York School of Burlesque which was an ambitious six minutes, awful dressing rooms, Harley Quinns that count, identifying as otaku, the desired MGM spectacular, feeling aged out, everyone fighting with each other, and embracing "the rotting phase." S7 Ep 206S7E206: Decolonizing Burlesque w/ Bella Sin

E

"I just want to hopefully help end erasure in our scene and for everyone to have a moment of self-discovery and self-ideology and a moment of 'let me check myself, let me go ahead and try to go ahead and learn about this' and then spread that knowledge to somebody else." Bella Sin returns to the pod to discuss the project Decolinizing Burlesque, which is being made available for FREE this November, aiding in the amplifciation of BIPOC and queer burlesque performers in history who are often forgotten. Bella Sin is a powerhouse in Cleveland, Ohio as an entertainer, a makeup mogul, festival producer, and educator. They attained The Mentor Award distinction at the Silver Tusk Awards 2023. S7 Ep 205S7E205: The Road to Iconic w/ Desiré D'Amour

E

"I think we're a generation that recognizes that acknowledging and shining a light on people is important--to them, and to us. It makes me feel better when I can shine a light on someone and say 'Look what they did.'" Desiré D'Amour has been stripping since the 90s, and in burlesque for nearly 24 years. Telling tales from the San Francisco strip club to the legendary goat ranch years of Exotic World to the current incarnation of Burlesque Hall of Fame (and its spectacular Weekender), Desiré shares with Viktor thoughts on bridging the gap between historical burlesque and its present incarnation, proper pronouncing and advocating for correcting others, jealousy, diversity versus tokenism, learning from Harvest Moon and the Cantankerous Lollies, that famous backbend, what is and is not and is and is not burlesque (and being open to reconsidering), the evidently contentious response to the royal court of Miss Exotic World 2023, technology affecting burlesque and industry connection, the purpose of Ranch Undressing, and maybe a glimmer of what's to come. S7 Ep 204S7E204: Madame E. Tells ALL (or at least, lots!)

E

"Oh, there was always a fight or two in the dressing room, someone getting her hair pulled. But most of us were fucking each other, so we got along pretty well." Madame E. tells all the best stories from the debauchery and fun (and serious work!) of stripping in Honolulu, Guam, and beyond before the neoburlesque boom of the late 80s and 90s. Recognized rightfully as a burlesque legend, Madame E has returned to the stage in her 70s, soon to feature at Fat-lesque in Seattle come January 2024, and was recently seen at the Burlesque Hall of Fame in June of this year, peeling it off to a medley of Moody Blues and Billy Idol. But his rock chick has soulful roots in the burlesque scene, largely dancing to the blues for the likes of Pee Wee Herman, Rod Stewart, and Bill Cosby! We could only cover so much in this brief storytime but you'll be enchanted by every word, and we'll bring her back soon to tell us even more dish we couldn't cover. But we did manage to include a few tidbits on her peers in the legends circle, from Toni Elling to Bambi Jones to Bic Carroll to Dixie Evans. Viktor Devonne has, since this recording, been adopted as a burlesque child of this firecracker, and he doesn't know how he got so lucky. AND YES, we talk about the sailor party (iykyk and you will). S7 Ep 202S7E202: The Scenic Route with Harlem Nyte

E

"It got me out of a really deep depression spell; I still live with depression. I tell people even when I'm smiling happy, and I have great days, I still live with depression. But I can say for sure that since I've consistently been performing, the days that have been bad have been few and farther between. Burlesque hs really opened that part of my life up for me, in the healing component of things. I didn't realize I needed dance as therapy too. Sitting in an office or on a zoom call twice a week is important, but I wasn't releasing anything out of my physical body. I was talking a lot of the feelings out, but to dance them out is a whole different thing." Dancer, model, and makeup artist Harlem Nyte delights Viktor Devonne while chatting about the road that led to beginning burlesque 2 years ago. Just off the Ohio Burlesque Festival stage, this shaker from Chicago is regularly seen with Body Confidence for Queens. We talk early dance, bodies on stage, being mouthy, and going to where one is celebrated. "Winning is perspective. Marinka is the one that taught me that. What did you win; you won connections. What did you win; you won a standing ovation. What did you win; you won friendships. You won fans. There's so many ways to look at winning, and I'll tell you, I have won in more in more ways than one." Miss Brawling Beauty is a fantastic multitalented force of nature living in Las Vegas. We talk coming from Utah, blue laws (yes, they're still very real!), stripping in the 90s, gaining the title Princess at The Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender, disability advocacy, sideshow arts and clowning in the family, producing the Salty Desert Burlesque Festival, and her close friendship with the burlesque legend Dee Milo. S7 Ep 199S7E199: Out of the Tickle Trunk w/ El Toro

E

"Ultimately, a lot of what I do, a lot of the burlesque and boylesque work that I do is really based around lampooning male archetypes and deconstructing masculinity. So oddly enough, even though I'm non-binary I kind of find the performance style, the focus of it is still kind of pushing towards that. So in that vein, a lot of the things I do are decidedly 'boylesque' in terms of like what the content is deconstructing, and with the tropes I'm using; obviously they blend and meld into each other in many ways." Uruguayan-Torontonian El Toro shares thoughts on their field of burlesque, music, and film. Regularly seen with Boylesque TO, this self-proclaimed Latinx lover charms and delights in conversation with Viktor Devonne that spans exploration on gender and sexuality, stylistic choices, the word 'boylesque,' good lighting, being followed by documentary camera, and the mysterious land of Canada. S7 Ep 198S7E198: No, We're Not Calling this Episode 'Family Affair' w/ Moxie Blue and Pat Smear

E

"When I moved to Seattle, I joined some different dance companies and it was always just too pushy; like, I'm doing this for fun. And that's what I think why, when we joined burlesque-- because it is fun and I can create that story; what does this song mean to me, what is the song telling me, how do I want to express that to others. And I think that's what's so much fun about creating your persona and growing into your persona, is being able to hear a song and say 'Here's what that sounds like to me,' but to somebody else, they would take in a completely different direction." -- Moxie Blue "Sometimes burlesque is covering yourself in fake blood, in my case covering yourself in lipstick. It's not as polished; I definitely feel like when I tell people that I do burlesque they're like. 'ooh Dita Von Teese doo-doo' and I'm like, oh no, it gets very weird on stage. I don't think that I will ever be as polished ask Christina [Aguilera] and I think that's okay. The movie [Burlesque] itself I do; I enjoy it; it's fun, it's silly. I wish there was less of that one random man that Christina lives with and more of Cher." -- Pat Smear Seattle's Moxie Blue and Pat Smear are a delightful pair of wits and and style, both together on stage and in their solo work. Starting in burlesque together, as mother and child, Moxie and Pat are a surprise in their ability to seamlessly work together and explore their disparate individual styles. We talk personas, adjusting mindsets, generational gaps, activism, and how it went performing in front of dad/husband. E

"I'm a very type a person in general; I think it's easier to be the decision-maker... it saves me time to not go back and forth... The job of producer isn't a really sexy, glamorous creative job a lot of the time. The funnest part is the creative part but a lot of it is updating our website, making our ticketing page, making copies of line-up of the show, promoting the show and sending out press releases and trying to get on calendar. That back office stuff is most of the job. To have a successful show, you can't just show up with a great, creative show; you have to show up with an audience." I had never been to a burlesque festival when I helped produce my first one; we'd have these meetings and people were like 'Well, traditionally in different places, blah blah blah--' and I'm like, 'Why, what, how... Can't we just...?'" S7 Ep 190S7E190: All Because of Tacos, Shimmy LaRoux

E

"Sexuality and sensuality isn't always defined by the physical. What people find sexy is you being comfortable in your body and your own spirit, and how you move throughout the world. I don't care if that's you embracing being the hugest nerd on the planet or you being a sexpot, or however that changes in any moment. For me, most recently, I am deeply examining and enjoying the concept of being a joyous person because I've spent a lot of years, not. What does it mean to be someone who is happy, and how can you be sexy and happy at the same time? I'm just really in my body." Shimmy LaRoux is one of the most charming, engaging performers in Chicago. She and Viktor talk about technology, marketing, pinup, the definition of "classic burlesque," 90s fashion, taking compliments, and just coming off the Mover, Shaker, and Innovator showcase during "the messy middle"of burlesque. S7 Ep 189S7E189: 2 To Fly, A Love Story with Ben Franklin and Joshua Dean

E

"If you can find your way outside of the cog of creating theatre, or whatever it is that is the one thing that's all yours; that freedom... ooh, that's a powerful thing and I'm grateful for it." -- Ben Franklin "I don't pass as straight, I never did... I've lost out on work... I went into what made sense to me. I always express my queer identity [on stage]; I think all my acts have very much a queer sensibility, either by the music choice or te costuming or what I'm showing on stage... the movement... I don't think i set out to do it... [It just] naturally evolved with the way I want to share my art with the audience." -- Joshua Dean Happy Pride! We're closing out June with a threesome: Viktor gets to chat with the delightful duo 2 To Fly, Joshua Dean (aka Jojo the Clown) and Ben Franklin-- circus boylesque extravagants who work solo, together and as part of Boys Night (which features regularly Mr Gorgeous, Jason Mejias, and Phil VonAwesome). Ben and Josh also happen to be in fantastical love with teach other, having started in musical theatre together and now can be seen spinning around from the ceiling in jockstraps; or cracking whips and hula-hooping as Jack Skellington. E

"Your audience sees you. I don't care if you're a performer, a producer, a kitten, or a vendor. They are watching you. They determine who to patronize, who to be involved with, who to give their dollars to." Lakota Shekar holds court in Cleveland, OH. Just coming off her visit to the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender, where she was part of the Miss Exotic World judging panel and part of the accessibility crew. We talk about the apparent shock at the winners' circle by some folks, and how she feels about all that, plus how BHOF held space for disabled audience members and perforners. Conversation includes thoughts on production, judging, burly parents and children, cancer, reading the comments, drag, redlining, and that age-old "you're so brave" kudos. "I am at a point where I want to create acts that mean a lot to me... S7 Ep 186S7E186: The Real Red Velvet Burlesque

E

"When I hit 30, I was redfinding dance and refinding home, and finding other areas of my sexuality, and just experimenting in new and fun ways. That was a gateway drug to burlesque, but if I hadn't had those experiences first, it would have been harder to be myself on stage in front of other people, while I was taking my clothes off... I don't think I would have had the joy in it." Red Velvet is a trained dancer who has become a versatile, frequently provocative and disarming. A San Francisco wonder, Red Velvet chats about pets, beginnings, motivation, the film Burlesque and its effect on the scene, creating one's own opportunities, tiny dollhouses, ageism, and problematic elements within the scene. S7 Ep 183S7E183: Introducing Boombox Burlesque feat. Rain Supreme, ILOV GRATE, Miss AuroraBoobRealis & Stella Nova

E

"We want this to be big, we want this to be memorable; we want this to make an impact in the industry, but also in New York. Hip hop was born here, and we want to make sure we're doing this justice." -- Stella Nova "Me and hip hop are the same age. We both just celebrated our milestone 50 years. I literaly grew up with hip hop; that age when you start to music and paying attention to what the cool stuff is, that's when hip hop was really starting to flourish. I remember when Roxanne Shanté did Roxanne's Revenge and when Salt-N-Pepa did The Showstopper... And so I feel like it's just a part of me as anything in life is... Hip hop is like a sibling, almost." -- ILOV GRATE "I rememeber being young and walking with my mother in our neigthborhood [of Hollis] and her pointing out Run D.M.C. to me... and also I remember when I was a little older, we were playing outside and someone came over and said 'LL Cool J is in the church basement around the corner, playing basketball!' My love of hip hop was curated at home." -- Rain Supreme "This is an all BIPOC festival, and understanding that hip is, and was in its origins, a Black and Brown art form that was created in the Bronx in the 70s by Black and Brown folks. And it's got this global understanding now, and people of all different genres, and races, and ethnicities listen to it and appreciate it, and also culturally appropriate it; there's all the gimmick. But, this is a specifically BIPOC festival; we want to showcase that and obviously everyone can come and support and be entertained and be inspired by this festival." -- Miss AuroraBoobRealis Extraordinary New York burlesquers Rain Supreme, Miss AuroraBoobRealis, Stella Nova, and ILOV GRATE are coming together to bring forth a brand new festival celebrating hip hop music. The Boombox Festival starts up with fundraising shows, such as May 20th at Coney Island and culminates in a extravaganza in September; with plans to expand already for 2024. Viktor gets a few behind the scenes moments from the four entertainers both as soloists and collaborators; plus inspired talks on race, class, misogyny, dance, stan wars, and who in current music is carrying the torch for the grandmasters.
