1829 reist der junge Mendelssohn nach Schottland und notiert das Thema für ein Werk, das er erst 13 Jahre später vollendet. Die 3. Sinfonie in a-Moll gilt als sein sinfonisches Hauptwerk und widerlegt eindrucksvoll alle Vorurteile vom "Leichtgewicht" Mendelssohn.
