Ep 223#223 - Braid (25th Anniversary of "Frame & Canvas")
Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it’d be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What’s amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What’s amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They’re back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon’s stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn’t spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. This was an absolute blast to do and put together. Thanks to Polyvinyl, Tito and the dudes for being game to have some fun. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 221#221 - Rich Balling (The Sound of Animals Fighting)
Today on the podcast we welcome Rich Balling from The Sound of Animals Fighting, Hospital Gown, Pyramids, and RX Bandits. Rich and I reconnected recently as we last crossed paths during my days at Equal Vision during The Sound of Animals Fighting release “Lover, the Lord Has Left Us…” back in 2006. Now The Sound of Animals Fighting has a new EP called “APESHIT” out on Born Losers Records. Rich and I discuss his career balancing music, collaboration and his day job. Old shows he saw growing up in LA, plus his amazing knack as a teacher in real life to provide some real knowledge about listening to your heart, your mind, and realities we face as creative people. And yes, we talk emo. It’s a podcast about emo. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 220#220 - Melody Caudill (Career Woman)
Today on the podcast we welcome Melody Caudill. She’s the name behind Career Woman, that’s currently partnering with the fabulous Lauren Records. You may recognize the last name. Melody is the daughter of Jeff Caudill from Gameface and a new band called Low Coast. All that to say, Melody recently released a song called “Patience (I Like You)” that blew me away. Jeff had been sending me her music since she began writing and I was always intrigued with how a rock star’s daughter could go down the same path when most often times they rebel and do something opposite. I threw out the idea to chat with them together. Melody and I kicked Jeff out after about 20 minutes or so and got talk directly about her musical journey, writing process, her wants and dreams. For those listening, Melody is a freshman in college and way the hell ahead of how I was at her age and it was an absolute joy to hear her perspective on things in life and music. She even played Gilman Street in SF recently. Can’t get any cooler than that. To learn more about Melody’s music search out Career Woman on all the socials or through Lauren Records. Ep 219#219 - M.C. Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger, Ex-Ignota)
Today on the podcast, we welcome M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger and Ex-Ignota. They may have never crossed your path. That’s ok. Upon further inspection, a singer songwriter signed to Merge may bring more questions than answers. We met through a post I made on Instagram. I went, why does that name seem familiar. I reached out and after recognizing the name of his old band on Ebullition called Ex-Ignota, which were a hardcore band from the 90s in Goleta/Santa Barbara area. Fittingly, I took a drive up recently to see him perform in Santa Barbara and speak in person for the podcast. MC was insanely generous with his time and even shouted out the podcast to the crowd during the show. You’ll hear about how M.C. had house shows that would make anyone yearn for a time machine and a love for the early days of emo that was super deep and I learned a ton from him about his position in the scene and where he is today and how it shaped him. His past may be in hardcore and emo with his pedal full on a now full time career as a musician as Hiss Golden Messenger, which we talk about at length. You can hear it in his songs, there’s a little hardcore in em and after this episode it’ll be even more clear. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 218#218 - Vanessa Downing (Samuel S.C.)
Today on the podcast we welcome Vanessa Downing from Samuel or as they known now as Samuel SC. SC is for State College in Pennsylvania where they got together. Samuel was around for 2 years from 1993-1995 and released a split 7” with Texas is the Reason and releases with Art Monk and others. They’re this great moment in that era after the alternative boom and hardcore/emo intermixed. What’s amazing is the band members reconnected further during the pandemic and are back with a new album, touring upcoming and a realization that people cared about their old band. Vanessa and I speak about her life and music endeavors that still burn bright today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 217#217 - David Knudson (Botch, Minus the Bear)
Today on the podcast we welcome David Knudson from Botch and Minus the Bear. I was so excited that David said yes to the podcast and we spoke recently after the first set of Botch reunion shows. We talk about being creative, Seattle in the 90s outside of grunge, and his battle with making better choices in life. Including a deep conversation on how alcohol can catch up with you and the lessons he learned from rehab but also his family. This new Botch tour and music wouldn’t have happened without love from his family and friends to see this other side. We’re the lucky recipients of that but now knowing the struggle and the strength David had during that time was truly inspirational. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 216#216 - Jake Brennan (Disgraceland, Cast Iron Hike)
Today on the podcast we welcome Jake Brennan. I’ve wanted Jake on the podcast for years! You may know him from his podcast Disgraceland or as a member of the band Cast Iron Hike. He also started Double Elvis, a podcast network that I’m a part of. So full disclosure, we’re partners but that being said, I’ve probably had Jake on my wishlist since I started the podcast. We get into a lot about intention and what drives creators like Jake and others. He is in such a great place doing something he loves and it came out of intent. We discuss Fugazi, storytelling, origins of why he tells the stories he does and what his favorite sport is. A truly great conversation with Jake on being a creator and you know it, we talked about when he heard the word emo and his thoughts around it. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 215#215 - Daniel Littleton (The Hated)
Today on the podcast we welcome Daniel Littleton from The Hated. Daniel has a whole other band called Ida and that’s a whole separate episode. Today, we just stick to The Hated, which has had their catalog meticulously handled by our friends at Numero Group and recently played some reunion shows. The Hated were an early emo band. Daniel goes to great lengths to explain his fascination and frustration with the word but in the end he weaves a tale that talks about his upbringing in a biracial family that shaped his life and also seeing bands like Bad Brains or women in music helped guide where he is today. A true legend and I invite you to sit back and listen, which I do for most of this, on a time and place before the word was even uttered. This one is an absolute trip to listen back to and I hope you enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 214#214 - Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It., Storm Chasers LTD)
Today on the podcast we welcome back for the 3rd time, Evan Weiss. Evan and I have spoken two other times, episode 23 (2013) and episode 66 (2016). Today we talk about his new projects, his favorite emo albums of all time, and we look back at the emo revival era with a critical eye. We only had an hour with this busy man, so strap in for a quick one. I’m sure he’ll be back sooner than later. https://www.intoitoverit.com/ https://www.patreon.com/stormchasersltd Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 213#213 - Ken Shipley (Numero Group, Tree Records)
Today on the podcast we welcome Ken Shipley from Numero Group and Tree Records. Many may know Numero Group for their fantastic reissues and they have a show coming up this weekend in LA celebrating 20 years called Numero 20. A very special show with bands we’ve featured on the podcast the last few weeks and more to come. What we’re going to touch on more for this episode is how he got to Numero and his first experiences figuring out the world of record making under the name Tree Records. A fantastic run of releases highlighted by a series called Post Marked Stamps that put many bands we love in the emo genre on the map. A true honor to spend an hour with a person that I look up to professionally. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 212#212 - Ted Leo (Chisel)
Today we welcome Ted Leo from Chisel. You may know Ted Leo or Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Or you’re wondering what Ted is doing on the podcast. We’re deep in our Numero Group 20 Celebration and if you heard the last episode with John Dugan of Chisel, Ted has a great history in hardcore in the NYC area going to shows at ABC No Rio among others and we talk about those days, his thoughts on emo from DC, the early 2000s scene and how special this upcoming "Set You Free" reissue and shows with Numero Group means to him. Ted was an absolute blast to chat with and you’ll wonder where the time went as he weaves stories and moments together that at one point says he’s never said in any other interview. A true honor to have a DIY legend on the podcast and couldn’t have been happier to have it line up with Numero Group’s reissue of “Set You Free” and their upcoming shows. Ep 211#211 - John Dugan (Chisel)
Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they’re about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn’t realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John’s younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I’ve spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I’d see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. We even talk Fall Out Boy and the renewed interest in Chisel. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 210#210 - Chris Sheppard (Everyone Asked About You)
Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you’re not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas. Chris and I talk a lot about where he’s from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they’re playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss. I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in the day. Girl and guy vocals, super dissonant and great peaks and valleys. Heaven. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 209#209 - Erik Fisher (The Hated)
Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Go search it out. Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven’t had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on emo, his band, and music and philosophy. My favorite part is when Erik talks about seeing Rites of Spring for the first time. Holy shit, fucking epic. I can’t wait for you to listen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 208#208 - Justin Pearson (Three One G, Swing Kids, The Locust)
Today we welcome Justin Pearson. If that name is unfamiliar, head to Three One G dot com right now. Justin was and is a musical force. He’s been in a lot of projects over the years and worth diving into his work now with Dead Cross, Deaf Club or where I found out about him when I was younger with Swing Kids and then The Locust. Justin was a little older than me and hearing about his history with punk, hardcore, and the word emo was again eye opening for me as someone that only knows so much. Justin was honest and open about how he felt about the scene and is an inspiration for myself and hopefully you after listening to this interview. Again, search out Three One G, we’ll have links on Washed Up Emo dot com and dive into him if you’ve never heard about him or ride alongside with the emo nerd and get schooled from a legend. Ep 207#207 - Tim Kasher (Track by Track of Cursive's "Domestica")
Today we welcome Tim Kasher, again! He’s been on prior as a guest talking about his entire career and also was included in volume 2 of the Anthology of Emo book series, now we dive even deeper. This time we dive into the absolute classic “Domestica.” Released in June way back in 2000, this album released posthumously, really was an evolution of their last two records and started to almost restart the band out of chaos and unrest. The album, rumored to be about a divorce, as you will hear, is close but also far away as well. Tim was generous was his time to dive really deep into the album, cover, and every single track. Including some about Braces, a short lived band that was a 3 piece that you’ll hear on the reissue. Enough of me talking, this album is a shade over 30 minutes but we’ll spend the next hour to let Tim tell us all about “Domestica.” I hope you enjoy. Reissue is available via 15 Passenger. Ep 206#206 - Eva Alexiou-Reo (FATA Booking Agency)
Today we welcome Eva Alexiou-Reo, many of us know as Eva Fata. Think about it, you’re 18, living in Pennsylvania and some of the first bands you start booking are Hot Water Music, Elliott, and Jimmy Eat World. How’s that for a start? FATA Booking Company turned 25 in 2021 and still going strong today. Eva came up around a similar time and saw the emo boom first hand with booking and managing bands. Eva is someone I’ve wanted to have on for a long time and I’m so happy we had a chance to talk. You may even start your own business after this one, she’s that inspiring. Ep 205#205 - Kip Uhlhorn (The Red Scare, Panthers, Cloudland Canyon)
Today on the podcast, we welcome Kip Uhlhorn from The Red Scare, Panthers and Cloudland Canyon. We speak about emo and hardcore from the late 90s and the many ways that I can sneak in another band that was screamo during that era. Kip has a long history of being in the industry across scoring and bands from the 90s through today. I encourage you to search out and find his music and head over to KipUhlhorn.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 204#204 - Sonny Kay (Angel Hair, The VSS, GSL)
Today on the podcast we welcome an absolute legend. Sonny Kay. You may know Sonny from Angel Hair which put out records on Gravity Records or his own label Gold Standard Laboratories or maybe The VSS. If not, that is totally fine. You’ll learn about them all and other projects he was a part of over the next hour or so. Sonny is a pillar in the early days of emo/screamo/hardcore that shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s someone that even if you haven’t heard his bands, you’ve seen his work as an artist for The Mars Volta and many others. I can’t stress enough how much I implore you to search Sonny out, his music, his art and projects. Learn more about Sonny at SonnyKay dot com. Sit back and listen to one of the original legends. It’s an absolute honor to have him on the podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 203#203 - Cam DiNunzio (Lazycain, Denali)
Today we welcome Cam DiNunzio from Lazycain and Denali. Today, he makes his wares as a composer and music supervisor. We spoke about his early days in Virginia Beach, moving to Richmond, and his thoughts on music as he navigated and survived the emo label. Cam’s contribution to music, this genre, and further throughout the musical landscape is a reason for you to stick around if you haven’t heard of the bands or his name. If you have, you’re in for a treat. We dive into the Lazycain and Denali days. At the start as context, I mention Cam’s bandmate John, who we worked together when I first moved to NYC back in 2000. With that said, as comforting as when a 718 area code calls a 917, listening back this felt more like a conversation, not an interview. I hope you enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 202#202 - Josh English (Six Going On Seven)
Today we welcome Josh English from the band Six going On Seven. Josh was raised in Portland Oregon, seasoned in Boston and an influence on many bands you love today. He should be on the tip of your tongue in this scene. Maybe after this interview the band and Josh will be. Their influence personally has stayed with me for years from their days on Some Records in the late 90s to "American’t (or Won’t)" on Big Wheel Recreation released back in 2001. The band shortly broke up and their CDs and 7”s I had have been staring back at me since. I honestly always had Josh on a list to interview and as this podcast creeps past its 200th episode and 10th year, it was an honor to speak to Josh about his life and what’s he got up next in his career. Ep 201#201 - Ryan Shelkett (Cross My Heart, Liars Academy)
Today we welcome Ryan Shelkett from Blank, Cross My Heart, Dead Red Sea, and Liars Academy. If you haven’t heard any of those aforementioned bands, get on that and you’ll see why Ryan is right at home here on Washed Up Emo. His time in punk, years at Deep Elm Records, and the time I spent working Liars Academy is discussed at length. Ryan’s honest reflections on his time in music both good and bad showcase how this little genre pokes its head out even after you left it in the drawer for years and years. I’ve honestly wanted Ryan on since the day I started this podcast so on the even of 10 years of this podcast, no better friend could be had and I think you’ll agree. Ep 200#200 - Adam Lazzara (Taking Back Sunday)
Today we welcome a very special guest and friend, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday. It’s fitting he’s number 200. I met him early on in my days at college when I’d see him at shows all the time. He was in high school at the time and it was something where no matter the show, Adam was there. During the podcast, we catch up on live and I bring up one of the worst shows he’s ever played at a band that coincidentally led to him moving up to Long Island. As someone who was a fan of him before the band, it was this magical thing. Someone from around here in North Carolina is going to live in NYC? Wow! As the years past and releases, we’d spare a minute or a quick hello as life runs by. It’s fitting for 200 because we’re coming up on 10 years of the podcast and 14 years of washed up emo. You tend to look back and remember who was there next to you at the beginning. Adam was that person. It feels good to know Adam is a part of this series and like emo, no matter if you showed up today or 20 years ago, it’s all here waiting for you. Ep 199#199 - Jonathan Fuller (Denali, Engine Down, Sleepytime Trio)
Today on the podcast, we welcome Jonathan Fuller. You may know him from such bands as Sleepytime Trio, Bats and Mice, Denali, and my personal favorite Engine Down. We talk about his bands, career, and what he’s doing now writing music for some of your favorite commercials. Special shout out to Dave from Lapeche for hooking Jonathan and I up. Ep 198#198 - Walter Schreifels
Today on the podcast, we welcome Walter Schreifels. Walter has been in some of the most influential hardcore bands including Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Quicksand, Rival Schools and his label he ran, Some Records. We also touch on emo, post-hardcore and his life today. Walter couldn’t have been nicer during this interview. He’s still huge in the scene and continues to make music for the masses. Life pro tip. Enjoy the legends today. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 197#197 - Michael Malarkey (Actor, Musician)
Today on the podcast, we welcome actor and musician Michael Malarkey. You may know Michael from his acting roles in the Vampire Diaries to Project Blue Book. His most recent album “Graveracer” was released in early 2020. Michael is a huge fan of emo, punk, hardcore, and screamo. My favorite quote was fitting to many that have a love of something not their job and hope they can do one to help the other. He said, “I’m a musician with an acting problem.” Both are great and it was an honor to have Michael be a part of this podcast. If you’re a fan of him or not, or know too much or not enough, you’ll enjoy this episode. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 196#196 - Mike Kinsella
An absolute honor to have Mike on again to chat about what he's up to right now. He's been on so many times, we get right to the life updates and he gives me shit about my sports teams. Plus, we went track by track through his latest Owen record "The Avalanche." Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 195#195 - Jim Ward (At the Drive-In, Sparta, Sleepercar)
Today we welcome musician Jim Ward. You may know him from At the Drive-In, Sparta, or Sleepercar. He has a new solo record called “Daggers” out June 11th. If you’re listening to this in the future, I’m sure it’s on whatever streaming service or implant we all have to enjoy our favorite tunes. Jim was an absolute blast to talk to and someone I’ve been wanting on the podcast since I started this back in 2011. We spoke a lot about his life weaving in music, touring, and what he’s learned over the years. Jim pulled zero punches and was hopeful in his words that resonated deeply with me listening back. If you’re a fan of him or not, you’ll dig this chat. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 194#194 - Johnathon Ford (Unwed Sailor, Roadside Monument)
Today, we welcome Johnathon Ford from Unwed Sailor and Roadside Monument. Johnathon and I have been trying to make this happen for years as we’d connect via mutual friends or at a show. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. If you’ve never heard of either band, they are bedrocks for this scene and worth your time to dive into. If you have and looking to hear Johnathon speak at length about his life, you’re going to love this too. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Ep 193#193 - Brian Fallon
Today we welcome singer/songwriter Brian Fallon. You may also know him from The Gaslight Anthem or The Horrible Crowes and many other bands. Brian and I caught up to chat about finding music, his love of emo and influences that many may not realize. From The Gloria Record, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, I Hate Myself… these all shaped his writing from his time in a band and solo career. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Brian about his life in music so far and there’s plenty more ahead that will always include some influences from our scene both old and new. Ep 192#192 - Brian Sokel (Franklin, AM/FM)
Today we welcome Brian Sokel from Franklin and AM/FM. Franklin were a Philly area band from 1992-2000 that had releases and played with many of your favorite bands during that time. Brian was the guitarist of Franklin and put out a bunch of great music that runs the gamut from post to dub to low-fi indie. With releases on Tree, Workshop, File 13, etc and then with Polyvinyl, for his days with the project AM/FM, Brian has spent time putting together photos and audio online for whoever may stumble upon this. It’s how we met today. We also get to spend time talking about his neighbor Atom from Atom and his Package fame. Let’s hear it for “E is for Enya.” Here’s how to learn more. Check out the website GoKidGo.org and GoKidgo.Bandcamp.com. That’s the way to check out all the music and find more stories about this era and scene around Philly. Ep 191#191 - Mario Rubalcaba (Clikatat Ikatowi, Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt)
Today, we welcome Mario Rubalcaba from Clikatat Ikatowi! Mario has been in many bands from Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, and Off!. As with the podcast, we spoke a lot about his time skating, the formation of Clikatat Ikatowi and the surrounding scene of San Diego that shaped him. A lot of great stories from Mario about his time in music. An absolute legendary drummer and so happy he took some time to chat about his time in music with me. Ep 190#190 - Sara Lund (Unwound)
Today, we welcome Sara Lund from Unwound. Unwound were around from 1991 to 2002 and Sara joined soon after they started in 1992. Their influences on music and culture run vast from Botch, Garden Variety, Blonde Redhead, Modest Mouse, Pg. 99, and many more. In 2013, The Numero Group released the band’s entire studio output, so it’s out there for you to dive into. Jason Heller from the AV Club and past guest on the podcast was quoted saying “Unwound was the best band of the 90s.” Quite the compliment. Sara has been in many bands since and well worth your time to dig those out. She’s also a drum teacher which you can book an online drum lesson if you want. Ep 189#189 - Brianna Collins (Tigers Jaw)
Today we welcome Brianna Collins from Tigers Jaw. The band just released a new album on Hopeless Records called "I Won’t Care How You Remember Me" and it is fantastic. I had Ben from the band on allll the way for episode 77 so it was time for another episode and why not time it around the new album. Brianna and I talk about the band’s evolution, the new record, and her thoughts on the scene from the revival up to today. It was an absolute honor to have time with Brianna to hear her perspective on the scene and music. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 188#188 - Ryan Ferguson (No Knife)
Today, we welcome guitarist and singer from Ryan Ferguson from the band No Knife. I had Mitch Wilson (the other half of the guitar vocals of No Knife) on episode 153 and today, we welcome in Ryan. We talk a lot about his music both solo and No Knife, the scene, and I sorta didn’t realize but I read a super low Pitchfork review of one of his solo albums that Ryan never knew they reviewed or read it. So I read the review and you’ll hear how that turned out. If you haven’t heard No Knife or Ryan’s solo stuff, give it a try. An absolute unique sound and their records never sound old to me whenever they come on… No Knife were one of the best bands ever to come out of San Diego and I’m so happy Ryan spent some time to chat about it EDIT: 3/1/21: Not Ken Griffey, Jr. it was Barry Larkin. Ken Griffey Jr. played for the Mariner’s farm system which was a few years later. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. If you’re not familiar with the band, they’re from Detroit, Michigan and released a record called “Melee” last year on Triple Crown. One of the best new bands out there right now, Dogleg and Alex’s words are worthy of your time. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 184#184 - Zach Lind (Track by Track of Jimmy Eat World's "Futures")
Today we have a special episode with Zach Lind from Jimmy Eat World. He and I spoke recently talking about each song off of their 2004 release "Futures" for WUER, Washed Up Emo Radio that’s on Spotify right now. During the track by track we got into more about the band’s relationship with the fans now during this epidemic and what it’s been like re-learning and playing songs from past albums. I realized I had a ton from the cutting room floor that was worth for ya'll to hear in full. So this episode was quite fun to put together and hope you dig it. Ep 182#182 - Steven's Untitled Rock Show (Steven Smith, Jonah Bayer)
Today’s guests Steven Smith and Jonah Bayer you may know if you owned a television and loved music in the mid 2000s. Around that time, there was one TV show dedicated to the scene so to speak and championed many bands you know and love today. The show was Steven’s Untitled Rock Show on Fuse TV. A show I had the pleasure of working with during my day job at Equal Vision Records. To have their videos played and even interviewed was a huge deal at the time. Host Steven Smith and one of the writers for the show, Jonah Bayer are amazing in their candor about the time and place of the rock show and what is keeping that spirit alive today. A true time in a bottle experience for those that were there and worth taking a dive into again. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 180#180 - Mike Reed (Small Brown Bike)
Like two friends who haven’t spoken in a bit. Mike and I start talking about a show i saw of theirs at the beginning of the pod. Mike was absolutely a joy to speak with albeit with some audio issues thanks to cell phones and not being able to do this in person. Also you may hear some beeps, not sure if the NSA was listening but if they are, I hope they enjoyed the trip down memory lane with Mike about the band, his life and what music has meant to him. I also seem to have had a crazy cold but still did this interview so I sound a little stuffed up. Also, it’s worth noting, please check out Travis Dopp’s GoFundMe for his fight against cancer. Ep 179#179 - Mike Parsell (Frail)
Today, we have someone on the podcast that changed my life. Mike Parsell, guitarist from the band Frail. Frail were from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and when they played a local teen center near me in high school, I was absolutely hooked. Only around from 1993-1996, they influenced countless bands we love today when the worlds of emo and hardcore collided without dollar signs. Mike was very nice at the beginning of this podcast, letting me nerd out a bit about the first time I saw them and was very open about the band, his thoughts now about the music, and what it means to him. Ep 178#178 - Tonie Joy (Moss Icon)
Today we welcome Tonie Joy from Moss Icon. Moss Icon were around for only four years but impacted two genres and countless bands after their short time together. They are an icon in this scene and it was absolutely fascinating to hear Tonie’s perspective on DIY and the music scene from his vantage point of being in this band from 1987-1991. We talk about how he met Jonathan Vance, finding punk and hardcore in the suburbs of DC, and the first time he heard the word emo. We also go deep into his relationship with the word and what he thinks now. Tonie was honest and someone I wish I could listen to for hours. Lucky for us, we got an hour and a half of a legend speaking about a time and place where many of the bands we love today bore some lineage to the bands Tonie was in. If you have no idea who these guys are, take a listen online. If you do know, you’re going to hear some stories told only on this podcast. Ep 177#177 - Conor Oberst
Today, we welcome a legend, Conor Mullen Oberst to the podcast. No, I didn’t just add my last name to his name, that’s his actual middle name and we talk about it and no, we discussed it. We are not related. Mr Oberst was very gracious with his time while having some work done on his house, which you’ll hear at times during the podcast. It was an honor to discuss such life changing events as seeing Fugazi when he was 11 and the first time he heard the word emo at 16. We also chat about his feelings on the word emo and his association with it when his sound was traveling the opposite way. What I loved most about this interview was Conor’s openness. He was willing to discuss at length his history and what he’s trying to pass on as not just as a musician but as a human. We then spent time on Bright Eye’s legacy as the band turns 25 this year and what he thinks about himself and what the future holds. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Ep 176#176 - Gared O'Donnell (Planes Mistaken for Stars)
Today on the podcast is Gared O’Donnell from Planes Mistaken for Stars. Gared and I recently connected after he heard an earlier podcast, episode 110 to be exact, with writer Jason Heller about the impact of Planes Mistaken for Stars and the untimely death of band member Matt Bellinger. Gared hadn’t heard this episode until recently and reached out to me after he listened. We ended up talking a bit and he agreed to come on the podcast. This episode now takes on a little extra weight. The interview, done in May of this year was before Gared was diagnosed in late August with stage 3 Esophagus cancer. As a favor, it’d be great while you’re listening to Gared’s interview to check out the link to his GoFundMe on Washed Up Emo. They’re still researching the best options for care but any words of support or some donation will go a long way for a legend. If you don’t know much about Planes Mistaken for Stars or a super fan, this episode is for you. Gared pulls no punches talking the band’s association with emo saying, “I think we wanted to lean into the dark side of things because it made more sense to us.” On their rowdy days, he admits. “It was a circus act, it wasn’t a magic show.” He talks fondly on his time with bandmate Matt saying, “Matt walks on stage with me, every time I do.” Lastly, he’s one of the most aware of his faults and dreams I’ve ever interviewed saying, “Sometimes life is just crushing, just to walk outside the door… if one our tunes can get you to roll up your sleeves and brave through it, then that’s all I want. Then stating eloquently “I’m hoping that on my deathbed, I’ll just remember that, I did it my way.” Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 175#175 - Thomas Barnett (Strike Anywhere, Inquisition)
Today on the podcast we welcome Thomas Barnett from Strike Anywhere. A legend in the punk scene and someone that I’ve been following since 1999 when I first heard Strike Anywhere and their brand of political punk from Richmond, VA. When Thomas from Strike Anywhere first jumped on the phone with me said he was shy and not really a good talker. Well, he was completely wrong and I just sat back for most of this interview and listened to the master who has been going to shows since the 80s. he talked about learning how to put on shows at a barn on the outskirts of Richmond Virginia, and spoke passionately about what first bands he saw that shaped his life and his previous band Inquisition. I did a lot of editing myself out, yes, even the giggles. It was funny thought listening back to this interview and going, “yea don’t need to hear me talk there.” I was absolutely honored to have someone like Thomas take time to chat about the history of the “scene” in quotes and what shapes the scene and yourself. We of course talk about emo, don’t worry, but as you know, my love of hardcore runs deep so to hear him talk about the Richmond, Virginia scene, his life now and the band Strike Anywhere is still around! Their most recent album is out on Pure Noise Records now called “Nightmares of the West.” Definitely go check that out and as we all know and you’ve heard me preach, emo has many tentacles and a long history. A big part of the history that isn’t talked about enough is hardcore and punk. Hardcore intersects with emo so much that having Thomas on to school me on the history was amazing to experience. Ep 174#174 - Jon Marburger (I Hate Myself)
Today we welcome Jon Marburger from I Hate Myself. I Hate Myself were a three piece emo band from Gainesville, Florida and were around for only a short time from 1997-1998 and then reunited in 2003 and 2005. Not the longest career but to me, a cornerstone and trailblazer for the music we all love that followed. If you have any interest in the history of this genre and I Hate Myself hasn’t come into your life yet, I ask you to stick around and hear Jon’s words. We talk about his thoughts on his history in the scene, I Hate Myself, emo, the music Jon created after I Hate Myself, and we nerd out about Coheed and Cambria.
