Routines and habits are one of the things I resisted in my life for way too long and I am almost embarrassed by how long it took me to figure out that routines are the things that make life easier - not harder or boring. However, routines can be tricky to set up and we don't always get it right the first time. But, once you find the right routines for you and your family…they are so worth it! My expert guest is Ashley Brown. In addition to being a mom of two, she is the author of the Routine Building Handbook and owner of Routine and Things, which serves to help women get organized and into routine so they enjoy the heck out of life. Ashley knows when women feel good, the world is better for it. She’s on a mission to see as many women as possible organize their life one routine at a time! This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How many routines Ashley has in her life (and how many she recommends) What to do when a routine fails Why routines are the safeguard against boredom The steps you can take to start a new routine What to do if you feel too stressed to try a new routine ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? No worries. I’ve got your back. Decluttering doesn’t have to mean dumping everything out and sorting through it one thing at a time. Instead of feeling like you have to do it all at once, you can be methodical and create a rhythm for going through the things you own. Honestly, no one really wants to look through their old items and feel guilty about tossing stuff. Even as a minimalist, decluttering is a means to an end for me. I love the feeling of a neat tidy space, but sorting, purging, and tossing is tiring. Here’s what I do instead of decluttering to keep my home clean and clutter free. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: 3 systems I use to keep clutter under control How you can stop clutter before it enters your home What I recommend you have in every major area of your home My favorite way to get my family to help tidy and clean up How 5 minutes can make or break your next day ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Ep 102Ep 102: How Do You Define Clutter?

Links mentioned in this episode (some may be affiliate links): Get more show notes and additional free resources at wannabeclutterfree.com/102 Discover my favorite resources here Tidy Home Academy - Empowering you to declutter and organize so you can have the tidy, happy home you crave. Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** What is clutter? It seems like a simple question, but it’s a question I hear often which means that it’s not as straight forward as it seems. Sometimes people really don't know what stuff to classify as clutter. They think that anything that’s above the basic necessities is considered clutter (and that might be true if you are a hard-core minimalist, which I am not). Other times, someone might be looking for an excuse to keep something or a reason to get rid of something. When you are in this state of being unsure about clutter, a definition or a rule can help you make that decision and feel good about it. So it's no wonder that this question and the desire for a definition on clutter keeps coming up. If you’ve ever wondered what clutter really is or if you can have stuff as a minimalist, this episode will help you figure it out. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The factual definition of clutter and why it’s not enough Why physical clutter is not the only issue What you can do to look at your clutter differently How I categorize clutter so it’s easier to tackle The first step I take to minimize my clutter that works wonders ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** Did you know that being curious can be one of the best ways to open your life to possibilities you never dreamed possible? Asking the right questions may help you finally let go of the clutter in your home that you’ve struggled with. Or it might be how you decide what’s really important to hold on to - even though other people might think it’s crazy. The problem is that a lot of us have been conditioned to avoid being curious. Perhaps you grew up hearing the old wive’s tale that curiosity killed the cat and it stunted your desire to dig in and ask questions. Or maybe someone told you that questioning things makes you appear unsure or weak. This week’s guest on the Wannabe Minimalist Show will help you overcome those negative, limiting beliefs. By the end of this episode you will see how curiosity can be the gentle nudge to get your life moving in the right direction. Emma Krebs is an innately curious person. Her passion for connecting with others on a deeper level was the catalyst for the creation of her own podcast, The Curious One. Since starting her podcast she's been able to make pivots within her career to help other creators in the social media and podcasting space share their stories. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What it actually means to be curious How you can use curiosity to change your life A reversal that can make decluttering easier Tips for dealing with sentimental clutter and what didn't work for Emma Why Emma doesn’t call herself a minimalist anymore ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Honestly, most people don’t give much consideration to the plastics they use to store leftovers or the lotion they lather on a couple times a day, but they can make a big impact on your life, especially when it comes to getting pregnant. This was the ah-ha moment my guest on the Wannabe Minimalist Show had as she suffered her 4th late-stage miscarriage. When her doctors couldn't tell her the cause, she took it upon herself to dig into the products we all use everyday. What she discovered is pretty shocking, upsetting, and unbelievable. Do you wish your kid’s room could be organized and tidy? You’re not alone! I get asked all the time about how to declutter and organize kid’s stuff. It seems like the smallest among us have the most stuff or at least it’s the most in your face (and everywhere in your home). No matter if you have one child or five, the fact is kids typically come with a lot of stuff. It is so easy to accumulate toys, little clothes, books, games. Kids grow fast and each stage comes with new belongings. If your children have never been given boundaries around their stuff, it’s going to be really difficult to go from a whole house stuffed to the rafters with toys, gadgets, gizmos, and squishies to those sparse instagram images you covet. The good news is, you can get there, it’s just not happening overnight and that's okay. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show lays out the 7 things you can do to corral the toys and mountains of kids things and set up systems so your kiddos can help you keep it up. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why tiny humans come with so much stuff Why starting with a plan is so important and how to make it work for your space How to approach decluttering with your kids interests in mind The #1 secret to creating a toy rotation and why it works How to set boundaries so your kids stuff stays in it’s place ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Some days I feel like I nailed it and other days feel like a failure. However, my journey toward minimalism has had some wonderful overlap when it comes to the rest of my life - outside of the stuff in my home. It has helped me become more intentional and that includes how I spend my time and the relationships I have. Of course the most important relationships in my life are those with my partner and that with my daughter. Since, there is always much to learn in this life, I brought in an expert when it comes to the parent/child relationships we have. Dr. Sarah Bren is a licensed clinical psychologist and mom of two, whose passion is helping parents find their inner confidence and raise healthy, resilient kids. She is the host of the podcast Securely Attached, and the creator of the website drsarahbren.com where she offers resources such as guides, workshops, and digital courses. She is the co-founder and clinical director of Upshur Bren Psychology Group in Pelham, NY where she treats parents, children and families. Sarah has such a calming presence and you call tell she practices what she preaches. It was a fun conversation and I learned more about attachment parenting, gained confidence in some of the techniques I have been using in my own life, and found encouragement for the developmental stages that are awaiting me as my daughter grows up and matures. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How we can simplify parenting Tips for not losing ourselves in our roles as “mom” What co-regulation means and why it’s so important The truth behind tantrums How to shift focus as your children get older ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? That was me this week. Life was busy because we had just gotten back from our spring break vacation and my calendar was full of things to clean up from before we left and to make up for being off for the week. You know how that goes. But then, my daughter woke up sick. And with the last 2 years dedicated to the pandemic (and thankfully avoiding illness) we were totally out of practice with what to do. To say that it completely took over my day would be a good way to put it. There was a problem though - I did have a couple non-negotiable things that had to happen. Instead of letting the complete change of my day ruin everything I worked through it and it ended up being not only a productive day, but a good one too. I recently spoke about the best ways to organize your days and I think the universe was giving me this opportunity to put that advice into practice. It worked and I also uncovered a few more lessons for how to actually keep my cool in the midst of a crazy day. That’s what I want to share with you. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: My 5 step plan for getting my day back on track What I say to myself to keep a clear head The biggest aha moment I had with the concept of time How I plan for the unexpected The #1 thing I recommend you do before tackling a bad day ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Or worse, does it seem like no matter what you try it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the problem so you’re not sure it even matters? Those are the questions and issues my guest on this episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show found himself pondering as he looked at the different ways he could try to help the environment while downsizing to a tiny home. What started off as a project to build his own custom tiny home, turned into a new-found mission of trying to figure out how to have a bigger impact on the world around him. Michael Bartz is the producer and host of the In Over My Head Podcast that follows his journey to lower his environmental footprint by building a 175 square foot off-grid Tiny Home. He felt overwhelmed by trying to "save the planet" and wasn't sure if all his downsizing and minimizing was really making a difference so he decided to bring in the experts. Michael and his partner Sara live in their Tiny Home on a farm in southern Alberta, and when he’s not podcasting, he can be found pursuing his creative endeavors of acting and writing, or being active and hiking in the Rockies. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Michael and he opened my eyes to some really interesting ideas when it comes to how we can actually make a difference when it comes to the environment. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What it took for Michael to downsize from a traditional house to a tiny home The catalyst that pushed him to build his own tiny home The 2 surprising things Michael thinks we should all do if we want to help the environment What he does with his bulky sporting equipment in a tiny home How minimalism has shaped Michael’s life ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? The weather is warming up, the birds are chirping, the sun is out more, there’s a feeling of renewal, and we’re ready to throw off the winter doldrums for a breath of fresh air. And with the changing of the seasons also comes spring cleaning. Dun, dun, dunnn! I know. I don't really like cleaning either. Yes, you heard that right...a minimalist who teaches others how to keep a tidy home so they can live a better life doesn't like cleaning. But, just because I don't like it, doesn't mean I don't do it. Spring cleaning my home helps me (and my family) to enjoy our house to the fullest. So, if it must be done, why not make it as quick and easy as possible? That’s what this episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show is all about! I walk you through how to clean your home from top to bottom - and not just straighten up, but deep clean the things that matter and leave your home feeling refreshed - all in just one day. It will be a long day, but it will be D - O - N - E. And that my friend is my favorite part about having a clean home - how I feel when it’s all done. I feel as though I could tackle the world. Anything is possible and it's the best feeling to take into spring. Don’t you think? This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The two ways you can spring clean in a day How to clean your house based on the tasks required The right cleaning order so you can make quick work of it Why you might want to clean based on how functional a room is What items you need to declutter and tidy any space (it’s only 3 things!) ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? I am the decluttering go-to in my group so it’s pretty common for people to come to me when they have questions about what to do with their stuff, how to organize something, or issues letting go of the things in their home. And what I heard was pretty typical. She told me that she’s tried to declutter in the past, but has basically given up at this point because no matter what she tries her home becomes messy again in a week, month tops. She also told me her husband’s not really on board and her mom buys her kids anything they want, even though she has asked her mother to stop. Sound familiar? However, instead of jumping in and saying that decluttering was no use, I asked her if her stuff was in order. And here’s where it hit home. My friend said she didn't see the point of getting her home in order when she felt all alone. There's just so much to do that she felt like she failed even before she started. My heart broke a bit for her. The good news is, there are ways to fix this decluttering situation, so I gave her tips to help her solve these issues and I’m sharing that same advice with you because as we were talking, I realized that she was making the same mistakes I see over and over. And if she was making these mistakes, it’s likely you are too. ** Let’s fix that so you can move forward in confidence and no longer feel like you are alone on this journey. Did you know that more than three quarters (76%) of employed Americans report they are currently experiencing burnout? It’s a huge problem in the work place, but let’s be honest...moms experience burnout too. Whether you're a working mom, a stay at home mom, or a work from home mom, it’s all hard. It’s just not studied as much. It’s also true that women are more likely to experience burnout than men - 80% vs 72% - but I’m not sure that’s a big surprise as women often feel more household responsibilities fall to them in addition to paid or unpaid responsibilities. Burnout is more common than we realize and it’s important to talk about it so people know they are not alone. We frequently hear people talking about stress and overwhelm and while overwhelm can go with both burnout and stress the way we react to both is different. No matter who you are and what your work situation is like, we are all bound to face negative feelings, stress, overwhelm, and potentially burnout at some point in our lives. The good news is we can do something about it. When you feel burnout coming on it can be hard to motivate yourself to do anything so these 10 ways to stop burnout are simple and can be implemented right now. The will get the ball rolling and can help you go from overwhelmed to in control so you can get back to enjoying life. And let me just say that I am not a health professional. The advice I give today is what has worked for me personally. If you are feeling depressed, down, strong burnout, or anxiety I recommend you speak with a health professional who can help. It’s a bit like the philosophical question of the chicken and the egg. We’re not sure which came first? In this instance the question becomes does life better because you declutter or do you declutter as you get closer to your dream life? And maybe you think it's a hard question because everyone’s idea of a dream or ideal life is different. Yes, that is true. What seems ideal for one person might be the opposite of what you would consider a dream. The good news is that our definition and visions of dream lives actually have very little to do with the steps we need to take to get there. So no matter if you want to be a homeschooling parent or prefer to send your children to school - you can use these steps. If you want to travel the world or explore your city they will work for you too. They will even work no matter how much or little money you have in the bank. The 3 steps outlined in this episode will help you create a clear vision for your life, let go of the comparison trap, and create space so you can enjoy the life of your dreams. Let’s explore how we can create a life you don’t feel like you need a vacation from. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why the first step to getting the life you want is knowing what it is How to create goals that improve your whole life The 10 life categories you need to consider when creating your vision The simplest way to get out of the comparison trap How decluttering makes it easier to live your dream life ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? This is one of my favorite places to start. Yes, some people say to start in your bathroom because there are fewer emotional decisions to be made there and there is less stuff to deal with, but for me the sense of accomplishment and joy I feel when looking at an organized closet is worth the effort. When my closet is organized, I am able to start my day off on the right foot. I can see all of the clothing I own and it makes it easier to choose an outfit for the day. When my day begins with less stress it carries over throughout my day and makes the other areas of my life easier too. Adopting a capsule wardrobe has seriously helped my closet organization issues and taken this to a whole new level, but you don't have to go that far to see amazing results. These 4 easy steps can help you get your closet under control no matter if you are a fashionista and love to have the latest and greatest trends or if you are more like me and enjoy a simple wardrobe that mixes and matches. The principles are the same and before you know it your closet will be clutter free, organized, and feeling amazing. Opening those doors just might become one of your favorite parts of your day and any day that starts with a smile is a winner in my book. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why the first step to organizing your closet isn’t even touching your clothes How to create space for everything you love with the container method An update to one of the most trusted organization methods The easiest way to declutter - not you do not have to take it all out at once Why making your space is important and what it does for long-term organization ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? You might not think that how we spend our money or the thoughts we have about money have anything to do with our stuff. Or maybe you just think that only those who over spend and buy stuff they do not need are the only ones who experience the link between spending and clutter. But, for many people - myself included - the way we think about money, even when we do not over spend, has a giant impact on the items in our homes. In addition to over spending, the other big issue when it comes to money and stuff is under buying. They are on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to spending money and both cause problems in our homes and lives. But, how can spending less money and under buying be a problem when it comes to clutter and having an organized home? Turns out, there is a balance between buying enough so that you have what you need when you need it and buying too much, causing too many piles to build up in your home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why under spending actually causes you to stress more about the things in your home How over spending leads to mounds of clutter and unwanted bills Examples of under buying and over spending to see if either affects you The difference between under spending and under buying / over spending and compulsive shopping 5 simple things you can do to overcome either under buying or over spending ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? That’s how we learn and grow. And my journey toward a clutter free life has seen it's share of minimalist mistakes and frugal failures. In fact, I am a pretty frugal person. It’s just in my nature and the idea of buying less (and thus spending less) is probably what drew me to minimalism in the first place. However, what has kept me on this journey is a simpler, more intentional life that is just easier to manage. When you have less stuff, there is less to worry about, less to clean, and less to get in your way. Unless, you take it too far. When that happens, the practice of having less can actually make life more difficult. This is what a minimalist fail is. And when you waste money - when your intention was to save money...that is a frugal fail. My hope is that by sharing some of my most memorable minimalist mistakes and frugal failures, I can help spare you from these same troubles. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why spending the least is not always best How coupons actually work and why I never use them What I do now to save money on cable and streaming services The problem with DIY projects My horrible travel hack failure and what I will never do again ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** I am excited to announce a big change I am making to my brand, why I’m doing it now, and what it means for the future of this show, website, and my business. It sounds super dramatic and while it is a big change, I don’t want you to worry. The changes are big in branding - so the name of the website and look of it will be changing, but the content and the reason behind what I teach and discuss will be staying mostly the same. A few weeks ago I had this nagging feeling in my gut that I was not getting my message out to the people I could really be helping. While I relate to minimalism and love the tenets of living with only the things I feel are necessary to enjoy my life, I know I have a LONG way to go until I would feel ready to call myself a true minimalist. However, there is something about the label of minimalism that makes me cringe just a bit. I’ve never felt extreme enough to help people who want to be hard-core minimalists. But, for the people who want to live with less stuff, the word minimalism puts them off as it feels too unattainable. So in order to help the most people (especially those who need it the most) find this website and podcast, I am changing the name. It’s all laid out in this episode and I hope you enjoy it. Don’t forget to explore the newly designed website too. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why I decided now was the right time to change my brand How the change will affect this podcast (or not) The steps I took to evaluate the name of my business What people in my real life think when I talk about minimalism The big goals behind what lead to this change ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? I’ve moved over 20 times in my life and while I am pretty skilled at it, moving with a school-aged child made me understand that my most recent move was going to be different. So I called in an expert to help me along the way. Ali Wenzke is the author of The Art of Happy Moving: How to Declutter, Pack, and Start Over While Maintaining Your Sanity and Finding Happiness and a real estate broker with Baird & Warner in Winnetka, IL. Ali and her husband moved ten times in eleven years, living in six U.S. states. Known as the “Marie Kondo of moving", Ali’s advice has been featured on TV, radio, and podcasts as well as in Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Today, Real Simple, Fast Company, Parents magazine and many more. Ali is happily settled in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three kids and for now doesn't plan on moving any time soon. Our discussions starts with the move that lead Ali to buckle down and declutter and I push her to give us her best tips on moving with children, what to do when other family members don't share your same vision, and what to do when you get into your new home. Yes, moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can be a time of rejuvenation and reinvention of one’s self. And even if you have no plans to move, you can learn to declutter like you are moving and enjoy the benefits of a lighter home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The secret to making a big move easier A fun game to help your kids declutter How to get your family on board with decluttering for a move Why you don’t have to move to reap the rewards of thinking like a mover The best tips for organizing your new home quickly ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Often with those goals comes new hobbies. And with new hobbies comes more stuff. There is a term that encapsulates this increase in stuff. It’s called clutter creep and it means the accumulation of new things as we go through life. It’s the adding of more to your space without getting rid of something else at the same time. Without discipline, it’s easy to end up with a home overrun by all of the stuff you need to do these hobbies or accomplish your new goals. Figuring out what to do with this happens - because trust me it will happen - is not only possible, but there are steps you can take to keep it from happening in the first place. The good news is you can still be a minimalist and have hobbies. You can even have more than one hobby. It depends on what other stuff you have, the space you have in your home, and what ultimately brings you joy. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why hobbies are important and should not be cut out of your life How to evaluate your hobbies What I do to limit hobby clutter creep in my home Why starting small is smart What minimum viable amount means and why it’s the key to keeping clutter at bay ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? And after the craziness of the past two years, I am so ready to get back in the driver’s seat and I know you probably are too. The best way to make a difference in your life is to start at home. Do you think of minimalism as a design aesthetic with bare white walls and barely any furniture? Or maybe it makes you think of people who live with only 100 items or less. Or perhaps you equate minimalism with living an intentional or simple life. All three of these definitions is right and that's what makes trying to define minimalism such a tricky task. When I started on this journey of podcasting, it was a way for me to explore decluttering, organizing, and living with less while sharing my experience with you. I’ve been lucky enough to interview some amazing women along the way and as I looked back on past episodes I realized how much I have grown in how I see things and how much my family has grown too. I will not lie...I am very much a work in progress. I too wish I could just snap my fingers and have the messy work done. Self-reflection feels scary and honestly, exhausting. But, it’s all part of the process and as we come to the close of another year, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on 10 beliefs I have about minimalism. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why minimalism is about more than just the stuff in your home How people react when they hear I host a show about minimalism What perfectionism has to do with minimalism The biggest revelation I had in the last year that has to do with our homes and self-care Tips for overcoming the guilt of letting go expensive items ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? If so, do you ever wonder if choosing different colors would look better on you? Or maybe you struggle with getting all of your colors to coordinate and look good together instead of feeling like you're drowning in a sea of mismatched rainbows. My guest this week on the Wannabe Minimalist Podcast is a color expert that helps women find their best colors based on their skin, hair, and eye color so I invited her on to help us decipher this world of color. To be honest, I'm a sucker for a capsule wardrobe, but have never been comfortable with much color. Jeannie Stith is on a mission to help those of us who are lost when it comes to color. She is the founder and CEO of Color Guru, where she matches people to their ideal color palette for clothing so that they can look better, simplify clothes shopping, and create a coordinated wardrobe through her signature color cards. Jeannie's a mother of two girls and lives in Arden, Delaware. When she’s not analyzing her client's photos, you can find her hopping on rocks in the creek with her daughters, salsa dancing, or watering her current collection of 55 house plants. Our discussions starts with looking at how Jeannie became interested in colors in the first place and we tackle what's involved with finding the colors that will work best for you. I also press her when it comes to what you should do when you don't like the colors that have been suggested for you in the past. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why your closet may be letting you down A simple way to hone in on your ideal color palette The color that will make your eyes pop - it might just surprise you! There are so many goodies and treats on display at every turn beckoning us to indulge. So, how can we be more intentional about what we eat without missing out on the good stuff, watching the scale climb, or feeling guilty? My guest this week on the Wannabe Minimalist Podcast has been helping women eat healthier and feel better for years so naturally I reached out to have her on the show to help us during this difficult time. Laura Marzen, RD, LD, started her career as a nutrition specialist in the Better Homes and Gardens® test kitchen, where she developed and tested recipes for a variety of magazines and cookbooks and appeared in cooking videos for both TV and online media. Now she’s focusing her attention on her website, Fresh Food Bites, www.freshfoodbites.com, where she features healthy, approachable, family-friendly recipes that are gluten and dairy free. In addition, she currently coaches women to help them improve their gut health and overcome IBS in a way that is practical and sustainable. Our discussions starts with looking at how Laura became interested in digestive health and what it has to do with living an intentional life. There are so many similarities between cutting the crap out of your home and cutting out the junk that you eat so I was thrilled to have a chance to connect with her on the show. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why your calendar is one of your biggest assets when meal planning Simple healthy snack ideas your kids will actually eat Tips for eating healthy at the holidays (it’s not what you expect!) Of course we are all thankful for the wonderful people in our lives and our health (if we are lucky to have it), but this year, I want to encourage you to find ways to be thankful for your home. It's so easy to get bogged down and overwhelmed by the everyday maintenance and upkeep of a home - there are bills to pay, meals to cook, tubs and toilets to scrub, laundry to fold, and a never ending pile of dishes to wash - ugh...the dishes. Then, there might be all of the changes in your home that you wish to make - tidy up your living room, declutter your bedroom, toss the mounds of toys! Am I right? So, instead of focusing on what we don't like or the things we want to change, take some time this year and hone in on what you love about your home. It's okay to enjoy and relish in the physical things you love about it or how it makes you feel. Building up a bank of gratitude will not only help you to be happier and see all of the blessings in your life, but it will help you work through any challenges that come up - like when you tackle that decluttering project in the new year. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: 7 questions to help you uncover what you love about your home A simple project to increase gratitude all year long Why gratitude is so important How gratitude can help you declutter and share A peek into 7 things I love about my home ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Ep 77Ep 77: Making Your House, Your Unique Home with Marian Parsons

You deserve a home that is a unique reflection of yourself and your family - not a cookie-cutter one… Links mentioned in this episode (some may be affiliate links): Get more show notes and additional free resources at wannabeclutterfree.com/77 Discover my favorite resources here Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** Have you ever wanted to up level or personalize the way your home feels, but didn't know where to start? Well, my friend, you are in luck. This may sound strange coming from someone who classifies themselves as a wannabe minimalist, but I believe minimalism is about giving yourself the freedom and ability to say no to the things that you don't like or that don't matter to you, so that you can fully embrace the things that do work for you (and the people you share your life with). That is true in all of the areas in your life from what you wear to the hobbies you choose, and of course in how you style your home. My guest knows a thing or two about creating a unique space. She did this for herself and her family when she found herself living in suburbia after a cross-country move, instead of in the 100-year-old farmhouse she had been dreaming of. Marian Parson is a wife, mother of two boys, paint enthusiast, lover of all things home and author of *Feels Like Home*. She started Mustard Seed Interiors in 2008, as a way to earn extra money for groceries. What started out as a one-woman decorative painting and mural business evolved into an antiques business that tripped into a blog and blossomed into a successful international brand. While the focus has been on the home, the heart of her blog and business has always been providing encouragement and inspiration to women in the areas of decorating, homemaking, and creative endeavors. Our discussions starts with looking at how Marian's journey started and why our relationships with our homes are so important. Then we dive into an area I was selfishly looking forward to and that's how to style your home to make people say, wow, you did this? This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why it's important to create a space that is a reflection of who lives there 5 steps to take your space from nice to wow! A simple exercise to get to know your unique style What you can do to get your family interested in redecorating your space The #1 thing you can start today that will help you be able to create the home you love ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? But, for new minimalists - or anyone looking to declutter the abundance of stuff in their homes - the holidays also come with the dread of telling well-meaning family that they do not want many presents. This can be a tough conversation to have because for some people, giving gifts is the way they communicate love. And because they love you so much, they want to shower you with more gifts, trinkets, toys, and goodies to last you a lifetime. Unfortunately this can be a major source of frustration for not only the gift receiver as they stress about the perhaps unwanted gifts coming into their home, but also for the gift giver who may feel unappreciated. Instead of being ungrateful and telling the people in your life that any gifts they give you will be promptly donated (seriously, please do not do that), there are some great ways we can be open an honest with the overly-generous people in our lives without hurting their feelings. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The importance of sharing why you want fewer physical presents 3 strategies for talking to a well-meaning gift giver A subtle but important mind shift that will help you at the holidays The 5 love languages - not all have to do with giving things One thing you can do to cut back on clutter at the holidays ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Ep 75Ep 75: Simplifying Your Money Habits with Chelsea Brennan

Simplifying the management of your money - even if it's not much - is a great way to live intentionally and improve your life as a minimalist. There are a ton of overlaps when it comes to stuff and money and it's important we pass on good money habits to our children. Links mentioned in this episode (some may be affiliate links): Get more show notes and additional free resources at wannabeclutterfree.com/75 Discover my favorite resources here Tidy Home Academy - Empowering you to declutter and organize so you can have the tidy, happy home you crave. Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** If you have been on a journey to simplify, declutter and organize - or you want to just create more intention in your life, it's important to take a look at your money habits. Not only will cultivating better mindsets around money help you move past money blocks, but when you have a better handle on your own money habits you can help your children learn about money and understand how to create better money values as a family. This is one of my goals for this year. My daughter is eight and I felt it was time to help her understand money, how it's earned, how it can grow, and what it can and cannot do. As it turns out, I'm a bit late to the game, but my guest was able to show me that while I am late, it's still fixable. Chelsea is the founder of Smart Money Mamas and its monthly membership community, the Motivated Mama Society. An ex-hedge fund manager turned financial educator, she is dedicated to changing the way we talk about money, helping moms connect with all aspects of their money in a way that lets them overcome emotional blocks, identify what they most want, and create the healthy money habits that help them achieve their biggest goals. All while modeling positive money relationships for the next generation. Our discussions starts with looking at how to establish money values if you didn't come from a family that talked about money and we take a deep look at how to help children save and foster a giving spirit. Not only will today's lesson help you with your money mindsets, it will also help you look at your stuff in a new light as well. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why money mindsets are so important What age your core money ideas are formed (and it's earlier than you think) How you can create better money habits with 3 words Simple tips for instilling generosity in your children If allowances are a good idea ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? At least that's what the songs and marketers tell us anyway. We're constantly told that the holiday season is supposed to feel special and magical. Christmas is a time filled with love, laughter, coziness, and connection. But, can I be honest with you? The holidays are stressful. Or at least they can be if you try to do all the things, be at all the places, and close your eyes as you repeatedly swipe your credit card and buy more stuff than you need. That's why as a family we said enough was enough and gradually over the past few years have honed in on what we really want to focus on for the holiday season. And I am not alone. Throughout the years I have continued to get questions about how to simplify decorations and gift giving, how to find more meaning and connection, and how to keep a home organized in spite of the hustle and bustle. So, I thought it was time to do a Q & A session to tackle your big questions for the season. I chat a bit about what we do for the holidays to keep it meaningful yet simple and stress-free as well as what you can do to prepare for the season in your own home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you: Determine what the holidays mean for you How to recreate the magic you felt as a child Why more stuff is not the answer Ways to cut back on toys and gifts but not feel like Scrooge Simple decoration ideas to cut down on clutter but not the festive feel ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Well, my friend, a decluttering challenge may be just the thing you need! A decluttering challenge helps you let go of the stuff cluttering up your home or life. It can be very specific and focus on only one area of your life like your wardrobe or very broad and address your home, mindset, habits and more. A decluttering challenge can be short and last a few days or extend for a full year (as one of the options I discuss in today's podcast episode does). However, challenges give you a fun way to switch things up which makes decluttering feel more like a game. It’s been shown that your information and skill retention increase by as much as 40% when what you are working on is gamified. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: My favorite things about declutter challenges Why decluttering challenges are so powerful The best way to start a decluttering challenge How to fit a decluttering challenge into your life What I don't like about each challenge so you know what to look out for ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Does it make you think of stark walls? Do you think it means living with the least amount of stuff possible? That’s not what minimalism means to me. For me, minimalism means freedom. Freedom to buy less and thus need less money. Freedom to travel more instead of buying a large home. Freedom to change careers instead of owning a fancy car. Being a wannabe minimalist is someone who lives intentionally, but is not defined by how much or how little they own. A wannabe minimalist is intentional about what they allow into their homes because they know once it’s in, it’s ten times harder to get out. This episode gives you a peek behind the curtain and the three life changing events that drew me to minimalism. I rarely speak so candidly about how I live my life and what really goes on behind closed doors. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How I got into minimalism in the first place If my husband was always on board with this idea of living with less How minimalism works for our family of three What I really think of decluttering toys Strategies for decluttering and creating a happy home ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? After all, you know the vision of the way you want your home to be, so why is it so difficult to get it. The reality is, even if you declutter, without the right mindsets around stuff and a few simple habits to help you create better systems and routines, your home will more than likely become messy again. That's because our mindsets not only control our thoughts, but our actions. The good news is that you can create better mindsets - those that will support you on your journey to a better life instead of sabotaging any success you might have. And when you boost those mindsets with good habits, you can make it so clutter no longer overwhelms you or your home and massive decluttering sessions can become a thing of the past. You know it will make a positive difference in your home or life. So, why is it so hard and why do you resist it so much? The answer is that you are running up against a decluttering roadblock. These are mental blocks that keep us from decluttering and detaching from our things. Some of them you may already understand you're facing, but some may be trickier; lurking in the recess of your mind without you really knowing they are in your way. The first step to making any meaningful change in life is to shine a light on areas in our lives that we want to change. Once you know the change you want to make you can commit to making it happen. If you want a tidier home that you can be proud of, one that's easy to clean, or make it easy to find things, or to not be ashamed of what it might look like if people show up unannounced, these roadblocks could be what are holding you back. And clearing out these roadblocks will also help clear your mind so you can find the calm in your head as well as your home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The most common decluttering roadblocks everyone faces so you know you are not alone Why it's important to face the things in your way before you dive into decluttering What some of these roadblocks mean when it comes to your stuff How knowing the mindsets holding you back is half the battle when it comes to decluttering The #1 way you can find freedom from these roadblocks on your way to a tidy home and vibrant life ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** Is it possible to declutter and live a more simple life without being wasteful? This was a question asked to me by Wendy recently in my private Wannabe Minimalist Family Community (click here if you want to join). And it’s a common question that a lot of us face on our journey to better lives with less stuff. After we get over the urge to buy, spend, and add more to our lives and in our homes, the guilt of having spent so much over the years and the idea of just tossing it all can get pretty heavy. There are several different ways to look at what we mean by wasteful. It could be tied to money, or the environment, or the ideas we had for our future selves that never really materialized. No matter which way you slice it, guilt and the feeling of wastefulness often appear as we declutter, downsize, and let go of things we no longer need. But, the good news is, there are a few tried and true strategies for overcoming this feeling of guilt. If you are in a place where you want to bridge the juxtaposition between wanting to simplify and wanting to be resourceful and not wasteful, then this episode is for you. This podcast episode will not only walk you through the different meanings of wastefulness and guilt, but will also show you how to overcome them and move forward in an authentic way. Get ready to live the simple and intentional life you’re longing for…guilt-free! This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will help you discover: The 3 things we mean when we talk about being wasteful How a simple mindset shift can get you to see your stuff in a new light Why holding on to stuff can be more wasteful than letting it go The #1 strategy for having less stuff that has nothing to do with decluttering Ways to let go of the guilt holding you back from purging items you no longer use so you can live your best life. ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Perhaps you were just using the wrong techniques. Just like we all have different innate personalities, there are ways to tidy up that come more naturally to each person. Along my journey to living a better life with less stuff, I have discovered two main ways people declutter and organize the stuff the own, the spaces they live in, and their social lives. The first is editing the stuff you have by removing the unnecessary and the second is curating what you keep by only allowing in the items you care about in the first place. Neither is better than the other and it’s important to use the techniques and strategies that work best for you. When you use the proper option for your personality, decluttering and organizing becomes so much easier. You can stop fighting against your natural tendencies and finally make progress. Today’s episode will not only walk you through the differences between editing and curating your things, but will also show you how to use the techniques in 6 distinct areas of your home and life so you can put them into practice right away. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will help you discover: How editing and curating relate to being an introvert and extrovert Why it’s so important to declutter and organize based on your personality What to do so you can make progress and quickly tidy up A look at 6 distinct areas where you can use editing or curating in your life Whether Marie Kondo and The Minimalists are editors or curators ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? The homes look so quaint and relaxing and the people living in them swear they are like a secret to finding happiness. I have always been curious about the movement myself and wanted to see what it was really like. The best way to see what it’s like is to try it on for size and that’s exactly what we did! This summer I embarked on a tiny living experiment with my husband, our daughter, and my parents. While we did not live in the RV long term - and I do not live with my parents in regular life - we did live in it long enough to get a good idea of what full time living would be like. These are the top 10 lessons I learned from living tiny that I am taking into my everyday life of living as a wannabe minimalist. Some you are probably expecting, but some may come as a surprise. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will help you discover: What it’s really like to live tiny as a family The most important thing to remember when living tiny Why living tiny may not be for everyone How to see through what others are saying to find what you really want A simple hack that works for every home - not just tiny ones. ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast?
