S3 Ep 2The ”NU Standard” Is Respecting The Professional License

E

Let us know if you have any burning questions you need answered. Send us your questions for celebrity stylists, brand educators, ambassadors or c-suite members and we will work to get those answered by someone we trust who can lend a brush! Send in your questions via email to [email protected]. Intro Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thedadbodveteran/video/7308110768635907370 Interview with Autumn Yarbrough Autumn Yarbrough didn’t want to go bald like the three generations of women before Her. So, she created a NU Standard to ensure no woman ever does. NU Standard is a revolutionary company with a hair wellness approach toward textured hair. The products aren’t just for black women because it’s a black-owned company, NU Standard’s products are designed to help all women with textured hair. It’s about setting a NU Standard in the haircare industry and helping women overcome their hair challenges and achieve their hair goals But it’s not just about hair wellness. Autumn caters to busy women on the go whether they work from home, corporate America or spend the day as CEO of their families. Bottom line: She understands some women have a few minutes not hours to get their hair just right, so they feel confident while avoiding what seems inevitable: hair damage and hair loss. Autumn wanted to create products that made it easy to care for textured hair without damaging or losing it. She was determined to develop a solution for her Busy Queens, especially those with textured hair, to prevent hair loss. Autumn’s blessing is that the haircare industry has been part of her life since birth. After all, her grandfather, Comer Cottrell Jr., created a haircare company in the late 60s that became a global company. Her mom created successful brands that still thrive and her father has helped restructure several haircare companies and some have grown into overnight successes. Autumn grew up in the business. She worked on the assembly line as an eight-year-old and dabbled in various departments until she went to college. After graduating from USC, Autumn found success in the world of finance and insurance. But the stress from running her company was starting to affect her hair. The more she thought about it, the more Autumn knew she needed to follow her passion and help those women with textured hair keep it healthy and strong. She initially struggled with changing her career midlife but she wanted to do something that would really affect people’s lives. To build her company, Autumn emphasized one of her grandfather’s tenets of business: Build a team of people who are smarter than you to make the dream come true. She set her ego aside and asked the best in the industry for help to build a NU Standard. Sponsored by OLAPLEX® https://pro.olaplex.com/ Interview with John Moroney With over 35 years in hairdressing, John Moroney has had the unique opportunity to work at virtually every level of the industry. Starting with Aveda Corporation in the early days of the brand, he eventually became Global Director of Education, reporting to founder Horst Rechelbacher. The next phase of his career led him to Los Angeles where he spent the next fourteen years leading Global Education for Sebastian and then with Wella / P&G Salon Professional. Joining Kao Salon Division in 2011, John headed the company’s global education & communication efforts, as well as serving as Global Creative Director for Goldwell, KMS, Varis and Kerasilk. S2 Ep 48Men’s Grooming Through the Years with American Crew’s David Raccuglia

E

Sponsored by OLAPLEX https://pro.olaplex.com/ Interview with David Raccuglia David Raccuglia is a man of many titles and accomplishments: company founder, entrepreneur and renowned photographer, but his first professional title was a hairstylist. He began his career as a stylist in the salon industry and today styling, and the salon community, continue to be his primary inspiration and motivation. After having traveled worldwide as a platform artist in the early 1980’s he opened his own salon. Frustrated by the lack of grooming options on the market, but inspired by what he recognized as a true need, David founded American Crew® in 1994, bringing his expertise from behind both the barber chair and the camera to develop the brand and its collection of grooming products designed for men and the stylists they trust. American Crew® quickly established itself as the leading manufacturer of quality salon products for men, offering a diverse portfolio including hair care, styling, shave and body products. Today, American Crew® continues to be the leading professional men’s grooming brand in the world. David is also an accomplished photographer, contributing his talent in this area across books, magazine covers and rock albums. He has built success through a well-earned reputation for all things relevant, refined and modern. His vision of uncompromised quality is key to his success. S2 Ep 47Why The Cosmetology Licensure Compact Matters To You

E

Sponsored by OLAPLEX https://pro.olaplex.com/ Sponsored by Professional Beauty Association https://www.probeauty.org/executive-summit/ Interview with Leslie Roste Leslie Roste, RN, BSN graduated from the University of Kansas, where she studied Nursing and Microbiology. After leaving nursing, she began working in the professional beauty industry as a subject matter expert on infection control and public safety. She has written many articles and spoken to audiences large and small on infection control and chemical safety in the work environment and specializes in the salon and barber industry. In 2020, she became the lead grant applicant on the Cosmetology Compact, working with the Department of Defense and Council of State Governments (CSG) to develop model legislation. Leslie currently works with the CSG (Council of State Governments) on behalf of FBIC on enacting the Cosmetology Interstate Licensure Compact, securing true license mobility for cosmetologists. Previously, Leslie worked with cosmetology boards in over 30 states on the revision of infection control rules and required curriculums consistent with current science and occupational trends. Throughout Covid, she assisted states in developing re-opening guidelines and offered education in all virtual formats to help states re-open. She is a national exam item writer and participated in the Safe Nevada project as well as the Department of Labor Occupational Licensing Consortium. Today we’re talking about the Cosmetology Interstate Licensure Compact. According to the Professional Beauty Association’s website The Cosmetology Compact is an interstate occupational licensure compact. Interstate compacts are constitutionally authorized, legislatively enacted, legally binding agreements among states. The Cosmetology Compact will enable licensed cosmetologists to practice in all states that join the compact, rather than getting an individual license in every state in which they want to practice. Like the compact for a driver’s license, each compact member state agrees to mutually recognize the practitioner licenses issued by every other member state. S2 Ep 45So Much More Than A Perm

E

Sponsored by JCPenney Salons https://jobs.jcp.com/search/salon-professionals/jobs Interview with Janine Jarman Janine Jarman is a nationally renowned celebrity hairstylist and the founder of Hairroin Salon LA & NYC, the home of Hollywood and New York’s best tressed. Born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA, Jarman has been “hair-obsessed” for as long as she can remember. At the age of 15, she teamed up with her best friend to offer hair and makeup services to her party-bound classmates. Jarman then moved on to beauty school, and after graduating, she immediately began shooting for the stars. Jarman steadily built a loyal client base until she was bit by the entrepreneurial bug in 2005. She purchased a failing salon and immediately re-branded and re-opened it as Hairroin Salon. Hairroin instantly became Tinseltown’s newest obsession, garnering Hollywood clientele including Florence Welch, Tommy Lee, Kylie Minogue, Danica Patrick, and Fergie. For many years Jarman was the key stylist and official hairdresser for the world’s most successful female pop group, The Pussycat Dolls. Jarman was the creator of their signature look, which led to work with celebrities such as Christina Applegate, Britney Spears, Lil’ Kim, and Carmen Electra. Jarman has also been the principal hairstylist for television shows including ”Beauty and the Geek,” “The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for The Next Doll,” endless commercial spots, and live shows like the MTV Movie Awards. In 2010 she burst into the national spotlight as a finalist on the third season of Bravo’s hit show “Shear Genius.” Jarman instantly became a favorite among the judges and was voted Fan Favorite of her season, standing out for her fearless hair creations, free spirit, and endless amounts of energy. Having naturally curly hair herself, she leaned into using perms to solve texture issues her clients were facing – but felt the need to reimagine the traditional perm process, odor and environmental impact. This led her to Italy where she conjured up Curl Cult, delivering a simpler, healthier, more sustainable texturizing treatment with at-home curl support products even natural curls will love. S2 Ep 44The Future of Extensions...Or Should We Say Hair Solutions

E

Interview with Brandon Hutchins Brandon Hutchins is practically a lifelong student of marketing, a passion he’s been cultivating since creating his own company right out of high school. “Back then, I wanted to know what motivated people to call me after seeing my advertisements,” he says, “and more importantly, what kept them coming back!” It’s this initial interest that’s blossomed into a 14-year career in professional sales and marketing across multiple industries. Brandon’s experience is robust, showcasing proven abilities in direct technical sales and marketing strategy and implementation -- domestically and internationally. He’s a people person and multilingual, two skills that have served him well in creating and maintaining international marketing and distribution channels in his various positions. Brandon currently serves as Beauty Industry Group’s President of Professional Brands, leading a team in conceptualizing, coordinating and maintaining successful marketing and advertising campaigns throughout the worldwide beauty supply market. It’s a position he enjoys because he’s constantly afforded opportunities to learn and discover new marketing trends. In a field that can be fickle and indefinable, Brandon’s focus is unwavering: Create crisp and organic marketing campaigns that resonate and create growth. “What interests me is how it just all comes back to people and the relationships you create with them,” he says. “There are always new theories, this year’s hottest marketing trends and new advertising tactics but ultimately, people just want a good experience with a good product or service.” Links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandonhutchins/ https://beautyindustrygroup.com/ https://www.instagram.com/beautyindustrygroup/?hl=en https://babehairextensions.com/ https://beautyworksonline.com/ https://www.bellamihair.com/ https://donnabellahair.com/ https://flauntpro.com/ https://glamseamless.com/ https://hairtalkusa.com/ https://halocouture.com/ https://hiddencrownhair.com/ https://hotheads.com/ https://luxyhair.com/ https://twistedfringehair.com/ https://www.zalahair.com/ News from TheTease.com https://www.thetease.com/rco-just-launched-a-blow-out-balm-and-shaping-balm-that-youll-want-to-use-on-all-your-clients/ https://www.thetease.com/odele-is-taking-its-best-selling-dry-shampoo-on-the-road-with-dessa/ https://www.thetease.com/sexyhair-brings-the-magic-of-the-metaverse-to-haircare-with-its-latest-launch/ More from TheTease: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/readthetease/ (readthetease) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kellyehlers/ / (KellyEhlers) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eljeffreycraig/ (eljeffreycraig) Web: https://www.thetease.com (TheTease.com) Email: [email protected] Credits: Volume Up is a Tease Media production. Goodbye Glue are the first "medical-grade" adhesive strips designed to attach false eyelashes. Made with hypoallergenic material, Goodbye Glue strips are chemical-free, last 24 hours, are water resistant and super easy to apply. Not only are they FDA-approved but the safest, healthiest way to apply false eyelashes. The best part is they require no drying time and don't require assistance putting them on. Goodbye Glue is the beginning of many more "cutting-edge" products to come, according to Lisa. S2 Ep 38Introducing Beauty With A Purpose

E

Sponsored by BaBylissPRO https://babylisspro.com/babylisspro-nano-titanium-ionic-deep-waver/BNTDW01UC.html Interview with Julie Hightower and Mireya Villarreal All beauty enthusiasts wanting to deep dive into inspiration, motivation, business, and next-level mindset are invited to a fabulous event called Beauty With a Purpose, on Sunday, September 17, 2023, in Oak Brook, IL. Panelists from across the beauty industry and more will be giving back and sharing their blueprint to success. They will be sharing their achievements and their failures, their peaks, and valleys, in a straightforward, dynamic, no-nonsense way. Beauty With a Purpose is presented by Daisie Foundation and Pink Pewter Foundation. Proceeds from this event are awarded to incoming beauty professionals and barbers by way of scholarships and grants. This one-day industry event is a movement that is packed with influential beauty industry leaders, artists, and beauty brands, joining together to support and mentor guests at all levels of their career through development, networking and connecting. The event promises the tools, guidance, inspiration, knowledge, and motivation needed to succeed at every step of your journey. Julie Hightower, founding Board member of the Daisie Foundation, and Mireya Villarreal, founder of the Pink Pewter Foundation, created Beauty With a Purpose by coming together after partnering for many years with their non-profit organizations, and they wanted to bring it to the beauty industry. Mireya Villarreal is the founder and CEO of Pink Pewter. Mireya’s creative vision for styling was deeply rooted in her mother’s hair salon. After the birth of her daughter, she began producing headbands and has expanded to a full range of accessories and salon essentials through her brand, Pink Pewter. Pink Pewter has seen significant expansion since its inception, developing a vast portfolio of accessories and salon supplies and selling in more than 30 nations worldwide. Mireya is the creative force behind the Pink Pewter designs. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Mireya learned the value of hard work, passion and sacrifice. With the continued success of her own brand, Pink Pewter, Mireya wanted to help beauty professionals grow their careers or businesses in a more powerful way through The Pink Pewter Foundation. The Pink Pewter Foundation is a 501c3 Non-Profit organization created with the goal of providing inspiration, resources, and financial assistance grants to beauty professionals. Julie Hightower is a media darling, philanthropist and a founding board member of Daisie Foundation. For the women who lust after the $4,000 designer dresses in magazines, but have to buy the $100 version; for those who yearn to feel beautiful and powerful, but must often find that power within themselves; and for those who feel trapped as vulnerable members of our society, and just need a helping hand to lift them up. Through her weekly web-series A Better Day with Julie and philanthropic efforts throughout her community, Julie is that helping hand, offering fashion and beauty tips for the everyday woman, empowering them to appreciate themselves and to embrace the confidence that comes when one’s outer beauty matches the goodness inside. Daisie Foundation is a nationally recognized organization whose mission lies in empowering women and children in overlooked communities by providing ongoing opportunities to succeed. The work is rooted in random acts of kindness that, over the years, have impacted 3,700 mothers and 8,900 students and counting in Chicago, Houston, and Milwaukee. S2 Ep 35Phyla: Skincare That Actually Treats The Root Of Acne

E

Interview with Dr. Yug Varma Dr. Varma is the Cofounder & CEO of Phyla, the world’s most advanced probiotic acne system. He has 10+ years of microbiome research experience including an extensive background in bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, and synthetic biology. Dr. Varma received his scientific training at several distinguished academic institutions, including Johns Hopkins University (PhD) and University of California, San Francisco. His scientific work has been published in many prestigious journals, including Nature. Dr. Varma’s mission is to change the way we treat chronic bacterial diseases, and is working tirelessly to achieve this goal with a microbiome-based technology platform. He is passionate about promoting scientific literacy, and devotes a significant amount of time demystifying microbiome research and making the latest research accessible to the general public. While developing technology, Dr. Varma discovered an application to tackle acne which he quickly realized is a serious problem without a safe, high-quality solution on the market. So he set out to build Phyla and the 3-Step Phyla Phage System, to meet the unmet consumer need for clean, effective skincare and acne-fighting products. Phyla’s breakthrough technology uses a naturally occurring organism called bacteriophage (phage, for short) that specifically targets the overgrowth of acne bacteria. This phage has been shown to flourish in healthy skin, but is nearly absent on acne-affected skin. Dr. Varma decided to democratize this revolutionary organism, put it in a bottle, and make it accessible to everyone who needs it. Interview with Aga Tompkins With a passion for personal development and a deep understanding of image, Aga Tompkins is Celebrity Hairstylist / Makeup Artist, Certified Professional Beauty Educator, Motivational Speaker, and Amika Brand Manager with more than 15 years of experience driving positive impacts in the beauty and music industries. Aga’s journey began when she founded her salon – Rock Razor Scissors – and quickly scaled it from local business to market leader by providing niche services to touring artists. Before she moved on to her next adventure, her business would serve some of the largest names in music, including Radiohead, Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Deftones, and Roger Waters. This experience opened the door to celebrity image development, and Aga fell in love with building and managing strategic brand images for some of the largest names in music. She served as Carly Rae Jepsen’s Global Tour Hairstylist/MUA for nearly a decade, expertly seizing the opportunity to build and manage a strategic brand and image for the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and actor. She designed hair and makeup for Jepsen’s appearances on and in SNL, the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cosmopolitan, Allure, and The New York Times. More importantly, Aga drew on both her passion for style and commitment to authenticity to design the long-term strategy and direction for the artist’s image. In doing so, she considered Jepsen’s personality alongside upcoming trends. Most recently, Aga demonstrates her love of motivation, training, and growth to teach image, authenticity, and beauty as Territory Brand Manager for Amika while continuing to tour the world as a guest speaker in the industry. One of her favorite teaching opportunities is serving as a Pro Educator and Content Creator for America’s Beauty Show. She creates and and maintains education and training materials from concept to execution while also directing live Zoom Continuing Education classes. At Amika, Aga has the opportunity to onboard, train, and mentor a sales team – as well as her clients’ employees – across an 11-state territory. In addition to managing everything from onboarding and training to mentoring and employee engagement, she creates content, designs innovative social media posts, and serves on the DEI and Giving Back Committee as a co-lead for their partnership with Beauty Changes Lives. Whether she’s traveling the country educating about beauty and authenticity or training team members to create a solid culture of growth and success, Aga applies her passion for professional development, understanding of image, and commitment to excellence to everything she does. Sponsored by Olivia Garden https://store.oliviagarden.com/pages/superhp Interview with Frédéric Fekkai Provence-born and Paris-trained, Frédéric Fekkai opened his first ground-breaking namesake salon atop New York’s Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1989 and today has the most recognized and luxurious hair salons in New York. During this time, he quickly became known for creating hairstyles on the catwalk, magazine covers and red carpets for notable supermodels and celebrities. In 1995, Frédéric created the prestige hair category with the launch of his product line, raising the industry standard from commodity to luxury by incorporating high performance ingredients found in prestige skincare, further enhanced by partnerships with the world's leading fragrance formulators. FEKKAI was acquired in 2006 by Procter & Gamble. Now, with a powerhouse standalone salon in Soho and an iconic salon within The Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side, Frédéric Fekkai has reclaimed his namesake brand, and re-launched FEKKAI with a new mission. He has created a high performance, clean collection of haircare that shatters the myths that clean products are less performative. With the brand's commitment to eliminate plastic waste by using high percentages of PCR in their recyclable bottles and tubes, and the latest product innovations, with three earth friendly, non-ozone depleting aerosols powered with Solstice® Propellant technology, he has sought out to do just that. S2 Ep 30Sometimes You Will Be The Only Woman Among Men, Show Them What You Know

Sponsored by JCPenney Salons https://jobs.jcp.com/search/salon-professionals/jobs Interview with Carolyn Aronson Carolyn Aronson is a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist and the founder and CEO of It’s a 10 Haircare, one of the only female-owned professional hair care brands in the world. A self-made entrepreneur, Aronson began her career with 20+ years as a hair stylist and salon owner, and continues to hold licenses in multiple states. It’s a 10 Haircare was born out of her frustration with brands that produced dozens of products with single benefits and hard-to-follow claims. She envisioned a line that was for everyone and delivered full, salon-quality results in just one bottle. She began with a star product, Miracle Leave-In, and the line quickly rose to fame through pro hair stylists, who shared the cult-favorite product with their clients. Now a successful, global hair product company with a passionate celebrity and consumer following, It’s a 10 Haircare products are sold in more than 25,000 professional independent salons and 15,000 professional salon chains like Ulta, and Regis. Carolyn’s brand has helped women and men across the globe look and feel their best, while also allowing Carolyn to pursue her key priorities: Making the world a better place, raising a successful family and creating a culture that embraces diversity. With her kind and creative nature, giving back to the communities that have supported It’s a 10 Haircare is also a priority. A Tease Talks Series: The Vision is the Ultimate Goal But You Don’t Have To Start There

bonusE

Are you overwhelmed by building your business but determined to make it work at whatever cost? Welcome to Tease Talks. This, once a month, digital media series is focused on providing business centered bite-sized pieces of content for those in the beauty industry. Working to connect with hair stylists, aestheticians, makeup artists, massage therapists and salon owners from around the world to educate and inspire pushing further in the beauty industry. Tease Talks will cover anything and everything that YOU want to hear or know. Head to @readthetease on socials to tell us who you want to hear from next! Produced by The Tease alongside Volume Up by The Tease. This month on Tease Talks we are talking with Sharie Wilson and Tonya Thompson, co-founders of DreamGirls, to talk about owning multiple salons and product innovation! DreamGirls is a women-owned, family-owned, and Black-owned salon and hair care line. DreamGirls Co-Founders Sharie Wilson and Tonya Thompson are on a mission to debunk the myth that black women *can’t* have long, healthy hair and change the negative narrative around natural hair and instead, be champions for textured hair. Thompson and Wilson are professional hairstylists with over a decade of experience who are recognized for their reputation of having “magic hair-growing hands.” They’ve made it not only their expertise but passion to help black women's hair reach its greatest potential in both strength and length through the DreamGirls Healthy Hair Program and product line. Their journey began in 2001 when Sharie moved from her hometown, Los Angeles to Sacramento to pursue a job in corporate America, only to find herself returning home after long workdays to do what she truly loved...hair. Tonya has always had a passion for helping women gain confidence and feel beautiful by doing their hair and with an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. She was the girl who did everyone’s hair before school dances and even casually on the weekends. In 2006, Tonya’s love for helping women feel beautiful through hair came full circle after Sharie presented her with a business venture of selling hair extensions. This quickly led to both sisters starting an apprenticeship to receive their cosmetology license and opening up the first DreamGirls salon which allowed them to get back to doing what they loved most- hair. The DreamGirls product line was released at the start of COVID-19 and helped provide hair care solutions to everyone at home who could no longer visit a salon. Since then, the product line expanded into curl and styling products as well as accessories for all hair types. DreamGirls products are color & straightener safe with UV protection and are infused with key ingredients that maintain and promote healthy hair growth such as Peppermint Oil, Pro Vitamin B5, Soybean Oil and Lavender while leaving out Parabens, Sulfates, and Sodium Chloride. Sharie and Tonya are also co-founders of Mixed Institute of Cosmetology & Barber, a school dedicated to teaching students how to style all hair textures. https://www.dghair.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dreamgirlshair/ https://www.instagram.com/healthyhaircaresystem/ https://www.instagram.com/mixededu/ https://www.instagram.com/mixedinstitutebarbers/ https://www.instagram.com/iamshariewilson/ https://www.instagram.com/hairbytonya/ More from TheTease: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/readthetease/ (readthetease) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kellyehlers/ / (KellyEhlers) Web: https://www.thetease.com (TheTease.com) Credits: Tease Talks is a Tease Media production.
