De Vierde Kruistocht begint als een heilige missie om Jeruzalem te heroveren. Maar door schulden, politieke intriges en machtsspelletjes verandert de expeditie in iets totaal anders. In 1204 bestormen kruisvaarders niet het Heilige Land, maar Constantinopel, de grootste christelijke stad ter wereld. Drie dagen lang wordt de stad geplunderd door hun eigen geloofsgenoten. Hoe kon een religieuze missie ontaarden in een van de grootste schandalen uit de middeleeuwen?
