Unbelievable? 19 Mar 2011 - Presuppositional apologetics round 2

6 months ago Sye Ten Bruggencate and atheist Paul Baird met to discuss Sye's presuppositional approach to proof of God. Sye claims that the fact Paul believes in laws of logic, maths, science and rationality prove that God exists.

The show was a popular download with many subsequent online debates. They are back - Paul brings 6 months experience of debate on the subject online with him. Sye responds to some criticisms we received of his approach, including whether one can prove full blown Christian belief from presuppositional apologetics.

For Sye see http://www.proofthatgodexists.org/

For Paul Baird http://patientandpersistant.blogspot.com/

To see some of the discussion threads on Presuppositional apologetics created by the last programme see:

Sye & James debate Presuppositional apologetics round 2

Presuppositional apologetics Sye & Paul Show Comments

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 31 July 2010 - Presuppositional apologetic proof of God Paul Baird and Sye TenBruggencate - the first time round

Unbelievable? 21 Aug 2010 - Debating Apologetics Online Christians Todd Pitner & Richard Morgan with atheist Paul Baird

Join the discussion at the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable and via Facebook and Twitter

Unbelievable? 12 Mar 2011 - Music & God

Music often evokes strong emotions in people. But is there more to the beauty and meaning we find in music than atheism allows? David Robertson contends that the joy and meaning we experience in music is a pointer beyond itself to an ultimate source of joy and meaning in God.

Gordon Livesey is a musician and an atheist. He contends that while we all experience emotions and meaning in music, it ultimately can be explained in scientific terms alone.

They play selections of music including Beethoven, Leonard Cohen, Sixpence None the Richer, The Manic Street Preachers and... wait for it.. the Weather Girls!

For David Robertson http://www.solas-cpc.co.uk

For Unbelievable? : The Conference www.premier.org.uk/answers

27 March 2010 - " Former atheists conversion experiences - Is it evidence for God? Unbelievable? 19 Feb 2011 - Are there many paths to God?

In an age of religious pluralism it can seem arrogant for Christians to claim they have "the truth" or the only means to salvation. So when Jesus said "no-one comes to the Father except through me" what did he mean? And what about those who have not heard the Gospel?

John Hick is a noted philosopher and theologian who is a proponent of a pluralist view of religion - that there is one light (God) but many lampshades (religious expressions).

Chris Sinkinson is a pastor and Bible tutor who has critiqued Hick's work. He says that pluralism empties Christianity of any content and in its own way disrespects other religions more than his own exclusivist stance.

For John Hick see http://www.johnhick.org.uk/

Chris Sinkinson is a tutor at Moorlands Bible College http://www.moorlands.ac.uk/home/about-us/staff-profiles.php

For his book "The Universe of Faiths" http://www.amazon.com/Universe-Faiths-C-Sinkinson/dp/1842271067

10 Oct 2009 - Jesus and the God of Israel Is the divinity of Jesus at odds with Jewish Monotheism? Unbelievable? 26 Feb 2011 - RE and indoctrination in education

The UK Government recently outlined a White Paper that threatens to demote Religious Education to a peripheral subject in the curriculum. More info on the campaign to have it reinstated here: http://www.reactcampaign.co.uk/

Mark Roques of Reality Bites regularly leads RE workshops for students - he says we need more engaging ways of teaching RE. He also claims there is a hidden curriculum in education indoctrinating students into an individualistic, secularist worldview.

Andrew Copson, CEO of the British Humanist Association also wants good RE teaching but disagrees with Mark's conclusions about hidden agendas in education causing consumerist attitudes among students.

They also debate whether an atheist worldview can account for our belief in reason and freewill.

For Mark Roques and Worldview RE resources see http://www.realitybites.org.uk

View the Reality Bites paper on secular indoctrination in education http://www.realitybites.org.uk/downloads/RealityBites_Education-Indoctrination-and-God.pdf

For Andrew Copson and the BHA see http://www.humanism.org.uk

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 29 Jan 2011 - Why do we value human life? Unbelievable? 12 Feb 2011 - Is the King James Version the best?

400 years on from the publication of the King James Version of the Bible, there is now a proliferation of translations available. Some Christians maintain that the KJV has never been surpassed for its style, authority and reliability.

James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries disputes the idea that the King James Version is the "only and best" version Christians should read. He says that there are translation problems as well as serious issues regarding the manuscripts the translators based it upon.

Revd Kyle Paisley, son of DUP leader Ian Paisley, defends the KJV as the best English version, despite any faults. He says that modern versions downplay key doctrines of the Christian faith and fail to live up to the prose of the KJV.

For James White visit http://www.aomin.org/

For his KJV resources http://www.aomin.org/catalog/index.php?cPath=53

For Kyle Paisley http://www.freepres.org/church.asp?oulton

For Kyle's sermons http://www.sermonaudio.com/source_detail.asp?sourceid=oultonbroad

3 Jan 2009 Bart Ehrman & Peter Williams - "Misquoting Jesus: Do we have the original writings of the New Testament?"

Unbelievable? 13 Mar 2010 - "Can we trust the doctrine of the Trinity?" Unbelievable? 22 Jan 2011 - Which Translation should we Trust?

To mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible Justin Brierley will be presenting a number of programmes looking at issues of Biblical reliability and interpretation in the coming year.

This week he asks "Which translation shoud we trust?" There are now many different English translations of scripture available.

Atheist Norman Hansen asks how Christians can base their beliefs on a book that is capable of being translated in so many ways. Don Horrocks of the Evangelical Alliance responds, arguing that the Bible is "God-breathed" even if people disagree about it stranslation in some areas.

They cover issues including the correct translation of the atonement of Jesus, translation of verses regarding homosexuality and disputed sections of scripture from early manuscripts.

For The Evangelical Alliance see http://www.eauk.org

For BibleFresh see http://www.biblefresh.com/

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 3 Jan 2009 Bart Ehrman & Peter Williams - "Misquoting Jesus: Do we have the original writings of the New Testament?"

Unbelievable? 18 Oct 2008 Why Should I believe in Jesus? Unbelievable? 15 Jan 2011 - Os Guinness & Mary Warnock debate religious freedoms

Os Guinness is an author, cultural critic and Christian apologist. He co-founded the Trinity Forum which "seeks to transform society through the transformation of leaders". Baroness Mary Warnock is a moral philosopher and atheist. She is a cross bench peer in the House of Lords and an influential voice arguing for liberalisation of euthanasia laws. Her book "Dishonest to God" argues that religious and theological issues should have no place in issues of public morality, covering euthanasia, assisted suicide, and abortion. At the time of recording Os Guinness was due to speak at the House of Lords on how Christian religious freedoms should be treated in a pluralistic society as set out in his new book "The Case for Civility". They discuss how we judge what is moral, euthanasia, gay adoption and more. The show was recorded in the robing chamber in the House of Lords. Unbelievable? 8 Jan 2011 - William Lane Craig reviews his debate with Dawkins

William Lane Craig is a philosopher, author and key defender of the Christian faith in debates around the world.

Although atheist Richard Dawkins had publicly said he will not debate Craig, he found himself on the same platform as him in November 2010. Dawkins was on an atheist team, Craig on a theist team as they debated "Does the Universe have a purpose?" at a Mexico TED-style event.

With extracts from the debate, William (Bill) Lane Craig chats to Justin about the circumstances of their encounter and why he believes Dawkins and the atheist team changed their tactics mid way, were ununified and failed to address the arguments that were presented.

To watch the full debate http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable/forum/topics/richard-dawkins-just-broke-his

For Bill's website http://www.reasonablefaith.org

For his article on "The absurdity of Life without God" http://www.premierradio.org.uk/shows/saturday/unbelievable/Resources/Atheism.aspx

For his book "Reasonable Faith" http://www.amazon.co.uk/Reasonable-Faith-William-Lane-Craig/dp/1433501155

For the Youtube Mix by Peter Byrom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UnEkydeDVQ&feature=related

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy

Unbelievable? 19 Jul 2008 American Masters of Apologetics Pt 2: William Lane Craig.

Unbelievable? 8 Nov 2008 Richard Dawkins & John Lennox's Oxford debate - a review with interviews and comment.

Join the discussion at the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable and via Facebook and Twitter

Unbelievable? 11 Dec 2010 - Islamic Blasphemy Law

Asia Bibi is the first Christian woman in Pakistan to be sentenced to death for allegedly blaspheming against Mohammed. In light of her case we discuss Pakistan's use of Islamic blasphemy law with Adnan Rashid of the Hittin Institute and Stuart Windsor and John Joseph of Christian Solidarity Worldwide. Stuart Windsor is director of CSW who supports those suffering persecution. John Joseph is a Christian human rights activist who has defended a number of people in Pakistan accused of blasphemy. They say Paikistan's blasphemy laws are used to settle personal disputes and are making life dangerous for Christians. Adnan Rashid is a Muslim apologist. He condemns abuses of the blasphemy law and mob justice in Pakistan but believes properly run Islamic states should be able to impose the death penalty on those who unrepentantly insult Mohamed. Unbelievable? 18 Dec 2010 - Islam & Dhimmitude

"The Third Choice" by Australian church pastor Mark Durie claims that Islam has a long history of oppressing those of other faiths under its power. Durie claims that when Islam conquered a nation its inhabitants could either convert, die or become "Dhimmi" - forced to pay money for their life and live in subservience to Muslims. He says that the doctrine lives on today.

Adnan Rashid of the Hittin Institute says that misrepresents the Dhimma pact. He claims that it was a peace treaty that led to mutual respect, defence and harmony for those who were non-Muslims and was part of a Golden Age of Islamic culture.

For Mark Durie and "The Third Choice" see http://www.markdurie.com/

For Adnan Rashid see http://www.hittininstitute.com/

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 11 Dec 2010 - Islamic Blasphemy Law" - Adnan Rashid, Stuart Windsor & John Joseph

Unbelievable? 16 Jun 2007 - Mosques in the UK: does society have anything to fear?

Join the discussion at the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

He takes questions from three skeptics on today's prgramme.

Stephen Lees has come to doubt his once-held faith. He asks whether Christians are obliged to believe the miracles of the Bible. Agnostic Stephen Pilcher asks how it can be fair for God to send people to hell who simply don't find enough evidence for his existence. Unbelievable? 13 Nov 2010 - Alvin Plantinga on the Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism

Richard Dawkins has said that "the theory of evolution made it possible to be an intellecually fulfilled atheist". But what if belief in evolution becomes irrational on atheist naturalism?

Alvin Plantinga is one of the foremost Christian philosophers in the world and is leading a resurgence of Christian philosophy in North America. He has formulated the "Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism" which proposes that if evolution is true then it provides a defeater for rational belief on a naturalistic framework. Can we trust our beliefs to be true if they have been produced by minds that are themselves the products of unguided evolution - a process that is geared towards producing beliefs for survival, not necessarily for truth?
?
He explains the force of the argument and debates its implications with Stephen Law, atheist and Senior lecturer in philosophy at Heythrop college, University of London. Stephen is also Provost of the Centre for Inquiry UK.

Plantinga also states where he stands on Intelligent Design, the problem of evil and a few other things besides.

For Alvin Plantinga see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_Plantinga for more links to Plantinga's work see http://philofreligion.homestead.com/plantingapage.html

For Stephen Law see http://stephenlaw.blogspot.com/ or http://www.cfilondon.org/

For more discussions visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this discussion you may also want to hear:

Unbelievable? 1 May 2010 Test of Faith: Do we need God, now that we have science? Unbelievable? 6 Nov 2010 - Ex-Gay and Gay-Affirming approaches to homosexuality

Both guests on today's show are Christians, both are gay, and both run ministries supporting Christians of homosexual orientation.

However a very different ethos underpins each. The True Freedom Trust, run by Jonathan Berry believes that Christians with homosexual orientation should abstain from sexual practise. Courage, run by Jeremy Marks accepts committed same-sex relationships between Christians.

Courage adopted its new position in 2001. Jeremy explains why, and Jonathan responds. Sharing their own stories, they debate the best way of supporting gay Christians and why they differ on Biblical teachings about homosexuality

For True Freedom Trust http://www.truefreedomtrust.co.uk/

For Courage http://www.courage.org.uk/

For more discussions visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this discussion you may also want to hear:

Unbelievable? 29 May 2010 - This first show addresses the main scriptural passages that relate to homosexuality.

Unbelievable? 5 Jun 2010 - Homosexuality and the Church - This second show addresses whether the church is homophobic in its attitude towards gay people

Join the debate at the "Unbelievable?" group of the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Unbelievable? 23 Oct 2010 - Darwin's Black Box - Michael Behe & Keith Fox debate Intelligent Design

Michael Behe is professor of biochemistry at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania and the founder of the modern Intelligent Design movement. His book "Darwin's Black Box" ignited the controversy 14 years ago when it claimed that certain molecular machines and biological processes are "irreducibly complex" and cannot be explained by Darwinian evolution.

His new book "The Edge of Evolution" takes his conclusions further, arguing that the Darwinian processes of random mutation and natural selection are incapable of producing the variation and complexity we see in most of life.

So can we conclude that life was intelligently designed by a creator?

Keith Fox is Professor of biochemistry at the University of Southampton and chairman of Christians in Science. As a theistic evolutionist he believes that Evolution is the best explanation going for the complexity we see and that ID is a blind scientific alley and theologically unappealing to boot.

They debate whether micromachines in the cell such as the "bacterial flagellum" could have evolved by a Darwinian process of evolution. When inference to design is and isn't acceptable in science. Whether random mutation can mathematically stack up to complex life, and whether God is reduced to a divine "tinkerer" by ID.

For Michael Behe see http://www.lehigh.edu/~inbios/faculty/behe.html or http://www.darwinordesign.org.uk/

For Keith Fox see http://www.cis.org.uk/resources/interviews/keith-fox and for the CIS conference 2010 http://www.cis.org.uk/

For more debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy

Unbelievable? 20 Mar 2010 - Expelled" live audience debate at Imperial College London - Susan Blackmore, Steve Fuller, Keith Fox & Alastair Noble

Unbelievable? 16 Jan 2010 - "Expelled" the Movie - Intelligent Design theorist Stephen Meyer vs. Atheist scientist Peter Atkins debate Intelligent Design

Unbelievable? 2 Jan 2010 - Is there design in biology? Unbelievable? 30 Oct 2010 - The Apologetics of CS Lewis

C.S. Lewis was one of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th Century and remains so today. Many are familiar with his Narnia stories, but he was also a populariser of Christian apologetics, and continues to be the first place that many encounter the key arguments for Christian faith.

60 years on from when they were written, are his arguments for God and Christ still compelling? We look at Lewis' Natural Law argument for God in "Mere Christianity", his Argument from Reason in "Miracles" and his classic 'Trilemma' - Jesus is either a liar, lunatic, or Lord.

Michael Ward is Chaplain of St. Peter's College, Oxford and a research fellow at the Independent Institute. He is a leading authority on CS Lewis. His books "Planet Narnia" and "The Narnia Code" unearthed a hidden dimension to the Narnia chronicles. He also lectures on the apologetics of C.S. Lewis.

Dan Barker is a US atheist and heads up the Freedom From Religion Foundation. As a Christian he read "Mere Christianity" but on re-reading it as an atheist found it unconvincing.

They debate the faith, philosophy and apologeics of CS Lewis.

For Michael Ward see http://www.planetnarnia.com/ or http://www.independent.org/aboutus/person_detail.asp?id=1333

For the new book "The Narnia Code" http://www.amazon.com/Narnia-Code-Lewis-Secret-Heavens/dp/1414339658/ref=pd_sim_b_3

For Dan Barker and his book "Godless" see http://www.ffrf.org/

For more Christian/non Christian discussions visit www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast or via itunes

If you enjoyed this discussion try these:

Unbelievable? 6 Jun 2009 Narnia & CS Lewis - a skeptic and Christian discuss - Michael Ward & Laura Miller

Unbelievable? 5 Dec 2009 - Are we better off free from religion? Unbelievable? 16 Oct 2010 - Philosophers Debate The Moral Argument for God

Torturing children for fun - is that absolutely wrong?

The Moral Argument for God states that there are such things as objective moral facts, and that objective moral facts must have an immaterial source - namely God. Therefore God Exists... Simple right?

However, atheist Cambridge Philosopher Arif Ahmed disagrees with the first two premises. He debates with New Zealand's Christian philosopher Glenn People's on whether the argument proves the existence of God.

So, are moral beliefs nothing more than our "preferences"? What do we do with the intuition that certain things are absolutely wrong? Are atheists who affirm moral facts but deny God, being inconsistent?

For Glenn People's blog visit http://www.beretta-online.com/wordpress/

For Arif Ahmed see http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/teaching_staff/ahmed/ahmed_index.html

For more Christian/non Christian debates and discussions visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 13 Jun 2009 The Moral Argument For God - Atheist Paul Orton & Christian David Robertson

Unbelievable? 7 Mar 2009 "The Reason for God" - Pastor Timothy Keller & Atheist Norman Bacrac

To join the discussion at the Premier Community visit http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Unbelievable? 2 Oct 2010 - The New Atheism - Alister McGrath & Caspar Melville

Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett & Sam Harris are all figures at the vanguard of the "New Atheism". The books have sold well, but where does this form of confrontational and outspoken atheism have to go next?

Alister McGrath is Theology professor at Kings College London and regularly speaks and writes against Atheism. He says that there's nothing "new" about New Atheism and that it exhibits all the signs of being a religious form of belief itself.

Caspar Melville is editor of the UK's New Humanist magazine. He says that "New Atheism" has been good for business and is provoking a debate that needs to be had.

They debate whether there is a historical naivety to the movement, Dawkins' claim that "I just believe in one less god than you" and much more besides.

For Alister McGrath see http://users.ox.ac.uk/~mcgrath/

For Caspar Melville see http://www.newhumanist.org.uk/

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast at http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 14 Nov 2009 - Alister McGrath on Atheism, theology and defending the faith

Unbelievable? 12 Dec 2009 Richard Dawkins debate on "Atheism is the New Fundamentalism" - review with interviews

Join the discussion at the Unbelievable? group of the Premier Community. http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Unbelievable? 18 Sep 2010 - Roman Catholicism - Is the Papacy Biblical?

As Pope Benedict XVI undertakes a four day tour of Britain we explore the theology of the Roman Catholic Church.

What is the Catholic view of the role of the Pope? How do they ground his authority as head of the church in Scripture? Is he God's representative or mediator on earth? What does it mean to speak of his "infallible" statements? Is Catholic tradition a part of God's revelation alongside scripture?

William Johnston was ordained in the Anglican Church before going "over to Rome" because of a felt lack of authority in the Anglican church. He says the Pope's role as ultimate arbiter of authority in the church is essential.

Duncan Boyd of the Protestant Truth Society believes Roman Catholicism is a false religion and the Pope is a heretic. He argues that the role of the Pope is unscriptural along with many of the doctrines of the Catholic church.

For more on Roman Catholic teaching see http://www.catholicchurch.org.uk/Catholic-Church/what_does_the_catholic_church_teach/catechism

For William Johnstone http://www.catholicvoices.org.uk/team

For the Protestant Truth Society see http://www.protestant-truth.org/

For Duncan Boyd http://protestant-truth.org/aboutus/duncan_boyd.html

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast at http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 11 Sep 2010 - "Is the Catholic Church a force for Good or Evil?" - Catholic Peter D Williams & Humanist Andrew Copson

Unbelievable? 16 May 2009 - A Response to Angels & Demons - Ged Clapson, Susan Fani, David Wilkinson & Robert Stovold

Join the debate at the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

With the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the UK, some are protesting that his visit should not be sponsored by the State. Unbelievable? 04 Sep 2010 - Christian Physicalism: Do we have a soul?

Christians have traditionally held that humans comprise two things - a body and a soul. Christian Philosophers have written in defence of the soul against a reductive atheism that claims we are material beings alone.

But a new movement in Christian philosophy claims that the atheists are correct, at least when it comes to humans.

Glenn Peoples is a Christian philosopher who subscribes to physicalism - that humans are only physical and they have no immaterial soul. He explains how he arrived at that view from Scripture and how he defends it philosophically, without giving up an evangelical Christian view.

Prof John Haldane is a Christian philosopher at St Andrews University in Scotland. He believes that Christian faith and Philosophy bear witness to an immaterial soul - though his "Thomistic" view defends it differently to the prevailing trend.

For Glenn Peoples Blog visit http://www.beretta-online.com/wordpress/

For John Haldane see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~jjh1/

For John's Book "Reasonable Faith" see http://www.amazon.com/Reasonable-Faith-John-Haldane/dp/0415430240/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1

For more Christian/non Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast at http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 17 Jul 2010 - Wired for God? Unbelievable? 28 Aug 2010 - The Fall & Original Sin

Peter Byrom says he is "very nearly" convinced of Christianity. Having dallied with an atheist perspective he now rejects many of those arguments. However one area of theology he doesn't feel is clear is the question of Adam and Eve and the Fall.

Who were Adam and Eve - a historical couple or a metaphor for the human condition? Why did their rebellion impact the whole of humanity? How can we reconcile original sin with human free will?

Peter Sanlon is a lecturer in theology at Oakhill College. He responds to the theology. Prof Norman Nevin is Emeritus professor of Medical Genetics at Queens University Belfast. He responds to scientific aspects of the discussion.

For Peter Sanlon see http://grace-city.blogspot.com/ or http://www.oakhill.ac.uk/

Norman Nevin is the Editor of "Should Christians Embrace Evolution?" http://www.ivpbooks.com/9781844744060

To see Peter Byrom quiz Dawkins on why he won't debate William Lane Craig http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFamS4RGE_A

Peter Byrom is a member of the Premier Community - you can interact with the show there too http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

1 Aug 2009 - Debating doctrine - James White and Roger & Faith Forster debate predestination

Unbelievable? 29 Nov 2008 Creation or Evolution - do we have to choose?
The place where many Christians engage with atheists about belief is online. But why do both sides turn up to engage in the conversation, and what is the fruit?

Todd Pitner and Richard Morgan are adult converts to Christianity who often engage in apologetics debate online. They meet face to face with Paul Baird - one of the many atheists they debate online.

All three are members of the Premier Community where apologetics debate is common at the "Unbelievable?" group http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

They discuss the different style, tactics and motives of those who participate and whether atheists or Christians are prepared to change their mind.

For Todd's apologetics website see http://www.iloveatheists.com/

For Richard's musical talents see http://www.myspace.com/morgansoriginals

For Paul Baird's new blog http://patientandpersistant.blogspot.com/

For more Christian/non Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast at http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 27 Mar 2010 - Former atheists conversion experiences - Is it evidence for God? Unbelievable? 14 Aug 2010 - Assisted dying & euthanasia debate

Should people suffering from terminal illness or in terrible pain be allowed to take their own life? Should doctors help them?

British law currently forbids it but there are voices asking for a change. At the forefront is "Dignity in Dying" whose Chief-Executive Sarah Wootton argues that allowing people to choose when and how they die is an extension of personal liberty.

Revd George Pitcher is an Anglican priest. He argues in his new book "A Time To Live - the argument against euthanasia and assisted dying", that human dignity requires us to respect human life.

Both the legal and Christian ramifications are discussed as they are joined by Revd Paul Badham, also an ordained Anglican who believes that assisted-dying is a moral option.

For George Pitcher's book "A Time to Live" see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Time-Live-Against-Euthanasia-Assisted/dp/1854249878/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281622100&sr=1-1

For Paul Badham's book "Is there a Christian case for Assisted dying?" see http://www.amazon.co.uk/There-Christian-Case-Assisted-Dying/dp/0281059195

For Dignity in Dying see http://www.dignityindying.org.uk/

For an anti-euthanasia viewpoint see http://www.carenotkilling.org.uk/

For more Christian/non Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast at http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 25 Apr 2009 Euthanasia - Should it be legalised? Unbelievable? 7 Aug 2010 - An evangelical vs. liberal view of the Resurrection

The resurrection of Christ is fundamental to the Christian faith. However, not all Christians agree on how it should be interpreted.

Adrian Warnock is a church leader, blogger and author. His book "Raised with Christ" aims to put the resurrection of Jesus back at the centre of all Christian theology. He says that acceptance of the doctrine of the physical resurrection of Jesus is fundamental to being a Christian.

Jonathan Clatworthy of "Modern Church" represents a liberal view. He says that the Bible supports a merely "spiritual" resurrection and that a thoughtful theology requires such a view.

They debate the implications of the Biblical interpretation, resurrection of the dead, and knowing the 'power' of the resurrection from their different perspectives.

For Adrian's popular blog and the book see http://adrianwarnock.com/

For Jonathan Clatworthy and "Modern Church" see http://www.modchurchunion.org/

For more Christian/non Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast at http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 12 Jul 2008 - American Masters of Apologetics Pt 1: Gary Habermas.

Unbelievable? 11 Apr 2009 - Atheist Steven Carr & Canon Michael Cole - Did Jesus Rise from the dead? Unbelievable? 31 Jul 2010 - Presuppositional apologetic proof of God

"Arguing against God's existence is on a par with arguing against air, breathing it all the while". So says the website of Sye TenBrugencatte who believes that Christians need to rediscover the power of 'presuppositional apologetics'.

Our use of the laws of logic, mathematics, science and morality cannot be accounted for unless we believe in a God who guarantees our perceptions and reasoning is trustworthy in the first place.

Paul Baird describes himself as a "freethinker". He debates whether he is obliged to believe in God when faced by Sye who argues that atheists are effectively "suppressing" the truth of God that is self evident - as described in Romans Ch 1.

Sye's website is http://www.proofthatgodexists.org/

Paul Baird and Sye TenBruggencate are both online members of the "Unbelievable?" Unbelievable? 24 Jul 2010 - Psychology of religion

Is belief in the supernatural inherent from birth? Is Christianity a psychological crutch or a path to emotional wholeness? Is God belief simply a result of evolution? Would it make belief untrue if it were?

These and other questions are discussed by atheist psychological therapist Martyn Frame and Christian tutor of psychology of religion Revd Dr Joanna Collicut McGrath.

Martyn believes that religious belief can be given a psychological evolutionary explanation that precludes need for belief in God. Joanna argues that such theories are sketchy at best and that humanity's religious longings can't be rationalised so easily.

For Joanna Collicut McGrath see http://www.heythrop.ac.uk/about-us/college-staff/academic-staff/dr-joanna-collicutt.html

"The Dawkins Delusion" co-authored with her husband Alister Mcgrath can be found on Amazon here

Martyn Frame's profile page at the Premier Community http://premiercommunity.ning.com/profile/MartynFrame?xg_source=activity

24 Apr 2010 - "Grill a Christian" show - four atheists challenge David Robertson with their objections to faith

Unbelievable? 19 Dec 2009 - What does Science Tell us about God?" - Atheist scientist Lewis Wolpert debates believing scientist Russell Cowburn

Join the discussion at the Unbelievable? group of the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Unbelievable? 17 Jul 2010 - Wired for God? The Biology of Spiritual Experience

From shamanism, hallucenogenic drugs, out-of-body experiences, to being "filled with the Spirit". Christian author and barrister Charles Foster draws on these and many more to examine the biological evidence of what happens when people claim supernatural experiences.

Is there room left for God? Yes, says Foster, whose own experience of the Holy Spirit led him to research why our brains seem to be wired for God to communicate with us.

Susan Blackmore is an atheist and Professor of Psychology. She reveals how her own 'Out of Body Experience' as a student led to research that ultimately convinced her that no "supernatural" activity is needed to account for these type of phenomena.

They debate the issues, including whether Consciousness itself can be given a naturalistic explanation.

For Charles Foster see http://www.charlesfoster.co.uk/

To buy "Wired for God?" visit http://www.amazon.co.uk or click here

For Sue Blackmore see http://www.susanblackmore.co.uk/

To buy "Consciousness: An introduction" visit http://www.amazon.co.uk or click here

10 Jul 2010 - Was Saint Paul mentally ill & the proponent of a hoax religion?

'B Strong' is a former Christian who lost his faith after examining the claims of the Bible. It also claims Jesus is one of the greatest hoaxes of history.

John Tancock (JT) is a Welsh church leader and apologist. He engages the sceptical arguments on Paul and Jesus.
The first of two shows featuring atheist US physicist Victor Stenger, author of NY Times bestseller "God: The failed Hypothesis".

Stenger claims that Christian belief has been a block to science historically and that science has shown the Universe to look "Exactly as it would if there were no God".

Steve Fuller is Professor of Sociology at Warwick University. He takes issue with the current wave of scientific atheism and in his new book "Science" (The Art of Living Series, Acumen) says that science can't be done without the concept of God at its heart.

For Victor Stenger see http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/VWeb/Home.html

To buy the book "God: the failed hypothesis" http://www.amazon.co.uk/God-Failed-Hypothesis-Science-Shows/dp/1591024811

For Steve Fuller see http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/sociology/staff/academicstaff/sfuller/fullers_index

For "Science (Art of Living)" http://www.amazon.co.uk/Science-Art-Living-Steve-Fuller/dp/1844652041

For more Christian/non-Christian discussion shows visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievableor get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

Unbelievable? 6 Feb 2010 - Do we need God to Do Science? Unbelievable? 19 Jun 2010 - Does the Bible condone slavery?

The Bible is often criticised for either supporting or not condemning the institution of slavery. So how should we treat portions of Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments that relate to slavery? Why does the Old Testament contain laws regarding the treatment of slaves? Does Paul condemn or affirm the institution?

Bob Price is a former US church minister whose doubts about the Bible led him to ultimately reject evangelical Christian faith. He says that the Bible is a book that reflects the time it was written in. Slavery was acceptable and the early Christians regrettably followed suit, and did not challenge the prevailing status quo.

David Instone-Brewer is a New Testament Scholar at Tyndale House, Cambridge. He says that, in its cultural context, the Bible goes as far as it can towards an anti-slavery message and that Christians have been at the forefront of anti-slavery movements.

For Bob Price see http://www.robertmprice.mindvendor.com/

For David Instone-Brewer see http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/index.php?page=david-instone-brewer

For his Visual Sermons see http://www.visualsermons.co.uk/

For more Christian/non-Christian debates visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 20 Feb 2010 - "Is Christianity Good for us?" Unbelievable? 12 Jun 2010 - The Jesus Discovery

Dr Adam Bradford believes he has discovered a significant new insight into Jesus Christ. In "The Jesus Discovery" he explains why he believes that Jesus was not an unschooled peasant preacher, as many depict him. Instead, he claims that Jesus came from a middle class family and would have been schooled in Jerusalem's top school of Rabbis. This, he says, explains how the religious authorities treated him before and after his trial.

Is there evidence for this view, and what difference would it make if it were true?

New Testament Scholar David Instone-Brewer debates the evidence with Adam.

For "The Jesus Discovery" website http://www.thejesusdiscovery.com/

To order the book http://www.templehouse-publishing.com/books.htm

For David Instone-Brewer see http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/index.php?page=david-instone-brewer

For his work on divorce & remarriage see http://www.instonebrewer.com/divorceremarriage/

For more Christian theological debates visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 13 Feb 2010 - "What did Jesus really say about Divorce and remarriage?" - David Instone-Brewer debates Andrew Cornes

Unbelievable? 18 Oct 2008 - Why Should I believe in Jesus? Unbelievable? 5 Jun 2010 - Homosexuality and the church

In response to listener requests Justin hosts two shows dealing with Homosexuality and Christian faith.
This second show addresses whether the church is homophobic in its attitude towards gay people. Would a gay person feel welcome at an evangelical church? Should practising gays be allowed to become church members or receive communion? Has the church focussed on the gay issue to the exclusion of all other sins?

Mike Dark of the organisation "Accepting Evangelicals" is a gay Christian in a same sex relationship. He says he experienced rejection and homophobia in his church when he "came out" as gay, but has since found a church where same sex relationships are welcomed.

John Richardson (who blogs as the Ugley Vicar) is part of the conservative-evangelical Anglican group Reform. He believes there is a line to be drawn when it comes to the church condoning same sex activity among its members.

Martin Hallett is the former director of The True Freedom Trust. As a Christian of homosexual orientation he chooses to remain celibate, believing the Bible does not condone same sex activity. But he says the church is often guilty of homophobia too.

For Mike Dark see http://www.acceptingevangelicals.org/

For John Richardson see http://ugleyvicar.blogspot.com/ or http://www.reform.org.uk/

For Martin Hallett see http://www.truefreedomtrust.co.uk/

For more Christian theological debates visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 22 Aug 2009 - "Does religion make people unhappy?" - Christian Apologist Tom Price & Atheist Barry Duke

Unbelievable? 18 Apr 2009 - Peter Kerridge, Terry Sanderson and Andrea Williams - "I am A Christian" - are Christians being marginalised in society?

Join the debate at the Unbelievable? group of the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Unbelievable? 29 May 2010 - Homosexuality and the Bible

In response to listener requests Justin hosts two shows dealing with Homosexuality and Christian faith.

This first show addresses the main scriptural passages that relate to homosexuality. Are the prohibitions against same sex acts in the Old Testament relevant to today? What is the correct interpretation of the apostle Paul's writing on "homosexual offenders" in Romans, Corinthians and elsewhere? Were Jonathan and King David gay lovers?

Mike Dark of the organisation "Accepting Evangelicals" is a gay Christian in a same sex relationship. He believes that Old and New Testament prohibitions on homosexuality need to be understood in light of their cultural context and that they do not preclude faithful, loving same sex relationships today.

John Richardson (who blogs as the Ugley Vicar) is part of the conservative-evangelical Anglican group Reform. He believes the remit of scripture clearly stands against all forms of homosexual behaviour.

Jeremy Marks of the gay affirming Christian support organisation "Courage UK" explains why they had a radical change of mind on same sex relationships in 2000.

For Mike Dark see http://www.acceptingevangelicals.org/

For John Richardson see http://ugleyvicar.blogspot.com/ or http://www.reform.org.uk/

For Jeremy Marks see http://www.courage.org.uk/

For more Christian theological debates visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via Itunes

If you enjoyed today's programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 24 Apr 2010 - "Grill a Christian" show - four atheists challenge David Robertson with their objections to faith

Unbelievable? 13 Feb 2010 - "What did Jesus really say about Divorce and remarriage?" - David Instone-Brewer debates Andrew Cornes

Join the discussion at the Unbelievable? group of the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Unbelievable? 22 May 2010 - Sex outside Marriage debate

Evangelical Christians hold that sexual relations outside of marriage are against Biblical mandate and have negative moral and social consequences.

In modern society, as marriage becomes less common and most people are sexually active from their teens, is this belief outmoded and irrelevant?

Sue Meyer describes herself as an "Atheist freethinking feminist". She claims that Christian marriage has historically been used as a way of subjugating women. She says that the modern climate where people are at liberty to have sex with who they want, when they want is a welcome change.

Faith Forster is one of the founders of the Ichthus Christian Fellowship network of churches in the UK. She says that the Biblical principle of keeping sex within the marriage bond is given for the good of both individuals and society.

For Faith Forster visit http://www.ichthus.org.uk/

You can hear more Christian/non-Christian debate at http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 19 Jan 2008 Abortion - pro-life vs. pro-choice.

Unbelievable? 30 Jun 2007 - Are evangelical Christians too exclusive?

Join the discussion at the Unbelievable? group of the Premier Community http://www.premiercommunity.org.uk/group/unbelievable

Peter Hitchens vs. Adam Rutherford - "The Rage Against God"

Peter Hitchens is a writer and regular columnist for the Mail on Sunday. Unlike his atheist brother Christopher, Peter is a committed Christian having himself been an atheist in younger years.

His new book "The Rage Against God" challenges the anti-theism of his brother and the 'new atheism', taking as its starting point a debate they both took part in two years ago.

He debates with atheist Adam Rutherford, a scientific broadcaster and writer, on whether society can function without a God-given moral compass at its centre. They cover issues such as faith, secularism, the church, atheist states and abortion in this wide ranging discussion.

You can buy "The Rage against God" at http://premier.org.uk/shop

For Peter Hitchens' Blog see http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/

For Adam Rutherford see http://adamrutherford.com/

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or Get the MP3 podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or Via Itunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy

Unbelievable? 4 Jul 2009 - Peter Hitchens & Ibrahim Mogra debate "Is Islam or Christianity the best future for Britain?"

Unbelievable? 19 Sep 2009 - "Would Europe be better off as an atheistic or Christian society?" Unbelievable? 8 May 2010 - Philip Pullman on the historical Jesus

"The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ" is the latest book from the pen of prominent atheist author Philip Pullman. It re-imagines the story of Jesus as the story of two twins - one called Jesus, the other Christ. It is the twin Christ who writes the history of Jesus, turning him into the God-man of the Gospels.

Philip Pullman joins Justin Brierley to discuss whether we should believe the Biblical stories of Jesus as historical fact or whether myth and invention are inevitable in the 2000 year old Gospel accounts.

Christian journalist Martin Saunders engages Pullman on his view of the Church and his scepticism of the miraculous while Bible Scholar Anthony McRoy challenges Pullman's view that the Gospels are the product of the mythologising and interpretation of its historical core. He particularly takes issue with Pullman's recasting of the resurrection as a fabricated trick to create the foundation of the future church.

For "The book of Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ" see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Jesus-Scoundrel-Christ-Myths/dp/1847678254

For a further debate between Philip Pullman and Rt Revd Lord Richard Harries courtesy of English Pen go to http://www.premierradio.org.uk/shows/saturday/unbelievable/features.aspx

For Philip Pullman see http://www.philip-pullman.com/

Martin Saunders is a contributor to Christianity Magazine and reviews the book in their June edition http://www.christianitymagazine.co.uk/

For Anthony McRoy on the historical Jesus see http://www.bethinking.org/bible-jesus/introductory/debunking-channel-4s-conspiracy-theory.htm

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 3 Jan 2009 Bart Ehrman & Peter Williams - "Misquoting Jesus: Do we have the original writings of the New Testament?"

Unbelievable? 29 Aug 2009 - and the Eyewitnesses part 1 : Richard Bauckham and James Crossley

Unbelievable? 6 Sep 2008 Christianity on trial pt 1: Can I trust the Bible? Renowned astrophysicist Paul Davies chats to Oxford Professor of Mathematics John Lennox.

A popular science author, Davies is also the Chair of the SETI post detection task force. His latest book "The Eerie Silence" which marks SETI's 50th anniversary examines the likelihood of the universe producing life elsewhere.

John Lennox is a Christian Mathematician and philosopher. He is the author of "God's Undertaker: has science buried God?" and has debated Richard Dawkins on several occasions.

Davies' work on the fine tuning of the universe for life has been sympathetic to theism. In this programme Lennox challenges Davies to look to design not just in cosmology but in the cell. They also chat about what the discovery of ET would mean for Christian theology.

For Paul Davies see http://cosmos.asu.edu/

For his book "The Eerie Silence" click here

For John Lennox see http://johnlennox.org/

For more Christian/non-Christian debate visit http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable or get the podcast http://ondemand.premier.org.uk/unbelievable/AudioFeed.aspx or via iTunes

If you enjoyed this programme you may also enjoy:

Unbelievable? 8 Nov 2008 Dawkins & John Lennox's Oxford debate - a review with interviews and comment.

Unbelievable? 14 Mar 2009 Tuning of the Universe - is it evidence of God?
