<p>Matthew and Luke both tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The stories share some details in common but also vary in others. Where did they get their information from, and should we regard them as historical or merely "theological"?</p> <p>Stephen Thornton is a liberal Bible tutor who believes that none of the details of the Christmas story are historically true. Rather, stories of the virgin conception, the shepherds, the wise men etc contain "deeper meanings" that were written down as a "teaching aid" to the early church.</p> <p>Ben Witherington III is New Testament professor at Asbury Theological Seminary. <p>Richard Carrier is the world's foremost proponent of the "mythicist" view of Jesus - that he never actually existed as a historical person.</p> <p>He explains his theory that St. Paul only ever spoke of Jesus in the spiritual realm and that the Gospels are "extended parables".</p> <p>Mark Goodacre is NT professor at Duke University. <p>In the first of two shows Justin is joined by Tim Mawson, the Oxford philosopher whose paper "Praying to Stop Being an Atheist" inspired the Atheist Prayer Experiment.</p> <p>71 atheists and agnostics signed up to the experiment, comitting to pray for God to reveal himself to them over 40 days. He says that, on the balance of probabilities, theism offers a better explanation of life and the Universe than atheism.</p> <p>James Croft works with the Harvard humanist community. This week focusses on the effect upon users of pornography.</p> <p>Peter Watts is from Living Waters, a Christian ministry helping those affected by sexual issues. His videos are popular but his approach earns him both praise and criticism from fellow atheists.</p> <p>David Robertson is Pastor of St Peter's Free Church, Dundee and director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity. He often interacts with atheists online and has earned himself the title "the wee flea" for his provocative interactions on the Dawkins website.</p> <p>David and Mike debate whether Mike's approach is a helpful one. David accuses Mike of emotional atheism and an incoherent view of Christianity.
