Ep 106Debating the Statement on Social Justice – Jarrod McKenna & James White

Are ‘social justice warriors’ a danger to the Gospel? In August 2018 a group of conservative Christians in the USA, led by John MacArthur, released The Statement On Social Justice And The Gospel to take a stand against the church being influenced by “questionable sociological, psychological, and political theories presently permeating our culture”. Some of the affirmations and denials in the document caused controversy among both evangelicals and progressives for its statements on political activism and racism.

James White of Alpha and Omega ministries, was one of the framers of the document and a key signatory. He debates the Statement with Australian pastor and justice activist Jarrod McKenna, founder of Common Grace, on whether the concepts of privilege, intersectionality and identity politics should have any part to play in the Gospel.

For the Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel: https://statementonsocialjustice.com

For Jarrod McKenna: https://www.commongrace.org.au/jarrodmckenna/

For James White: https://www.aomin.org

Buy the Unbelievable? Ep 100Halloween and horror films - Peter Laws & Michael Cummins

Ep 96Hitchens vs Hitchens debate on War and God - podcast special

In this podcast special edition of the show Justin broadcasts the 2008 public debate between Christopher Hitchens and his brother Peter Hitchens. In contrast his journalist brother Peter Hitchens is a Christian who converted from atheism in his adult years. In this classic public debate from 2008, hosted by the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University, both men debate the Iraq war, the case for God and respond to questions from the 1,400 strong audience. Ep 92Can Islam overcome sexism and violence? Ed Husain vs Beth Grove

Ed Husain was once a Muslim extremist. Today he is still a Muslim but says the Islam he once practised is a distorted version of the faith. Ep 88Theistic evolution, biology and purpose – Denis Alexander & Perry Marshall (plus Dominic Done)

Dr Denis Alexander is a notable British proponent of theistic evolution – the view that Christianity and Darwinian evolution are perfectly compatible. Ep 82Steven Pinker vs Nick Spencer: Have science, reason & humanism replaced faith?

In the second Big Conversation episode, Justin is joined by Harvard professor of psychology Steven Pinker and Nick Spencer of Christian think-tank Theos.

They debate the future of humanity in relation to Pinker’s recent book ‘Enlightenment Now’, addressing his claim that science, reason and humanism are the drivers of progress in the world, rather than religion. Ep 81Is there scientific evidence for Old Testament miracles? Colin Humphreys & Bob Price

Sir Colin Humphreys is a Cambridge scientist with an interest in Biblical studies. His book ‘The Miracles of Exodus: A Scientist's Discovery of the Extraordinary Natural Causes of the Biblical Stories’ makes the case that events like the parting of the Red Sea, the stopping of the Jordan river and the sun standing still in Joshua all have a basis in scientific facts and natural causes. The miracle is in the timing of the events by God.

Sceptical Bible scholar Bob Price debates Humphreys on these Old Testament events and whether his research proves the credible historicity of the Biblical accounts, and whether his approach runs the risk of eliminating the supernatural from the Bible.

For Colin Humphreys: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Miracles-Exodus-Scientists-Discovery-Extraordinary/dp/0060582731

For Bob Price: http://robertmprice.mindvendor.com/

For Big Conversation videos, updates and bonus content sign up: http://www.thebigconversation.show

Get signed copies of Unbelievable? the book and audiobook: www.unbelievablebook.co.uk

For more faith debates visit http://www.premierchristianradio.com/Shows/Saturday/Unbelievable

Join the conversation: Facebook and Twitter

Get the MP3 Podcast of Unbelievable? Ep 79Where did the laws of nature come from? Hugh Ross vs Peter Atkins

Justin is joined by Christian astrophysicist Hugh Ross, founder of Reasons to Believe, and atheist scientist Peter Atkins of Oxford University, to debate whether the laws of nature came from ‘nothing’ or from God.

Peter Atkins’ new book ‘Conjuring The Universe: The Origins of the Laws of Nature’ claims that the Universe and it’s laws reflect the ‘nothing’ from whence they came. Hugh Ross has recently released a 4th edition of ‘The Cosmos and the Creator’ and explains why he believes the scientific evidence is continually growing for a creator of the universe and its life-permitting laws.

For ‘Conjuring The Universe’: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/conjuring-the-universe-9780198813378

For ‘The Creator and the Cosmos’: https://shop.reasons.org/product/599/creator-and-the-cosmos-fourth-edition

For The Big Conversation series https://www.thebigconversation.show

Get signed copies of Unbelievable? the book and audiobook: http://www.unbelievablebook.co.uk

For more faith debates visit http://www.premierchristianradio.com/Shows/Saturday/Unbelievable

Join the conversation: Facebook and Twitter

Get the MP3 Podcast of Unbelievable? Ep 76Is John’s Gospel historically accurate? Lydia McGrew & Craig Evans debate

Christian philosopher Lydia McGrew has recently accused evangelical scholars such as Mike Licona and Craig Evans, of undermining the historical reliability of John’s gospel. She cites Evans’ interactions with Bart Ehrman in debate as giving away too much ground to a sceptical view.

New Testament scholar Craig Evans defends his view that John’s gospel is historically reliable but also includes theological development by the Johannine community who knew Jesus’ teaching. Also, at the end of today’s show, Jonny Somerville, creator of the NUA film series talks about its impact on young people investigating Christianity.

For Lydia McGrew’s blog http://lydiaswebpage.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/jesus-never-said-i-am-statements.html

For Craig Evans https://www.craigaevans.com/

For the NUA film series: https://nuafilmseries.org/

Get signed copies of Unbelievable? the book and audiobook: www.unbelievablebook.co.uk

Get Unbelievable? the Conference 2017 DVD/CD & Digital Download: http://www.premier.org.uk/shop

For more faith debates visit http://www.premierchristianradio.com/Shows/Saturday/Unbelievable

Join the conversation: Facebook and Twitter

Get the MP3 Podcast of Unbelievable? Ep 75Is Christianity sexist? Paula Gooder & Francesca Stavrakopoulou

New Testament scholar Paula Gooder joins Justin to talk about her new book ‘Phoebe: A Story’ a fictional account of the life of the woman that St Paul entrusted with delivering his letter to the Romans. But have the ensuing centuries lost sight of the role of women such as Phoebe in the early church?

Sceptical Bible scholar Francesca Stavrakopoulou joins Paula to discuss whether Christianity is inherently patriarchal and sexist. They debate passages such as 1 Timothy 2: 11-12 and how much St Paul’s attitude toward women leaders in the early church contrasted with the prevailing culture.

For ‘Phoebe’ by Paula Gooder https://www.hodder.co.uk/books/detail.page?isbn=9781473669727

For Francesca Stavrakopoulou http://humanities.exeter.ac.uk/theology/staff/stavrakopoulou/

For Unbelievable? the Conference 2018: http://www.premier.org.uk/justask

Get signed copies of Unbelievable? the book and audiobook: www.unbelievablebook.co.uk

Get Unbelievable? the Conference 2017 DVD/CD & Digital Download: http://www.premier.org.uk/shop

For more faith debates visit http://www.premierchristianradio.com/Shows/Saturday/Unbelievable

Join the conversation: Facebook and Twitter

Get the MP3 Podcast of Unbelievable? Glen’s recent book ‘Divine Comedy, Human Tragedy: What is life?’ is an evangelistic book on why Christianity makes sense of the tragedy of death.

Michael Collett, an ex-Christian and a fellow Aussie, discusses why as an atheist he believes life can have meaning even if death is the end, and why he can’t believe in the joy of heavenly resurrection if there is also a hell.

For Glen’s book https://www.10ofthose.com/products/23634/divine-comedy-human-tragedy

For Michael Collett: https://twitter.com/collettmp

For Unbelievable? the Conference 2018: http://www.premier.org.uk/justask

Get signed copies of Unbelievable? the book and audiobook: www.unbelievablebook.co.uk

Get Unbelievable? the Conference 2017 DVD/CD & Digital Download: http://www.premier.org.uk/shop

For more faith debates visit http://www.premierchristianradio.com/Shows/Saturday/Unbelievable

Join the conversation: Facebook and Twitter

Get the MP3 Podcast of Unbelievable? Ep 68Does Calvinism excuse sinners and make God guilty? Guillaume Bignon & Paul Franks

Calvinist theology holds that everything is pre-ordained by God. Critics say that such a deterministic view makes God morally responsible for evil and means that sinners can’t be blamed for their wrongdoing – after all they were predestined to do it. Guilluame Bignon, a French convert to Christianity who is now a Calvinist philosopher/theologian, seeks to answer these questions in his new book Excusing Sinners and Blaming God: A Calvinist Assessment of Determinism, Moral Responsibility, and Divine Involvement in Evil. He engages W Paul Franks of Tyndale University College, Toronto on the issues, who holds to a Wesleyan/ Arminian view of libertarian freedom.
