Show Notes

Mary Rand, a trailblazing British athlete, has passed away at 86. She won the first British Olympic gold in track and field, the long jump, at the Tokyo Games in 1964. Rand set British and Olympic records and broke the world record on her final jump. She also earned silver in the womens pentathlon and bronze in the 4x100m relay, becoming the only British woman to win three medals at a single Olympics. Rands achievements earned her the BBC Sports Personality of the Year title and an MBE honor. She later married three times and settled in the US. No British athlete has won Olympic long jump gold since her victory.
