James Brown, a Liverpool-born editor who moved to the Isle of Man in 1846, revolutionized the islands political landscape. He started the Isle of Man Times in 1861, challenging the self-appointed House of Keys members who ran things. After being jailed for contempt in 1864, Browns appeal led to the islands first public election in 1867. His legacy lives on, with a new housing block named after him and his diary and artifacts preserved in the Manx National Heritage.
