For just $5 a month you get 4 Friday Patreon exclusives and the full version of our Wednesday shows and you get to help us keep making this show! Kendrick Johnson was 17 years young when he was murdered but no one has been brought to justice. Why? Perhaps because he was killed in the Deep South, possibly by the son of an FBI agent. It’s a tragic story that relates to the history of lynching, the FBI and so much more. The gripping documentary about all this Finding Kendrick Johnson is narrated by Jenifer Lewis from Black•ish so I talked to her and the film’s director Jason Pollock about this story. Original Air Date: January 17, 2018 Patrisse Cullors is stepping away from BLM so it’s a good time to look back at our 2018 interview diving into her incredible life that includes victories over poverty, homophobia, family incarceration, and a police force the criminalized her as a child—She dealt with all the pain, chaos and repression in her life and grew strong. She helped build and run Black Lives Matter for years, a movement that has changed the world but also led to her being surveilled and attacked by police. Nikole Hannah-Jones - I Live In A Slaveocracy
Original Air Date: January 8, 2020 Nikole Hannah Jones is in the news because UNC turned her down for a professorship even though she’s a MacArthur Genius grant recipient and a Pulitzer Prize winner so it’s a good tome to throwback to our 2020 interview. But what’s really going on is she’s the creator of the amazing 1619 project for The NY Times and that project is frightening to the right because it explains how America is still impacted by the legacy of slavery. It is not just our past. We are, today, a slaveocracy. The 1619 project is a podcast, a series of essays, and, soon, a series of books. She is a true genius and I could feel her genius as I spoke to her. She is a person who is toweringly influential in that her ideas have changed many people’s thinking on many issues, people including me. I look up to her intellectually and with the 1619 project she aims to shape the way people see the relationship between America and slavery. It was an honor to talk to @nhannahjones.
