Ep 139Kenya Barris–I Am Black AF
Kenya Barris is one of the hottest TV creators in the game—he’s the creator and star of #BlackAF on Netflix, a show I love even though many don’t. Nikole Hannah Jones—I Live In A Slaveocracy
Nikole Hannah Jones just won the Pulitzer Prize for her amazing 1619 project for The NY Times. That project has made people smarter, made people cry and made some conservatives lose their minds. It seeks to explain how America is still impacted by the legacy of slavery. It is not past, we are, today, in a slaveocracy. The 1619 project is a podcast, an ongoing series of articles and essays that are being taught in schools, and will soon be a series of books. This builds on Nikole’s extraordinary work for the Times. She is a verified genius, the recipient of a MacArthur grant, and I could feel her genius as I spoke to her. She is a person who is toweringly influential in that her ideas have changed my thinking on many issues and, with the 1619 project, aims to shape the way many people see the relationship between America and slavery. We spoke to her on January 8th, 2020, and we re-run this now because it’s an honor to hear Nikole Hannah Jones @nhannahjones speak. I hope you get a lot out of this. Ep 137Dorian Missick—I’m An Actor
Dorian’s one of the stars of For Life on ABC—his character just came out of the closet, a big moment in his arc—but he’s been a working actor for years—he was on Luke Cage, The Good Wife, Southland and a lot more. His wife is a big actor, too—Simone Missick played Misty Knight on Luke Cage. He’s a thoughtful, creative artist who talks about acting and how to make it in the business. The Central Park 5—We Are Free
The Central Park 5 aka the Exonerated 5, are symbols of both pain and redemption. The system rushed to convict them but years later new evidence uncovered their innocence and led to a multi-million dollar settlement that left them comfortable and empowered. And then Ava Duvernay’s Netflix film about them When They See Us gave their story new oxygen. After that they felt truly liberated. On June 19, 2019 I spoke with two of the Central Park 5, Dr. Yusef Salaam and Raymond Santana, in Atlanta. This is one of my favorite interviews in the history of the show. Instagram @toureshow. Ep 135Terry McMillan–I Love My Characters
Terry McMillan is one the most famous and successful writers of her time because she knows how to really connect with her audience. And the reason why she understands how to do that is because she knows how to make great characters and she knows how to listen to them. She doesn’t tell her characters what to do, she lets them tell her what she wants them to do and who they are and by really listening, she creates really honest characters who people love. This is a master class in how to write compelling fiction—after this convo I will never look at characters the same ever again. This is a must for anyone who aspires to be a successful writer. And check out Terry’s new novel It’s Not All Downhill From Here. And he’s a Brooklyn guy who’s working on helping some great local restaurants get meals to several Brooklyn hospitals. We talk about how he’s trying to make a difference during Corona times and about his philosophies around acting and about what’s going on with the new Batman. Ep 131Tayarisha Poe — I Direct Movies
Tayarisha Poe is the director of Selah And The Spades (on Amazon) which is a brilliant film about cliques in a private school and the badass Black girl who runs the whole social ecosystem. When you see it you know you’re looking at the debut film of a director who’s going to be making interesting and important films for a while. Ep 129Policing During Corona
In the frightening era of Coronavirus, the NYPD are on the front lines helping fight this battle. My friend Lt. Edwin Raymond polices in Brooklyn and says he normally encounters 3 dead bodies a week but nowadays he’s seeing 9 or 10 dead bodies a week. The police have a critical role in this moment—should they continue making arrests for small, non-violent incidents when that means people go to jail where they are hypervulnerable to Coronavirus? Should they arrest people for not practicing social distancing when that means they become hypervulnerable to Coronavirus? Should the police be scared that they could be spreading the virus? I talk about all of that and more with Lt. Raymond who’s long been fighting from within the force to make policing safer and more equitable. He’s been critical to helping decrease the use of quotas—for more on his movement to help reform the department, check out the amazing documentary Crime + Punishment. Ep 127Justin Simien–I Created Dear White People
Justin Simien is the mind behind Dear White People, the amazing Netflix show that was previously an amazing movie of the same name. I did not know that Dear White People, a show I adore, was partly inspired by my 2011 book Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness, What It Means To Be Black Now. We talk about that, of course, and how Corona is impacting him, and how to be successful in film and TV, and much more. Ep 115Who Killed Malcolm X
Who Killed Malcolm X is a hot new Netflix doc that tells us who pulled the trigger of the sawed-off shotgun that killed Malcolm X, which Newark mosque he was from, how he got away, how the NYPD knew Malcolm’s life was in danger and allowed him to operate, and how the FBI sowed the seeds of angry division in the Nation of Islam that led to Malcolm’s murder. I talk with the directors Rachel Dretzin and Phil Bertelsen about making the film and how the American government conspired to kill Malcolm—his top bodyguard at the end was an NYPD infiltrator and informant. A person who didn’t help identify Malcolm’s killer—a man who lived out his life in peace in Newark. A person who went on to infiltrate the Black Panthers. I can’t. Ep 111Amy Sherald—I Painted Michelle Obama
Amy Sherald painted the official portrait of Michelle Obama that’s hanging in the National Portrait Gallery but there’s an awesome story around how she got that commission and the artistic decisions she made in making that painting. We get into all of that but there’s also so much more to her life than that painting. Amy had already become a major portraitist before that commission, even though, just a few years before she met the Obamas, Amy was broke and wondering where her artistic career was going. She’s also got someone else’s heart inside of her thanks to a transplant that saved her life. She’s also a former rapper. And an all-around wonderful person. Ep 110Marc Lamont Hill—I Grew Up With Kobe
Marc Lamont Hill grew up in Philly playing basketball with Kobe Bryant. They were on different planets even then but Marc learned a lot about him in the hundreds of times they faced off. They went in different paths but stayed friends and Marc became more than just one of the coolest intellectuals in America, he became a basketball expert who thinks of himself as Mr. 76ers. He sits front row at every home game. Marc is an amazing brother who I’ve known and loved for many years and it was amazing to sit and talk with him about basketball and Kobe and everything else. Franklin Leonard is one of people who are aiding the Black film revolution from behind the scenes. He’s a veteran film exec who knows the game inside and out. He created The Black List, an annual survey of un-produced screenplays that spotlights the best of them, creating opportunities for young screenwriters. 37 films have leapt from The Black List to win Oscars. Leonard has worked for Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sydney Pollack and more. He’s one of the people who have helped perpetuate an amazing moment in the history Black film and he understands the game, and how to tell great stories, as well as anyone. Ep 108Harriet Tubman Came To Slay
Harriet Tubman is one of the inspiring figures in American history. For years she did the hard, dangerous, crucial work of running into the South and grabbing enslaved people off of plantations and bringing them to freedom through the Underground Railroad to the North—sometimes taking them as far as Canada. She risked her life and changed the lives of many, many families by rescuing people from slavery. In the recent movie about her, Harriet, I felt like crying during the montage where she walks in over and over with groups of people she’s saved. But if you think you know Tubman’s story because you’ve heard it, or because you saw the movie, just know that there’s much more to tell. Most accounts do not go into her later years, when she was a Union spy and when she led Union soldiers into a raid on a Confederate plantation where she ended up freeing over 700 people in one night. After seeing the film I wanted to hear the full story of Tubman’s life as we know it so I called the author of a great new book about Tubman called She Came To Slay by Rutgers University history professor Erica Armstrong Dunbar and she gave me much deeper insight on the real Tubman’s life including how she made it from the North to the South and back, what her life was like, what her friendship with Frederick Douglass was like, what her marriages were like, why we never see Tubman smile in photos, and more. Let me know what you think. Ep 107Nikole Hannah Jones—I Live In A Slaveocracy
Nikole Hannah Jones is the creator of the amazing 1619 project for The NY Times which has made people smarter, made people cry and made some conservatives lose their minds. It seeks to explain how America is still impacted by the legacy of slavery. It is not past, we are, today, in a slaveocracy. The 1619 project is a podcast, an ongoing series of articles and essays that are being taught in schools, and will soon be a series of books. This builds on Nikole’s extraordinary work for the Times and her amazing pieces on school segregation for This American Life called The Problem We All Live With. She is a verified genius, the recipient of a MacArthur grant, and I could feel her genius as I spoke to her. Ep 106Sandra St. Victor—I Need A Little Ghetto Heaven
Sandra St. Victor is a legendary singer who led a group called the Family Stand and sang the 90s classic "Ghetto Heaven.” She worked with Prince, Chaka Khan, Roy Ayers, and many more. This is almost a master class in how to sing because she goes deep into the physical and spiritual things you need to think about if you want to be a singer or if you just want to understand singing a little better. Ep 105Phillip Youmans—I Direct Movies
Phillip Youmans is 19 years young and he’s already written and directed a powerful film starring Wendell Pierce called Burning Cane that’s on Netflix right now. Ava Duvernay has called it a must see film. It’s a mature drama that does not seem like it was made by a teenage newbie. This conversation is about filmmaking in general, meant to help anyone who wants to direct, write, or make film, and it’s led by a filmmaking prodigy who seems destined to become a major filmmaker. Ep 104Yvette Nicole Brown—I Am Sunshine
Yvette Nicole Brown makes me happy every time I see her onscreen. She’s a ray of sunshine. That’s probably why she made it from growing up with nothing in Cleveland to having a long, steady career acting in Hollywood. She was on Community, she was in Avengers: Endgame, she’s done movies, sitcoms, kids shows, all kinds of things. We had an amazing talk about life and acting and walking away from her career to care for her Dad and much more. She’s an incredible person. Let me know what you think! Ep 103Kim Fields—I Am Living The Dream
Kim Fields has had an amazing acting career—she started as a kid on The Facts of Life, in her 20s she was a part of the iconic Living Single, she’s done the Real Housewives of Atlanta, and now she’s a director as well as an actor starring in Lifetime’s You Light Up My Christmas. I grew up watching her play Tootie on on The Facts of Life so it was a thrill to meet her. That said, I did not expect this conversation to get so deep! Ep 102Michael Eric Dyson—I’m In Jay-Z’s America
The intellectual heavyweight champion is back with a book breaking down the genius of Jay-Z called Jay-Z: Made In America. Dyson is an old friend of mine, he wrote the introduction for my book Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness, so we get into a deep conversation here. We talk about Jay-Z and the next MC he could write a whole book about and Kaepernick and his struggle to bury two brothers in the last few years. This is powerful and personal and brilliant and fun. Ep 101Malcolm Nance—I Know Why the Caged Trump Sings
Malcolm Nance is the author of a powerful new book about how Russia lured in and controlled Trump called The Plot To Destroy America. He knows Trump isn’t gripped by a fear of kompromat but a love of money. He was also in the Navy for over 35 years, reaching the highest levels and fighting in combat on multiple continents. He talks about Trump, combat, guns, crazy war stories, and how to survive being taken as a hostage. He’s an amazing American. Great conversation. Let me know what you think. Ep 100Lucas Bros: I Am Him
The Lucas Brothers are a pair of twins, Keith and Kenny, who are amazing stand-up comedians and comedy writers. They’re hysterical, they’re highly intellectual philosophers, they’re stoners, they’re everything. They’ve got a sitcom coming out and they’re working on another standup special and they’re part of Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show and they’re two of my favorite comics—well, they’re one act, so actually they’re one of my favorite comics—so for the 100th episode of this show it’s something special. Ep 99I Am Black In the Trump Era
I Am Black In the Trump Era Politicon is an annual multi-day political festival that now takes place in Nashville. I conceived and moderated a panel where I wanted to get some of my smartest Black friends onstage to talk about how they feel about being Black in the Trump era. I feel under siege, I feel rejected, and I feel like the country is in an era that’s painful and frightening to me and people who like me. I feel like the MAGA hat is the new Klan hood and it scares me to see it worn so brazenly and thoughtlessly. I wondered how others were feeling about being Black in the era of Trump. We had six awesome panelists—April Ryan the White House reporter, Malcolm Nance the superspy who just published the Plot To Betray America, Elie Mystal the legal analyst, Lexi McCammond the Axios reporter, Maya Wiley the activist and legal analyst, and Briahna Joy Gray the national press secretary for Bernie Sanders. The panel was attended by hundreds. Instagram @toureshow. Ep 98Lawrence O'Donnell—I Am the Last Word
Lawrence O’Donnell is one of the best TV hosts in cable news. He’s a man of passion and intelligence who prosecutes his subjects and sometimes his guests in a way that recalls a lawyer doing a cross examination. He’s had a fascinating life—he's hosted The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC for almost ten years, he wrote for the legendary TV show the West Wing, he was an advisor for New York Senator Daniel Moynihan in the 90s. We get into all of that and disdain for Donald Trump in this fascinating conversation. I’ve known Lawrence for a long time so this was a treat. Let me know what you think! Instagram @toureshow. Ep 94Susan Rice—I’m A Survivor
Ambassador Susan Rice was President Obama’s National Security Advisor for four years. She was the first one from the administration to go on TV and talk about the Benghazi attacks and the Republicans made her pay for that with an unending series of attacks that cost her a chance to become Secretary of State and ended up making her 9 year old daughter have frightening hallucinations. The Republicans’ attack on Rice was political, and personal, and had nothing to do with the actual tragedy that took place in Benghazi.
