2019 is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing! Yip, yip, yaw! On July 20th, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, two American astronauts, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on the moon. The Eagle has landed! And then, some six hours later, Neil became the first human to take one giant leap for mankind. And then Buzz followed Neil onto the moon's surface less than twenty minutes later. OR... did none of that ever happen? Did the several Apollo missions that followed NOT put ten other astronauts on the moon? This is what many people believe - that no one ever stepped foot on the moon. Napoleon! A man who knew before he died he would be remembered as being one of the most important European leaders in history - and boy was he right. He's regarded by many military historians as being one the best military strategists of all time. Dude was SUPER hard to beat on the battlefield but he was defeated several times - mostly because pretty much every other nation in Europe joined forces and ganged up on France to defeat him. Former Russian police officer Mikhail Popkov was found guilty on December 10th, 2018 of killing fifty-six people in Siberia. All but one victim were women between the ages of seventeen to thirty-eight. He was given a second life sentence. He already had a life sentence he'd been given in 2015 when he was convicted of murdering twenty-two Russian women. He used his badge for years to lure women into his car, drive them out into the woods, and brutally rape and kill them. And the whole time he was also a devoted husband and father. His family was devastated by his arrest - refusing for years to accept that the man they thought they knew so well could commit the horrible crimes he was convicted of. We travel today to Siberia and piece together a picture of a complete and total sociopath, a man Siberian prosecutors say is “pathologically attracted to killing,” on another Russian serial killer edition of Timesuck. On October 4th, 1994 the dead bodies of two Solar Temple cult members and their baby are found in Morin Heights, Quebec. All three have been stabbed to death. South American serial killer Pedro "Monster of the Andes" Lopez was convicted of killing 110 girls in Ecuador in 1983. He claimed to have killed roughly 350 between Ecuador, Peru, and his native Columbia. He spent only fourteen years in prison for those 110 Ecuadorian murders and then another three years in a Columbian psychiatric ward for additional murder conviction in that country, and then he was set free in 1998. Formed by young revolutionaries Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in response to police brutality that become commonplace in Oakland. The Mothman is a strange creature reportedly witnessed mainly in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia between November 12, 1966, and December 1967. He turned himself in and was sentenced to a state mental healthy facility where this killer with a genius level IQ manipulated psychiatrists into thinking he was cured. Three young girls were kidnapped, raped, and strangled to death near Rochester, NY in the early 70s. Carmen Colon, Michelle Maenza, and Wanda Walkowicz. Their crimes became referred to as the Alphabet Murders or the Double Initial Killings due to the first letter in their first name matching the first letter in their last name. No one has ever been caught but there are a variety of disturbing suspects including two different serial killers and another serial rapist. On February 29th, 2000, in the small, rugged town of Aberdeen, Australia, forty-five year old mother and grandmother Katherine Knight stabbed her live-in boyfriend thirty-seven times. In 1587, Englishman John White led a group of 118 colonists to what was supposed to Roanoke Island. One hundred fifteen of those colonists were never seen again after White returned to England to get word to Sir Walter Raleigh that the colonists desperately needed supplies. On August 18th, 1590, John White returned to Roanoke three years after leaving to get those supplies and found the settlement completely deserted and the word “Croatoan” carved into a fence post. And historians, archaeologists and others have been trying to figure out what happened to those initial settlers ever since. First president to be a resident of a state other than Massachusetts or Virginia. A hard-nosed son of Scotch-Irish immigrants who was quick to throw down in a duel. He fought in the Revolutionary War at the age of 13 and then fought off a would be assassin with a cane at the age of 68. And then he fought a whole bunch of people in between. First President to be assaulted while in office. First to have someone try and kill him in office. And now, long in the grave, his legacy fights to be known for more than slave-ownership and the infamous Trail of Tears. The Children of God cult aka The Family aka The Family International is still around today which is very disturbing considering their twisted origins and disgusting, sexually exploitive doctrinal past. Founded by David "Huge Perv" Berg in 1968 in Huntington Beach, California, they now operate to an unknown degree internationally, basing their existence in a highly sexualized interpretation of Biblical teachings, interpreting God's love as being expressed best through sex. Berg initially took a second wife saying it was God's will, as cult leaders so often do. He then began showing his followers "God's love" first through secret orgies with high-ranking members, then through the demand to share cult member's wives, who were suddenly forbidden to deny male members "God's love". David then commanded female members to spread God's love and do missionary work, which centered around "Flirty Fishing", i.e., having sex with random dudes to encourage them to join the cult. From there, women members, were pushed into "Hooking for Jesus" - outright prostitution. And from there, members were encouraged to show their children "God's love" as outright pedophilia was sanctioned and encouraged, even when it was incestuous. On January 22nd, 1987, forty-seven year-old R. Budd Dwyer, Republican State Treasurer of Pennsylvania, held a press conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to address his recent conviction on eleven counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, perjury, and interstate transportation in the aid of racketeering. The married father of two faced up to fifty-five years in prison and a $300,000 fine. He was scheduled to be sentenced the very next day, January 23rd, by a judge who he knew intended to make an example of him to deter other politicians from taking bribes in the future. Dean Arnold Corll. The Candyman Killer. A Texas momma’s boy who first made friends with local kids by handing out candy from his family’s Houston candy store like the absolute creep he was. Well, you asked for it. We got a bunch of emails to do something special for the 100th Monday episode of TImesuck and the main request was to do Timesuck's version of Drunk History. So, the good folks from fantastic restaurant 10/six in Couer d'Alene brought over crawfish etouffee, beignets, whiskey, beer, and mixed up some hurricanes... and I got blackout drunk. I don't start out drunk - it was a steady progression. Started out buzzed for the first sixty minutes or so of the recording and then, well, things get messy. I hope you enjoy it! In 1918 and 1919 (and also in 1910 and 1911), someone or several people terrorized, for the most part, Italian Grocers living in New Orleans with, you guessed it, an axe. Or, rather, with several axes. And razors. And even an iron bar in one incident. Someone was breaking into homes, grabbing the most terrible weapon they could find in the victim's house (usually a meat cleaver/butcher's axe), and giving citizens of New Orleans about the worst wake up call you can imagine. And authorities never figured out who did it. We examine the crimes, we take a fun look into the history of New Orleans, and my wife Lynze steps in and helps me finish the Suck I get to too drunk to complete on my own. I had a great time. He was one of the most famous actors of the day and a member of THE most famous acting family of the 19th century. And he killed the President. He killed the President after putting together several failed plans to kidnap the President. He was a heartthrob dubbed by some theater critics as "the most handsome man in America". Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator who escaped his gladiatorial school in Capua with about 70 other gladiators and slaves and then led a slave rebellion against the armies of Rome in the 1st century BCE , commanding a fighting force that grew to an army of 90,000–120,000 strong. We explore his fight and the interesting history of Roman gladiatorial combat in today's Suck. Billed now as the Pennhurst Haunted Asylum, Pennhurst was never an asylum. It wasn't a home for the mentally ill when it first opened its doors in 1908. It was a home for epileptics and the intellectually disabled, then called "idiotic" and "feeble-minded". And then it became a home for basically everyone society either didn't want to take care of or didn't know how to take care of. And it soon became severely overcrowded. And then it became both overcrowded and underfunded. And then it became a nightmare for it's "children" (the term its patients were given, whether they were six months old or sixty). Understaffing lead to squalid conditions where people were living and dying covered in their own feces and in wounds given to them by either themselves, other patients, or, in some cases, staff members. The government, after numerous lawsuits, shut Pennhurst down for good in 1987. And today, we look at why things got so bad they felt compelled to do so. And, we examine life for the mentally handicapped today in America. Have things gotten any better? What, as a society and culture, are we supposed to do for and with those who can do for themselves? How do we take care of each other? A lot of hard questions are asked in a thought-provoking edition of Timesuck. WARNING/DISCLAIMER: This is the most disturbing episode of Timesuck thus far. To the point I considered not releasing it. Maybe it just hit me unusually hard for some reason but the crime scene details are very sexually explicit and haunting. If descriptions of sexual torture trigger you in any way, sit this one out! David Parker Ray, the Toy Box Killer, kidnapped, sexually tortured, and possibly murdered an untold amount of women in the American Southwest in the 1990s (and maybe even earlier than this). We'll never know the full extent of the violence and damage he spread. We do know he created a $100,000 "Toy Box" - a customized metal trailer equipped with a gynecologist's chair, and homemade "sex toys" designed to cut, electrocute, tear, pierce, penetrate, and sodomize victims confined to his trailer with shackles and a metal collar. We know he raped his victims, that his accomplices raped his victims, and that he even forced victims to engage in bestiality. He recorded much of what he did on video. He led a small, Satanic sex cult in the otherwise sleepy, lakeside community of Elephant Butte, NM. He recorded and played a horrific BDSM sexual orientation tape to be played for victims he kidnapped and drugged describing in excruciating detail the horrors that awaited them in the days ahead. The tale of the Toy Box Killer reads like something out of an Eli Roth torture porn script. And we peek into this preposterous darkness in this you never really know what's going on in your neighborhood, fear the darkness edition of Timesuck. Pancho Villa! Pancho Villa was a revolutionary fighter who despised the wealthy landowners who had subjugated the impoverished farming class, comprised of mostly indigenous people, since long before he was born. He stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He also stole from the rich to fuel the various wars he fought in, all of which had the same goal - to topple Mexico’s existing power structure and redistribute the wealth the upper 1% possessed amongst the poor. The story of the Donner Party is one of the most disturbing tales of western migration during the time of Manifest Destiny, the common 19th-century belief that the United States was destined to expand across the entire continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Well, the destiny of many of the members of the Donner Party was to spread their actual bones around a frozen Sierra Nevada mountain camp as they were eaten by other members of their party. That's what they manifested. Theirs is a fascinating tale of bad decisions that led to much worse decisions that led to, well, cannibalism.
