Also we discuss the excruciating problem of having a 20+ year old practice/patient base and the ups and downs of having a "history" with people. Finally, we open the door to a potential next podcast to talk about an ideal way to do group practice. This is a really good one. Don't miss a minute!

Smithson on Specialization (part 1)
Dr. Jason Smithson joins Alan this week to talk about specialization. Jason has taken a pretty interesting path to the career he currently has. His first focus was going to be going through a fixed pros residency in the US with a plan to teach at a University in London along with having a cushy private practice gig to boot. Then things changed and Jason began to train in oral surgery, but once he realized the commitment he'd be making to more education, he switched plans again. He found himself in a General Practice Residency and actually stayed in that practice for upwards of 20 years!=== While he was here, he actually began training in a perio residency as well. Jason is a good person to discuss specializing with, but I think you'll find this conversation goes in directions you aren't expecting. We'll follow this conversation up with the second half next week!

Reese Harper on Accidental Business Owners (DHP145)

Keto and Ortho with Dr. Matt Standridge (DHP244)
As the Dental Hacks approach 5 years in podcasting we are featuring one of the original members of the Dental Hacks Brain Trust, Dr. Matt Standridge! A lot has happened in those 5 years for Matt and we dig into what he's been up to in that time. For one thing, the dude has lost a lot of weight and become kind of a big deal in the low-carb/keto/primal diet internet space. He created a podcast a year or so back that allowed him to really get to know the movers and shakers in this movement! And if that wasn't enough, he's become a kind of ortho guru, too! Today's episode features a conversation about magnfication. Jason and Alan are both dental microscope users and have had interesting journeys from essentially no magnification to loupes all the way to regular use of microscopes! Yelp is Worse Than Candy Corn with Dr. Josh Austin (DHD101)
Dr. Josh Austin joins Alan to discuss getting reviews for your office. Should you pay a service? Josh thinks "no." He explains the systems that he uses to get lots of reviews in Google as well as Yelp (he asks for some, but not for others). We also discuss candy preferences and how Peeps and Cadbury eggs are overstepping their bounds. [caption id="attachment_1341" align="alignleft" width="500"] Al really likes black licorice, which Josh thinks is disgusting. But obviously Al lives his life on the edge while Josh sticks with boring regular candy.[/caption] You aren't born knowing how to run a business.
