Very Clinical: The Ketodontist Weighs In!
EDr. Matt Standridge, the ketodontist himself, stepped off the stage at VoD directly into a podcast with Zach and Kevin! He answered the questions that everyone was talking about and some of them might surprise you! The questions: How did COVID affect your practice? You have to have a crown on #2...what material do you choose? Did you/would you place sealant on your own children? Your significant other needs ortho...wires/brackets or aligners? If your own #29 needed endo/core and crown/crown lengthening, would you do it or go right to an implant? If your significant other had a slight diastema between 8 and 9 would you suggest ortho, resin or porcelain? Shorts: It's Not the Saxophone
ECould buying a REALLY nice saxophone make you a better saxophonist? Well, maybe. But you'd be better off investing in lessons and practicing a lot. A nice horn is icing on the cake, but it can only make so much difference. The same goes for dental instruments, materials and technologies. Al loves the idea of short cuts, but over and over he's realized that success comes with putting in the work. Group Function: When the Pain Becomes Great Enough
EInspired by bad service at his bank and horrible features in accounting software, Al turns to his Brain Trust to talk about the resistance to change and how to break through it! Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Frank Clayton join Al to discuss all the ways that we resist our gut and drag our feet against the changes we need to make. Whether it's moving your office, firing your employee or switching banks, we've got ideas about how to help you move through change! That's what we're all aiming for and one excellent way to get there is to use a dual cured core material to build a broken down tooth back up to ideal contour. Cosmecore from Cosmedent is my choice for buildups. It's dual cure, comes in a variety of colors and cuts just like a tooth. You'll get a super smooth finish with no gouging. Both work great, but those syringes are handy and don't take much room on a set up. Check it out at verydentalpodcast.com/cosmecore! EWhen you're putting in legitimate effort and not getting results, it feels really unfair. What do you do when you're doing the best you can and things still aren't going well? Very Dental: Working Hard to Not Work So Hard with Dr. Chris Bowman
EAl recently got to sit down with Dr. Chris Bowman at Voices of Dentistry 2022 Mark Costes finished his talk on time at VoD 2022! Miracle? Maybe. Al is anal retentive about time and timeliness. Chris let's the patient that he's not going to rush on their care. That's reframing things a bit. Is Delta Premier going to go away? How can we "top off our practice" with a bit of insurance participation? "It's good to be old" Using "negative language" (limitations and restrictions) when referring to dental benefits One patient in 4 chairs. "Doc, you might as well be going fishing." Shorts: Rooting for You
EAl is back from his February hiatus with some thoughts on an overlooked skill/talent/tool: likeability. It's awesome to be amazing at your craft. It's 100% worth learning new techniques and delivering as close to perfection as possible. But let's be completely honest…stuff goes wrong. The best dentist you know still has appointments that they wish that they could forget. A couple things about likeability. To be blunt, people don't sue someone that they like. The rare time that things go badly, having a patient that has legitimate affection for you can make a HUGE difference. For most people it's way easier to be likeable than you think. But it requires that you take a good hard look at how you feel about your "doctor" role. Go check out the Very Dental Facebook group (use password Timmerman or Hornbrook for entry!) Group Function: Al Doesn't Want to Talk to People with Tom and Joe of Your Virtual Consult
EA very slap happy Al is joined by Tom Brown and Joe Chickerillo of "Your Virtual Consult!" Your Virtual Consult was one of the sponsors of January's Voices of Dentistry. This conversation was nothing short of fascinating because Al has always been underwhelmed by "teledentistry." This isn't teledentistry, this is SO MUCH BETTER! The guys discussed: What is teledentistry and why does it suck? How could you use "Your Virtual Consult" to increase case acceptance? They discuss the ingenious process that they're using to help patients get comfortable with YOUR office! How can you use "Your Virtual Consult" make it so you don't ever have to have phone calls or Zoom calls ever again. Al prefers texting. Al prefers the automated checkout. Al wants to be left alone. How can you use "Your Virtual Consult" like a giant set of headphones to make the world leave you alone, but actually makes you seem caring and inviting? How can you use "Your Virtual Consult" to help you find the patients that fit your office well? You're going to hear that Al is really excited about Your Virtual Consult because he is. You need to have a demo. Al watched it at VoD and is convinced! Go to the Very Dental Facebook group (password: Timmerman or Hornbrook) and get all Your Virtual Consult questions answered by Tom and Joe themselves! Or call (858) 939-9338! Also...there's a bit of talk about why there are no ads on today's show and the future of the podcast. Some links from the show: Voices of Dentistry The Very Dental Facebook Group

What are you looking forward to the most at VOD? Which speaker will leave you speechless? What is the best kind of CE to seek out as a new general dentist? Sometimes I feel as if I'm a less than adequate dentist because I don't use all the newest, greatest technology and I'm not on the cutting edge of new techniques. Can you talk a bit about the dentists that fly under the radar, the ones that just do "tried and true" dentistry? Is there shame in that? Is it important to be on the cutting edge? That's the sound of no cross contamination. That's the sound of your patient knowing that you are looking out for them. Sure you get a super sharp, never been used bur each and every time you open a Microcopy bur, but mostly your patients know that you take cross contamination seriously. One excellent way to get there is to use a core material to build the tooth back up to ideal contour. Cosmecore from Cosmedent is my choice for building up a broken down tooth. It's dual cure, comes in a variety of colors and cuts just like a tooth. You'll get a super smooth finish with no gouging. Right now I've got the 50 gram dispenser that fits in a small impression gun, but when I need to refill I think I'll go with the 8 gram syringe. EIdentity is a weird concept. "Dentist" is technically a job description (what you do) but for many of us, including Al, it becomes our identity. Or at least a huge part of it. Very Dental: What To Do With a Dental Degree featuring Dr. David Rice
EDr. David Rice joined Alan for a rousing conversation that took place above the exhibit floor at the recent Greater New York Dental Meeting! David is the creator/founder of IgniteDDS and was recently placed as the editor in chief of DentistryIQ! Their conversation went all over the place and here are some of the highlights: Where did IgniteDDS come from? Dental school and student debt: then vs. now What are new dentists doing after dental school nowadays? What options does a dental degree give you? (spoiler: it's not just private practice!) Dentists as writers Dental speaking isn't as glamorous as you might think Connecting with an audience is the best and worst part about speaking Presenting "naked" and perfectionism Becoming an owner in 2021 Practice transitions: work with the people who know how! I've found that using a digital workflow for posterior zirconia is very predictable. So much so that when I've evaluated margins, contour and interproximal contacts...I'm ready to cement. Why so cocky? Typically the digital workflow usually nails the occlusion. But more importantly, Microcopy Dental has a posterior adjustment system for zirconia (and lithium disilicate) that is so simple and SO GOOD. First, I use Bite-Chek articulating paper for accurate and easy to read occlusal contact marking. Then I use the specially designed Z adjuster diamond (my favorite is the tear drop shape) to refine my occlusion and finally I use the 2 step Neoshine Z polishers to bring my surface back to a high, polished shine! Microcopy has done the heavy lifting to make adjusting posterior restorations a breeze. And all of their products are single patient use so it's easy clean up and no cross contamination! Go check the system out at verydentalpodcast.com/adjust! Ideal preps. That's what we aim for. One excellent way to get there is to use a core material to build the tooth back up to ideal contour. Very Dental: The Black Friday Spectacular featuring Dr. Frank Spear
EAlan features a throwback interview with Dr. Frank Spear on this Black Friday episode! Back in 2019, mere months before the pandemic, we had a chance to talk with Frank Spear about some interesting research he was doing. It seems that what dentists thought about the profession isn't exactly what the data suggested about the profession. Some topics that we covered: Why do insurance companies cover thing so differently from state to state? The beauty of practicing in groups. But not necessarily a DSO. Could someone become Frank Spear in the way that Frank did considering student debt as it is now? How did beautiful temporaries make a difference in Frank's career? Why does Frank feel responsible to help the narrative that dentists tell each other? What's the data the Frank would really like to see? Why is it so impossible to compare dental businesses and income across the country? How can you compare apples to apples? Take home message: things are better than dentists are telling themselves! What is dental school like when your dad is Frank Spear? How could dental school teach things with more context? Are there useful parallels between dental and medical education? How will Frank's teaching schedule be changing in the future? How is the curriculum at Spear Education changing? What kind of "big numbers" has Frank been impressed with lately? (spoiler: it has to do with Spear Practice Solutions) Some links from the show: The Voices of Dentistry (use code VeryDental) The Very Dental Facebook group Spear Practice Solutions Zoom Podtrak P4 If you would you like support the Very Dental Podcast Network you should support our sponsors! Very Clinical: High Fiber Dentistry with Dr. Nate Lawson
ENate Lawson, DDS is a dental researcher who is the mastermind behind the @dentaltube Instagram page which has been voted one of the top educational dental accounts on the internet. With 76K followers and growing, you'll see why with their excellent images. We start off talking about funny Thanksgiving stories. We pivot into discussing cracks and fiber usage. We lament the lack of cracked tooth education in dental school. We talk about transilluminators. We talk about using fibers as reinforcement. We talk about fiber reinforced composite. The Very Dental podcast is brought to you by our friends at Microcopy Dental. Neodiamonds from Microcopy Dental are very fine. I mean, all of them are awesome, but some of them are actually "very fine." Specifically I mean the yellow striped ones they call "finishing" diamonds. I use Microcopy finishing diamonds on just about any patient that I might be spinning a bur on. Very fine finishers do the heavy lifting on composites so polishing is simple and easy. I use them to finish crown preps. I've been known to adjust Emax and Zirconia with them. Once you try them you're going to find a ton of places to use them! And just like all of Microcopy's burs, they're sterile out of the package and single use means they're sharp and efficient and can be disposed of at the end of the appointment! Go check them out at verydentalpodcast.com/veryfine (all one word)! Cosmecore by Cosmedent is one of the most versatile materials in dentistry.
