In this episode we welcome back the great Daniel Torridon of the Onion Unlimited podcast to talk about his recent, let's call it...life adventure. Daniel developed a romantic relationship with a woman who lives on the other side of the globe. Despite the distance and against all the odds he took the leap to travel to see her. They already knew each other intimately, albeit virtually, but the stars aligned! Daniel is now in the process of selling all his things and permanently relocated to live in Queensland with his twin flame. Let's hear that story. Enjoy :)

In this episode Chris gets back into Alfred North Whitehead's "Process and Reality." We talk about our fundamental assumptions and intuitions of reality (such things as substance, extension, time, etc.) and explore how these things fit into Whitehead's process cosmology. This one is the Thanksgiving plague episode where Chris recounts his vicious bout of flu, but also reviews all the great television he watched while recovering. We touch on Ye, the weird, socially-enforced censorship of history and discuss the advantages of developing community in a way that puts the power, creativity and direction in the hands of its members (and not Papa Government). In this episode Chris and Kyle get back together after 2 weeks off. In this episode Chris highlights his beef (so far, anyway) with Alfred North Whitehead's model of reality--Philosophy of Organism. He poses the questions that beg for an answer and highlights where Whitehead fails to be clear. Just what the hell is an "Actual Entity"...or an "Eternal Object" for that matter? Whitehead tells us that experience arises from "primary data" and that "a thing" mediates between Potentiality and Actuality. He then waits pages and pages to clarify, with mixed success. In this episode Chris attempts a psychological interpretation of the symbols in the great painting by Salvador Dali entitled: Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man. This was an exercise in the same type of free-association the depth psychologists like Freud and Jung engaged in. In it Chris tries to understanding what meaning is and where it comes from. He begins and ends with the same overarching question: Can there be valid meaning interpreted in symbols/art beyond what the artist intended? If so, what does this say about meaning in general? In this episode we begin our exploration of Alfred North Whitehead's magnum opus "Process and Reality." This one serves as an introduction to the novel conceptualization of God and conscious experience that Whitehead introduced to the philosophic world, with emphasis on his speculative technique in generating a new model of reality. Whitehead defends imagination as a valid faculty to exploring the world and achieving knowledge. He also envisions reality as a "Process" generated by interaction between and within the One substance that makes up the cosmos. Enjoy :)

In this episode we explore the ancient Greek fables of Aesop. I hoped to find psychologically significant parallels to myths and fairytales, but I found something entirely unexpected. In Aesop we find parallels to the Bible, we find the origins of many common expressions still in use today, but more than that, we get a glimpse into the social and cultural life of ordinary Ancient Greeks. He get to see what they valued, what they criticized and all their prejudices laid bare. Surprising. Entertaining. Enjoy :)

This one is for the ladies... In this episode we round out our psychological exploration of Jung's Archetypes as seen through the personalities and stories of the Ancient Greek gods. This episode hones in on the goddesses of Olympus and attempts to outline the journey of womanhood through the various personalities exemplified by Hera, Artemis, Athena, Hestia and Aphrodite. We see represented the girly-girl who uses her beauty as a tool, the fierce feminist who proves herself the equal of any man, the matriarch who rules and the preserver of family, clan and identity itself. In this episode we dive deeper into Ed Edinger's "The Eternal Drama." We are presented with the heavenly realm of Olympus as a projection of the unconscious and with the 12 Olympian Gods as projections of our own in-born psychological forces. Edinger describes a "Zeus personality," an "Apollo personality," a "Hermes personality," and so on. He tells us their stories and helps us to see ourselves in them and to experience the gods within. This episode concludes our discussion of Rudolf Steiner's--How to Know Higher Worlds. We explore more practical instructions for how to train in the "occult sciences," which surround increasing our capacity for empathy and systematically tearing down the psychological boundaries of identity...between yourself and others, between subject and object, between God and its creation. The ultimate goal of this striving took me by surprise. Steiner is not teaching ritual magic, he doesn't point to gods or demons, but rather points to the God-within. Steiner lays out a pattern of behavior and thinking that leads inevitably to an ego death and mystical enlightenment. It is endogenous. Lying in wait for each of us to become ready for its manifestation. Enjoy :)

In this episode we introduce the early 20th century philosopher and occultist--Rudolf Steiner. We explore his book "How to Know Higher Worlds" and compare and contrast his methods with those of Carl Jung. Steiner and Jung were contemporaries of each other and, while they likely never encountered each other, came to eerily similar conclusions from wildly different perspectives. In this episode we return to Jung's mystical "Red Book" and recount 2 of his "visions." We meet (and kill) a destitute man and then chat with a monk in the desert. Through these experiences Jung comes to realize he exists as two worlds--one conscious, the other unconscious, one individual, the other collective, one as being, the other becoming. He can no longer hold on to the one-sided image of himself and of God that we wants to. He can no longer think of them as all good or as only its highest manifestation...he must complete the picture, embrace the whole and recognize that he is a "piece of the darkness" too. Enjoy :)

In this episode we explore the 18th century scientist and mystic--Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg led an interesting life as a respected philosopher and scientist before changing to theological themes in his later life. This change was attributed to a mystical experience, wherein, Swedenborg claimed, he was given the ability to live simultaneously in the Natural and Spiritual worlds. Swedenborg speaks to angels, travels to heaven and is taught the mysteries of God and being. His mystic vision parallels that of Sir Humphry Davy who was born only 6 years after Swedenborg's death. Both men saw the spiritual "heaven" and the "angels" in the material expanse of space and in the stars and planets. Enjoy :)

In this episode we enter the second half of Carl Jung's Red Book. And it does not disappoint. The first image Jung encounters here is "The Red One," who he strongly suspects is the Devil himself. His interaction with The Red One lead to an interesting examination of completeness. Jung suggests that there is something critical missing from the Pagan path that Christianity offers and something missing from the Christian path that Paganism offers. The solution is to join them to find completeness. To integrate them, just as we integrate the unconscious in ourselves. But this is not without its dangers... Enjoy :)

This episode picks up where we left off with Louis von Franz. We jump head first into fairytales from Siberia, Germany and indigenous America. We see snakes crawling out of king's mouths while they're sleeping and the homes of long dead relatives beneath a brook in the forest. We encounter holes and wells and the end of the world...all of which reveal themselves to be portals from this world into the Unconscious world. We fall into it like you might into a well, by sinking deep within ourselves. There we find the underworld of the Unconscious, where dangers lie, but great treasure too--both equally unknown. In this episode we follow Erich Neumann from the primordial symbol of the self-created Uroboros to the primeval Great Mother. This journey is a perilous one! Consciousness has to find a way to tear itself free of the place of its birth--The Great Mother. But once it's succeeded, it finds itself at the mercy of fate and fear. The "Self," once achieved, finds itself in the Unknown...submerged, struggling and terrified. Neumann then shows us this same story, our story, through the minds and times of bygone peoples. In deepest antiquity as in the modern day, we acknowledge the Great Mother as Mother Earth, as the Universe, as the Goddess of life and death. We imagine her holding her new born son, like Horus, Marduk or the Christ child. She is the cosmos swaddling the new God. She is comfort and sustenance and peace...and yet we must wean! We suffer, yes, but wean we must in order to be.

This episode concludes the first part--Liber Primus--of Jung's Red Book. Shit is getting thick, as Jung encounters the force of consciousness in the form of the Prophet Elijah and the force of unconsciousness in the form of Salome. We descend together into the underworld over and over and see many wild and strange things. We shrink to miniscule size Alice in Wonderland style; we see images of the future come to fruition in the Second World War and the image of God as a child gestating in each and every one of us. Together we become One, Christ and the new God born from the corpse of the old. Enjoy :)
