Turkey Talk with Billy Yargus This week, almost first time guest and 2 time Grand National Calling Champion, Billy Yargus joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk all things turkey. The Final Results from the 2024 Raffle Hunt with Mark Hatfield In late 2023 and early 2024, The Turkey Hunter Podcast raffled a turkey hunt for two lucky hunters in South TX to join Cameron and Andy for a late winter hunt. Over two thousand tickets were sold during the raffle period, and Del Ghia and Jason "Justin" Barnes won the hunts. A great time was had by all and new friendships were formed during the hunts. Best of all, funds were raised to be donated to the NWTF and TFT. Both the NWTF and TFT received donations of $2000 because of your generosity. This week, Mark Hatfield with the NWTF is on the show to talk about where your raffle donation money is being spent. In addition to talking about the projects supported with your donations, we talk about the matching dollars that come from the government and other organizations that helped to make the $2,000 donation much, much more than a couple thousand dollars. The NWTF always does a great job maximizing the spend of each dollar donated, and the donation from the raffle tickets purchased by our listeners yielded the same results by the organization. The NRCS and Wild Turkey Habitat Management with Mike Hansbrough This week, Mike Hansbrough, who is the Area Resource Biologist in West Tennessee for the NRCS, joins Cameron and Andy today to discuss the role the NRCS can play in habitat management on private property. Mike discusses a few of the programs, such as CRP, EQIP, and CSP that are available to help private landowners manage their properties for targeted wildlife species. These programs not only help to provide a management plan for a landowners property, but they can provide needed dollars to help offset the cost of performing the services needed to improve the habitat. Results from the TN Delayed Season Start Study This week, Dr. Craig Harper and Dr. David Beuhler with the University of Tennessee join Cameron and Andy on the show to discuss their recommendations from their 7 year study regarding the effects of delaying the start of turkey seasons and the potential for increase in poult recruitment. The results of the study showed that moving the start of hunting season to later in the year did not greatly affect the initiation of nesting or the start of incubation for wild turkey hens. Drs Buehler and Harper share the details of the study and upcoming vote to possibly change the start date of the turkey hunting season. This is a very informative interview with information that can be applicable for any states that are considering moving the start date of their seasons to later in the year. Listen in! All Things Wild Turkey with Dr. Grant Woods In this week's episode, Dr. Grant Woods joins Cameron and Andy to discuss all things wild turkey. We talked about how the frigid temps experienced a few weeks ago might affect the young and old turkeys. 2024 Unicoi Recap Show This week, Andy shares the audio of the interviews from this year's Unicoi Custom Turkey Call Maker's Show held in January of 2024 at Unicoi State Park outside of Helen, GA. This call maker's show features some of the best custom call makers in the country, and it is an amazing place to go and put your hands on hundreds of turkey calls and learn from the call makers themselves. A Little Alabama Afternoon Delight This week, Andy shares the audio from an afternoon hunt in his home state of Alabama. Although this turkey did not gobble a great deal, he showed just enough interest in Andy to keep Andy's interest in him. Turkey Talk with Adam Butler This week, Adam Butler, the Wild Turkey Program Coordinator with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, joins Cameron and Andy on the show. Adam discusses the state of the wild turkey within the state of Mississippi, recent regulation changes made in the state, and the history of the wild turkey within the state and how trap and transfer efforts helped to reintroduce turkeys in certain areas. Adam also talks about how flooding affects the turkey populations within the state a great deal since Mississippi is primarily low land state. Home At Last Is The Hunter with Chip Gross This week Chip Gross joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk about his book, Home At Last Is The Hunter. Chip is a former Wildlife Officer with the state of Ohio, and he is also the author of the book Poachers Were My Prey that is about RT Stewart's undercover Wildlife Officer work. The Man Who Hunted Men with RT Stewart - Part 1 This week, Cameron and Andy present you with part 1 of the fascinating interview with RT Stewart who is a retired conservation officer who went undercover to bust what was at the time the largest poaching ring ever busted. The bust resulted in 26 convictions of poachers who illegally killed wild turkeys and deer out of season, over the legal bag limit, at night, and just for kicks. RT was a pioneer in undercover work for the Ohio DNR, and he literally became a member of the community in which these poachers were living and put his own life at risk getting video evidence of these violations in the process. The Slam of All Slams This week, Chip Davis joins Cameron and Andy to talk about completing the slam of all slams. Chip is the second person to complete the Grand Slam, US Super Slam, Royal Slam, World Slam, Canadian Slam, and Mexican Slam. The Monkey Off of the Back We are back! Today we have Scott McDonald joining us on the show to share a hunt in Tennessee that he enjoyed with Cameron. This was Scott's third time to hunt in Tennessee. Even though he had some close encounters, he had not been able to mark the state off of his list in his pursuit of his super slam. Cameron offered to help Scott with a hunt to see if they could make it happen in the spring of 2023. This is a fun episode with Cameron and Scott sharing the hunt with Andy. A Turkey Hunting Survey with Jay Cantrell This week Jay Cantrell with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk about recent public meetings and a survey for South Carolina turkey hunters. Over the course of the summer, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources held meetings across the state to talk about the declining wild turkey population in SC. These meetings came about because of the concern expressed to the SCDNR by licensed hunters in the state. As good as the in person meetings were, Jay and the SCDNR felt like they wanted more input from hunters within the state. So, Jay recorded his presentation and posted it on YouTube (click here to watch it). The state also posted their survey online for hunters to take, so that they can get more participation and input on possible solutions from the public. This is a great show, and Cameron and Andy's hope is that more states will take the initiative to hold similar meetings with their hunters as well as take their presentation and surveys online for all who can to participate and have their voices heard. Listen in and then take some action if you are interested in trying to turn the population decline around in your own state.

Mountain Pine Forest Turkey Hunt This week, Cameron and Andy share one of their turkey hunts with us. This hunt took place in the mountains of the western US in the spring of 2023. Cameron and Andy were together on this hunt, and it turned out to be a good one with some cat and mouse being played. Although there is not a whole lot of gobbling in the early stages of this hunt, patience, persistence, and the right turkey call paid off in the end. 2023 Spring Turkey Season Recap Andy and Cameron are back this week to recap their 2023 spring turkey hunting season. Both Andy and Cameron share three takeaways from the 2023 season. They discuss some of their experiences in their travels around the country and some of the interesting people they met along the way. Andy shares a story of hens with poults on the same piece of ground as henned up gobblers. They also share whether or not they achieved all of their season goals that they set for themselves early this year. You'll want to listen all the way through the end of the show for a big announcement about going to a bi-weekly podcast format through the summer months. This is a fun show, so be sure to listen in.

Turkey Season Turkey Soup This week, following a week off for a turkey trip, Cameron and Andy share a little turkey soup during turkey season. Many states are starting to report their harvest and licensing statistics. So, Cameron and Andy share some stats for Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Iowa. Overall, so far, many states are reporting excellent harvest statistics. Are these great harvest statistics due to higher turkey populations this year or due to higher hunter efforts and better weather? Well, it is really hard to tell in so many states because they do not know how many turkey hunters they have turkey hunting. So, these states have no clue as to whether there were more turkey hunters in the woods chasing turkeys or some other factor lead to the increase in harvest statistics. In addition to the harvest stats, Cameron and Andy share the story of a hunter who was shot by his hunting partner, and how at some point he just realized and accepted the fact that he was going to be shot. This is a wild story with some pretty nasty looking pictures showing the wounds. Check them out online. And, Andy shares two stories of "hunters" who let the dream of a fresh wild turkey in the freezer get the best of them in New York. Thanks to conservation officers enforcing the law, these two hunters were ticketed and had their turkeys confiscated. This is a fun episode, so listen in!
