S1 Ep 201The Trail Went Cold - Episode 103 - The Great Mull Air Mystery

Christmas Eve 1975. The Isle of Mull, Scotland. 54-year old Peter Gibbs, a former Royal Air Field pilot and World War II veteran, has dinner with his girlfriend at the Glenforsa Hotel, but decides to go for an evening flight. After taking off from an adjacent airfield in a Cessna, Gibbs never returns. Four months later, Gibbs’ body is discovered on a hill one mile away from the hotel and his cause of death is determined to be exposure, but the missing aircraft is never found. An enquiry concludes that Gibbs likely crashed the Cessna into the water, swam to shore, and subsequently died on the hill, but there are a number of discrepancies to suggest this scenario would have been impossible. How did Gibbs’ body remain undiscovered on the hill for four months? If he crashed his aircraft, how did he avoid sustaining any serious injuries? What prompted Gibbs to take such a dangerous nighttime flight to begin with? For our final holiday-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a baffling unexplained death known as “The Great Mull Air Mystery”. October 31, 1979. Williamson County, Texas. The nude body of a young woman is discovered in a concrete culvert next to Interstate 35. August 16, 1983. Idaho Springs, Colorado. 14-year old Beth Miller leaves her home to go jogging, but never returns. The investigation uncovers some promising leads, including eyewitness accounts of a man in a red pick-up truck who was seen flirting with Beth in the days prior to her disappearance. Ten years later, the former girlfriend of a deceased suspect leads the authorities towards an alleged burial location for Beth’s body, but nothing is found. February 9, 1989. Gainesville, Florida. 20-year old university student Tiffany Sessions leaves her condo to go for a power walk, but does not return. 24 years later, after a convicted murderer named Paul Rowles dies in prison, investigators uncover evidence in his possessions which seems to implicate him in Tiffany’s disappearance, but her remains cannot be found. August 5, 1989. Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. 17-year old Tracy Kroh leaves her house to visit her sister, who turns out not to be home. When Tracy does not return, her abandoned car is eventually discovered in a nearby town square, but Tracy is nowhere to be found. Four years later, some of Tracy’s possessions are found next to a remote creek, but she continues to remain a missing person. While these three cases do not seem to have any connection to each other, they would unexpectedly be linked together in 1994 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a bizarre anonymous tip which alleged that all three victims were still alive. For the first time, “The Trail Went Cold” is going to tackle three unsolved missing persons cases in the same episode and explore the likelihood of them being connected. S1 Ep 18The Trail Went Cold - Episode 71 - Lulu Courchesne

October 18, 1987. Rochester, New Hampshire. 34-year old Alene “Lulu” Courchesne is found strangled to death next to a turnpike outside of town. Even though Lulu is engaged to someone else, she had gone out on a date the previous night with a man named Rick McCue. Rick is eventually charged with Lulu’s murder and found guilty at trial, even though compelling evidence seems to point to the brother of Lulu’s fiancée. After allegations of jury misconduct cause his conviction to be overturned, Rick receives a new trial and is acquitted in 1993, but no one else is ever charged with Lulu Courchesne’s murder. Did Rick McCue actually commit this crime, or did the real perpetrator get away with it? This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” examines a controversial murder case which has yet to find a complete resolution after 30 years. S1 Ep 25The Trail Went Cold - Episode 65 - Kristen Tomlin

November 13, 1981. Stinson Beach, California. 44-year old John Paul Russell and 34-year old Bob Dozier emerge from the Pacific Ocean, claiming that their yacht, the Freedom II, sank after a large freighter crashed into them. John’s 30-year old wife, Suzanne Russell, and their 20-year old friend, Kristen Tomlin, were also on the boat and presumed drowned. However, when no trace of the Freedom II can be found, investigators begin to suspect that the whole incident is an elaborate scam orchestrated by the two men. Evidence also suggests that Suzanne Russell may have been in on the scam and faked her own death. After hiding out as fugitives for over a decade, John Paul Russell and Bob Dozier are captured and serve time in prison for fraud, but no trace of Kristen Tomlin is ever found. Was Kristen also a part of the scam and did she stage her own disappearance? Or was she an innocent victim who fell prey to some con artists? This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers an incredibly bizarre fraud scheme involving a missing boat which eventually turned into an unsolved missing persons case.
