The Trail Went Cold

December 19, 1959. Osprey, Florida. After spending the day running errands and visiting a family friend, 25-year old Cliff Walker, his 24-year old wife Christine, and their two children, three-year old Jimmie and 23-month old Debbie, head back to their rural home in separate vehicles. The following morning, the family’s bodies are discovered inside their house. They were each shot in the head before Debbie was drowned in the bathtub and Christine has also been sexually assaulted. Over the next several decades, investigators would look at a number of different suspects, but two of the most promising turn out to be Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, who were responsible for the murder of the Clutter family in Kansas one month earlier, a crime which became the subject of the iconic book, “In Cold Blood”. However, DNA testing on the deceased killers turns out to be inconclusive and there is no evidence to conclusively implicate anyone. December 17, 2006. Sydney, Australia. After spending the day with her family, 25-year old Katrina Ploy drives away from her parents’ house. Hours later, Katrina’s abandoned car and some of her possessions are found next to an oceanside cliff known as “The Gap”, but Katrina herself is missing. Katrina’s body is found floating in Sydney Harbour on Christmas Day, but since she has no noticeable injuries, the evidence suggests she did not fall off the cliff and entered the water at another location. An investigation reveals lot of complications in Katrina’s personal life, including a secret relationship with a former biker, sexual harassment at her workplace, and rumours about her being linked to powerful figures from organized crime. In the end, a coronial inquest fails to turn up any conclusive answers about what caused Katrina’s death or who might have been responsible. December 27, 1928. Orrville, Ohio. Four-year old Melvin Horst leaves his home to play in the neighbourhood with friends, but never returns and a search of the area fails to turn up any trace of him. Over the course of the next two years, a number of different suspects would be arrested after allegations surface that Melvin’s disappearance was a revenge scheme orchestrated by local bootleggers because his uncle was the town marshal and rigidly enforced Prohibition. Two suspects are convicted of Melvin’s presumed abduction before their sentences are overturned while two other men make questionable confessions which cannot be backed up by evidence. Was Melvin Horst actually abducted by criminals who were involving in bootlegging? If so, could he have been passed around and raised under a new identity somewhere? February 10, 1990. Las Cruces, New Mexico. A pair of armed gunmen enter a bowling alley called the Las Cruces Bowl and bring everyone inside into the manager’s office. After stealing money from the safe, the assailants fire several bullets into seven people before fleeing the scene. Three of the victims – 33-year old Ida Holguin, 34-year old Stephanie Senac, and her 12-year old daughter, Melissia Repass – manage to survive the shooting, but the four other victims – 13-year old Amy Houser, 26-year old Steven Teran, his six-year old stepdaughter Paula Holguin, and his two-year old daughter Valerie Teran – wind up dead. While the crime generates a lot of publicity, the two perpetrators are never found or identified, and there is a lot debate about whether robbery was actually the true motive for this crime. March 5, 1974. Coconut Grove, Florida. 17-year old Amy Billig phones her father from her home and arranges to meet him at his workplace in order to borrow money to have lunch with friends. Amy is last hitchhiking next to a highway, but she never shows up to meet her father or her friends and is subsequently reported missing. After being informed that Amy was abducted by a gang of bikers, her mother, Susan Billig, spends the next several years attempting to track her down and even encounters a biker who claims to have bought and owned Amy for a time. The Billig family also has to endure two decades’ worth of harassing phone calls from another man who claims to have kidnapped Amy, but even after the caller is identified and arrested, no trace of Amy is ever found. Was Amy Billig actually abducted and held captive by bikers? Was the tormenting caller responsible for Amy’s disappearance? Or could an unknown third party have murdered her instead? July 28, 2013. Newtown, Connecticut. 50-year old Robert “Hoagy” Hoagland is last seen mowing the lawn outside his house. The following day, his wife, Lori, returns from a trip to Turkey, but Hoagy fails to pick her up at the airport as scheduled. When Lori returns home, she discovers that her husband is missing and that his vehicle and all of his personal possessions have been left behind. Investigators explore the possibility that Hoagy’s disappearance might be connected to drug addiction issues involving his son, Max, and a recent confrontation Hoagy had with some of Max’s criminal associates. However, they also cannot rule out the idea that Hoagy disappeared voluntarily, as he had once run away from his family on a previous occasion. September 12, 1982. Lewiston, Idaho. 21-year old Kristina Nelson and her 18-year old stepsister, Jacqueline “Brandy” Miller, leave Kristina’s apartment, but never return. That very same night, 35-year old Steven Pearsall vanishes after being dropped off at his workplace, the Lewiston Civic Theatre, where Kristina had previously held Steven’s job as a janitor. The disappearances are believed to be connected and a year-and-a-half later, Kristina and Brandy’s remains are found at the bottom of a ravine. Investigators explore potential connections with two other cold cases which took place within the Lewis-Clark Valley: the 1979 disappearance of 12-year old Christina White and the 1981 murder of 22-year old Kristin David. March 18, 1950. Columbia, Missouri. 13-year old Janett Christman shows up at a married couple’s residence to spend the evening babysitting their child. When the couple returns home, they discover that Janett has been raped and strangled to death by an intruder, and the local sheriff’s department would report having received a phone call from Janett while she was being attacked. The investigation uncovers a promising suspect named Robert Mueller, whom Janett had also babysat for, but there is not enough evidence to make an arrest. Four years earlier, another young Columbia woman was murdered in a strikingly similar fashion and a suspect went to the gas chamber for the crime. But could an innocent man have been executed while the real killer went on to murder Janett Christman? October 31, 1988. Hidalgo County, New Mexico. 29-year old David Stone, a stock market analyst from California, is seen wandering through the desert and exhibiting strange behaviour. Two days later, David’s abandoned car is discovered next to the highway, but David himself is nowhere to be found. Search efforts uncover a number of cryptic clues David left behind to suggest he was on some sort of spiritual journey related to the New Age movement. Over three years later, David’s remains are discovered in the desert, but the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown. May 28, 1995. Coconino County, Arizona. 28-year old Devin Williams, a long-haul truck driver from Kansas, recklessly drives semi-trailer truck into Tonto National Forest before it becomes stuck in some mud. After Devin exits the truck, witnesses see him displaying bizarre behaviour before he takes off into the woods and disappears. Devin had been in the midst of transporting a shipment from California to Kansas until he drove over 60 miles off-course for unknown reasons. Two years later, Devin’s skull is discovered near the bottom of a cliff, but no one can figure out his cause of death or why he wound up in the forest to begin with. January 24, 1987. Burbank, California. 35-year old Charlie Anderson, a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, returns to his suburban home with his wife and two children. He is shot to death after entering the house in what appears to be a burglary gone wrong. Over one year later, 43-year old Carol Montecalvo is shot to death inside her home, which is located only four blocks away from the Anderson residence, creating suspicion that the two crimes are connected. However, Carol’s husband, Dan Montecalvo, is eventually convicted of her murder, but maintains they were both attacked by intruders. Even though a woman named Suzan Brown confesses to being involved in both these crimes, her claims are dismissed. Was Dan Montecalvo actually responsible for his wife’s murder? Did the same person who shot Carol also kill Charlie Anderson? Or could Charlie have actually been murdered by someone he knew and trusted? June 19, 1984. Fernald, Ohio. 39-year old Dave Bocks shows up to work the graveyard shift at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center, a plant which processes uranium for nuclear weapons. Dave vanishes before his shift ends and evidence soon emerges that he fell into some molten liquid inside one of the plant’s furnaces. The authorities initially suspect that Dave could have committed suicide and find no evidence of foul play, but months later, the plant is implicated in a major scandal involving radioactive contamination, leading to speculation that Dave was murdered for threatening to blow the whistle on unsafe practices at his workplace. However, after Charles and another key witness recant their testimony, Ryan’s conviction is vacated and he is released from prison in 2013. August 15, 2002. Bassett, Virginia. 50-year old Michael Short and his 36-year old wife, Mary, are found shot to death inside their home, but the couple’s nine-year old daughter, Jennifer, is missing. Over one month later, Jennifer’s remains are discovered over 30 miles away in a rural area of North Carolina and it turns out she has been shot to death as well. The investigation turns up some promising leads, including a person of interest named Garrison Bowman, as well as an eyewitness sighting of an unidentified man who was seen parked across the street from the Short residence in a truck on the morning of the murders. However, these leads fail to bring about a resolution and no one can figure out a motive for this crime. April 19, 1988. Suncrest, Washington. 36-year old Doyle Wheeler, a former police officer from the San Diego Police Department, is attacked inside his home by a group of armed intruders. They force Wheeler to write a suicide note at gunpoint, hog-tie him, and fire a shot which grazes the side of his head, but he winds up surviving the attack. Evidence seems to link the intruders to another San Diego police officer named Donovan Jacobs whom Wheeler had testified against at a previous murder trial. While Wheeler suspects Jacobs of orchestrating the attempt on his life, Jacobs believes the incident never even happened and accused Wheeler of fabricating the entire story in order to set him up. March 29, 1995. Somerville, Massachusetts. 17-year old Deanna Cremin spends the evening with her boyfriend, Tommy LeBlanc, but fails to return home. The following morning, Deanna’s body is found behind a senior housing complex and she has been sexually assaulted and strangled to death. According to Tommy, he had walked Deanna halfway to her house before turning around and heading back home, but he denies any involvement in her murder. While Tommy and two other individuals are looked at as persons of interest, no one is ever charged with the crime. October 27, 1989. Woburn, Massachusetts. 14-year old Melanie Melanson tells her grandmother that she is planning to sleep over at her next-door neighbour’s house. When Melanie fails to return home the following day, her family learns that she actually sneaked away to attend a party in a wooded area on the outskirts of town. Two older boys are named as the last people seen with Melanie, but they give conflicting stories about what happened to her. While investigators are certain that something happened to Melanie at the party, no trace of her is ever found. July 10, 1958. Monterey County, California. 26-year old First Lieutenant Paul Whipkey leaves Fort Ord, the Army base where he is stationed. When he fails to return, he is declared AWOL before being declared a “deserter” 30 days later. Five weeks after he went missing, Whipkey’s abandoned car is discovered nearly 500 miles away in a remote section of Death Valley. Since Whipkey’s body cannot be found, the Army believes he suffered a mental breakdown and wandered into the desert and died. However, Whipkey’s family discovers troubling discrepancies to make them suspect the Army staged his disappearance. In 1982, Whipkey’s status is officially changed to “died in the line of duty”, but he is never found and the full truth about what happened to him is not revealed. April 26, 1980. St. Kilda, Australia. 43-year old Louise Faulkner and her two-year old daughter, Charmian Faulkner, are seen climbing into a car driven by an older man. Louise had told a neighbour she was planning to visit her boyfriend at his farm, but she does not return and both Louise and her daughter are reported missing. The investigation eventually focuses on George Sutherland, a married man who had been carrying on an affair with Louise and is believed to be Charmian’s biological father. 26 years later, the media receives an anonymous letter from someone who claims they heard George confess to Louise and Charmian’s murders. April 30, 1991. Santa Clara County, California. After spending the night in downtown San Jose with his friend, Jean, 36-year old Dick Hansen notices that he is being watched by a man in a car. When Dick and Jean leave the city in their respective vehicles, they are followed by this man for over ten miles, prompting Dick to leave the freeway and pull over. When Dick walks over to the man’s vehicle to confront him, he is shot twice before the driver flees the scene. Jean is left alive as a witness and the only theory investigators can formulate is that the murder might be connected to Jean’s personalized licence plate for the San Francisco 49ers football team. January 19, 1944. Chicago, Illinois. 54-year old Adele Born Williams returns to her eighth-floor suite at the Drake Hotel alongside her daughter, Patricia Goodbody. A woman dressed in black suddenly emerges from the bathroom and fires a shot into Adele’s head before fleeing the scene and Adele dies the following day. To everyone’s surprise, one police lieutenant suspects Patricia of being the killer and believes that the mysterious “woman in black” did not exist. While driving away, the two friends get into an argument which leads to Crystal being kicked out of the car. This is the last time Toni or her vehicle are ever seen and there is concern that her disappearance might be connected to her struggles with bipolar disorder. Two weeks after Toni goes missing, her car’s licence number is flagged in Camden, New Jersey, and years later, an anonymous letter surfaces which claims that Toni was killed after an altercation with a police officer. February 19, 1971. Sumter County, Florida. The body of a young woman is found floating beneath a bridge in Lake Panasoffkee. She has been strangled to death with a belt, but in spite of some intriguing clues, the victim cannot be identified and is named “Little Miss Panasoffkee”. Four decades later, investigators explore the possibly that she may have originally hailed from Greece and was murdered after travelling to the United States, but Little Miss Panasoffkee’s true identity cannot be conclusively established. August 9, 1976. Sumter County, South Carolina. A young man and woman are found shot to death by the side of a secluded dirt road, but they carry no identification. Investigators are able to uncover some promising leads, including a witness who claims he befriended the two victims and heard they were from Canada, and the discovery of the actual murder weapon in a suspect’s possession. August 18, 2010. Leduc County, Alberta. While staying with her infant son and a friend at a motel, 20-year old Amber Tuccaro decides to hitchhike to Edmonton. She never returns and is subsequently reported missing. Two years later, police release audio of a recording from Amber’s cell phone in which she can be heard conversing with a male driver on the night of her disappearance. Amber expresses fear that this man is taking her to a remote area and it seems likely she was murdered shortly after the call ended. Within days, Amber’s skeletal remains are discovered in a farmer’s field, but the voice of the male driver is never positively identified. October 12, 2011. Parkland County, Alberta. After spending the night playing in a soccer tournament, 36-year old wife and mother Jolene Cote stops to make some purchase at Wal-Mart before heading home. The following morning, Jolene’s husband wakes up and discovers her body on the grass outside their rural home, and it becomes apparent that she was attacked shortly after pulling into the driveway. September 13, 1991. Burbank, California. 37-year old Tom Roche makes plans to meet his spouse, Barbara Rondeau, for lunch, but never shows up. When Barbara returns to their apartment, she discovers that the front door is unlocked and Tom is missing. Six days later, Barbara receives an envelope containing some of Tom’s personal items, along with an anonymous confession letter to his murder. January 10, 1999. Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. While walking home from a friend’s house during the early morning hours, 17-year old Ricky Hochstetler is fatally struck by a vehicle on the shoulder of a county highway in a hit-and-run. The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department soon announce that parts from a Chevrolet truck or van were found at the scene, but an extensive investigation fails to turn up the vehicle which hit Ricky. As the years go on, the sheriff’s department start facing allegations that they mishandled crucial evidence and orchestrated a cover-up, and rumours spread that an off-duty police officer may have been responsible for Ricky’s death. February 11, 1979. Hana, Hawaii. Five men – 27-year old Scott Moorman, 31-year old Peter Hanchett, 38-year old Benjamin Kalama, 26-year old Patrick Woesner and 27-year old Ralph Malaiakini – leave the island of Maui on a fishing trip in a boat named the “Sarah Joe”. When a violent storm hits the area, the Sarah Joe and its crew do not return and an extensive search effort fails to find them. May 30, 1973. East Lansing, Michigan. The sister of 21-year old university student Henry Baltimore Jr. goes to meet him at his apartment, but discovers he is not there and eventually reports him missing. Nearly three months earlier, a pair of attackers had broken into Henry’s apartment to assault and rob him and police arrested a suspect named Roy Davis. After Henry testified against Davis at his preliminary hearing, Davis allegedly threatened him and Henry would go missing two days before Davis’ arraignment. February 13, 1984. Catonsville, Maryland. 39-year old teacher Oliver Munson leaves his home to drive to school, but never arrives. Oliver’s abandoned car is soon discovered a few blocks away and two weeks later, a stolen vehicle is found containing evidence which suggests that Oliver was murdered. One year earlier, Oliver had unknowingly purchased a stolen car from a career criminal Dennis Watson. After Watson was arrested, Oliver was called upon to testify as a witness against him and his disappearance took place only three days before Watson’s trial. September 1, 1974. Jackson County, Oregon. 28-year old Richard Cowden, his 22-year old wife Belinda Cowden, and their two children, five-year old David and five-month old Melissa, are in the midst of a camping trip when they inexplicably vanish from their campsite near Carberry Creek, leaving all their possessions behind. Seven months later, the entire family’s remains are found at a remote location seven miles away and it turns out they were the victims of foul play. Investigators discover that a recently paroled murderer named Dwain Lee Little was living in the area at that time and even though there is not enough evidence to implicate him, he eventually goes back to prison for another violent crime. June 7, 1992. Springfield, Missouri. After an evening of partying following their high school graduation, 19-year old Suzie Streeter and her 18-year old friend, Stacy McCall, decide to spend the night at Suzie’s house alongside Suzie’s 47-year old mother, Sherrill Levitt. They are last seen shortly after 2:00 AM, but later that day, Suzie, Stacy, and Sherrill, a.k.a. “The Springfield Three”, are all discovered to be missing from the house. The scene contains some bizarre clues, including a broken globe from the porch light and an odd answering machine message which is inadvertently erased, but no evidence of forced entry or a struggle. Over the years, there would be a number of leads, such as a convicted criminal who claimed to know what happened to the victims and a tip that their bodies were buried underneath the parking garage of a local hospital, but no trace of the Springfield Three is ever found.
