Ep 453The Trail Went Cold - Episode 345 - Gary McCullough and Lena Chapin

E

May 11, 1999. Barry County, Missouri. 34-year old Gary McCullough vanishes from his farm and his abandoned pick-up truck is found on a rural road five days later. Suspicion is directed towards Gary’s wife, Sandy, who was having an affair with another man named Kristopher Klemp and the couple immediately move in together before they get married. In 2006, Sandy’s 20-year old daughter, Lena Chapin, disappears and is not officially reported missing for years. Since Lena had previously made a tape-recorded confession that Sandy killed Gary and she helped her mother dispose of his body and cover up the crime, investigators believe that Sandy may have also gotten rid of Lena, but since no trace of Lena or Gary can be found, no charges are ever filed. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover the shocking story of two unsolved missing persons cases which took place nearly seven years apart from each other and are likely connected. If you have any information about the disappearance of Gary McCullough, please contact the Barry County Sheriff’s Office at (417) 847-3121. If you have any information on the disappearance of Lena Chapin, please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at (573) 729-3241. Ep 452The Trail Went Cold - Episode 344 - Jim Rice and Mark Groezinger

E

July 20, 1986. Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. 66-year old Jim Rice phones his daughter to let her know that he will be traveling to California to undergo shoulder surgery the following week, but he never arrives and no one ever hears from him again. Jim’s common-law wife, Astarte Davis-Rice, initially claims that he took off to Australia with another woman, but evidence soon emerges that Astarte has committed fraud to seize control of Jim’s estate. Astarte eventually winds up serving prison time for these offenses, but while the authorities suspect that she killed Jim and disposed of his body, there is not enough evidence to file murder charges and no trace of him is ever found. April 7, 1984. Golden, Colorado. The body of 29-year old Mark Groezinger is found inside his parked car on Lookout Mountain and he has been shot several times with a .38-caliber weapon. Mark’s wife, Judy Groezinger, comes under suspicion once investigators discover that she purchased a .38 in the days prior to the murder and stands to benefit from a substantial life insurance policy on her husband. Even though there are a number of discrepancies in Judy’s story and circumstantial evidence pointing to the involvement of multiple conspirators in a murder-for-hire plot, no one is ever charged with killing Mark. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two cold cases featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” in which a male victim was suspected of being murdered by his spouse. Ep 451The Trail Went Cold - Episode 343 - The Austin Yogurt Shop Murders (Part 2)

E

December 6, 1991. Austin, Texas. After responding to a fire at a local yogurt shop, the authorities discover the burned nude bodies of four victims who have all been shot in the head: 17-year old employees Eliza Thomas and Jennifer Harbison; Jennifer’s 15-year old sister, Sarah Harbison; and Sarah’s 13-year old friend, Amy Ayers. Nearly eight years later, investigators arrest four suspects for the murders and while the charges against two of them are eventually dropped, the other two – Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott – had confessed to the crime, so they wind up being convicted at their respective trials. However, both men’s convictions are overturned due to civil rights violations and forensic testing reveals the presence of DNA on the victims which does not match any of the alleged perpetrators. In 2009, the charges against the two defendants are dismissed and they are released from prison, but there are no conclusive answers about who actually committed the crime. Last week, in Part One of our series on the Austin Yogurt Shop Murders, we shared the basic facts about the case. This week, in Part Two, we will attempt to analyze and break down this crime by sharing all the different theories about what happened. If have any information about this case, please contact the Austin Police Department at (512) 472-TIPS (8477). Ep 449The Trail Went Cold - Episode 341 - Carol Ann Cole

E

January 28, 1981. Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The decomposed body of a young woman is discovered in the woods next to a remote logging road. The victim has been stabbed nine times, but since she cannot be identified, she becomes known as “Bossier Doe”. 34 years later, Bossier Doe is finally identified as 17-year old Carol Ann Cole, a Michigan resident who had run away from Texas a few months before she was killed. Suspicion turns towards John Chesson, the man who reported the discovery of Carol Ann’s body to the police, as his daughter was certain that Carol Ann had stayed at their family’s residence prior to her death and Chesson would go to prison for murdering another person several years later. Did John Chesson kill Carol Ann Cole or was someone else responsible? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore another tragic story about a Jane Doe who remained unidentified for three decades, but her murder is still unsolved. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Bossier Parrish Sheriff’s Office at (318) 965-2203. Ep 448The Trail Went Cold - Episode 340 - The Lost Boys of Hannibal

E

May 10, 1967. Hannibal, Missouri. 13-year old Joey Hoag, his 11-year old brother Billy Hoag, and their 14-year old friend Craig Dowell leave their homes to explore some caves, but never return. Even though a massive search effort is conducted of all the caves in the area, they fail to turn up any trace of the boys or evidence of what happened to them. Over the years, there is speculation that a construction project caused Joey, Billy and Craig to become trapped in a cave or that they may have been abducted and murdered by an unknown third party, but there is no conclusive evidence to support any scenario. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the tragic unsolved disappearance of three children who have become known as “The Lost Boys of Hannibal”. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Hannibal Police Department at (573) 221-0987. E

May 26, 1989. Kelowna, British Columbia. While taking a lengthy backpacking trip through Canada, 20-year old British national Charles Horvath cashes a cheque at a bank, but soon vanishes without a trace. After not hearing from him for several months, Charles’ mother, Denise Allan, travels to Kelowna to perform a search and learns that Charles was staying at a local campground until he abruptly disappeared and left his personal belongings behind. Over the years, there are a number of leads, including an anonymous note which states that Charles was killed at a party before his body was dumped in a lake, but no evidence is found to indicate what happened to him. Did Charles Horvath become a victim of foul play? If not, what actually caused his disappearance? Ep 446The Trail Went Cold - Episode 338 - Jay Given

E

May 15, 1981. East Chicago, Indiana. Jay Given, a 51-year old attorney and political operative, attends a political fundraiser at the local Elks Club, but is fatally shot through the back of the head while exiting through the building’s front doors. While a shell casing and a slug are collected from the crime scene and placed in an evidence drawer at the police station, it is later discovered that the items have been tampered with. The investigation turns towards the town’s deputy police chief, John Cardona, who attended the fundraiser, owned a similar firearm to the murder weapon, and had a motive to kill Jay. While a grand jury investigation takes place, the authorities ultimately believe that the evidence against Cardona is not strong enough to file charges. Was John Cardona actually responsible for the murder of Jay Given? Was a cover-up orchestrated to ensure the perpetrator would never be prosecuted? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore an unsolved case from a town where corruption and political maneuvering were rampant. If you have any information about this case, please contact the East Chicago Police Department at (219) 391-8400. E

February 14, 1982. Coconino County, Arizona. The decomposing body of a young woman is found in a remote area alongside Interstate 40 and while her exact cause of death cannot be determined, she is believed to be the victim of a homicide. Shortly before her death, Carolyn was seen at a truck stop with an older man and while he is suspected of being her killer, the man is never identified. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the tragic story of a Jane Doe who got her name back after four decades, but whose murder remains unsolved. Ep 443The Trail Went Cold - Episode 335 - Nancy Snow

E

November 6, 1980. Baltimore, Maryland. Nancy Snow, a 44-year old congressional fundraiser with the Republican National Committee, is picked up from a hotel by Paul Collins, the house-sitter at her apartment in Annapolis. Nancy soon vanishes without a trace, but Collins claims that she left on an impromptu trip to Florida with a man named “Captain Jay”, so she could spend several weeks crewing his yacht during a sailing trip through the Caribbean. However, Nancy’s family has a hard time believing this, particularly after discovering that Collins used her chequebook after she disappeared, but there is no conclusive evidence to prove he was responsible for her disappearance. Did Nancy Snow come to harm after leaving on a trip with the mysterious Captain Jay? Or did Paul Snow completely fabricate this entire story? Ep 442The Trail Went Cold - Episode 334 - Chad Langford

E

March 12, 1992. Huntsville, Alabama. SPC Chad Langford, an Army military policeman stationed at the Redstone Arsenal, performs a patrol of the base and sends in a radio call that he is investigating an abandoned vehicle. Shortly thereafter, Chad is found lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound to the head and since the Army believes that Chad was shot with his own weapon, they conclude that he staged an elaborate suicide in order to make it look like he was killed in the line of duty. However, Chad’s family notices a number of strange discrepancies which make them think he was murdered, as he had spoken about doing some secret undercover work investigating drug activity prior to his death. Was Chad Langford the victim of foul play before the whole thing was covered up? Or was the original suicide ruling correct all along? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a bizarre military-themed mystery which has been the subject of controversy for three decades. Ep 434The Trail Went Cold - Episode 327 - Lucia Kai Roberts

E

August 15, 1982. Boston, Massachusetts. The body of 16-year old Lucia Kai Roberts is found in Franklin Park and her cause of death is ruled to be strangulation. Over one year later, allegations emerge about a black girl who was sexually assaulted by multiple police officers at a private club and since this incident supposedly took place six weeks before Lucia was killed, there is speculation that she was the victim of the assault. The Boston Police Department is accused of being complicit in Lucia’s murder and orchestrating a major cover-up, but multiple investigations fail to generate any conclusive evidence to support this theory. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of the controversial unsolved murders in the history of Boston. Ep 433The Trail Went Cold - Episode 326 - John Cheek & Gordon Collins

E

December 2, 1993. Memphis, Tennessee. John Cheek, the 28-year old financial officer of a real estate firm, spends the evening having a dinner at a restaurant and is last seen heading towards his parked car. John’s abandoned vehicle is soon discovered near the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge and there is fear that he took his own life by jumping into the Mississippi River. Months later, a drifter matching John’s description is seen at a truck stop in Virginia, leading to speculation that he may be suffering from amnesia and forgotten who he was, but all attempts to find him are unsuccessful. April 19, 1991. Punta Chivato, Mexico. While on vacation from California, 34-year old Gordon Collins sets out in a fishing boat alongside his girlfriend, Anastasia Seals, and another couple, Wayne Shwatz and Arlean Burlington. A storm soon hits the area and the overturned boat, as well as Anastasia and Wayne’s bodies, are found floating in the Sea of Cortez the following day. Gordon and Arlean’s bodies cannot be found, but reports start circulating about a disoriented white male matching Gordon’s description wandering through Mexico. This leads Gordon’s family to believe that he survived the boating accident and is suffering from amnesia, but they are unable to track him down. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two unsolved missing persons cases in which each victim was believed to have lost their memory before they became a transient. Special thanks to listener Marcos Sainz for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information on the disappearance of John Cheek, please contact the Memphis Police Department at (901) 545-5700. Ep 428The Trail Went Cold - Episode 322 - Bobby Bizup

E

August 15, 1958. Boulder County, Colorado. While attending Camp St. Malo, a Catholic boys’ summer camp, a ten-year old hearing-impaired boy named Bobby Bizup vanishes without a trace. Nearly one year later, some of Bobby’s skeletal remains are discovered on a mountainside three miles from the camp and it is initially believed that he got lost and died of exposure. However, an investigation into child sexual abuse allegations against Catholic priests eventually reveals that some of these accused individuals worked as counsellors at Camp St. Malo during the time period Bobby went missing. In 2021, a man comes forward and provides the authorities with a skull which he claims had been given to him by his father. While DNA testing has not yet been performed, there is speculation that the skull belonged to Bobby and that foul play and a cover-up may have taken place. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unexplained death of Bobby Bizup, which has recently returned to the spotlight because of a shocking scandal. Over the years, investigators explore a number of different theories about how the John Doe wound up inside the chimney, but since his remains were carbonized, there are no traces of DNA available to make an identification. Ep 426The Trail Went Cold - Bonus Episode - Larry Race

E

For personal reasons, the latest episode of The Trail Went Cold has been delayed until March 29, 2023. In its place this week, please enjoy one of our exclusive bonus Patreon episodes from our archives, and we look forward to profiling a new case for you next week. Thanks for your patience. May 11, 1982. Duluth, Minnesota. 33-year old married couple Larry and Debbie Race celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary by taking their boat out onto Lake Superior for an evening cruise. Hours later, Larry returns to shore and calls for help, claiming that a leak prompted them to evacuate the boat in a life raft before they became separated. Debbie’s body is soon found washed up on shore and her cause of death is determined to be hypothermia. However, since the life raft cannot be found and there are a number of discrepancies in Larry’s story, authorities suspect foul play and eventually charge him with Debbie’s murder. Larry is convicted of the crime and receives a life sentence, but even after he is paroled 22 years later, Larry continues to maintain that Debbie’s death was an accident. Was Larry Race wrongly convicted for the nonexistent murder of his wife, or was justice properly served? Ep 425The Trail Went Cold - Episode 320 - Verna Bjerky

E

May 2, 1981. Hope, British Columbia. After spending the night at a friend’s house, 16-year old Verna Bjerky leaves on a trip to visit her boyfriend, but even though she plans on hitchhiking to her destination, she never arrives. Five months later, some of Verna’s personal belongings are discovered in a remote area, but there is no trace of her body. During this time period, a serial killer named Clifford Olson is charged and convicted of the murders of eleven children which took place in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. After he is sent to prison, Olson hints at possible involvement in Verna’s disappearance, but he is never conclusively linked to her case and Verna’s remains are never found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our podcast’s home country of Canada to explore the unsolved disappearance of Verna Bjerky, an Indigenous victim who has always been mistakenly classified as “white” in all of the official sources. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Upper Fraser Valley detachment of the RCMP at (604) 792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Ep 424The Trail Went Cold - Episode 319 - Natasha Jennings

E

July 8, 1997. Carson City, Nevada. While visiting her father on a trip from California, 16-year old Natasha Jennings is found dead inside a bedroom at his apartment. An electric fan is lying over Natasha’s body, her hair is damp, and even though traces of cocaine and methamphetamine are inside Natasha’s nostrils, no drugs can be found in her system. There are a few theories involving foul play, including the possibility that Natasha was murdered because her father was a drug informant, but the medical examiner cannot figure out her exact cause of death. Was Natasha the victim of a homicide, a drug overdose, or perhaps some sort of freak medical condition that no one was able to detect? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will explore a number of different scenarios as we cover the truly perplexing unexplained death of Natasha Jennings. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at (775) 887-2500. Ep 422The Trail Went Cold - Episode 317 - The Eleven Who Went to Heaven (Part 1)

E

August 4, 1971. Galveston, Texas. After spending the day at the beach, 14-year old Rhonda Renee Johnson and 13-year old Sharon Shaw fail to return home and their skeletal remains are found in a bayou months later. A suspect named Michael Lloyd Self is eventually taken into custody and confesses to the murders, but even though he maintains his confession was coerced and that he is innocent, Self is still convicted of the crime. Decades later, another convicted murderer named Edward Harold Bell becomes an alternate suspect after he sends confession letters to the authorities. Bell claims he was responsible for the murders of eleven female victims which took place in Texas during the 1970s and refers to them as “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven”. His confessions also hint that two of these victims may have been Rhonda Renee Johnson and Sharon Shaw. To commemorate the seven-year anniversary of “The Trail Went Cold”, we are releasing a special two-part episode on “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven” and exploring a number of unsolved murders which may have been committed by the same perpetrator. This week, Part 1 will cover the murders of Rhonda Renee Johnson and Sharon Shaw and the controversial conviction of Michael Lloyd Self. Special thanks to listener Amy Harber for narrating the opening of this episode. E

October 13, 1982. Morro Bay, California. The decomposed body of 43-year old Dian Harlin is discovered in a stand of trees next to a beach and she has been strangled to death with a leash belonging to one of her dogs. It turns out that Dian’s eccentric 47-year old husband, Hugh Harlin, had failed to report her missing for eleven days and since the couple was known for having a turbulent relationship, Hugh becomes a potential suspect in his wife’s murder. Four years later, Hugh inexplicably vanishes without a trace after his abandoned pick-up truck is discovered by the side of the highway. Investigators are unable to determine if Hugh’s disappearance is connected to Dian’s murder, but both cases are never solved. May 3, 1992. Polk County, Florida. After attending a rodeo, 31-year old Larry Costine and his 26-year old girlfriend, Melissa Jo Sermons, return to Larry’s mobile home. Larry’s nude body is eventually discovered inside the trailer and since he was shot four times and Jo has gone missing, investigators initially suspect that Jo killed Larry and went on the run. However, two decades later, law enforcement announces that they now believe Jo was a victim and was murdered by the same person who shot Larry. While Jo’s ex-boyfriend is considered to be the prime suspect, there is not enough evidence to charge him with the crime and Jo is never found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover two unsolved mysteries in which one half of a couple was murdered while the other half went missing. E

February 2, 2008. Saanich, British Columbia. 24-year old real estate agent Lindsay Buziak arrives for an appointment to show an expensive suburban house to an unidentified man and woman. When Lindsay’s boyfriend goes inside the residence to check on her, he discovers that she has been stabbed over 40 times and the mysterious couple have fled the scene. Over the years, there are a number of unconfirmed theories surrounding Lindsay’s murder. Even though Lindsay’s boyfriend and his family are cleared as suspects by the police, speculation still abounds that they were involved in the murder. It is also theorized that Lindsay’s death was connected to a massive drug bust and she may have been the victim of a professional hit. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of Canada’s most infamous unsolved cold cases, which has yet to reach a resolution after 15 years. Over the years, investigators explore a number of different leads, but they are unable to determine the girl’s identity or figure out who was responsible for killing her. Ep 416The Trail Went Cold - Episode 312 - Bryan Nisenfeld

E

February 6, 1997. Bristol, Rhode Island. Bryan Nisenfeld, an 18-year old freshman at Roger Williams University, vanishes after leaving an afternoon class and most of his possessions are found in his dorm room. Nearly seven months later, a severed foot and a shinbone are found washed up on a beach located a few miles from campus and while they are positively identified as belonging to Bryan, the rest of his remains are never recovered. Suspicion is placed on a former student and friend of Bryan’s who supposedly made a threatening phone call to him prior to his disappearance, but there is no evidence to prove that foul play took place. Was Bryan Nisenfield’s death a homicide, a suicide or an accidental fall into the water? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a cold case involving a university student which still does not a definitive resolution after nearly 26 years. Ep 415The Trail Went Cold - Episode 311 - Bernd Goericke & Andrea Scherpf

E

October 6, 1983. British Columbia, Canada. 27-year old Bernd Goericke and his 22-year old fiancée, Andrea Scherpf, are found shot to death next to a remote road. The couple hailed from West Germany and had been hitchhiking through Canada and an unidentified man driving a pick-up truck is seen using Andrea’s travellers’ cheques in the days following her death. Nearly six years later, a suspect named Andy Rose is charged with the crime based on testimony from a former friend who claimed she heard him confess to the murders. After two trials and two overturned convictions, the charges against Andy are dropped when DNA testing on a key piece of evidence excludes him as the perpetrator, but no one else is ever charged with killing Bernd and Andrea. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our home country of Canada to explore an unsolved double murder which led to a wrongful conviction. Ep 412The Trail Went Cold - Episode 308 - Ricky Jean Bryant

E

December 19, 1949. Juneau County, Wisconsin. A fire breaks out at the residence of four-year old Ricky Jean “Jeannie” Bryant, which burns her family’s farmhouse to the ground. While Jeannie’s remains cannot be found in the rubble, the authorities conclude that she died in the fire. As the years go by and Jeannie’s surviving siblings discuss what happened, they become troubled by a number of suspicious discrepancies, including the presence of an unidentified blonde woman who had stopped by the house while the fire was taking place. They begin to believe their mother and grandmother may have orchestrated Jeannie’s disappearance and that she could still be alive somewhere, so they manage to convince the authorities to open a new investigation. Did Ricky Jean Bryant actually die in the fire, or was the whole thing an elaborate set-up to fake her death? On this year’s final holiday-themed episode, “The Trail Went Child” tackles a truly unusual missing children’s case. Sixteen years later, one of Robert’s sons receives an anonymous letter from someone who says they are dying and want to confess to Robert’s murder. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a brutal unsolved crime which has often been described as Boston’s version of the Black Dahlia murder. Special thanks to listener Anil Adyanthaya for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Boston Police Department Unsolved Homicide Unit at (617) 343-4470 or the CrimeStoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477). Ep 407The Trail Went Cold - Episode 303 - Bob Harrod

E

July 27, 2009. Placentia, California. 81-year old Bob Harrod is discovered to be missing from his home and he has left his car and his eyeglasses behind. One month earlier, Bob had gotten married to Fontelle Heeter, a former spouse whom he had not seen in six decades, and she was scheduled to move in with him two days after he disappeared. Since Bob has a substantial net worth, the division of his estate causes a lot of friction between Fontelle and Bob’s daughters. There is speculation that Bob’s financial situation played a role in his disappearance, but he is never found and there is no physical evidence to indicate what happened to him. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the tragic case of Bob Harrod, whose life suddenly transitioned from a heartwarming love story to a baffling unsolved mystery. Ep 405The Trail Went Cold - Episode 301 - Lynn Amos & Megan Curl

E

December 11, 1995. Washington, D.C.. The fire department is summoned to a townhouse and discovers the burning body of 38-year old Lynn Amos on her bed. Lynn is still alive at the time and taken to a hospital with burns on the majority of her body, but she passes away ten days later. While investigators initially believe that Lynn’s death was an accident, traces of accelerants are found on the bed to indicate that arson took place and she was the victim of a homicide. There is speculation that Lynn was murdered because of something she uncovered at her job as a financial analyst, but the identity of her killer and their motive remain a mystery. March 26, 2000. Lufkin, Texas. The fire department arrives at the apartment of 26-year old Megan Curl and extinguishes a fire on her bed. They soon notice that Megan was tied to the bed, suffocated with a plastic bag and had her throat slashed before her body was set ablaze. The previous evening, Megan had gone to a pair of local nightclubs and shortly after she returned to her apartment complex, a man she supposedly met at one of the clubs showed up there to meet her. Even though one of Megan’s neighbours saw the man inside her apartment, he is never identified and the crime is never solved. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a pair of unsolved murders involving female victims who were set on fire on their beds. If you have any information about the murder of Lynn Amos, please contact the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia at (202) 727-4383. If you have any information about the murder of Megan Curl, please contact the Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.
