Ep 501The Trail Went Cold - Episode 389 - Janet Kuchinsky & Andre Lalonde
EJuly 10, 1999. Pierrefonds, Quebec. 42-year old Janet Kuchinsky leaves her residence in order to go out for a walk, but never returns. The following morning, Janet’s body is found in a wooded area next to a bicycle path located one kilometre from her home and she has been bludgeoned to death by a blunt instrument. Months later, a serial killer named William Patrick Fyfe is charged with the murders of a number of other women which also happened to occur in the West Island region of Montreal during this time period, but no evidence links him to Janet’s death and the crime is never solved. April 29, 1996. Senneville, Quebec. 51-year old Andre Lalonde, a veteran constable with the Montreal Urban Community Police, pulls over a Ford Tempo with a noisy muffler for a seemingly routine traffic stop before he is fatally shot by the driver. It turns out the vehicle was stolen and it is later found abandoned in an industrial section of Montreal after having been set on fire. There is speculation that in the weeks prior to Lalonde’s murder, the Tempo may have been used during a series of bank robberies, but while investigators believe they have a potential suspect in the shooting, they lack the evidence to file charges. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our home country of Canada to explore a pair of unsolved murders which took place in the West Island of Montreal. Special thanks to listener Talia Guilbault-Miscovich for narrating the opening of this episode. Ep 500The Trail Went Cold - Episode 388 - Arnold Archambeau & Ruby Brugieur
EDecember 12, 1992. Charles Mix County, South Dakota. After an all-night partying spree, 20-year old Arnold Archambeau, Arnold’s 18-year old spouse, Ruby Bruguier, and Ruby’s 17-year old cousin, Tracy Dion, get into a car accident and roll over into a frozen ditch. By the time help arrives at the scene, Tracy is still trapped inside the car, but Arnold and Ruby have disappeared. Three months later, Arnold and Ruby’s bodies are found submerged in water in the ditch over 75 feet away from the accident scene and their cause of death is determined to be exposure. However, the investigation turns up some odd discrepancies to suggest that Arnold and Ruby may have still been alive during the three-month window they were missing before their bodies were brought back to the ditch and placed there by an unknown party. Did the couple actually die of exposure on the same morning of the accident or did something else happen? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a bizarre unexplained death case which was featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”. Ep 499The Trail Went Cold - Episode 387 - The Father's Day Bank Massacre
EJune 16, 1991. Denver, Colorado. An armed gunman commits a robbery from the underground vault at the United Bank Tower on Father’s Day and makes off with $197,000 in cash. While the six employees from the vault are allowed to live, the assailant fatally shoots four guards: 41-year old Phillip Mankoff, 21-year old Todd Wilson, 33-year old William McCullom Jr. and 21-year old Scott McCarthy. Two-and-a-half weeks later, a 54-year old retired police officer named James King, who once worked as a guard at United Bank, is arrested and charged with the robbery and the murders. However, since the stolen money is never recovered and no physical evidence links King to the crime, the case against him is very circumstantial and King is acquitted of all charges at trial. Was James King actually responsible for this crime or did law enforcement allow the real perpetrator to get away with it? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial unsolved bank robbery/quadruple homicide which has become known as “The Father’s Day Bank Massacre”. However, in 2018, the authorities announce that new DNA testing has significantly weakened their case against Streater, making it impossible to take him to trial, so the murder charges are dropped. Did Patrick Streater actually kill Melissa Chilton and Tiffany Campbell or was someone else responsible? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a horrific double homicide which is often referred to as the “Tanning Bed Murders”. Ep 490The Trail Went Cold - Episode 378 - Leroy Drieth and Shelly Malone
EMay 30, 1968. Mead, Colorado. After leaving a party being held at his fiancee’s residence, 18-year old Leroy Drieth is killed when his car crashes into a tree. Prior to the crash, Leon had reportedly made a statement that he was going to kill himself, so his death is ruled to be a suicide. Decades later, Leroy’s sister learns some incriminating information about an altercation which supposedly took place at the party between Leroy and some of Patty’s family members. After Leroy’s body is exhumed, an autopsy uncovers a pair of knife wounds on his neck and while his cause of death is officially changed from “suicide” to “undetermined”, there are still no conclusive answers about how Leroy was killed. October 18, 1992. Fauquier County, Virginia. While horseback riding with a friend, 37-year old Shelly Malone is supposedly thrown to the ground before her horse stomps on her chest with such force that it ruptures her heart. While Shelly’s death is ruled to be an accident, her family notices suspicious behaviour from her friends, as well as alleged discrepancies in their story about how she was killed. After discovering small traces of blood inside her truck, Shelly’s family becomes convinced that she was murdered and that the so-called horseback riding accident was staged, but are unable to convince the authorities to reclassify her death. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a pair of suspicious unexplained deaths in which the victim’s loved ones were certain that foul play took place. EJanuary 28, 2008. Little Rock, Arkansas. 45-year old John Glasgow leaves his home and fails to show up for work at his office, so he is subsequently reported missing. In 2015, John’s skeletal remains are discovered at the base of a cliff only one mile from where his vehicle had been found, but a cause of death cannot be determined. Ep 483The Trail Went Cold - Episode 371 - Ginni Wood, Kelly Gaskins, and Ervin Williams
EMarch 10, 2007. Chocowinity, North Carolina. The mother of 19-year old university student Ginni Wood calls her up on her cell phone, but after their brief conversation ends, Ginni is never heard from again. Ginni told her mother she had travelled to Brownsville, Texas for spring break in order to visit her 19-year old best friend, Kelly Gaskins, and Kelly’s 23-year old boyfriend, Ervin Williams. However, it turns out that Ervin is a fugitive who fled North Carolina after failing to appear in court on numerous felony charges and Kelly is also wanted for a probation violation. This leads to speculation that the couple travelled across the border into Mexico in order to evade the authorities before Ginni joined them there, but Ervin and Kelly are also not heard from again. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the perplexing story of three American citizens who seemingly went missing together in Mexico and have not been seen for the past 17 years. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at (252) 946-0101 or the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation at (919) 662-4500. Ep 482The Trail Went Cold - Episode 370 - Jeffrey Digman, Billy Ray Hargrove, and Mike Carmichael
EJanuary 22, 1989. Temecula, California. The housemate of 30-year old Marine Captain Jeffrey Digman returns to their residence and discovers that Jeffrey has been shot to death inside his bedroom. Since a gun Jeffrey owns is lying next to him, his death is ruled to be a suicide and investigators theorize that he had become despondent over a recent transfer to Puerto Rico. However, Jeffrey’s parents discover some suspicious discrepancies to make them suspect he was murdered and while his cause of death is eventually changed from “suicide” to “undetermined”, there are no conclusive answers about how he was killed. February 20, 1992. South Korea. 30-year old Army Staff Sergeant Billy Ray Hargrove is found hanging by a parachute cord from a tree outside his residence and his death is ruled to be a suicide. Billy Ray’s best friend, 37-year old Army Sergeant First Class Mike Carmichael becomes convinced that Billy Ray was murdered and vows to perform his own independent investigation. However, six weeks later, Mike is discovered hanging by a parachute cord from a locker handle inside his barracks office. Even though Mike’s death is also ruled to be a suicide, his family believes that he was murdered in order to cover up the truth about Billy Ray’s death. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two suspicious and controversial suicide cases from the military involving three different servicemen whose families believed were the victims of foul play. Ep 479The Trail Went Cold - Episode 368 - Lynne Harper, Part 2
EJune 9, 1959. Clinton, Ontario. After failing to return home, 12-year old Lynne Harper is reported missing and her body is discovered in a woodlot two days later. She has been sexually assaulted and strangled to death with her own blouse and suspicion turns towards her 14-year old classmate, Steven Truscott, who claims that he gave Lynne a ride to the highway on his bicycle and saw her climb into a passing car. Steven is soon charged, convicted and sentenced to death for Lynne’s murder, but his sentence is commuted to life imprisonment and he is paroled in 1969. Decades later, Steven files a successful appeal to have his conviction overturned, but there is still a lot of debate about who was actually responsible for Lynne Harper’s murder. Ep 473The Trail Went Cold - Episode 362 - Margaret Dash, Retha Hiers, and Donyelle Johnson
EJune 14, 1974. Clearwater, Florida. After borrowing her daughter’s car and leaving her home, 38-year old Margaret Dash never returns and the abandoned vehicle is discovered in St. Petersburg one month later. It turns out that Margaret had been involved in an extramarital affair with a man named Cleveland Hill, who supposedly threatened to kill her. Over the next 15 years, two other Florida women – 43-year old Retha Hiers and 21-year old Donyelle Johnson – also vanish without a trace after conducting an affair with Cleveland and there are allegations that he made threats against them as well. While there is suspicion that Cleveland was responsible for all of these disappearances, there is not enough evidence to implicate him and the three missing women are never found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a trio of unsolved missing persons cases which are linked together by the same man. If you have any information about the disappearance of Margaret Dash, please contact the Clearwater Police Department at (727) 562-4242. EJanuary 11, 1984. Ypsilanti, Michigan. Two armed men enter a real estate and insurance office before one of them fires a shot into the neck of the 47-year old owner, Jack Brown. Ep 471The Trail Went Cold - Episode 360 - Patrick Mullins
EJanuary 27, 2013. Bradenton, Florida. After taking his boat out onto the Braden River, 52-year old Patrick Mullins fails to return home and the abandoned boat is discovered several miles away in Egmont Channel the following day. Nine days after he vanished, Pat is found floating in Tampa Bay and it turns out he was fatally shot through the head and weighed down in the water with an anchor tied to a rope wrapped around his body. His official cause of death is listed as “undetermined”, but while law enforcement leans towards suicide, Pat’s loved ones notice some odd discrepancies to make them believe he was murdered. A family friend displays some suspicious behavior to suggest he might have knowledge of what happened, but there is not enough evidence to implicate him. Was Patrick Mullins the victim of foul play or was his death actually an elaborate suicide? For our first “Trail Went Cold” episode of 2024, we shall explore a controversial case which was featured on the Netflix reboot of “Unsolved Mysteries”. If you have any information about the death of Patrick Mullins, please contact the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at (941) 747-3011 or Manatee County Crimestoppers at (866) 634-TIPS (8477). Ep 469The Trail Went Cold - Episode 359 - Update, Part 4
ESince “The Trail Went Cold” originally launched in February 2016, we have featured over 400 cold cases and unsolved mysteries on the podcast. A number of these cases have wound up either being solved or having major developments, so things have reached the point where we have been able to release four special “update” episodes over the past four years. On this particular episode, we’ll be discussing the surprising updates in such cases as the 1930 abduction of two-year old Mary Agnes Moroney, the 1987 murder of six-year old Jeremy Stoner, and how the investigation into the 1945 disappearance of Mary Jane Vangilder wound up leading to the unexpected identification of another decedent. These are just some of the cases we’ll be discussing in our fourth special “update” episode of “The Trail Went Cold”. Ep 468The Trail Went Cold - Episode 358 - Amber Crum
EDecember 26, 1983. Dallas, Texas. Two-year old Amber Crum is reported missing after James Britt Monroe, the live-in boyfriend of Amber’s mother, Stephanie Hughes, informs police that Amber was abducted from his parked pick-up truck while he was inside a grocery store. Weeks later, Britt is arrested on suspicion of murder after Stephanie implicates him in Amber’s death. However, when Stephanie testifies during a preliminary hearing, she recants her original story, so Britt is released from custody and a grand jury declines to indict him due to lack of evidence. In 2007, a convicted child murderer named David Elliott Penton is looked at as a person of interest in Amber’s disappearance, but there is no evidence to implicate him. Was Amber actually the victim of a stranger abduction? Or was someone close to her responsible for her disappearance? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial missing children’s case which has gone without answers for 40 years. Special thanks to listener Jana Goetz for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Dallas Police Department at (214) 670-4426. Ep 467The Trail Went Cold - Episode 357 - Paul Logan and Tracey Mertens
EDecember 23, 1993. Consett, England. 25-year old delivery driver Paul Logan brings a food order from a Chinese takeaway restaurant to a remote farm, but when he arrives, the property’s owners inform him that they never placed the order. When Paul attempts to leave, he is ambushed at the farm’s gate and bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument. It becomes apparent that the takeaway order was a set-up to lure Paul to his death and that multiple people were involved. But even though rumours circulate that Paul was murdered by someone with a personal grudge against him, no one is ever charged with the crime. December 23, 1994. Eaton, England. 31-year old Tracey Mertens is discovered on the steps of a local church with burns on 95 % of her body, so she is rushed to the hospital and passes away twelve hours later. Before her death, Tracey tells police that she was abducted from her former residence in Birmingham by two black men, who drove her to Eaton and set her on fire after pouring a can of petrol over her body. Suspicion mounts that Tracey was targeted because her spouse owed a drug debt to some dangerous people, but he denies any knowledge of what happened and Tracey’s killers are never identified. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel to the United Kingdom to cover a pair of unsolved murders which took place right before Christmas one year apart from each other. Ep 466The Trail Went Cold - Episode 356 - Cathy Jo Bohlken
EDecember 26, 1993. Monticello, Iowa. After she fails to show up for work, 22-year old Cathy Jo Bohlken is found dead inside the bedroom of her apartment. She has been bound with duct tape and has a plastic bag over her head and was sexually assaulted and stabbed at least 54 times. Two years later, Travis Jamieson, a friend of Cathy’s younger brother who was only 16 years old at the time of the crime, is charged with the murder. Even though DNA testing links Travis to a semen sample found in Cathy’s body, there is no other physical evidence against him. Since Travis’ defence attorneys bring up issues with the validity of the DNA testing at his trial, he winds up being acquitted and set free. Did Travis Jamieson get away with the murder of Cathy Jo Bohlken or was someone else actually responsible? We will attempt to answer that question, as we present this month’s first “Trail Went Cold” episode about cases which took place around Christmastime. Ep 463The Trail Went Cold - Episode 353 - The Chen Family Murders
EOctober 8, 2014. Guilderland, New York. The bodies of a Chinese immigrant family – 39-year old Jin Feng Chen, his 38-year old wife Hai Yan Li, and their two sons, 10-year old Anthony and 7-year old Eddy – are found inside their bungalow and they have been stabbed and bludgeoned to death. While Jin Feng worked at a local Chinese restaurant, rumours circulate that he may have been involved in illegal activity, such as the trafficking of undocumented workers, and this led to his family being killed. However, these rumours are never substantiated, so the motive for the crime and the identity of the perpetrator is never determined. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the Chen family murders, a brutal crime involving four victims in which there has been a surprisingly low number of strong leads. Ep 462The Trail Went Cold - Episode 352 - Rae Ann Mossor and Norman Ladner
EFebruary 4, 1986. Roanoke, Virginia. 21-year old Rae Ann Mossor is found dead on the street outside her estranged boyfriend’s house with a shotgun wound to the chest. The shotgun is lying on the trunk of a nearby parked car and according to her boyfriend, Rae Ann had implied she would kill herself if he did not reconcile their relationship and he said he heard the fatal gunshot shortly after she left his residence. While Rae Ann’s death is officially ruled to be a suicide, her parents discover some suspicious discrepancies to make them believe she was murdered. August 21, 1989. Pearl River County, Mississippi. 17-year old Norman Ladner leaves his family’s farm to go hunting in a wooded area on their property. When Norman fails to return, his father eventually discovers his body in the woods with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The local authorities rule that Norman’s death was a suicide and that he likely shot himself with his own hunting rifle, but his parents dispute this and uncover some strange details which make them suspect that Norman may have been murdered after stumbling upon a drug deal. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover two controversial suicide cases featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” in which the victims’ loved ones believed that foul play had taken place. Ep 461The Trail Went Cold - Episode 351 - Martha Moxley (Part 2)
EOctober 31, 1975. Greenwich, Connecticut. After she fails to return home the previous night, the body of 15-year old Martha Moxley is discovered in her backyard. She has been stabbed in the neck and bludgeoned with a golf club and pieces of the shattered club are traced to the residence of the Skakels, a prominent family from the neighborhood. Decades later, one of the family’s children, Michael Skakel, who was 15 at the time of the crime, is charged and convicted of Martha’s murder. However, Michael’s conviction winds up being vacated on two separate occasions due to ineffective counsel at his trial, so he is released from prison. In 2020, the state announces that they have no plans to retry Michael, meaning there are no conclusive answers about what happened. Did Michael Skakel actually kill Martha Moxley or was someone else was responsible? Last week, in Part One of our series about this controversial murder, we shared the basic facts of the case. This week, we will attempt to analyze and break down the crime by exploring all the different theories about what happened. Ep 458The Trail Went Cold - Episode 349 - Ronald Sisman and Elizabeth Platzman
EOctober 31, 1981. New York City. The bodies of 39-year old Ronald Sisman and 20-year old Elizabeth Platzman are discovered inside Ron’s apartment in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan. Both victims have been shot to death, execution-style, and since the apartment was ransacked, there is speculation that the crime might be drug-delated. However, notorious serial killer David Berkowitz, who is serving time in prison for the “Son of Sam” murders, eventually shares information that Ron and Liz were killed by associates of his that were members of a Satanic cult and looking to retrieve a snuff film. Was there any truth to Berkowitz’s claims or were the two victims murdered for entirely different reasons? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we profile an unsolved double murder which took place on Halloween and has often been surrounded by wild conspiracy theories. EOctober 31, 1981. Wahneta, Florida. The mother of 13-year old Tina Marie Janose wakes up to discover that she is missing from their mobile home. That same morning, Tina Marie’s body is found twelve miles away on Interstate 4 and it turns out she was abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered before the killer tossed her off a highway overpass. Over the years, James Norman Ulmer and Frank Potts, a pair of sex offenders who each wind up going to prison for other crimes, pop up on the radar as potential suspects in Tina Marie’s murder. While there is compelling case to be made for Ulmer or Potts being the perpetrator, there is not enough evidence to conclusively implicate either of them and the crime is never solved. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the murder of Tina Marie Janose, a horrifying cold case which took place on Halloween 42 years ago. Ep 455The Trail Went Cold - Bonus Episode - Unsolved Mysteries Guilty Pleasures
ESince we are currently on vacation, “The Trail Went Cold” will not be releasing a new episode this week. Instead, please enjoy one of our exclusive bonus Patreon episodes from our archives. Thanks for your patience. During its 15-year run on television, “Unsolved Mysteries” profiled a lot of memorable murders and missing persons cases, but the show was just as well-known for its paranormal-themed stories involving ghosts, UFOs and other supernatural occurrences. Consequently, they wound up producing their fair share of segments which turned out to be silly and ridiculous, but sometimes, the sillier they were, the more entertainment value they had. On this bonus Patreon episode, I shall discuss some of these goofy-but-entertaining segments, as I count down my top 10 “Unsolved Mysteries” guilty pleasures. The Trail Went Cold is produced and edited by Magill Foote. All music is composed by Vince Nitro.

Ep 454The Trail Went Cold - Episode 346 - Linda Kerr

Seven years later, one of Linda’s brothers, Keith Kerr, is charged with murdering his sister-in-law, Carol Kerr, but while there is suspicion that Keith could have also harmed Linda, no evidence is found to implicate him. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a puzzling missing persons case which has gone unsolved for over 47 years. In addition, we will be profiling three other cold cases involving teenage girls which took place in Orlando in 1976: the disappearance of 14-year old Mabel Andrews, the death of 14-year old Nancy Grace Daniel, and the death of an unidentified decedent known only as the “Orlando Jane Doe”. If you have any information about the disappearance of Linda Kerr, please contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 254-7200.
