#126: Are You Protecting Your Team Too Much?
Thoughtful leaders sometimes get caught in the trap of trying to shelter their people from harm. While this can be a good thing, it can also slow the growth and development of your team members if they never need to fight their own battles or solve their own problems. In this episode, I look at protective leadership, some of the common causes and then the situations where I see it occur most commonly. You can use these scenarios to see whether you may need to adjust your own approach to your team! Like the Show? #125: How to Build Trust In Your Team
Trust is a vital ingredient in a productive, cohesive team. When people in a team trust each other, they feel like they are in a safe environment, free from blame. People in a trusting team are much more likely to show commitment to the team and to feel compelled to do a great job. For leaders, trust is important because they need to believe that their team members will be able to get the job done and work well with others. However, trust goes both ways. Not only do you need leaders to trust the team members, team members also need to trust the leadership. A low trust environment can destroy confidence as people believe their boss is out for themselves and don't have their best interests at heart. Compared with people at low-trust companies, people at high-trust companies report: 74% less stress, 106% more energy at work, 50% higher productivity, 13% fewer sick days, 76% more engagement, 29% more satisfaction with their lives, 40% less burnout. – Article: The Neuroscience of Trust, Paul J. #119: Too Collaborative? Let's Avoid This Leadership Trap
Collaborative and inclusive leadership can be great when used in moderation. But what happens when leaders collaborate too much? This is generally a good thing… but it can come with some issues. #115: Workplace Issues? Take These Powerful Leadership Actions
If you've ever encountered tricky behaviour or performance issues in your team, it's not pleasant. Sometimes leaders will wait until the problem "sorts itself out" or goes away, instead of taking action to fix it. The only problem with this approach is that these issues hardly ever go away by themselves. It often takes some powerful and courageous leadership action to make progress. In this episode, I'll discuss four of the powerful actions you can take to address the issues in your team, rather than waiting for them to go away on their own. There is no silver bullet solution for these problems either – you might have to try some different approaches and see what works. Your team is different from everyone else's. But the 4 leadership actions presented in this episode are usually what it takes to make a positive change. How Being More Strategic Improves Your Leadership
Many people think that being strategic is just for company CEOs and executives, but this isn't necessarily the case. In this episode, I'll introduce some of the top strategic skills that I believe make for better leadership. You might not feel like you have a strategic bone in your body, but it really doesn't need to be too complicated. In my opinion, strategy can be summed up by knowing where you want to be, developing an approach to getting there and having a framework for deciding what to do as things happen along the way. Being strategic can help every leader achieve their goals and identify a better way to get from point A to point B! Like the Show? Why Leaders Must Set Boundaries at Work
Workplaces are busy, and different people have their own priorities that they are focused on. That's why to be productive and effective, leaders need to carve out their own space. Setting boundaries is critical because if you're not working towards you or your team's priorities, then you're probably working on someone else's! Boundaries prevent us from being stepped on, run over or controlled by the people around us. Setting boundaries can take courage, because you may need to push back on others and have a negotiation. But failing to do so will often leave you in a position where you can't do your best leadership. Book Your Discovery Coaching Session I invite you to a 90-minute Discovery Coaching Session, where we will: Get clear on your most important goals and what is most important to you Identify blockers and limiting beliefs that are holding you back; and Develop key actions you can take to move forward and make progress. Want MORE Out of Your Leadership?
As part of my coaching, I wanted a simple model I could use as a reference to help leaders target strengths and shortcomings in their leadership. So, I came up with the MORE model of leadership which stands for Myself, Others, Results-Focus and Effectiveness. The model is simple, but I think it covers most (if not all) of the most important aspects of leadership. I included it in this episode because I believe this can also be a good tool for leaders to see whether they have the various aspects covered, or if there are any gaps that warrant their attention. You can see the MORE leadership model here: What do you think of it? Let me know in the comments below! Think You Know What Your Team Wants? Think Again!
Have you ever fallen into the trap where you think you know what your team members want? And perhaps you've made assumptions based on your own experience and preferences. In other words, you've assumed you know what your team members like, dislike or want to achieve in their careers, because you think they are just like you! This is a cognitive bias known as the "False Consensus" effect. Basically, this means in our head, we tell ourselves that other people are just like us. Unfortunately, this can have a negative impact on the way we lead our teams. Common Ways You Might Be Reducing Accountability In Your Team
Building team accountability is a great way to improve performance in a team. Without accountability, leaders often feel like they are going it alone. If you are the only one who really cares about the quality of the work in your team, it can feel like you're running around trying to fix everything by yourself. That's why we want to be doing things that increase accountability, instead of damage it. Sometimes as leaders, we do things that damage accountability in our teams, even without meaning to. Avoiding a Negative Team Culture
The way that leaders behave can have a dramatic impact on the way our team operates. Leadership behaviour can be contagious, so we need to make sure we're sending the right signals to our team members. Like it or not, we are role models for our team members, and they'll often behave the way they think we want them to, even if they don't really believe in it. In this episode, I look at the impact of negative leadership behaviour and how it can shape the attitudes and actions of our team members. What to Do When You Have Too Many Priorities
Many organisations seem to be trying to do too much, with too little. The list of "critical" initiatives and projects seems to keep getting bigger. Committing to lots of priorities seems like a good idea. It looks good to say you'll complete 100 initiatives this year. The problem is that in reality, it looks more like you'll complete 20 of those initiatives. Often the pressure flows down hill. The senior leaders at the top set too many priorities, and then everyone else needs to deal with it. Are You Showing the Signs of a Self Serving Leader?
Self-serving leaders put themselves ahead of other people in their organisation, including their teams. Most of us have a tendency to believe that some leaders are selfish and out for themselves, while others aren't. I believe that our self-serving tendencies lie on a spectrum, it's not black or white. Yes, there will always be the political animals and the power players, but everyone else sits on this spectrum too. Sometimes, the environment we work in can bring out these harmful characteristics that make you put yourself first.
