Ep 422Olympic Coach Ben Titley Shares Theories on Removing Lactic Acid for Swimmers

We sat down with the head coach for the HPC - Toronto, Ben Titley. Titley has been in the coaching game at the highest level for a long time now, both in Canada and his home country of Great Britain. He shares stories about coaching Olympic and world champions such as James Gibson, Mel Marshall, Penny Oleksiak, and more. One topic Ben gets into that many maybe don't consider is lactic acid and what is the most successful way of removing it after a race for a swimmer. Titley notes that if you ever see Swim Canada at a Pro Swim in the US, they will do a full swim set after their racing session, as Titley sees this as an optimal way to flush the body of the lactic build-up. Ep 423Will Regan Smith Make the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team in These Events?

World champion and World record holder Regan Smith came off of some brutal winter training to win the 100m back (59.75), 100m fly (58.55), and 200m fly (2:10.10) at the 2021 San Antonio Pro Swim (JAN). She scratched out of the 200 back final, but swam the 200 free notching second (1:59.49). By my math, Regan is exactly where she needs to be this early in the season. I see Regan back at her 2020 Des Moines Pro Swim times as she works through Feb and March. 2020 DES MOINES PRO SWIM - REGAN SMITH times right before the COVID shutdown: 100 BACK - 58.1 200 BACK - 2:06.1 100 FLY - 57.34 200 FLY - 2:06.39 WAY TOO EARLY PREDICTIONS FOR THE 2021 SUMMER I'm very optimistic the 2021 Olympics will happen, and I'm optimistic about Regan's performance at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha. Regan makes the U.S. Olympic Team in the 100 and 200 backstroke, and I think she make Team USA in 100 fly, dropping a 56.5, provided she swims it. She also makes the team in 200 fly, ripping a 2:05.1, provided she swims it. But who cares what I think…what do you think? This is a Gold Medal Media production presented by SwimOutlet.com. Ep 421Leigh Ann Caldwell, Swammer & NBC News Capitol Hill Correspondent

Leigh Ann Caldwell is a swammer with a big career as a network news correspondent. In many ways, her unique vocation is all about politically unearthing what matters right now and reporting it as the first draft of history to a national audience. Sounds like fun, right? I know it’s a career a lot of young swimmers might be dreaming of—even planning for. For Leigh Ann the dream started very young, and her journey has been hard-fought. She has earned her position on the national media stage. I’d like to think her success has a lot to do with her deep swimming roots, and I’m pretty sure she’d agree. Growing up in Las Vegas as an age grouper Leigh Ann swam for The Gold, and her coach might be a name you recognize — Bob Bowman. It’s almost funny looking back overtime, but even as an age grouper, under Bob’s guidance, Leigh Ann knew she was a distance swimmer. Leigh Ann went on to accomplish what a lot swimmers strive for—a scholarship to swim at a DI university. Leigh Ann swam for N.C. State, graduating a year ahead of the current Wolfpack Head Coach, Braden Holloway. In this SwimSwam Podcast, Leigh Ann shares insight into Coach Holloway and NC State’s current success, and she dives-deep into the steps that it took for her to make it as a network news correspondent. Ep 420Kristen Stege Describes the Upside of Switching From Sprinting to Distance

We sat down with sprinter turned distance ace Kristen Stege. Stege, now a sophomore at Tennessee, just dropped a PB 9:40 1,000 free in a dual meet against Georgia. She made headlines in February when she won the AAC title in the 1,650, which was her first time ever competing in a 1,650. Stege takes us through her last year of swimming and why she has actually warmed up to distance swimming after adamantly opposing it as an age group swimmer. Ep 419Todd DeSorbo Breaks Down Epic Dual Meet Finishes for UVA Men's & Women's Teams

We sat down with University of Virginia head coach Todd DeSorbo, whose Cavaliers are coming off of some exciting dual meets in the last couple of weeks. For the men's team, it was a tight battle with UNC that came down to the last relay, a trend that DeSorbo says has been unusually common for the men since he's arrived in Charlottesville. For the women's team, it was the next day versus NC State that came down to the final relay after UVA's 1-2 finishers in the 1,000 were both DQ'ed for being in the wrong lanes. Ep 418McKeown's Coaching Staff Explains Methodology of 17-on, 4-off Training Cycles

We sat down with Chris Mooney (head coach of University of Sunshine Coast in Australia) and Dave McKean (head of physical performance at University of Sunshine Coast) to talk about their 21-day training cycles that we covered in our interview with 2020 Swimmer of the Year Kaylee McKeown. They each give their perspectives on why they wanted to try this method out and how it's worked so far, McKean coming from a heavily scientific background and Mooney wanting to push the boundaries of innovation within coaching and the sport of swimming. Ep 416SSPC: Morgan Scroggy on Making an Olympic Trials Final as the 41st Seed

We sat down with Morgan Scroggy, the Pan Pacific and World University Games champion who is the lowest-seeded athlete (41st, 200 back) to have made a final at the US Olympic Trials in the last 20 years. This is significant as it was the line USA Swimming decided to make for the Wave II Olympic Trials meet, basing the cuts on the times of the 41st seeded athlete in each event as of the day they came out (January 26, 2021). Scroggy competed in 3 different Olympic Trials (04, 08, 12) and candidly shares her experience from each of them, highs and lows. She details what the Olympic dream meant to her as an athlete, and what the process of chasing it did for her 10 years removed from her swimming career. Ep 415SSPC: Emily Escobedo Explains Pros and Cons of Unexpectedly Making the National Team

We sat down with Emily Escobedo, the breaststroking machine that has been on fire this past year. Escobedo had a successful season in the ISL Budapest Bubble, helping a rebuilt New York Breakers team to a semi-final appearance. Less than a month after that, Escobedo suited up in practice and came within .2 of a lifetime best in the 200-yard breaststroke. But she wasn't done there. At the January Pro Swim in Richmond, she topped the field in both the 100 (1:07.11) and 200 (2:23.46) breast, going even faster than the likes of Lilly King, who competed in San Antonio. Escobedo talks about all of these swims as well as her breakout into the pro swimming scene, making the national team in 2018 after not expecting to. Escobedo walks us through the process of trying to make things work as a pro swimmer without having a ton of resources readily available to her at that time. Ep 414SSPC: International Swimmers' Alliance Launches With World’s Top 120 Elites

Matt Biondi, an 11-time Olympic medalist, details his progress to further athletes’ rights as the manager of the International Swimmers’ Alliance. The Alliance, an association of the world’s top 120 elite swimmers, is ready to officially get down to business after 20 months of development. For Matt, a three-time Olympian, this journey has been far, far longer. The Olympic icon has been a pioneer in this effort going back to the 1980s when Olympians were not allowed to earn endorsement dollars until after they officially retired from competition. Matt fought the system ultimately winning the right to earn endorsement revenue as an active swimmer, but not until the twilight of his career. His efforts really benefited the stars who followed him, like Janet Evans, Michael Phelps and Caeleb Dressel. While the Alliance is not a union, it is an association of elite swimmers and a potentially powerful voice in negotiating improved economic conditions. In this SwimSwam Podcast Matt shines light on the Alliance’s first steps, the baby steps in his words, toward a new future of improved athletes’ rights. Ep 410CEO Swim Series: SwimSmart Entrepreneurs Explain Their Success

SwimSmart (https://www.swimsmarttoday.com) co-founders Karl Hamouche and Mike Peterson drop-in on the SwimSwam Podcast explaining how they've flexed their entrepreneurial muscle, building one of the fastest growing companies in our sport. Karl Hamouche is the founder of Swim Smart and co-inventor of the Squeezline. He moved to Iowa from Lebanon when he was 12 years old, joined the local swim team, and instantly was part of a family in a place 8,000 miles away from home. Years later, he ended up coaching for that same team, expanding it by starting a new satellite, and helping them win their first club state title. Karl studied biology and exercise science at Iowa State University and received his medical degree at the University of Iowa. With his coaching and swimming background, Karl is the intersection of theory and practice, the book and the real world. Karl still swims almost everyday and competes multiple times a year. His daily interaction with the water gives him new ideas and insights into how we can all help to improve our swimming. Michael Peterson is currently the head coach of ACAC in Iowa, and prior to that he was the top assistant coach with the Colorado Stars. While with the Stars he helped in the development of Olympic Gold Medalist Missy Franklin and Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce. As the head age group coach Michael was a major contributor to the Colorado Stars winning 6 consecutive Colorado state titles and 2 Junior National Championship team titles. As an athlete, Michael was a standout prep swimmer at Ames High School where he earned 9 high school All-American certificates. He continued his swimming career at the Denver University where he not only served as team captain, but also set 4 school records. Ep 409SSPC: Austin Surhoff on How 45-Minute Training Days Led to Best Times at Age 30

We sat down with NCAA-champion Austin Surhoff, who turned some heads by racking up 2 lifetime bests at the Richmond Pro Swim. Surhoff went 22.5 in the 50 free and 49.6 in the 100 free, very solid times that put him on the list for potentially finaling at Olympic Trials. As someone who was always a grinder in practice but didn't necessarily love it, Surhoff takes us through the process that has helped him embrace and enjoy swimming again. This routine includes 45-minute workouts, just enough to make gains and keep his attention. Surhoff emphasizes that what he's doing is manageable and sustainable for anyone at any point in life to see success. We sat down with British music producer and activist Ed Accura, who recently announced a sequel to his wave-making documentary “A Film Called Blacks Can’t Swim", scheduled for release in May 2021. The new film, titled “Blacks Can’t Swim The Sequel,” will feature scripted scenes combined with real interview footage of 14-25 year olds from the Black community talking about why their generation doesn’t swim. Ep 407SSPC: Cody Miller Details Reasons for Having His Best Training Since Before Rio

We sat down with Olympic champion and swim-vlogger Cody Miller after the breaststroke had a strong showing at the Pro Swim in San Antonio. My favorite part about Cody is his vulnerability; his honesty. We get into the nitty-gritty of being a new father, training through a pandemic, and being someone people look to for hope and excitement in a time of uncertainty. Ep 406SSPC: Matthew Marquardt on What He Gained From Riding Across America

If you didn't see our first talk with Matthew Marquardt, you can revisit that conversation here, when he was in the middle of cycling across the United States. Marquardt recently finished his trek, 3 days ahead of schedule, and was kind enough to sit down with us and break down what he gained from the ride. Matthew goes into details of where the hardest struggles came, how his diet changed, and being too sore to even sleep some nights. But all in all, he was able to complete the ride. Matthew is still raising donations through the end of January for children's cancer treatment from St. Jude's, with links to donate below. A link to his fundraiser is available here. Matthew rode to raise money for pediatric cancer treatment through St. Jude. His goal is to raise $23,000 over the course of his ride, $1000/day. Gary Hall Sr. is swimming royalty, a 3-time Olympian, U.S. Olympic Team Captain, Olympic Flag Bearer, father of a 10-time Olympic medalist (Gary Hall Jr.), World Record Holder, former President of the U.S. Olympians Association and the Head Coach / Chief Executive of the famous enterprise known globally as THE RACE CLUB (hyperlink: https://theraceclub.com Olympic icon Gary Hall Sr. makes me feel lazy—in the most positive way. He is a reminder of how to live your life daily with purpose. Case in point, during the pandemic Gary didn’t lose time. Ep 403SSPC: Rutgers Coach Maccoll Explains Redshirting Significant portion of Team

We sat down with Jonathan Maccoll, head coach of the swimming and diving program at Rutgers University. SwimSwam reported last week that Rutgers would be redshirting a significant portion of its team this year, and Maccooll was kind enough to explain the reasoning behind this. Ep 401SSPC: How Going 47's in the 100m Freestyle Became Routine for James Magnussen

As promised, we brought back Aussie legend James Magnussen for part 3 of his swimming story. Maggie brought us through the tail end of his career, post-2013 world champs all the way to the 2016 Olympic Games. Before his shoulder injury in 2014, Magnussen describes his plan for racing as much as he could and how he came to casually drop in-season 47s every time he hit the pool. It's worth a listen to hear this candid account of what being on top of the world can feel like... and how that feeling can bring you back down. James speaks to the fact that even though he could go 47 anytime, he was unmotivated by anything that wasn't Olympic gold. He was partying probably more than he should have to pass the time between the Comm games in 2014 and the Olympics, which as any swimmer knows is a long road. And then injury occurs. Ep 400SSPC: John Moffet Describes Getting Injured as a Gold Medal Favorite at the Olympics

John Moffet is a renaissance man. In the pool he was a 1980 & 1984 Olympian, World Record Holder, World Medalist & Pan Pacific Championships Triple Gold Medalist. Beyond the pool, after graduating from Stanford, he built an impressive career in entertainment winning 3 Primetime Emmy Awards and a list of credits too long to detail here. (Google John Moffet producer director and go to IMDB.) Moreover, he's delivering all of that entertainment muscle to his new podcast SPORT LIFE BALANCE (see Moffet Podcast here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1465300). In this podcast Moffet bottom-lines "the moment" when he knew his chances for 1984 Olympic gold were over. After breaking the 100-meter breaststroke world record at U.S. Olympic Trials (1:02.13), he suffered an injury in the 1984 Olympic Games prelim heat--coming off the wall, a few strokes after his breakout. Hearing the vulnerability in his voice is heart-wrenching. Moffet's life is dramatic, a Hollywood film, and he was, in fact, among the stars of the famous award-winning doc film "16 Days Of Glory" that took you inside the lives of the most interesting 1984 Olympians. Ep 398SSPC: Matt Wilson Explains The Work He's Doing to Recapture the 200 Breast World Record

We sat down with former world-record holder and Aussie breaststroke, Matt Wilson. Ep 394SSPC: How Swimming Helped Matt Mauser After Losing Wife in Crash with Kobe Bryant

We sat down with Matt Mauser, the musician who wrote the music for Kobe Bryant's podcast, Punies. Mauser's wife, Christina, coached Bryant's girls basketball team and was in the helicopter crash that took her and Bryant's life. Mauser candidly discusses the effects of losing his wife and enduring a global pandemic while trying to move through his career as well as raise and teach 3 children (ages 12, 10, and 4). One way he has been able to heal is in the pool, where he has a long history. Mauser picked up swimming late in high school but excelled enough to land a spot on a junior college roster and eventually a spot at Cal Poly, where he was an All-American in the 200 backstroke. After training with Mission Viejo for 2 years post-graduate and going lifetime bests, Matt pivoted away from swimming and started his career in music. In 2018, Mauser got back in the pool and started swimming with a masters team. He continues to find solace in the water today as swimming gives him a small distraction in the middle of his days and a task to complete. It also provides a friendly community that lends support through the journey of being a widowed parent. Ep 388SSPC: Kaylee Mckeown Describes 21-Day Training Blocks with 17-on, 4-Off

We sat down with SwimSwam's 2020 Female Swimmer of the Year, Kaylee McKeown. McKeown re-wrote half of the Australian backstroke record book last year, setting new national records in the 100 and 200 backstrokes long course and the 200 backstroke short course. That short course record of 1:58.94 was also the world’s fastest-ever swim in the event, breaking Katinka Hosszu’s 2014 world record of 1:59.23. At the 2020 Queensland Championships (LCM), McKeown threw down a 57.93 to become just the second person to ever dip under the 58-second mark after Regan Smith‘s 57.57 world record from last year. Being the second-fastest ever to an American means that the swim was good enough to set a new Australian, Oceanian, and Commonwealth record. McKeown takes us through her 2020, as well as her training style since the end of 2018, which doesn't go by weeks, but rather by 3-week periods. Within each 21-day cycle, Mckeown says she trains for 17 of those days in a row and then gets 4 days off.
