S1 Ep 15S1E15: Can raised awareness of Covid-19 help end Asia's wildlife markets? - Green Pulse Ep 15

Green Pulse Ep 15: Can raised awareness of Covid-19 help end Asia's wildlife markets? 11:20 mins Synopsis: Green Pulse is an environmental podcast series at The Straits Times which analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.  This month, ST’s environment correspondent Audrey Tan chats with Mr Rohit Singh, zero poaching lead at the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore, on wildlife markets and their link with zoonotic diseases. In December, a string of pneumonia-linked cases caused by a mystery virus sprang up in Wuhan, China. Preliminary studies showed that bats were likely a natural reservoir for the virus. Scientists are still studying how the virus made the “jump” to humans, but wild animal markets have been implicated in the process as the first cases of the new Covid-19 coronavirus were workers at the Huanan Wholesale Seafood Market, which also sold wild animals. The Chinese government has since introduced a temporary ban on wildlife markets in China, but environmental advocates are calling for the ban to be made permanent. Tune in to this episode to find out what these markets are like in the rest of Asia, their link to the emergence of new infectious diseases, and what can be done to prevent them Produced by: Audrey Tan ([email protected]) & David Fogarty ([email protected]) & Ernest Luis Follow Audrey Tan on Twitter Follow David Fogarty on Twitter Edited by: Adam Azlee Discover more Green Pulse podcast episodes on: Spotify: http://str.sg/oCXj Apple Podcasts: http://str.sg/oyLk Google podcasts: http://str.sg/oyLZ Playlist: https://str.sg/JwRh  Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: [email protected]  Thank you for your support! S1 Ep 20S1E20: Celebrities in hot soup over coronavirus outbreak: #PopVultures Ep 20

#PopVultures Ep 20: Celebrities in hot soup over coronavirus outbreak 20:48 mins Synopsis: A podcast by The Straits Times that examines all the ins and outs of pop culture, be it Asian entertainment or Hollywood. This week, the #PopVultures sound off on the celebrities mired in controversy due to the novel coronavirus outbreak that began in Wuhan. Taiwanese singer Christine Fan was criticised after she lashed out at Taiwan's policy of halting surgical masks exports for a month, calling it inhumane. Taiwanese netizens criticised her for her eagerness to help China, despite keeping quiet about how Taiwan is still shut out of the World Health Organization due to Beijing's objections.  Jan Lee and Yeo Sam Jo explain how the controversy blew up, share their differing opinions on the saga, dive a little into Fan's history (of saying the wrong things at the wrong time) and Singapore's own history with severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars). They also talk about how the novel coronavirus outbreak has been received around the world and the somewhat muted and often racist response to it overseas, especially when contrasted with how the Australian bushfires inspired an outpouring of support from Hollywood celebrities.  Tune in to the #PopVultures and to all our listeners: Stay safe, wash your hands, seek medical attention and wear a mask when you are ill.  Produced by: Jan Lee & Yeo Sam Jo Edited by: Adam Azlee & Penelope Lee Follow more #PopVultures podcasts on: Spotify: http://str.sg/otU9 Apple Podcasts: http://str.sg/oyLi Google Podcasts: http://str.sg/oyLw Playlist: https://str.sg/JiyK  Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: [email protected]@[email protected] Thank you for your support! What are the Oscars thinking? We need answers. He's cheerleading team #anyonebutJoker And then Joanne Soh explains why Robert Downey Jr's post-Marvel career has got off to a flying thud with Dolittle. 00.35: Little Women reviewed, Greta Gerwig defies the odds with the eighth version of the Louisa Mae Alcott classic. Saoirse Ronan wows us, we finally get why Timothee Chalamet sends the girls swooning – and all without the use of Shawn Mendes. 07.50: What's wrong with the Oscars 2020 nominations plus wishlists and predictions and a rant about why Lorene Scafaria's Hustlers is more deserving of Best Director than Todd Phillips' Joker. 22.10: Last and least, it's the Dolittle review. Together with our stable of 30 correspondents based around the world, we give an Asian perspective on the global talking points of the week.
