#PopVultures Ep 30: Cancel culture and celebrities 31:21 mins Synopsis: A podcast by The Straits Times that examines all the ins and outs of pop culture, be it Asian entertainment or Hollywood. After a short hiatus, the #PopVultures are back and this time with piping hot tea on the phrase on everyone's minds recently - cancel culture. They also discuss other cases of cancel culture with The Chicks (formerly known as The Dixie Chicks), Janet Jackson and Xiaxue. S1 Ep 27S1E27: Making peat forests pay for their own conservation: Green Pulse Ep 27

Green Pulse Ep 27: Making peat forests pay for their own conservation 18:05 mins Synopsis: Green Pulse is an environmental podcast series at The Straits Times which analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. The dry season in South-east Asia is just around the corner, bringing with it the prospect of haze. Fires in Indonesia can be started by accident, or deliberately to clear land. And because they take place on carbon-rich peatlands - naturally water-logged ecosystems that are flammable when drained for agriculture - the fires can burn underground and for days on end, causing them to spiral out of control. But in the heart of Borneo, a businessman has a novel idea for how to make peat forests pay for their own conservation. The Katingan Mentaya project in Central Kalimantan is a preserved peat forest more than twice the size of Singapore. Healthy peatlands have plenty of carbon locked in their depths - and that is essentially what the Katingan Mentaya project in Central Kalimantan hopes to "sell" as carbon credits. Active conservation and restoration efforts, such as the replanting of trees in degraded areas, have allowed the land to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it underground, equivalent to taking two million cars off the road each year. The 7.5 million carbon credits that the Katingan Mentaya project produces each year are sold to businesses. Each unit purchased prevents a tonne of carbon dioxide from entering the earth's atmosphere. Tune in to this episode for more on the ‘black gold’ in the heart of Borneo, as we chat with Mr Dharsono Hartono, the co-founder of the Katingan Mentaya project. S1 Ep 26S1E26: A Covid-19 tide of trash; and implications for marine life: Green Pulse Episode 2

Green Pulse Episode 26: A Covid-19 tide of trash; and implications for marine life 16:00 mins Synopsis: Green Pulse is an environmental podcast series at The Straits Times which analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.  The Covid-19 lockdowns have led to improved environmental outcomes in some instances, such as improved air quality, but the outlook is not all rosy. On the back of Singapore’s Year Toward Zero Waste in 2019, a survey done by alumni from the National University of Singapore’s Master of Science (Environmental Management) programme found that 1,334 tonnes of additional plastic waste, equivalent to the weight of 92 double-decker buses, was generated from takeaway and delivery meals within the 8-week circuit breaker period between Apr 7 and June 1.  Globally, the rise of disposables in the form of single-use plastics, face masks and personal protective equipment due to hygiene concerns has led to concerns that these items may end up as litter in public places, and eventually make their way into the ocean. This could have implications for marine biodiversity. Tune in to this episode to find out more, as The Straits Times chats with Ms Shaleen Shahrin on the survey findings and Dr Neo Mei Lin, a marine biologist at the Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore, on the implications of marine debris on life underwater. S1 Ep 4S1E4: The new normal in restaurant dining during Covid-19 pandemic: askST@NLB Ep 4

askST@NLB Ep 4: The new normal in restaurant dining during Covid-19 pandemic 29:06 mins Synopsis: This is the fourth episode of the askST@NLB podcast series brought to you by the National Library Board. The monthly talks by The Straits Times correspondents were previously held at the Central Public Library but due to Covid-19 safe distancing measures, we are converting the sessions into a podcast series done remotely.  Listen to the correspondents you follow, more intimately, through our podcasts.   For this episode, The Straits Times' senior food correspondent Wong Ah Yoke invites his guest - hotelier-restaurateur Loh Lik Peng - who owns the Unlisted Collection of restaurants such as Zen, Burnt Ends, Majestic Restaurant and Meatsmith. They discuss the new normal in restaurant dining and how the Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the food and beverage landscape in Singapore. How are restaurants working within the new rules, to improve the experience? (2:00) How can small restaurants still make money, especially those with cramped spaces that seemed in vogue during pre-Covid times? (3:17) What to consider now if you are considering opening a restaurant in this Covid-19 pandemic? (6:15) Which foods suit delivery better? (8:25) How islandwide delivery changes the game for both diners and restaurants (10:30) How can restaurants be sustainable, balancing manpower and 7-day work weeks, while juggling dine-in and delivery revenue streams? (14:30) We tackle selected readers' questions: (17:30 onwards) From ST reader Mdm Tang Wen Yu: "Post-Covid-19 and the looming recession, is there wiggle room for fine dining? How do you cater to the few with lots of money to spend on food, without coming across as insensitive?" From reader Mr Victor Lim: "In your opinion, did Phase Two come too soon, before F&B players were ready? Have the authorities done well?" From another reader Ms Teresa Chen: "Presently, only a group of five from different households are allowed to dine together. This does not cater to families with more than three children. I understand the need to limit but if it is the immediate nuclear family (parents and children all living together in the same household), there is no reason not to let the whole family dine together." From reader Ms Baoxuan: "What is the most underrated local produce used in restaurants today? What do you project for the farm-to-fork movement in our Singapore restaurant scene?"
