  Hami and Mia Hami Ramani is a neurologist who has a big interest in making biking safer and reducing the usage of cars. He’s now in Portland and seems to be leading a resurgence of active transportation advocacy in the area. Like Guthrie, I too am interested if anyone is making bike maps with routes that optimized for shade. One easy upgrade that will make many city bike maps more usable is to make the maps available as a geospatial PDF files. This type of file, on your phone, allows you to see your location on the bike map using only the phone’s GPS signal, no internet connection/data plan required. My city, Daytona Beach, has no official bike map so I made one of my own and published it as a free geospatial PDF file that works with the Avenza Maps App. More info on my map here. Trevor joins us to chat about the Swift Summit, the spirit of a well tuned event, and aspirations for the future. From the race: Join those who are looking to dig deep for an event like no other: part brevet, part gran fondo, part self-supported endurance road race. Riders are provided a cue sheet, a marked course, and aid station/control points approximately 40 miles apart to restock. In between those support checks, riders can access convenience stores and other neutral amenities along the course as needed. The 200-mile route boasts over 10,000 feet of climbing and features several short sections of hard-packed gravel roads, while the 100-mile route checks in just over 5,000 feet of climbing and has no gravel. Both courses offer scenic views of the Cascades Mountain range and run alongside the swift Santiam and Calapooia Rivers. Baseball and softball equipment sales dropped 17 percent, and soccer and football equipment fell more than 10 percent. Hordes of new skateboarders and cyclists may be a bright spot in the decades-long trend of declining physical activity rates among kids. Americans drove 13.2 percent fewer miles in 2020 than the year before. On average, Americans drove less last year than in any year since 1989… Even as the number of miles traveled on American roads fell in 2020, the number of traffic deaths rose by 8% – to more than 42,000, with an estimated 4.8 million injuries requiring attention from a medical professional. We take a moment to chat with Peter Flax, Peter Flax is a journalist and lifelong cyclist. As the editor in chief of Bicycling magazine, he got to cover the Tour de France and ride more than 500 different bikes. He has ridden with Eddy Merckx, Greg Lemond, Miguel Indurain—and has maintained a complicated relationship with Lance Armstrong. He has ridden cross-country and raced bikes for year with great passion and little success. Six years ago, Flax moved to Los Angeles, where his bike life has become centered around transit riding, and that experience has shifted the focus of much of his writing to advocacy. Transit passes were added as a “mobility option,” as well, and so were e-bikes and bike-share memberships. … The e-bike grants are for $7,500 and can be put towards one or more e-bikes plus necessary bike accessories, with any remainder used for transit passes in the Bay Area’s pilot program.
