Making National Security Meaningful with David Van Bennekum - 286
When I met David Van Bennekum on Linked In and he told me he'd written a self-help book on National Security, I thought 'That's a bit unusual, followed by blimey he's got some guts … that's a challenging topic'. My curiosity was well and truly piqued though, so I had a look at his LinkedIn profile and saw that he was a former United States Marine Corps Infantry and Logistics Officer. He was a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and he'd retired from active service as a Lieutenant Colonel. Then I saw that besides that, he had a law degree and also a Masters in National Security Law from Georgetown University. He obviously had the knowledge, but as I messaged him back to find out more, I'm not going to lie … based on previous conversations with some 'experts', I was fully expecting him to bore the pants off me! But … the opposite happened. When he started sharing about it, he didn't waffle on about facts and stats, no … he made me laugh and even better, gave me a light bulb moment about something truly important. And that's when I knew I had to get him on the show, because being able to make something complex, technical and difficult, engaging and relatable to an audience, is a key skill for writers and speakers. If you want to get a different perspective on how to make your subject more entertaining, then sit back and listen 'cause you'll love this show. What you'll discover: Why David decided to write the first self-help book on National Security How he decided on the big idea of the book Why people are sceptical about it and how he addresses that. Why the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game is relevant to National Security David's definition of National Security and why he thinks it applies universally. What he means by 'true community' How he approached making the topic entertaining and relatable, and why this was so critical. Some examples of his approach in action. Where speaking fits into the picture. License to Thrill… Your Audience - 285
The other day I had a talk planning call with a potential client, and he said: "I just want to get consistent results. Sometimes I start my talk and I can feel the energy shift, and I know I've engaged them. But other times, I just can't get their attention, and I want to understand how to do this consistently every time I speak." The truth is that grabbing your audience's attention in the right way, (or 'hooking'' them in, as I call it), is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a successful talk. The first 180 seconds of your talk is perhaps the most crucial, and that's because in those two to three minutes you are communicating a lot to your audience without even realising it. In this show, I'm going to show you how to make the most of that time, and to avoid the bear traps I so often see speakers falling into at the start of their talk. Enjoy! What you'll learn: The messages you are communicating to your audience before you even start speaking. The big mistakes a lot of speakers make with the start of their talk. Why you should go for quantity over quality when you are looking for great ideas. The questions you should ask yourself before you 'settle' for a talk title, open and close. Why you should be provocative and what to do after. If you want to be heard stay out of the 'herd' The way to make your talk unique. And more!! Making Your Brand Uniquely You with Becky Benfield-Humberstone - 283
Not too long ago I heard one of the gurus in my space say that one of the big factors in his success is that when everyone else 'zigs', he 'zags'. You can see 'zigging' going on all around you, suddenly everyone wants to be a neurodiversity expert, or an AI expert, because that's what's hot, because they are chasing the trend. But what if you don't do that? What if you go your own way, and stay true to who you are and who you want to help? That is the path that Becky Benfield-Humberstone has chosen right from the get go. A born entrepreneur, Becky left school at 16 to start her own super niched business, Utterly Horses, which became the largest model horse stockist (yes, it's a thing) in Europe, with a product range of over 2,500 items that retailed to a customer base of over 50,000 people and corporate clients. After successfully exiting that business in 2018, Becky wanted a new challenge. That's when she created Brand Artisan, and in that business she has been helping business owners bring their visions to life, stand out, and exponentially grow their businesses. She is joining me here to talk about all things branding, storytelling and marketing, and I know you are going to pick up some golden nuggets from her. What you'll discover: How Becky started an international business at 16. The problem Becky solves today. The difference between brand strategy and marketing strategy. Why keynote speakers need a brand. The big branding you might be making in business. Where stories fit into the work Becky does. Why Becky bucks the trend and only works with one client at a time. Where speaking fits in. Why Becky created the Founders project and how you can get involved. Karmic Selling - How to Win Big and Feel Good with Stan Gwizdak - 281
Most of us have experienced sales 'tactics', and likely we've either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us. Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling 'salesy' ourselves. But whether we like it or not, we're all in the business of selling something to someone, whether that's ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers. So … I guess that means you have to 'suck it up' and jump on the soft and hard sell bandwagon if you want to succeed. Well no … you don't. That's because there is another way that will likely yield you more reward in sales and personal satisfaction than anything you've come across before. And that new approach is called Karmic Selling created by my guest Stan Gwizdak. Stan Gwizdak is CEO of The Kormac Group, a results-driven management consulting firm that embodies his clean heart and commitment to serving others. As a chief executive and Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Stan has spent more than 30 years leading business transformations at General Electric, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Textron, Aurora Capital, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and more. Stan is here today to talk about Karmic Selling and the successes and failures that helped him design his system and grow his company. Whether you're a speaker, sales executive, entrepreneur, you'll discover why when you do good, even more good will come your way. What you'll discover: Why Stan believes that the traditional approach to sales needs to change. What made Stan leave a company just before he was due to take the top job. How he approached getting clients for his company without having a sales background. How he took a one man band to a business competing with the big consultancies. The problem that Karmic Selling solves for individuals and companies. The three biggest mistakes people and companies are making around this problem at the moment. The key ingredients of the Karmic Selling System and how it counters those mistakes. The first few steps you should take if you want to get started using the karmic Selling philosophy and system. [Quick Tip] Lead with the Problem - 278
I had a similar issue come up with two clients this week, and it's a mistake I see people making regularly, not just with their speaking, but in other critical content too. This mistake can result in people not paying attention to you, lost business opportunities, and normally leads to frustration and the question, "I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong!" What they are doing wrong is not leading with the problem. That's why in this episode I'm sharing: What leading with the problem means. Where you should be doing it. Why you are likely losing people's attention. The simple exercise you can do to avoid the LinkedIn advert issue. The important check you need to make about where your audience is. Examples to illustrate. Enjoy! Stop Being Humble and Step into Your Power with Lisa Bragg - 277
SUMMARY Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way. SHOW NOTES We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, 'nobody likes a show off', 'stay humble' and 'self praise is no praise'. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time. When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and 'tut' and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility… (whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done). But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a 'show off', in fact they're getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients. And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or … we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once… which also puts people off. The big question is … why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? And how can we share our authority, and experience Well that is what my guest Lisa Bragg is here to answer for us. Lisa has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion launched in May. In addition to being an author, she is a speaker, advisor, professional mentor and founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm. She was also a TV reporter and anchor for 15 years. I hope this show helps you step out of the shadows and share all the excellent stuff you are up to! Enjoy What you'll discover: The catalyst for Lisa to embrace 'bragging' and why she had avoided it before. Why Lisa believes that modesty is a negative habit? The double standards at play in society when it comes to bragging and 'the range of acceptable behaviour'. Why you shouldn't market yourself for where you have been and what you should do instead. The myths around bragging that could be holding you back. Why finding a partner can help you with promotion. The three biggest mistakes people making around bragging. Three tips for promoting yourself the right way. How Lisa uses speaking in her business. [Quick Tip] Talking About the Plane vs. Talking About the Pain - 276
Quick tips to build your speaking confidence, skills, impact, business or engaging talk content. These tips originate from issues that come up for students, and questions from my audience. If you want to get your question answered DM me on Instagram or LinkedIN @Saraharcher15. I come across many speakers who are struggling to connect with their audience, and as a consequence their talks fail to get them the results that they want. One of the biggest reasons they struggle is because they are doing what I call … talking about the plane vs. talking about the pain. That's why in this episode I'm sharing: What it means to talk about the plane Why your audience doesn't care about the plane What you need to focus on instead. Why 'avatar' exercises are pointless How to find the burning platform that will get your audience into action The opportunity if you can connect deeply A special tool I created to help you get this right Enjoy! Dare to be Different with Kyla Skinner - 275
How often, when it comes to writing in your business, has the blank page beaten you? I've seen so many people get stopped, or never share what they have written because they don't think it's good enough, or they are worried about being judged. Just like when you speak, in your business writing too, you get an amazing confidence boost from knowing that your message is good, that your content will make you stand out and connect with your target audience. When that happens you're excited to put yourself out there. So how do you shift from stuck to successful? How do you go from getting underwhelming results with your business writing, to your audience saying … "this person gets me and my problem, I think I need to work with them"? That's where this show comes in. My guest today is Kyla Skinner, copywriter and business writing mentor. She helps business owners harness the power of personality to better connect with their audience, stand out in today's increasingly noisy market and attract new clients – so they can grow their business, not hold it back. As a fully accredited introvert, Kyla had herself felt shy, nervous and reluctant about showing her own personality. But that changed when she discovered the huge impact it made on growing her fledgling freelance business. Now, she's an experienced (and award-winning) strategic copywriter, who's built her copywriting and brand language business, The Jarrah Consultancy, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals. Over the past 20 years, Kyla has helped to position and promote hundreds of brands, including many big name, global market leaders. Today, she also encourages coaches, consultants and small business owners to tap into all this insight and expertise via her dedicated membership community, Copy Café. Enjoy! What you'll discover: How Kyla became a copywriter and why personality matters to her. The problem with generic writing and using tools like chat GPT. What it means to 'show' your personality in your writing and the difference it makes to your message. Why small business owners struggle to connect with their audience in their copy. The three words that Kyla wrote for a Subaru ad that tells a big story. How to approach 'daring to be different' if you are more introverted. The difference between bland business writing versus writing with personality. The gap that Kyla found small business owners falling into, and how she filled it. [Quick Tip] Commit to the Hook of Your Talk - 272
One of the most important parts of your talk is the opening, because you have to grab the attention of your audience and show why the talk is relevant for them. What I've noticed recently with some of my clients, is that their 'hook', (or 'lightning bolt' as I call it), is good, but they aren't fully committing to it, and that is weakening the opening and the connection with the audience and the topic they're speaking about. So … I thought I'd share the coaching and feedback I gave them with you, so that you avoid this issue, and make the start of your talk rock! In this show I'm covering: The triggers for attention recap. Three potential 'lightning bolt' options to hook your audience. The problem and an illustration. What to do instead. Thrutopia - The New Storytelling Genre with the Power to Change Everything with Manda Scott - 258
As speakers we are using stories to affect our audience. At the bare minimum a story will entertain. When you begin to infuse the story with emotions, fears and desires that your audience shares then it becomes engaging at the next level. But if we truly want our audience to shift into action then our stories must show transformation, and this is the type of story that I teach speakers to use in their talks. When I heard about Manda Scott's new take on transformational storytelling for writers, I wanted to get her on the show to find out more. Manda has had an interesting journey from veterinary surgeon, to best-selling novelist, to founder of the 'Accidental Gods' movement and podcast, and the Thrutopian genre of writing. Her own story is fascinating and she shares some experiences she has had that you might find challenging, because they feel so far removed from 'convention'. There is so much value and importance in what she shares, and if you want to effect real change as a speaker, then this show is for you. Enjoy! What you'll discover: Why we are not fixed to one path or purpose and how Manda discovered each new chapter of her life. The concept of 'accidental gods' and what this means for each of us What the new 'Thrutopian' writing genre is and its power to make change a reality. How speakers can use the 'Thrutopian' approach to bring new possibilities into being. The importance of intuition and ways that we can get more in touch with our true self. Why fear is our biggest enemy. How we can connect better with each other and the world around us Manda's view of the essential elements of a story that gets people into action The secret to writing a best selling book. How to Write and be Understood with Anne Janzer - 255
Great speakers do two things better than other people… They create content that is designed to connect with their audience where they are and engage them in new and compelling possibilities for the future; and They deliver it in a way that builds rapport, entertains and motivates them to take the next step. The truth is that whilst the way they do them might be different, authors must also accomplish these two things in their books. That's where my guest today comes in. Anne Janzer is a nonfiction book coach and the author of multiple award-winning books on writing, including The Writer's Process and Writing to Be Understood. She is fascinated by human behaviour and cognitive science, and is always looking for clues about how we communicate more effectively. The Four Steps to Standing Out in a Competitive Niche - 254
No matter how far you niche down in terms of your message and services, there will always be competition. How you think about that competition and respond to it will determine the level of success you have and the speed at which you achieve that success. I know that it can feel scary and all sorts of doubts can surface about what you can offer compared to everyone else. That is normal. Certainly, I've been there, and still have lapses that slow me down, but I know now how to move away from those thoughts more quickly these days, and the things I need to do in my space to carve out my unique message to attract my crowd. In this show I want to share those with you, so that you can become a thought leader in your niche. Enjoy! What you'll discover: How to reframe a competitive niche. How to Build Rapport with an Audience and Why You Should do it - 253
There are more platforms available for speakers to share their message than ever before. There are also more people speaking than ever before. This means that when the opportunities arise for you to speak, you have to make them count. To stand out from the hoardes of wannabe speakers you must have three things, value driven content, a presentation style that is engaging and compelling, and a talk that builds a relationship with your audience. In this show I'll be focusing on sharing the principles of making that connection with your audience so that your talk gets you the results you want. Enjoy! Can Meditating Make You a Better Speaker? - 252
There's a lot of talk about the benefits of meditation, not only in helping us cope with the challenges we face in modern life, but also the physical benefits that may give us longer lives and better overall health. That's why a lot more people are now meditating, and I'm one of them. Until now, I've dabbled in it, but one of my goals this year was to go all in on meditation and do it every day. So, I enrolled on a 10-day virtual meditation retreat, which I'm halfway through at the time of recording. Currently, I'm meditating for two hours a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, which is a challenge. I'm doing this for two key reasons, firstly to improve my focus and secondly to get a stronger connection to my intuition. But the big question I wanted to explore in this episode is whether introducing meditation into your life could help you become a better speaker? Enjoy! What you'll discover: What meditation actually is. The different types of meditation. How meditation can affect fear of speaking. The ways that meditation can help you create your talk content. How you can get stopped from fulfilling your potential and how meditation can prevent that. The extra meditation practice that can supercharge your performance. How meditation can improve your connection with your audience. Part of that discomfort stems from how we position 'networking' in our minds, and a lot of it is down to how we prepare for the event. Networking, just like speaking, has never been bigger. Online networking is still as popular as it was during the pandemic for many reasons, and now in-person networking is back in play. And regardless of how you feel about it … the bottom line is that if you want to grow your career or business then you must build relationships and grow your network. If you know that you're avoiding networking or you want to get better at it so that you can rock 2023, then you're in the right place. That's because my guest on this show is Charlie Lawson. Until relatively recently, Charlie was the UK head of one of the biggest networking organisations, BNI. On top of that he has written two books of networking - 'The Unnatural Networker' and 'The Unnatural Promoter', and he is also an international speaker on the subject. He is on a mission to show people and organisations how to generate more leads and grow their profits through networking, and he is here to share some great tips with you! Enjoy! What you'll discover: Why Charlie calls himself an unnatural networker. How his feelings about networking used to impact his networking success. What he did to go from feeling uncomfortable about networking to leading the BNI in the UK 13 years. How Charlie prepares for a networking event. What being a networking superhero looks like. Why and how you should lead the networking conversation with differentiation. The ingredients of a good elevator pitch. How to use stories in networking. How speaking has helped Charlie build his brand and business. The big mistakes people making when they network. Tips for getting more referrals and business. Tips for Applying the Spice and Seasoning to Your Talk - 243
If you've listened to many episodes of The Speaking Club, you will no doubt have heard me share that a talk should be planned and scripted, but that at the right time you should let go of the script to bring the talk alive for you and your audience. That is what this episode is all about. As you know, I teach a talk structure that I developed to make it easy for you to engage your audience with stories, whilst also moving them onto the same page as you, so that they are more likely to buy into your idea, change, product or service emotionally and logically. But, as I always say, the content is only half of the equation to becoming a great speaker, and the other half is about how you deliver the message and those stories. It's important that you're able to lift the content off the page, and breathe life, personality, emotion and performance into it, so that it becomes compelling for your audience and exciting and easy for you to deliver. What I wanted to do in this show, is share an excerpt from a coaching session with Catherine Weetman, one of my Nail Your Signature Talk clients. Catherine is an expert, advocate and thought leader in the circular economy space and she has a difficult path to tread with her message, so that she brings her audience with her. We talk about how she can do that, and some ways to add the spice and seasoning into her talk! Enjoy! What you'll discover: Why it's important to share your opinion. How to be a thought leader and keep your audience with you even when you need to be critical The 'push' and 'pull' of the audience journey. How the performance of a talk can make it so much more powerful. Why it's important to be playful in rehearsal. How you can add more humour to your talk by changing perspectives. My Five in Five Discoveries for Success and Happiness - 241
Five years ago, I launched The Speaking Club and it's been an interesting journey. From me talking to myself in a little cubby hole, wondering if anyone would listen, to the show being downloaded in over 190 countries and it becoming a top 1% podcast, regularly in the charts. To recognise this milestone, I decided that I wanted to share my biggest learnings over the past five years, some of which I've already covered with you in podcast episodes and some which haven't. I hope that some of the aha moments I've had and share with you here, will help you too. Maybe as a new concept that gives you insight and shifts something that might be holding you back, or as a reminder for something you know but has bobbed below the surface. Where there is a companion episode, I'll point you to it in case you want to dig deeper. Enjoy! What you'll discover: The counter intuitive positioning for growing your audience Why letting go of what you want is the best way to get it. The critical distinction between intention and attention. Getting Yourself in the Frame with Marcus Ahmad - 240
A lot of the heavy lifting for your brand is done by the image you present to your target audience offstage. People not only look at your credentials and experience, but also your photo to gauge how you come across and whether you'll be a right fit for them or their audience. That profile picture of you is often the start of the 'know, like, trust' journey and it's important that you don't fall at the first hurdle. So, as well as investing in developing your content and speaking skills, you also need to pay attention to your photo as another marketing asset. That's why I've bought Marcus Ahmad onto the show. He started his career in fashion photography leading shoots across the globe, including Paris, New York and London. More recently, he has switched into working with speakers, coaches and businesses, specialising in commercial branding shoots. He is here to help you nail your brand photos and more! Enjoy! What you'll discover: How Marcus ended up doing what he does today. Why he believes that the single image is more powerful than the moving image. How to Share an Emotional Story Without Losing Control - 239
As Brené Brown pointed out, there is power in being vulnerable. I believe there is even more power in showing that vulnerability through a story about a personal experience. BUT … if that story is emotionally charged then there are some additional things you need to consider before you share it. That's because it can be done badly, and when that happens you can make your audience feel uncomfortable, distract them from your core message and undermine your impact. So, in this show, I'm going to be giving you the lowdown on what you should consider before you use an emotionally charged personal story in your talk and some tips for managing your own emotions when you share it. Enjoy! What you'll discover: The big mistakes people make when sharing emotionally charged stories. How to decide whether to use a painful personal story. What factors to consider when choosing how much to share. Managing your audience's emotional journey through your talk. How to manage your own emotions when you're speaking. And more!!
