🚨 BLIZZARD WARNING - South Dakota Weather 3/14 - Evening

Good evening. South Dakota. I'm Michael Mosby. That dusting of snow overnight? Just a teaser, folks, the main feature is about to walk through the door. And it's not messing around, a powerful storm system is taking dead aim at us right now. Let me take you on a quick tour of the state, you're sitting at 21 degrees in the east under gray skies. Rain slides in this evening, but don't get used to it, that switches to snow after midnight. Then the wind takes over, gusts hitting 40 miles an hour will create blizzard conditions overnight. You'll see 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow by morning, sunday hits 26 degrees, but the bottom falls out by nightfall. We're talking single digits, wind chills could scrape minus 23 by Monday morning. That's dangerous, folks. Head west and you're already colder at 11 degrees. Rain and snow mix in this evening before turning to all snow overnight. Another 1 to 3 inches piles up there, with winds gusting to 37 miles an hour. Sunday stays windy with a high near 25, dropping to near 5 degrees Sunday night. Central South Dakota, you're right in the thick of it at 13 degrees. Rain changes to snow around 9 P.M., this region sees the highest totals, with 2 to 4 inches expected. Blizzard conditions are likely overnight as gusts top 44 miles an hour, sunday only reaches 21 for a high. Watch your thermometer Sunday night, it drops near zero. Sunday is a dangerous weather day statewide, travel will be extremely difficult, so please stay put if you can. The arctic air behind this is brutal, running 15 to 30 degrees below normal to start the week. But here's the plot twist, monday stays sunny and frigid with highs in the teens. Tuesday warms into the 30s. Then Wednesday? We rocket to near 60, by Thursday and Friday. Here comes 70s. That's a 50-degree swing in four days. Classic South Dakota. As the sun sets. Charge your phones and hunker down tonight. — See you tomorrow.

South Dakota Weather 3/9 Morning - Red Flag Warning

Good morning. South Dakota. I'm Michael Mosby. Step outside right now and you're greeted by 40 degrees and clear skies. Feels almost generous for early March. But a cold front is carving through the state as we speak. And it's about to split us in two. Down in Sioux Falls and along Highway 20, you'll hit 62 degrees today — well above normal for this time of year. Head north toward Aberdeen and you top out closer to 58. That front stalling across central South Dakota is drawing a line between mild and cool, with northeast winds gusting to 25 miles an hour this afternoon, especially east of the Missouri River. Tonight brings partly cloudy skies and lows dropping to 28 degrees in central areas, 32 out east. That sets the stage for Tuesday's system. Tuesday starts mostly cloudy with highs in the mid-40s statewide. The action begins Tuesday night — rain and snow likely after 7 P.M., especially along and north of I-90. Eastern South Dakota has a 60 percent chance of precipitation, with snow accumulation under half an inch possible. Central areas could see slightly higher totals. A localized band near the North Dakota border might squeeze out 2 to 4 inches if everything comes together. Wednesday clears out nicely with sunshine returning and highs climbing back to the mid-40s. Thursday brings the warmest day of the week — highs reach the low 60s statewide. But here's the catch: strong winds develop Thursday afternoon, with gusts potentially hitting 30 to 35 miles an hour. Fire weather concerns rise across the Missouri River Valley. Looking ahead to the weekend, another system approaches Friday night into Saturday. Snow chances return Saturday night with accumulations possible, especially northern areas. Sunday stays mostly cloudy with highs in the 30s. See you this afternoon.

Mar 9, 20261 min

South Dakota Weather 3/8 Midday - 20° Above Normal

Good afternoon. South Dakota. I'm Matt Mullins. Step outside and you're greeted by 59 degrees. Gorgeous. But here's the kicker — we're about to shatter expectations this afternoon. Statewide, highs climb into the low to mid 70s. That's about 20 degrees above normal for early March. Sioux Falls hits 72. Rapid City pushes to 73. Aberdeen reaches 70. Some spots could tie records set decades ago. But there's a catch. West winds gust between 25 and 40 miles an hour this afternoon. Humidity drops to around 25 percent. That combination creates very high grassland fire danger across most of the state. Northwestern South Dakota has a Wind Advisory until 6 P.M., with gusts potentially hitting 50. If you're burning anything outdoors, don't. Tonight, temperatures crash fast. Lows drop to the mid 30s statewide under partly cloudy skies. Winds ease off to 5 to 15 miles an hour. Monday stays pleasant with mostly sunny skies. Highs range from the upper 50s in central areas to the upper 60s out west. A cold front approaches Monday night, bringing a chance of rain and snow after midnight, especially in western counties. Tuesday turns cooler with highs in the low to mid 40s and a chance of light snow. Best odds are in the west, where the Black Hills could see light accumulations. Wednesday clears out with highs in the mid 40s. Thursday warms back up to the mid to upper 60s, but another system Friday brings more chances for snow. The weekend stays unsettled with temperatures in the 40s and lingering snow chances. One more thing — clocks spring forward tonight. You lose an hour of sleep, but we're gaining nearly three minutes of daylight. See you this evening.

South Dakota Weather 3/8 Morning - Wind Advisory

Good morning. South Dakota. I'm Michael Nally. Spring just kicked winter to the curb. We're talking near-record warmth today, folks — upper 60s to low 70s statewide. That's 21 degrees to 20 degrees warmer than we'd expect for early March. But here's the catch. West winds are going to howl all afternoon, gusting to 30 miles an hour across most areas and hitting 50 out in the northwest. A Wind Advisory runs until 6 P.M. Up there. Sioux Falls hits 70 by late afternoon. Pierre reaches 71. Out in Rapid City, you peak near 73 around 4 P.M. Before the slide begins. Now combine that warmth with bone-dry air and those gusty winds. And you've got very high grassland fire danger anywhere snow hasn't stuck around. Tonight? Total flip. A cold front drops south from North Dakota and temperatures crash. Lows fall to the mid to upper 30s statewide. Winds shift and ease overnight. Monday stays pleasant — sunshine and highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. A bit cooler than today, but still nice. Monday night turns mostly cloudy as our next system rolls in. Here's your week ahead. Tuesday brings increasing clouds and a chance of rain and snow, especially Tuesday night. Western areas could see accumulation, likely under half an inch. Highs only reach the low to mid 40s. Wednesday starts with lingering snow before clearing out. Highs climb back to the mid 40s. Thursday rebounds nicely — partly sunny and mid to upper 60s, though breezy again. Another system arrives late week with chances for rain and snow Friday into Saturday. Temperatures cool back to the 40s. Enjoy the warmth today, but keep an eye on those winds if you're heading out. See you this afternoon.

South Dakota Weather 3/7 Evening - Sunny & Sudden

Good evening. South Dakota. I'm Michael Nally. Folks, if you stepped outside this morning, you probably noticed winter just called in sick. We're trading that morning bite for a serious taste of spring. You're waking up to clear skies, but —by this afternoon, temperatures are going to soar **25 to 30 degrees above normal**. We're talking record-breaking warmth. Western South Dakota is leading the charge. Rapid City and the Black Hills hit **72 degrees** by late afternoon. That's a solid **30 degrees warmer than average**. You'll see gusty west winds around 20 miles an hour, but watch out up north. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the northwest plains where gusts could top 50. With dry grass and low humidity, fire danger is extreme today, so please hold off on any outdoor burning. Central regions aren't far behind. Pierre and Chamberlain climb to **71 degrees**. It will be breezy, with winds 15 to 20 miles an hour, so hang onto your hat. Sioux Falls and Aberdeen join the heat wave too, topping out near **69 degrees**. The catch there's a stronger southwest wind. Gusts hit 30 miles an hour by mid-afternoon, making it feel a touch cooler than the thermometer reads. Tonight stays unusually mild with lows in the 30s and 40s. That's about **21 degrees above normal** for this time of year. Looking ahead, the warmth sticks around through Monday. We see highs in the 60s again before a cold front sweeps through Monday night. That brings a chance of rain and snow by Tuesday. Western areas might see light accumulations while the east stays mostly wet. Then, get ready for another rollercoaster—back to the 60s by Thursday before cooling off next weekend. Spring is flexing its muscles early. We're gaining nearly 3 minutes of daylight every day now. Just don't pack away the winter gear quite yet—this is South Dakota, after all. See you tomorrow.

South Dakota Weather 3/7 Morning - Frost to Flip-Flops

Good morning. South Dakota. I'm Aaron Jolly. Step outside this morning and you'll feel that lingering winter bite—25 degrees statewide with a dusting of snow overnight. But here's the twist: by this afternoon. Here comes a 30-degree temperature split statewide. Classic South Dakota—where one side basks in spring-like warmth while the other clings to winter's last gasp. Out west. Rapid City and the Black Hills are the place to be. You'll wake up to 41 degrees—feeling like 36 with that west wind—but by 1 P.M., you're hitting 60 degrees. Sunny skies, light winds around 9 miles an hour. It's practically a postcard. Tonight? A mild dip to 40, with temperatures rising overnight thanks to those steady west winds. Sunday brings even more heat—73 degrees—with gusts up to 29 miles an hour. Fire weather concerns are real here, folks. Dry air and breezy conditions mean elevated risk, especially Sunday. Pierre and the central plains split the difference. Start your Saturday at 28 degrees—feeling like 19, brisk! But by 4 P.M., you're at a comfortable 58. Sunny and windy, with gusts to 25 miles an hour. Tonight cools to 38, then Sunday soars to 71. That's 20 degrees above normal for early March. —because by Tuesday, we're talking snow chances and highs back in the 40s. Sioux Falls and the east? you're stuck in winter's grip a little longer. Highs today struggle to 51 degrees—still 23 degrees above normal, but nothing like the west. Mostly sunny, with west winds around 10 miles an hour. Tonight dips to 35, then Sunday rebounds to 69. But here's the kicker: by Monday night, a cold front sweeps in, dropping temps fast. Tuesday's high? Just 53 degrees, with a chance of rain and snow mixing in. Winter isn't done with you yet. Sunday is the warmest day of the week—maybe even near-record highs. West river could hit the mid-70s. Fire danger spikes with gusty winds and dry air. Monday starts mild, but a cold front arrives overnight. By Tuesday. Here comes snow likely in the west—yes, snow, up to half an inch—and rain or snow mix east. Highs plummet to the 40s. Wednesday offers a brief rebound near 50, but another system arrives Thursday night with rain and snow chances. We're gaining nearly 3 minutes of daylight each day—sunrise at 6:54 A.M., sunset at 6:24 P.M. and here's your hopeful note: the spring equinox is just 13 days away. But don't pack away the winter gear just yet. This week is a reminder that March in South Dakota is a battleground—where winter and spring duel it out. And the only guarantee is change. If your pipes survive tonight, buy them a thank you card. See you tomorrow. See you this afternoon.

South Dakota Weather 3/6 Morning - 30° Above Normal

Good morning. South Dakota. I'm Aaron Jolly. Folks, winter is throwing a tantrum today. A cold front is carving through the state right now. And it's bringing the full menu: fog, rain, freezing rain. And snow. Eastern South Dakota woke up to dense fog and rain. Sioux Falls hits 49 degrees this morning, then temperatures nosedive to 34 by afternoon as the front barrels through. Rain switches to freezing rain around 8 P.M. — slick roads guaranteed. Snow takes over by midnight. Here comes a glaze of ice and less than an inch of snow before it clears out Saturday morning. Central South Dakota sees snow developing around noon. Pierre tops out at 37 degrees before the cold air crashes in. Snow likely through this evening with up to an inch of accumulation. Winds gust to 30 miles an hour out of the north — the kind that finds every gap in your jacket. Western South Dakota already woke up to snow. Rapid City reaches 42 degrees, but wind chills drop to 19 around 10 A.M. With north winds gusting to 41 miles an hour. That's the kind of cold that bites. Snow tapers off by afternoon with minimal accumulation. Tonight's lows are brutal across the board. Eastern areas drop to 26 degrees. Central South Dakota falls to 23. Western regions see 25. Here's the good news. Saturday brings sunshine and a massive warm-up. Highs climb into the mid 40s east, mid 50s central. And near 60 out west. Sunday is even better — 63 in Sioux Falls, 69 in Pierre. And 71 in Rapid City. That's 25 to 30 degrees above normal. Monday stays mild with highs in the 50s before another system arrives Monday night into Tuesday with rain and snow chances. Wednesday clears out with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Thursday warms back into the upper 50s. Roads will be slippery tonight. Take it slow if you're heading out. See you tomorrow. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast See you tomorrow.

South Dakota Weather March 5 Midday - Winter Weather Advisory

Good afternoon. South Dakota. I'm Aaron Jolly. Folks, we've got a gorgeous split across the state today. Out west? You're basking in 68 degrees — windows down, jacket optional. Head east and you're at 61 under some clouds. Not bad at all. Because tonight we're flipping the script. In the next 24 hours. Rain rolls into eastern South Dakota after 7 P.M. Some of those storms overnight could get rowdy — quarter-sized hail and wind gusts hitting 60 miles an hour. Out west, you'll catch a quick shot of rain around 11 P.M. Before it switches to snow overnight. Central areas stay partly cloudy with lows dropping to 29 degrees. Friday's the messy one. Eastern South Dakota sees rain through the morning — heaviest right around 10 A.M. — then it transitions to snow Friday night. We're talking wintry mix with freezing rain possible as temps crash from 52 degrees down to 39 by afternoon. Western South Dakota wakes up to snow and brutal wind chills near 18 degrees around 7 A.M. Northwest winds howl at 17 to 23 miles an hour with gusts to 38. Central areas catch snow between 9 A.M. and 2 P.M., with highs near 39. Saturday brings sunshine back statewide. Highs range from 46 in the east to 61 out west. Sunday looks even better — 66 to 72 degrees under blue skies. For next week. Monday stays mild in the upper 50s to low 60s. Tuesday brings another system with rain and snow possible, then temps tumble to the 40s and 50s. Wednesday looks mostly sunny with highs in the upper 40s. That Friday transition is going to be rough. Have the layers ready. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast as confidence improves. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.

South Dakota Weather March 5 Morning - 25° Above Normal

Good morning. South Dakota. I'm Aaron Jolly. If you're squinting at the fog outside your window wondering where the state went. You're not alone. Visibility's down to a quarter mile across much of South Dakota this morning. Give yourself extra space on the roads until about 10 A.M. When this burns off. In the next 24 hours. Once it clears? You're in for a treat. We're running 20 to 25 degrees above normal today — the kind of warmth that makes you forget it's early March. Central South Dakota climbs near 68 degrees. Out west. Rapid City and the Black Hills flirt with 70, which is near-record territory for March 5th. Eastern areas sit a bit cooler at 61, thanks to that stubborn fog, but even that feels more like mid-April than early March. Don't get too comfortable. Rain develops across the east after 7 P.M. Tonight, with a slight chance of rumbles overnight. Out west, that moisture transitions to snow by morning. Friday brings the crash — temperatures plunge into the 30s and 40s statewide, with gusty northwest winds making it feel even colder. By Friday night, rain changes to snow across much of the state. Accumulations stay light, generally under an inch, but with temps dropping into the 20s and winds gusting to 30 miles an hour, travel could turn dicey. The weekend recovers nicely. Saturday brings sunshine and highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s. Sunday bounces back near 70 out west, 60s elsewhere. Next week turns more seasonal, with another chance of rain and snow by Tuesday and Wednesday. Spring equinox is just two weeks away, but winter's got one more card to play. Enjoy today's warmth while you've got it. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast as confidence improves. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.

A storm system crashes in Thursday night. Eastern South Dakota sees rain developing late. Western and Central South Dakota get a messy rain-snow mix. By Friday, temperatures crash. Central South Dakota drops to 38 degrees with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible. Western South Dakota holds at 43, but gusts howl to 40 miles an hour. Eastern South Dakota stays mild at 57 but deals with steady rain. The weekend recovers nicely. Saturday brings sunshine statewide with highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Sunday warms back into the 60s. One more thing — tonight's full moon rises at sunset. With clear skies early, it will be a beauty. We're also gaining nearly 3 minutes of daylight each day now.
