S3 Ep 1The Score – Tate Kirchenschlager

Tate Kirchenschlager, a 27-year-old Colorado native who now resides in Morgan Mill, Texas, is fresh off his first NFR appearance. Nine years in to his PRCA career, Tate got the big hit he needed in San Antonio, Texas, when he won one of the biggest building rodeos of the year with Ross Ashford and skyrocketed to the top of the standings. The road to the top was a long won for Tate, making a living as a horse trainer and finishing no higher than 47th in the world standings before making his first trip to the Finals last year. Tate—who will get married in 2020—is rodeoing with his San Antonio championship partner Ross Ashford this year, and he’s still riding the Horse of the Year Jewels Smoke Screen. He’s all-in on a return trip to Las Vegas, and we talk about that and a whole lot more on this episode of The Score, brought to you by Nutrena Feeds. Hosted on Acast. bonus

Junior Nogueira is coming into the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as the number-one heeler in the PRCA world standings, roping again this year with Kaleb Driggers. This will mark his sixth appearance in the Thomas & Mack since his explosion onto the US roping scene from Brazil, complete with that infamous pull back. Some things have changed since that first year—he’s is a newlywed, on the brink of fatherhood and his English is pretty flawless. But his giddy personality, his priority of family over all else and his hunt for a heeling gold buckle have remained constant. We sat down just two days before the start of Round 1, immediately after he and the rest of the ropers got to run through the Hill Rodeo Cattle steers in the arena. S2 Ep 67The Score – Gary Poythress

Gary Poythress is the brains behind Rodeo Computer Services—the software behind the handicapping system used by the USTRC to establish interstate commerce in the sport of team roping. He’s helped shape the industry, though almost always strictly behind-the-scenes. He’s had a front-row seat to history, helping drive the explosion of the USTRC and eventually the WSTR with the use of his software. Now, he’s pioneering the new, independent Global Handicaps, the next evolution of team roping’s number system. He took the time to explain how handicapping has evolved and where it’s going on the new platform. If you care about your number, and you’re curious how ropers are raised or lowered, this is a must listen. This new system will provide instant handicap appeals, regional and national event listings, real-time updates from ropings across the country, the most complete analysis on ropers of all levels, and so much more. Gary breaks down the thinking behind it, and his insights will blow you away. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S2 Ep 66The Short Score BONUS — Trevor Brazile

bonus

Full disclosure: We recorded this episode with The King of the Cowboys, Trevor Brazile, in mid-October—a month before he won his seventh Steer Roping World title, 25th gold buckle and fourth NFSR average title. It just so happens we had it scheduled for today’s #RopeVegas bonus episode of The Score, brought to you by Resistol. There’s life outside rodeo, and Trevor Brazile is finding it. The last time he and I talked, back on Episode 2 of The Score, the elephant in the room was his retirement. He hadn’t yet made any announcements publicly, but he and I both knew what he wanted to do. So that podcast was sort of hard for me to do—knowing there was so much I wanted to talk to him about that was understandably off limits. This one, though, is a no-holds-barred conversation about his first year off the road. I’ve gotten the privilege to pick his brain this year about what he’s doing with his young horses in the arena, and we share a lot of it through our Relentless Insights at TheTeamRopingJournal.com. In this conversation we get deeper than ever before on horse training and prospects, and we check in on how he’s adjusting to life at home with his family. Here is Trevor Brazile. Hosted on Acast. S2 Ep 65The Score Bonus – Clay Tryan

bonus

Numbers don’t lie, and neither do gold buckles. That’s why you’re getting the chance to hear a second conversation with the one and only Clay Tryan. You listened to his episode more than almost any other we’ve recorded, and that’s no accident. His prolific win record is hard to top, and his winning attitude is worth studying and trying to understand. We caught up with him as he prepares to rope at the Thomas & Mack, this time with Jake Long. He’ll be the third in his family to head for the quick throwing Kansas heeler in Vegas, and he’s got the same confident swag he’s always had going into the Finals. With just two weeks until the start of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, here’s Clay Tryan. S2 Ep 63The Score – Chase Tryan

Chase Tryan—known as Hock by his fellow competitors—will heel at his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December 2019 for Finals first timer Brenten Hall. This year, they won the Washington State Fair and ProRodeo in Puyallup, the Leduc Black Gold ProRodeo in Alberta and the IPE and Stampede in Armstrong, British Columbia. Last year, Chase placed ninth in the NFR average, heeling behind Bubba Buckaloo and finished sixth in the PRCA world standings with almost $175,000 in season earnings.Chase’s story isn’t typical. After a truck accident early in his career, he spent months in recovery, saved by what he can only describe as the grace of God. The only Tryan known for his heeling, Chase spent years evolving his roping after his first Finals qualification. He’s coming into this year’s NFR 11th in the PRCA world standings, and he and Hall have spent months preparing to light up the Thomas & Mack, brought to you by SmartPak. Hosted on Acast. S2 Ep 61The Score – Jackyl

Jackyl—the larger-than-life legend of a horse ridden by greats from a 15-year-old Travis Graves to Kory Koontz, Michael Jones, Allen Bach, Jade Corkill and Jim Ross Cooper. The unregistered dun gelding earned over $2 million in his storied career, carried Bach and Corkill to gold buckles, and earned worldwide fame as the greatest horse to ever pull back—and I mean PULL BACK—on a steer. We’ve told his story for years, and with his death in December of 2018, we embarked on a video project to tell his life’s story—complete with video of some of his biggest wins—with our partners at Soft Ride Equine Comfort Boots, which Jackyl wore throughout the end of his competitive career.  But this podcast is Jackyl like you’ve never heard him before. We dive deeper into this icon’s story, with the help of Travis Graves, Jade Corkill and Kory Koontz. The story starts in Jay, Oklahoma, when a teenage Travis Graves—who with his dad helped buy and sell horses for a lot of local families—came to ride this outlaw buckskin. S2 Ep 55The Short Score — A Chill in the Air

Carbon monoxide poisoning took the life of 27-year-old Justin Cunningham in the parking lot of a World Series of Team Roping qualifier in Loveland, Colorado, Feb. 11, 2018. Cunningham was a son, a brother, a partner, a friend and a great roper, and his loss reverberates across the team roping industry. His story illustrates the dire need for awareness and prevention of CO poisoning, and his family is doing everything they can to make sure this doesn’t happen to any more ropers just looking to stay comfortable in their trailers overnight. S2 Ep 53The Score – Ferron Lucero, Jr.

Ferron Lucero, Jr.—who works for the World Series of Team Roping and the USTRC as the director of customer service and digital integration—might just be everyone’s favorite smiling face at the country’s biggest ropings. His voice has echoed the history of team roping over the last two decades, and he’s been a part of ropers’ biggest moments from the US Finals to the BFI to the George Strait. But this guy is far from just an association figurehead. His background is as diverse as the sport itself, and he’s even got an IMDb profile for his acting cred. That’s where we’ll kick off this interview, as we jumped RIGHT into his movie credits before we ever talked about team roping. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S2 Ep 50The Score — Jay Wadhams

Jay Wadhams is a hired gun, a jack of all trades, and a businessman. The NFR heeler and BFI Champ from Pueblo, Colorado, has made his name in the AQHA show-horse game, most recently winning the senior heeling on the stallion Smart Nu Shiner in 2017.His famous partnership with his cousin JD Yates has built a dynasty of great horses, and now he’s expanding even farther to build the American Rope Horse Futurity Association and its World Championships—coming up this October 16 through 18 in Fort Worth, Texas.Casually called the Rope Horse Futurity, the event adds at least $100,000 and pays a $25,000 check to the winning 4 to 6-year-old on each end. It’s got a 4-year-old incentive and an incentive division for lower-numbered ropers, as well as a non-pro held Saturday, October 19.The event is a must-see, and I hope this interview tells you why. S2 Ep 47The Score – Justin Davis

It’s been some 10 years since Cottonwood, California’s Justin Davis rode into the box at the Thomas & Mack with Blaine Linaweaver. But in that decade, Davis has made two iconic horses—both mares, not too coincidentally—in Lil Kim and Shakira. He’s won the Columbia River Circuit Finals a couple times, and he’s been on the brink of an NFR trip more than once—to no avail. So at 31 years old, Davis is smashing down his hat on a career in sales, while seasoning the next great mare to come through his horse program. He and long-time friend Brandon Beers are circuit rodeoing and amateur rodeoing when both men’s thriving business careers allow, and they’re both using their long-time industry connections to help them excel. Davis stopped to talk with us between visits to feed yards and ranches, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by the conversation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
